Our little house is in a mediaeval hillside village called Padern in the Corbieres region. It was tastefully renovated 3 years ago . The house is found on the small stepped lane that leads to the St Roch Chapel and the ruins of the castle overlooking the village. There are many short walks around the village but for the more adventurous is the 6km walk to the Queribus Castle.
The village is well placed for exploring the many fortresses once inhabited by the Cathares. Peyrepertuse, Queribus are the best preserved.
Many scenic drives explore the valleys of Garrigue, the numerous vineyards and olive groves and pass through ancient... villages with magnificent views of castle topped limestone crags. If you decide to visit the Gorge de Galamus 25km away, it is worth taking the 20 minute walk up to the dramatic, cliff hugging Ermitage St Antoine-de-Galamus.
Each morning as you open the bedroom shutters you are greeted by the ever changing colour of the mountain (Mont Tauch). Feel like a swim to start the day? The cascade of the Verdouble are just a kilometre away. The sandy beaches and picturesque harbours of the Mediterranean are less than 50km drive.
Visit the local markets to taste the many cullinary specialities, the fresh fruit and vegetables and the wonderful wine of the region.
37 km to the south west of Padern is the nearest city of Perpignan which can be reached by road, rail and air from most of the European capitals.
