Tybee Island, Georgia
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
Tybee means “salt” to Native Americans, but the name of this low-key seaside resort now brings to mind words such as “sun”, “surf” and “fun”. Located 18 miles east of Savannah, this small barrier island boasts a wide, 3-mile long beach that’s backed by sea oat-covered sand dunes and is perfect for sunbathing, people-watching and frolicking in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The island’s south-end pier and pavilion is a splendid venue for strolling above the ocean, people watching and fishing.
Although vacationers are lured to Tybee mainly because of what it provides in the way of recreation and relaxation, those with a love of history won’t be disappointed. Tybee offers: Fort Screven, The Tybee Island Lighthouse (dated 1773), an intriguing museum, and Fort Pulaski National Monument which is just west of the island on Hwy 80.
While Tybee is a resort town complete with a full range of restaurants, modern hotels and motels, luxurious condominiums, and quaint inns and cottages, it’s also a residential area stocked with its share of colorful characters. It’s an atmosphere considerably more laid-back than that of glitzier, larger beach towns to the north and south.

The check-in process was easy and very convenient. The Home is centrally located and a short walk to the Beach! The room was a bit small if you are looking for a place to spend any time in other than sleeping. That said, it suited our purposes quite nicely. It has a nice large open deck area for enjoying the evening air or to drink a morning coffee. I would stay here again.

What an amazing place to vacation!! I came to tybee on a busy weekend and the 17th street inn staff were just absolutely awesome. I was in room six, which was great, it had everything we needed to accomodate our stay and it was in great condition. Very clean, and I'm super particular about that. Like I said it had everything and the staff was great but where they really came thru was that they were always available, in a non intrusive way, and went above and beyond to fulfill my requests. The deck around the house was absolutely charming as well with a lot of swinging seats, tables everywhere and a beautiful beachy ambiance. I loved everything about this place and when I come back to Tybee I wont even look at another place stay. I want to give a special thanks to the owner Helen for being awesome all around.

We really enjoyed our stay at the 17th Street Inn.
The location was excellent... a few houses from the beach and the free street parking was a great bonus. We loved our room with private access..and having our own kitchenette. The decor was quaint and everything was clean.
Our favorite part was the lovely covered patio. A wonderful quiet, shady spot to relax, eat, read.. or nap!!

We enjoyed our stay at your inn as much as we could during "Orange Crush Weekend" We would have selected another week if we had known. Bj did warn us when we met her and her recommendations in how to deal with the "OC" helped minimize many issues such as parking. However, we found the inn very quaint and comfortable. We simply loved the front porch! Bj was very helpful and recommended several local restaurants which we tried & enjoyed. We talked with several neighbors and felt a part of island. We hope to come down again, but first making sure that's it's not Orange Crush.

I was in such a bind over memorial day weekend since I hadn't planned on staying on Tybee Island. Since all the hotels and inns I called were booked I thought I might be sleeping in my car. Just then Helen called me back and after a nice conversation with I was set up for the night! Payment was easy, getting in was easy, parking was adequate, and then room was perfect. It had everything I needed and more. I had a great night on the Island and a great nights rest!!

I would rate this average at best. The room was clean, but it was tiny, very old and worn. The door was coming apart and we had trouble opening it. The appliances are all extremely old. There was left over food in the oven. Just not great for the prices charged.

The 17th St. Inn was a great place in a great location! There were plenty of restaurants/shops/bars around to walk to and never get bored. We also were in a great location within walking distance to the shuttle to Savannah for the St. Patty's day celebration. The room had everything we needed and was very comfortable for the two of us on our anniversary!

The stay was wonderful. The room was clean, and the inn is located in a nice location..walking distance from the beach. It was hard to get in contact with the owner. We had to try several times to call for a reservation. Make sure that you specify the amount of towels you need before staying here because it will be difficult to catch the manager again for more. There is limited parking too, only a few spaces in front of the inn.

Had a wonderful time, Tybee Island was great, and everyone was very welcoming. The 17th St in was, nice, tidy and very clean. Our room was a wee small but we made due. Never disturbed, very quite. The back deck would make a wonderful cookout spot or party spot, would allow for very large groups with wonderful atmosphere and good seating. They have everything you need. They are very accommodating. The bed was ultra comfy. Close to the beach-only one block and only a block for the shopping strip, eating and pubs. Very convenient.

No personal touch. The floor of the room was dirty and didn't look as though it had been cleaned in quite some time. The private outside sitting area was unkept, not inviting at all. The location was great but I still would not rent here again.

We finished up the last part of our honeymoon here and wished we stayed here the whole time. We already talked about going back, We Loved our "apt." and teh porch we had on the 2nd floor. The beach was sooo close and everything was in walking distance. We loved the wrap around deck and lattice work we wished we knew people there we could of had a nice party! The Gentlemen that was there when we arrived was very accomadating and they had beach towels, coolers and beach chairs for our use! And snacks and a few drinks to get a started when we arrived. The only thing I would change there is a sign to tell you the office is in the back. and If we hadn't arrived when someone was there I don't know how we would of gotten in right away since by the time we got there we were ready to be in a/C. But we lucked out or maybe it was planned that someone was there to let us in.

The room was very nice and the location was great. The only improvement that I could sugest would be to have instructions provided on how to operate the two air conditioning systems and to provide the door combination in an e-[mail (we had great difficulty contacting the management when we arrived, and thus it took some time to obtain the combination and enter the room.

Cute little place that was a perfect nest tucked in the heart of Tybee Island. Was so close to all the shops the beach and the pier. All upsides. Downsides; check in was weird no office jst a man who let us in aand gave us a parking pass for that street not for the island. Not a bed and breakfast though iit was advertised that it was. Some snacks in the room but your on your owwn for breakfast. They should offer one or get with one of the breakfast places down the street and do a coupon or voucher. The room was quaint and we would definitely go back.

Thank you for your wonderful review. We are a historic inn and have not offered breakfast in 4 years. We do not advertise we are a B & B. Each Unit has a Kitchenette which most of our guest love so they save money not having to eat out. We were voted the Healthest hotel/Inn on the Beach due to the fact we have the kitchenettes. We have great prices and the best location on the Island. Thank you for your suggestion and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

This place was a great stay. We were half a block from the beach, which was not a far walk at all. We were able to find parking on our street every day, usually right across from the inn. We had trouble checking in--no one would answer the phone. After about 7 tries, we got through, and everything was smooth sailing from there. It was big enough for my friend and I. Our shower was kind of wonky, but it was clean and hot and did its job. We tried to call again upon check-out, received no answer, so we just left the key in the lock box and hoped that was it! But the room itself was great, tons of pillows, comfortable, basic kitchen amenities, nice deck. I would definitely stay here again.

We love the 17th Street Inn. We continue to come back every year and look forward to the next year's visit. The location is great! The outside deck/patio is comfortable, relaxing, and shaded. The management is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are clean and attractive. The Inn has beach chairs you can borrow, in case you forget yours, and materials for use on the outside grills. We have always enjoyed our visits to Tybee and would not stay anywhere else.

Nice place for those that want to spend time on the beach. Comfortable bed. Clean and neat. Parking is included in the price. Staff ("Jimmy") was available during the day to answer questions and help us with whatever we needed. It was very nice to have a small kitchenette to have relaxing breakfasts in the room, or in the beautifully appointed deck in the back. The deck area included outdoor fans above the deck to keep you cool. We had a great time.

My boyfriend and I planned a last minute mini vacation and were pleased to find that the 17th Inn had rooms available on such short notice. We loved everything about the room! We stayed in room 4 which had such a great patio- we loved that we could see the ocean from there. We even ate our breakfast out there. We saved money by cooking our meals in the full kitchen which included everything we needed like pots, pans, dishes, and then even soap and a dish rack to clean them up! This room had so much charm and was so comfortable and cool now matter how hot and humid it was outside. There is only one complaint that I have, and I'm sad to even have to bring it up, but almost as soon as we arrived my boyfriend wanted to take a short nap. We pulled the covers back to find sand all over the fitted sheets- hence the 4 stars on the Cleanliness rating (but everything else was definitely clean!) :( We couldn't believe it since we were sooo happy and excited with our room. We are not high maintenance people so we just took the sheets off and replaced them with the spare set of sheets the Inn provided in the closet. Problem solved. Even with this sand incident we are definitely planning on coming back to The 17th St Inn. Maybe we can even bring some friends to fill up the other rooms! We loved it! Thanks for a great stay! xo

The only criticism I have is the window unit air conditioner, the small dimensions of the room, and the lack of a tub. That said, this place is great. There would be no way to change the size of the room, as the building is very old, and the unit air conditioning is helped by the ceiling fan. The location of this inn, the privacy and independence afforded by the hands-off approach of the innkeeper, and the care and completeness with which the innkeeper makes sure the rooms are stocked, make this a very relaxing place to stay. This last time there were even some cold drinks and little snacks waiting for us - this was very nice. I think the rooms may be too small for a long stay, for more than one person - but for a shorter stay, this is a wonderful value. I have stayed at the 17th Street Inn 3 times now, and will definitely be making another reservation soon.

Thank you so much for your great review.
Out of the 8 rooms at the Inn only one has a window unit. I have personally stayed in that room and it works great.
I hope you come back soon and be sure and ask for one of the other 7 rooms. Thanks again for being a great guest and come back soon.

We recently had the opportunity to get out to Tybee and stay at the 17th Steet Inn. From the moment we walked up we were made to feel welcomed and 'at home' by Jimmy who even helped us unload the car. The room was very clean and quaint and quite comfortable. The proximity to the beach was fabulous! The 1/2 block stroll was close enough that it wasn't a big deal to go back to the room for a bathroom break or to refreshen our Rum Punch. (Even though it is right around the corner from a cple. bars facing the beach. With the beach so close we were even able to take an early morning beach stroll up to the Breakfast Club for Breakfast.
The 2nd day we had Tim's Beach Rental deliver bikes to us at the Inn and we spent all day cruising the island, with stops at both the lighthouses and a few of the many shops and resturaunts in between.
We brought our own beach chairs - but had we known we could have saved ourselves the trouble since they had several stored out behind the house on the deck.
We were only there for 2 nights but with a kitchen and a front porch balcony it made it feel very relaxing and 'homey'. If we return without kids or extended family - we wouldn't hesitate to stay again!Response from Helen Miltiades - 08/18/2011

This was our third stay at the Inn but the first since the owners have taken charge of actually running it and it was a welcomed change. We were warmly greeted and immediately taken care of. We usually visit during off-season and were pleasantly surprised at how great our stay was during high-season.
Everything from the room to the amazing outdoor space had a fresh, clean look and feel. We have always rented the same room and refer to it as our home away from home when on Tybee.
The location is the best. A very short walk to the beach, pier, restaurants and bars. Walking back away from the beach brings you into the quiet neighborhoods offering an enjoyable walk with eclectic spins on most homes.
We're very particular about our food so the ability to prepare meals is an extra bonus of staying at the Inn especially since we've discovered our favorite fish monger - Bowies Seafood. When a fridge and stove are available, the possibilities are endless!
We have many favorite reasons for staying here - a full kitchen, outdoor dining, the location and Mr. Wilson (resident feline well-known to the locals).
We only have one slightly less positive comment to make which is the parking, depending on the season, could present a challenge. However, the Inn does provide a parking permit on either 17th Street or in the lot on the Strand (whichever is available). We do find that once we park, we don't get back in the car (which can also be a very positive thing).

First time at 17th Street Inn. Pleased with the efficient service, even though most was conducted by phone. No manager seen on property but housecleaning was most helpful. Room 5 was a bit small but ok for my husband and me. The veranda was very nice and tastefully decorated. We did not use grilll or cookout equipment but thought everything was in view and nicely presented.
The distance from beach was heavenly! Just 5 minutes and I was sitting in the sand listening to the waves. We would like to go back to the Inn but are looking at renting room 6 which offered same facilities but room layout (positioning of corners, bath) presented more space. -

Location was close to the beach and local shops. Room was comfortable but could have used a few touch-ups, most notably the a/C filter was clogged, the freezer compartment of the refrigerator was in desperate need of defrosting and the bureau drawers needed a good cleaning (sand/dust and lint in them).

While I thought the room and porch was wonderful, checking in and contacting the office about our stay was confusing and frustrating. The only improvement suggestion I have is that there should be clearer check-in/check-out instructions and better communications with the office. Leaving messages and waiting for calls back when trying to deal with reservations is frustrating.

After researching Tybee hotels, we settled on this one due to the value, location, kitchenette, and private entrances. The inn was very cute, though a bit old-school, and perfect for a couple's weekend getaway. We were within close walking distance to the beach and Tybee's restaurants. Kitchen was small and older, but fine for making drinks, snacks, and a quick breakfast. Parking worked out fine, but we did not move the car until we left. We were also pleasantly surprised that they had beach chairs for use. Would definitely stay here again for a weekend.

The parking information on the website and in the reservation confirmation e-mail was very misleading. Parking is terrible on the island in the daytime. Everything about the Inn was fantastic. Close to the beach, quaint rooms, friendly people and staff. Great weekend get away. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to stay longer. I will always stay at the 17th Street Inn on my trip to Tybee..

There was water stains near the air conditioner over the bed. There was water stains in the shower. There was a mold smell when you walked in the room. The utensils were dirty and there were no new towels provided the next day. The bed was very umcomfortable and comforter was stained. I never recieved a reciept for my charges and was charged an additional 39.00 without notification as to why. I would not recommend this place to anyone again nor would I stay there again.

Hi. Room 6 is one of our most popular rooms. Your 2 night weekend stay was $300 + the State 7% sales tax and 6% Hotel/Motel tax = $39.00, which is a mandatory charge. We do not normally change linens and towels for a two night stay unless requested. We would have been happy to furnish fresh towels daily, had you made the request. 17th Street Inn is a casual 1920's Inn within one block of the beach

Quaint cottage, beach in sight, restaurants and pier pavillion just around the corner, complimentary snacks and drinks, comfortable porch to watch the "beachers" pass by, out-front parking, good sleeping bed, free-to-use beach stuff, off-street patio and shower. wi-fi, Just what we wanted. Stayed one night. The location to the beach was great. We enjoyed our walk on the beach. Patio area was very interesting and provided an intimate setting to have cocktails, swing on the glider, and enjoy the company of the owner who was very gracious and offered us beer, wine, and a tray of cheese and crackers.. The 4 of us (traveling with another couple) sat there with him for a long time enjoying his company and sharing our wine with him. His time made our stay very enjoyable.
The only negative was the age of our unit. Very outdated, however, it was very clean.
We would stay there again.Response from Helen Miltiades - 06/13/2011

This was a charming, unique place to spend a weekend and the location was fantastic; however, there was absolutely no service. Check-in was from 3-5 according to e-mail received as confirmation after credit card was charged ... arrived a little early and finally found the "office" around back but no one was there ... had a phone number listed to call ... numerous calls were made to that number as well as a toll free number on the e-mail ... kept getting the inn keeper's voice mail ... a number of messages left but never received a call back. As 3:30 approached, was extremely frustrated as needed to leave around 4:00 for an appointment. Finally after opening some cabinets and walking up and down stairs around back near the office, a maintenance man heard me and came out ... he was able to retrieve our key from the combination lock box and let us in the room, barely in time. Never saw or spoke with the inn keeper at all during our stay! Office staff should be on-site during reported check-in times or at least be available via phone to provide the lockbox code ... instead, we didn't get in our room until almost 4:00 and lost an hour of time that we desperately needed. Suggestion would be to include a lockbox code (that could be changed after each stay) in the confirmation e-mail if the inn keeper is not going to be on-site as she should during registration and check-in. A special thanks to the maintenance man who saved the day ... finally ... and even helped carry luggage upstairs to our room. No maid service such as emptying trash during our stay either ... thank goodness we were only there for the weekend. Loved the inn itself ... unique with much more style and character than a hotel. Within walking distance to everything we needed or wanted. Hope the check-in suggestions will be taken into consideration and improved upon. Would stay again with assurance that we could actually get checked-in on time.

My husband and I stayed here for our fourth wedding anniversary and it was the most amazing place. We did not want to leave. Upon walking in, we were greated by the Inn owners and a bottle of wine which was a nice touch. They are so sweet and welcoming. We felt like we were in Hawaii with all the hospitality.
It was our first time on Tybee Island and I am glad we chose 17th street Inn. It is very private and steps away from the beach. The balconies are spacious and the rooms are as well. You can not beat the value! Why would you want to stay anywhere else on the island? I really loved this place and it made great memories for my husband and me.Response from Helen Miltiades - 06/13/2011

We stayed here for the weekend to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We really enjoyed our stay. It is very quiet, comfy and cozy. It is also very convenient to beach, shops and restaurants.

Close enough to the beach and action but far enough away for quiet in the evening and night. Parking could be better but this is a problem on all of Tybee Island.
