New YorkA beautiful and peaceful sanctuary in Ubud
Left on 06/10/2013 for a stay in May 2013
I did quite a lot of research to find a place to stay in Ubud, Bali. I wanted to be in a place that was authentic and gave me a sense of the culture in Bali. I found a charming, beautiful, and welcoming place at Murni's Houses where I stayed for one week in May of 2013. The food was fresh, varied and delicious. The staff were welcoming, thoughtful, professional and they really care about their guests. I had the pleasure of meeting Ni Wayan Murni, the delightful owner and her friend and co-author Jonathan Copeland the day I arrived at Murni's. I loved the beautiful patios and garden areas within Murni's, the sound of water, and the peacefulness of Murni's. The Tamarind Spa of Murni's which is on site is an added and not to be missed experience of rest and relaxation. I had one of the best massages of my life at the Tamarind Spa, steps away from my room and terrace overlooking Murni's patios and gardens. I would recommend everyone who comes Bali and who plans to stay in Ubud to stay at Murni's. I look forward to returning to Murni's one day soon.

Super fast at responding to emails and sent all kinds of info on trips and what to do while there! The Room is just wonderful and has a killer big ol, beautiful umbrella hanging above the bed causing me to loose sleep the first night cuz i kept staring at it! i want one :)! And the veranda aka balcony/lanai well,,, it was the best part of every day having our breakfast delivered by 2 smiling faces and sitting and laying there on the couches overlooking the jungle! Laundry service was fast and it smelt so good! The shower was hot and loved how it had a tall window so you could see the trees outside ;) You must do the Bali Bird Walk (i don't like birds and it is one of the coolest things i have done, the guides enthusiasm and knowledge is well unmatched)! Enjoyed every beautifully presented meal Murni's Warung and the staff there is so great! The jungle noises were great and actually my dad couldn't even here me on Skype the bugs were so loud one day! You can find cheaper accommodation and there are places to stay everywhere but if you are tired of looking you will not be disappointed! Thank you Murni's staff for an unbelievable, unforgettable, did not want to leave vacation! Thank you sooo very much for everything!!! We heart Ubud and Bali!

Our family recently stayed here at Murni's houses right in the heart of Ubud. Our accommodation was very comfortable and clean and Murni and her staff are just so welcoming. Would definitely stay here again! Ps Loved our meal at Murni's restaurant located 2 minutes away - beautiful food and beautiful location.

As expatriates, used to the best, it is a rare and delightful experience to be able to say how much we enjoyed being able to pay for the privilege of being able to stay as guests in Murni's Houses. It is a rare experience to feel sad to have to say farewell to one's host and her delightful staff, who do everything possible to enhance one's experience and pleasure of a stay in Ubud. Murni's restaurant is also most worthy of not just one, but multiple visits.

Murni and all the staff were wonderful. We had such a pleasant stay, we extended our time which was still too short. Murni herself was such a treasure to talk to and learn from. The atmosphere left my soul happy. It was so peaceful and pleasant with beautiful views and only a short walk from the center of ubud. I want to return again and again.

ManilaSoothing haven at Murni's houses
Left on 11/13/2012 for a stay in November 2012
I loved my short stay at Murni's and am telling all my friends about it. I decided on (don't laugh!) an Eat, Pray, Love adventure and got exactly what I wanted! I stayed at The Room, which Jonathan of Murni's so seamlessly coordinated for me through an online booking. I loved the energy of Murni's houses - it has a calming, soothing ambience, intricate with Murni's world famous Balinese art but down to earth simple and comforting. I am a big fan of Ubud, so first time travelers must go there first for a few days to thaw and chill out.. only then should they venture out into the urban and uppity places of Jimbaran, Seminyak, Kuta.. i loved Sarong restaurant there though. But lucky me, I got the ultimate treat - a French balinese dinner of foie gras, caviar, salmon, lots of truffle oil.. thanks to friends who have been gracious! I will definitely go back to Bali..to its thousand temples, Mt Batur, its simplicity and beauty, and of course, the sweetest people on earth! " I will try my very best to please you, Cecilia" are my taxi driver Made's words that I will cherish a long time!

Left on 08/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012
a pefectly delightful property adorned with traditional Balinese art. Unfortunately the intended bliss was amiss. There was a major constructioin project in full swing on the site and our window and front porch were front and centre to a continual buzz of men and their building machines ( mostly hammers). At least the breakfasts were quiet and delicious. If you can stay away for the whole day then this review is irrelevant. If you desire an afternoon nap, then better find a park bench somewhere else or use ear plugs.

Thank you for yor comments. We did, of course, tell you that we were building a small house before you booked and you booked two nights and stayed at the beginning of July. I think that you unfortunately hit a particularly noisy time and you stayed in the Room during the day which most people don't do. If you'd mentioned it at the time, we could have done something. I'm sorry about that. It's history now ... as you can see from later reviews after you stayed. I'm pleased that you liked the property and the art and breakfasts and if you'd like to stay again the building's finished. Murni

IrelandPerfect sanctuary! So near & yet so far
Left on 07/19/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Arriving in Murnis is like a small piece of heaven. This place immediately exudes the calm, tranquility & charm one hopes for when booking without seeing a place. It's magic lies somewhere between its undefinable position of guesthouse, hotel or home and then there's the on site Tamarind Spa. The 'room' that awaited me, seemingly is the smallest available, but it was more like a studio apt due to the homelyness of the decor and good old fashioned good design. Also, it has such a lovely balcony where breakfast was served every morning. One gets the feeling that not much has changed here in years, but in a reassuringly good way. None of the 'new transient design, but a timeless classic'. I had not been in Bali in 20years and this was exactly as I remembered it to be in spite of so much change elsewhere. I travelled alone, but would recommend for couples or families as it was quite clear that it equally suited these guests when I was there.
I had a few really great massages at the Spa, Mini was tiny but with such strong hands, bliss! It is a really good location, just a short stroll into 'town' but yet peacefully removed from noise. A perfect oasis, I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for peace & quiet in a clean, well managed and beautifully situated sanctuary in UbudResponse from Murni - 07/20/2012

San Francisco Bay Area, CaliforniaHallelujah, the "normal" Bali still exists!
Left on 06/14/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Spent a couple of marvelous nights at "The Room" in Murni's Houses. The reason I entitled my review as I did is because it was a superb experience to see it is still possible to stay in Bali the way I remember it from the early days I used to visit (1981 & beyond). A comfortable room with no pretense, with no chrome/steel/glass/concrete, just the organic basics to make one comfortable which includes plenty of floor space, plenty of storage space, cross ventilation everywhere (with mosquito gauze of course 'sans' the obligatory rips) meaning no need for a/C as the ceiling fan does the supplementary job of keeping the temps just fine. A bathroom that has all one needs but is spared from unnecessary luxury touches, comfortable bed, lots of light fixtures where they are needed and last but not least a huge private veranda with enough space to entertain easily a dozen people should one feel the urge. To top it off, a hearty breakfast in the morning with "everything" and appropriately named the Murni Big Breakfast. What else does one need? Next time in Ubud I'd stay here again in a heartbeat and it is not for nothing that Murni has operated a successful enterprise now since nearly 40 uninterrupted years. Kudos and please keep it exactly as it is, leaving the chrome/steel/glass/concrete formula for the rest of them... With thanks, frank

Murni's House is not located in the midst of crowds in Ubud although it's not too far also. Only 10-15 walking distance from the city center. Once you're there you will be disconnected from the tourist world outside. The place will remind you like home instead of hotel.

I recently spent a couple of nights at Murni's. It is a really pretty little place that is traditional Balinese - really nice. This is the sort of place to stay if you want to feel the real Bali. Everyone is very, very friendly and always helpful. It is less than 5 mins walk to the main street. The room was better than I was expecting. For the sort of money they are charging it is a great property.

Murni's house felt absolutely like home! Not only because room wad very nice, comfortable, spacious and cozy (with shelfs ful of books, beautuful statutes and paintings), but also because of kind, attentive and hospitable staff (Although I feel like calling them friends). Breakfasts were amazing - cooked fresh and delicious just for you. Location wad great for exploring Ubud. And finally i recommend everyone to have some of the treatments at Murni's spa. Massages I had (every day of my 4 days stay) were fantastic! I will definatell come back to Murni's one day!

We spent two nights at Murni's Houses and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were lovely - nothing was ever a problem. The room was immaculate and we loved the fitout, and the long sofas on our covered balcony got a lot of use! The small touches made a real difference - a fruit platter on arrival, for instance, or the quality coffee and tea.
The rooms are set in gorgeous sprawling grounds beside the rice paddies. On a raised road that is a 5-10 minute walk from the centre of town, there is no noise beyond the insects to keep you awake at night - a rarity in Bali.
We had a fantastic time at Murni's, and only wish we could have stayed longer. I have stayed in everything from backpacker hostels to five star hotels in recent years, and Murni's ranks up there with the best of them.Response from Murni - 03/12/2012

I really loved the location and will stay here again if I can go back to Ubud. You really are inside a traditional walled compound, but it's not a "homestay" arrangement. The staff are professional and very friendly. There may or may not be guests in the House, the Bungalow, the Suite, and the Room. You may meet the other guests at breakfast, or not. The "Big Breakfast" is great -- particularly the homemade yogurt with local honey and fresh fruit -- yum! The Room is the smallest and most basic, yet it has a nice private veranda outside. The shower is excellent. Note: There is no swimming pool here. The room is up a longi-ish flight of steps, as is the Suite. The walk to the main street is only a few minutes, but it is down a steep-ish hill (on a paved road) -- not difficult as long as you have no trouble walking. The staff can arrange any transport you need. The walk to the corner of Jalan Raya Ubud and Monkey Forest Road takes 10-15 minutes, depending on how much you gawk at shop windows along the way. It is a shorter walk to Murni's Warung or (in the other direction) to Casa Luna, both of which are nice places to eat.
I recommend you take the Bali Eco Tours bicycle tour, and also get at least one massage at the on-site Tamarind Spa. Both are excellent! You will have to pay in full in advance, and you will have to use PayPal to do it (which is my only complaint, because I don't like using PayPal).Response from Murni - 01/23/2012
