Description from the owner

Our house, Rumah Cicak, is about 15 minutes by car or motorbike from the artistic centre of Bali: Ubud. Rumah Cicak is built using contemporary Asian design. Rumah Cicak is located is south of Ubud and near the main road from Denpasar to Ubud. Yet it is a quiet place in a small Balinese Village called Mawang. Our house is not directly at the main road. Apart from an occasional motorbike or car of one of the villagers you will not see or hear any traffic. Our house is situated in a Balinese family compound (you will stay together with my family: they also do the maintenance and the cleaning) and has all you need for sleeping, making your own b...Read more

    Additional Location Information

Nice quiet place in a small village, enclosed in a family compound, small quiet road, near a river (go left from the house and next road left again) and just 500 meters from the main road between Ubud en Denpasar. Easy to reach Ubud (15 minutes by car of motorbike) but also the beach (e.g. Padangbai - 40 minutes). Nearby there is the Bali Zoo, Bali Bird Park, Bali fun world (indoor playground), traditional market in Sukawati, Celuk (silversmiths), Mas (woodcraft). There is a gas station and a small supermarket nearby. The map on Flipkey is not accurate, this is the exact location: http://mapcarta.com/26452922.

Surroundings: village, rice fields, river nearby.

Kintamani, Besakih and a lot of other tourist attractions are reachable within an hour to an hour and a half. From Ubud you can make all kind of tours: lots of tourist offices and drivers/ guides available. We often use Wayan Mukel as a driver (he is family too). In Ubud there are plenty of restaurants available.

Parking is available directly at the house. Cars and (motor)bikes can be rented.

A glimpse into the real Bali

Left on 05/06/2013 for a stay in April 2013

It's possible to visit Bali and have a "Disney World" type experience, but by staying at Rumah Cicak you experience the real Bali. The house was exactly as described. The family is a delight, and they helped us in every way we asked, including making arrangements for us to experience as many Balinese festivals and ceremonial events as possible during our stay. Pak Wayan was a marvelous driver/tour guide/explainer of all things Balinese, and his rates were more than fair. If you're brave enough to drive yourself (which we definitely were not), the family can help you rent a car or a motor bike. We'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

      nice and quiet stay!

Left on 02/27/2013 for a stay in February 2013

We (my husband and 2 boys aged 5 and 3)were happy to stay in Feb for 6 days. My two boys enjoyed playing with Kadek's daughters and running around freely in the family compound. Some days it rained and we stayed indoors. It is also easy to prepare meals if you have young children. Her uncle also drove us around at a reasonable rate. I liked that we stayed with a Balinese family and could directly interact with them.
Kadek was very efficient in cleaning and provided good service, like helping us get certain items that we needed. In a few years, when my boys grow up, we could revisit again!

Anyone looking for a simple stay in a village and be able to explore Ubud and the other areas should consider this house.

An truly interesting way to see Bali.

Left on 01/09/2013 for a stay in December 2012

My brother and I visited for a week over Christmas. Kadek, the lovely lady who lives in the family compound where this little villa is located, was helpful and welcoming, as were her parents, husband and children. It was a shame we had no Indonesian language skills as it would have been lovely to communicate better with the extended family. Also, we had an incorrect phone number which made getting there difficult from Kuta, as our driver wasn't familiar with the area. However, Kadek made up for this by renting us motorbikes which awaited us on arrival (necessary to either do this or arrange for a driver/car as this house is located about 15 minutes drive from Ubud), cleaning each day and ensuring we were OK. Her uncle took us to Lovina one day and was an excellent driver and charged reasonably, so maybe using his services would be an option for future guests. I thoroughly enjoyed being in a small village where the locals were friendly, smiling and waving as we came and went. Would recommend getting a good map and taking some photos of the street as, while I didn't mind at all getting lost and seeing some excellent scenery in the process, others may get a little more annoyed if they were on a schedule. There also seemed to be few eating options close by, although once comfortable with the roads, this isn't a problem. It's in a great location to go on day trips around the area- we went to the zoo and the elephant temple, allowing plenty of time to meander along the back roads and stop for cold drinks etc. The house itself was very nicely designed and comfortable, clean and great for self-catering. This would be a perfect place to stay with young children who could interact with Kadek's youngsters, or anyone interested in getting an insight into the daily lives of Balinese people in a semi-rural location. Apparently there is a river with waterfalls behind the house somewhere, which we only found out about as we were leaving- but meant to be great for swimming!
