Walk through the hidden backstreets of the traditional village of Tengkulak and you will hear the gentle tapping and cheerful banter of the woodcarvers. Sitting cross-legged on the ground and using a number of small, highly-sharpened tools and mallets, the master-carvers lightly chisel, chip and pick away at the doors they are crafting until all of the delicate details are visible.

In a private courtyard within this same village, a pair of colourful, intricately-carved Balinese doors heralds the entrance to a secret garden. Peer through and be privy to a descent of 17 stone steps to a velvety lawn, a relaxation pavilion and a curved, in...finity-edged swimming pool, bordered by jungle upon the ridge of a river valley. Resourcefully integrated into the natural contours of a hill, and named after a yellow trumpet flower, Villa Alamanda is a one-of-a-kind property. The architecture is neo-colonial in style, and comprises two thatched pavilions, housing four bedrooms (one of which doubles as an air-conditioned TV lounge). Enter the main door of the villa, where two comical statues stand sentry, and you will find yourself upon a living and dining terrace fringed by a forest of banana trees, giant bamboo and towering coconut palms – just the place to absorb the natural surroundings, the rush of the river, and the songs of the birds and the cicadas.

At this charming hideaway, a treasured collection of hand-picked furniture and artwork invites you to relax, put up your feet and recharge your batteries. Here, you will be looked after by a professional team of staff, including the complimentary services of a car and driver for up to eight hours a day. Breakfast is included in the villa rate and for all other meals a house menu of freshly-made (mainly Indonesian/Asian) dishes will tantalise your taste buds. Villa Alamanda is located in the traditional woodcarvers' village of Tengkulak, which sits on a fertile stretch of rice-field land between the Petanu and Pakrisan rivers, five kilometres east of Ubud. About 480 families live in the village, which offers a true insight into daily Balinese life; here you will see farmers tending their rice fields, children playing in the river, and local staff from the village reporting for duty at the prestigious Chedi Club at Tanah Gajah. A small intersection is the venue of a fruit and vegetable market, and there is also a big temple here, which means that colourful Hindu ceremonies are a common sight. There are no international restaurants within walking distance apart from The Restaurant at The Chedi Club (1km).

  The villa was lovely, large bedrooms, great living and outdoor areas and amazing swimming pool, but the real highlight was the staff. The staff simply could not have been better. The best part of our trip to Bali was Ibu Made's cooking. I would return just for the food!

  There is one place we have come home recommending and it is Villa alamanda for family groups of friends with teenagers like us or for groups of friends to relax. Friendly generous staff, fantastic pool for relaxing and swimming. Design that made the most of the location with space to hang out together and space to be alone. No good if you want to walk out to a busy street of shops and restaurants but great to wander round a village and easy to be driven into Ubud and beyond. It was fantastic to have tv space that was out of the way, there but not encouraged. Even a cabinet of books to read. A little bit out of the way but that's a good thing too!

  Villa alamanda, sitting on the fringe of Ubud town center, indulged us with the culture and traditions of authentic Bali. Located within the local woodcarvers village of Tengkulak we were provided with bountiful scenery and experienced true Balinese daily life.
  The unique, yet ethnic thatched Villa was tastfully laid out. In minamalistic tones, decorated tastefully with local art, the compound integrates itself within the beauty of nature.
  We were certainly indulged by all of our senses and by the incredible staff. Highly recocommend.
