Ashton-U-LyneEnjoyable relaxing holiday
Left on 05/17/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Whitbarrow Village was a lovely relaxing place to stay, the cottage was very nice as well and well equipped for all your needs for self catering. The one down side was that there wasn't a little shop on site to buy a newspaper or a few grocery goods. Would definitely go back.

ConsettA great family holiday for old and young.
Left on 04/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013
Our 'villa' set the in the pleasant and well maintained 'village' met all requirements - especially the effective central heating needed with the weather being so cold.
The kids enjoy the games and entertainment facilities. The decent size and warm pool kept them busy while we relaxed.
All staff - entertainment and reception were excellent. Cleaning staff were also very helpful when we had a problem.
Highly recommended!

Thank you for offering us the opportunity to review the above cottage on your review site. However, we did send the owners an email communication 3 days ago expressing our concerns about our stay and still await their reply
We would prefer to speak to them privately about these concerns and feel that perhaps this would be what they would prefer also rather than have our concerns listed hereResponse from Cottage Holiday Group - 01/10/2013

CardiffParking and no food shop on site
Left on 06/14/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Accomadation was good although our shower (in the ensuite) was broken on the second day of our week's stay and could not be fixed by a very perservering engineer and we did get a free meal for 4 (~100GBP) at the restaurant as compensation for this.
Other problems -Parking was a major problem and as it was peak time the place was full but not enough parking space for the full capacity. The other problem was no onsite/grocery shop for a self catering site which is at least 7 miles from a supermarket or a grocery store. -

We had a 3 Bed Cottage, well laid out. Sleeping on ground floor and Lounge and Dining on First Floor. We used the Leisure Facilities and Bar. It was a great location to get to the Lakes and Hiking. We had a wonderful time!

First impressions. The first impression you get of Whitbarrow village is the location. Neatly placed between the heights of Blencathra and the plains of the Penrith to Keswick (A66) main road. Whibarrow village is certainly ideally located for walking, sightseeing, cycling and visiting the main centres of Cumbria. The long drive up to the village through trees lining the road gives the impression of a beautifully isolated location. Signage to the village is clear and not obtrusive. You emerge from the trees and enter the very large car park. Entry road on tarmac, the main car park of crushed stone. We finally located the Reception after calling at a couple of owner/rented properties. The reception area (and the whole site) is clean, clear of rubbish and fancy signs. The reception is located at the top of the site in a very modern building, The receptionists were attentive, clear and welcoming (a great start to a strange place). The rrom we were allocated was (Ullswater suites) a single room main bed/auxilliary settee/bed, modern decor, very clean, welcoming and light and airy. A french door went onto a patio with outside seating. You certainly didn't feel overlooked. The kitchen was very well equiped, microwave cooker, dishwasher, work tops, kettle, toaster etc. Sufficient cutlery and plates, glasses etc for four people (I assume parents and children would be ideal). Entry to the studio room was by 'hotel' style electronic card. Great for security and peace of mind. The room was half carpetted and half wooden floor, equipment for vacuum, ironing were all provided in the generous wardrobe (possibly tight if a family). Bed was extremely comfortable, firm and generous, we could easily lay in bed and watch the large screen digital t.v. (Oh, what a boon the remote control). The bathroom was equally rewarding, two large sinks, a bath and included shower. The plumbing, hot water in plenty and lovely white towels. Great impression. The site also has recycling facilities and a recovery water system.
Other facilities include a dual (adults/children) swimming pool of good size, the reception area and Wi Fi. In addition a gymn, beauty treatment spa and upstairs the main function room, well equipped bar and restuarant. We ate in the restaurant a couple of times and found the service excellent, good food and very accomodating members of staff. There is also an upstairs sports area, board games, table tennis and pool table.
The remainder of the apartments/flats etc on the site are all laid out with names of lakes or mountain passes. These are double or single units etc. Generally they appear also to be well equipped and not actually overlooking each other. the arrangement seems well planned and site access is good. There is access for disabled users, however, the paths and roads around the living accomodation would need extra care. Disabled visitors have use of reserved spaces near to the main reception. In the main building there is a lift for access to restaurant etc.
There are no shops on site, Tesco delivery service apparently do deliver to the various apartments/studio flats. The restaurant does not do breakfast, but evening meals are a must. There is a pub (the Sportsman) at the main A 66 when entering the area of Whitbarrow. They seem to be open for breakfast, mid-day and evening meals. We found the meals here very good and the Jennings beer excellent.
Altogether, a good experience, ideally situated for access to the M 6 at Junction 40, Ullswater, Windermere, Keswick, Penrith, etc.
Visiting local highlights, a must is the trip across the car ferry Bowness to reach Beatrix Potter farm house and the village, a drive along the Kirkstone pass and walk up Blencathra. The main cross country cycle route also passes by the Sportsman Inn, mostly on by roads.
We would certainly recommend both the area and Whitbarrow village.
