SingaporeRelaxing, tropical, charming...

A charming base for a stay in the south just a few minutes' walk from the beach and restaurants of Unawatuna, and a 15 minute tuk-tuk ride from Galle Fort. Monkeys and stunning tropical birds are part of the amongst-nature experience, and you can catch a stunning view from the temple at the top of the hill. Top service too from the owners, who were quick to respond to requests.

IsraelBest stay in Sri lanka!
Left on 04/01/2013 for a stay in March 2013
Definitely the best choice we made - renting the cottage for 2 weeks!
We are a family of 5 with 3 young kids, just came back from a 3 week vacation I Sri Lanka
The cottage is beautiful & cozy and has all u need, it felt like home -very important when traveling with kids
Its spacious, quite, 2 minutes from the beach, clean, great garden (great birds and monkeys) hardly any mosquitoes and most important great neighbors!! So helpful and kind always ready to help with anything we needed - candles, garbage bags tuk tuk rides, TV adjustments...
At first I was a bit worried because there is only 1 aC in one bed room - but the house is very airy and the fans are all u really need
ajith and his staff are the most friendliest and helpful people we met - with huge hearts, nothing is too much for them!
Ajith arrange for us a lady how cooked for us lunch when we needed - she was amazing!
Ajith - we miss u - hope to see u when you come visit in Israel with Duncan ?

Left on 02/10/2013 for a stay in January 2013
Hibiscus was an oasis after a number of nights in cold hotels and was a warm and very comfortable private setting. The garden was our favourite spot among the tropical trees with cheeky monkeys sitting on our fence and colourful birds and butterflies feeding from the nectar of the plants. All facilities were offered,a kitchen complete with all amenities, loung with TV and even a washing machine and best of all, a quiet easy 5 minute walk to a range of restaurants and superb beach at Unawatuna. It was also a 10 minute tuk tuk to the lovely Galle fort town. The bathroom could have used a bit of a scrub but nothing that some mould deterent couldn't fix. I would certainly recommend Hibiscus as a good deal for the right price

BristolA charming cottage in a pretty setting
Left on 02/10/2013 for a stay in January 2013
The cottage was an ideal base for exploring the coastline here. From the cottage we were able to pop into Galle (for sightseeing, food shopping, dining out), Wijaya Beach to relax by the sea and Unawatuna itself to enjoy its many bars, restaurants, shops and beach.
The cottage was spacious and airy, but we spent most of the time while 'at home' relaxing on the verandah watching the monkeys, birds and chipmunks (and real highlight for the children!).
Ajith was on hand to help with any questions and requests we had and helped to ensure that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. -

We stayed here for a couple of days to enjoy the Unawatuna beach area. The cottage itself is superb and very private and is very near the beach and restaurants. The staff at nearby Hibiscus Villa is friendly and very helpfull. We drove our own car and were allowed to park at the neighbours property! We loved it here. Thanks to all the staff!

Adelaide, AustraliaDisappointing
Left on 01/11/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We were looking forward to staying 7 days through Xmas at the cottage and had arranged a pick up from our accommodation in Negombo to the cottage. However despite providing our pick up address and phone number we were left waiting for two hours. Our hosts in negombo rang ajith's number to find out where the car was and got little explanation apart from the car wasn't going to arrive. We then had to arrange other transport. On our (late) arrival we were met by staff who opened the house for us then left.
The cottage was plagued with mosquitos and there were no coils or any other method of controlling them that night. The nets over the beds have holes in them so in high humidity and heat we sustained numerous bites. Once we got to the shops the next day we controlled them with mosquito coils, sprays, electric insect mats and repairing the nets.
The website describes the cottage as cool and light- the bedroom without the aircon is unbearable in the late december heat.
There appeared to be no attention to detail when it comes to the cleaning of the cottage. A woman came most days to do a basic clean and did a satisfactory job but mould around the windows, slime around the plug holes and overhead in the showers and layers of grime in the kitchen left us feeling that the cottage is in dire need of a good thorough clean.
We never saw the owners in the 7 days we were there so didn't get a chance to discuss these issues. The only time we rang ajiths number we got a driver.
With a little more care and attention this could be a lovely cottage but the heat, mosquitos and total lack of hospitality left us very disappointed.Response from Duncan Wilson and Ajith Matarage - 01/12/2013

We thank the guests for this frank review and are really, really sorry to have disappointed them. We take this feedback on board and will strive to ensure no repeat of these issues for future guests. The house had undergone a deep clean this week and we will maintain higher standards from now on during turn-around cleaning.
Unfortunately we can't control temperatures or mosquitoes which are a fact of life in Sri Lanka, the beds do have nets (mosquitoes don't come in through the holes but get in when nets are opened) and there is now AC in the main bedroom.
Finally, really sorry that the hosts didn't visit as we could have resolved some issues quickly, again that's our mistake (so busy at Christmas) and something we can ensure doesn't happen again
Best wishes, Ajith Matarage, owner

MelbourneLovely house in a great location
Left on 11/21/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Hibiscus Cottage is a lovely cottage set in a peaceful garden full of birds. We loved the tadpole and lily pond and the monkeys chattering in the trees.
In spite of a small mix-up at the start, we enjoyed our stay in Unawatuna and Hibiscus Cottage is very good value.
One suggestion would be to put a little more attention into the turnover cleaning - there were a few basics missing (dishwashing liquid, washing up brush etc), a few small things requiring maintainance (which ajith sorted out promptly), and some of the kitchen areas could have been cleaned better.
Overall though - this is a lovely house in a great location for the beach and we enjoyed our stay very much. -

LondonGreat Cottage on South Coast
Left on 08/19/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We stayed in June after making a late booking with the owners. We were a mixed party of European and Sri Lankan nationals and we found the cottage was able to accommodate everyones needs. This did however cause a little confusion with the owners but this was quickly resolved and upon arrival we found them helpful and friendly.
The cottage is in a great location, right by the beach (on a hill) and only a short trip into Galle. Access from Colombo is very easy as well with it being only a short journey to access the new highway.
As you would expect for this part of the world, there are a lot of mosquitos at night but the beds have full length nets but make sure you have full strength repellent.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the cottage and would gladly recommend. I am hopeful we will stay there again on our next visit. -

Macau, ChinaGreat place!
Left on 04/19/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We stayed for 3 nights at Hibiscus Cottage. The cottage and yard was immaculate. It is close to the beach yet away from the main traffic area. It was great to sit out on the patio chairs and see monkeys and birds in the treetops, and the tropical flowers in the yard all in bloom. The cottage is up a small hill, so if you have luggage, you will likely need a tuk tuk to bring it up. The one thing I would have liked to have was an oscillating floor fan in the bedrooms. There is no air conditioning, so it was very hot, but nothing a good fan wouldn't fix.

Thank you to our wonderful hosts Duncan & Ajith and your excellent hospitality. Hibiscus Cottage was everything we expected and more. Peaceful, relaxing cottage with all modern amenities, short walk to Unawatuna beach & restaurants and a 15 min ride by Tuk Tuk to Galle. Monkeys in the trees, squirrals on the garden wall and tropical plants all added to our tropical hideaway in Sri Lanka. Set amoungst friendly local homes but with complete privacy when needed. It was hard to come back to the 'real world'.

Kansas City, MissouriHibiscus Cottage: Magical Place
Left on 02/19/2012 for a stay in January 2011
Hibiscus Cottage is a charming bungalow with a magical location. Located up a hill just minutes from the Unawatuna beach. The gentle sound of the surf, jungle trees rustling in the breeze, colorful birds chirping in the garden and quiet solitude inside. Immaculately clean, open layout and comfortable bedrooms. Bathrooms are clean and the dramatic. A splendid cottage for a holiday. I recommend it highly.

Hibiscus cottage is a home from home, set in the perfect location of Unawatuna. A great jumping off point for enjoying the unspoilt beaches of southern Sri Lanka and nearby Gaul. Booking was easy, local food excellent and the helpful locally based owners certainly go the extra mile to make sure you feel welcome.

Glasgowa relaxing treat at the beach
Left on 01/29/2012 for a stay in December 2011
The cottage is an ideal getaway from city life. The service was excellent. The place was spotless, the kitchen was fully equipped with all mod cons and the whole house was cleaned every day. The house is situated two minutes walk from the beach and lots of restaurants and bars. There are some local shops, a small local supermarket and in Galle (15 minutes away) there are lots of shops and other amenities. The house is set in a tranquil area surrounded by trees. From the porch you can sit and watch the local birds including when I was there the paradise flycatcher and lots of parrots. Monkeys love the nearby trees. What I liked best was the fact that you had the peace of the garden and the general surroundings combined with the fact that the house is so close to the beach that you have all the other facilities whenever you want. I'd highly recommend it.
