Description from the owner

A colonial house in tranquil gardens situated close to the beach.

The cottage is antique in style and decorated in a minimalist manner to complement this.

The two front rooms are a bedroom and lounge room, situated to take perfect advantage of the sun, as are the skylights. The kitchen and large bathroom are at the back of the house.

A comfortable veranda nook is perfect for meals as is the outdoor table. The hammock completes this perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature in private tropical gardens.

The house is located on a beautiful village road winding inland into the jungle. A ten minute walk on this road leads yo...Read more

      Basic Junglie Tranquility

Left on 04/13/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Two of us stayed for a week and had a wonderful time relaxing at the house and nearby beach, as well as taking day-trips to the Wednesday Veg market at Habaraduwa, The Fort at Galle, Marissa and Unawatuna. Cecilia, the house owner, lives close by and is friendly, hospitable and full of suggestions and help which is really reassuring when you first arrive. The people in Sri Lanka are friendly, helpful and many speak enough English to enable you to follow your nose and have more independent experiences if you enjoy that. Cecilia was also more than happy to help arrange a 3 day tour out to the Tea Plantation, Tangalle (turtle watching), Kataragama and Yala. Her suggestion to stay at the Mangrove Cabanas and with Rangeet (a Yala ranger) at his Sanoga Guest house in Tissamaharama was excellent and well recommended - see separate reviews.

The Jungle House is in Dalawella, 8-10 mins walk from Wijaya Beach. It is set in the hill away from the road and is surrounded by palm and jack fruit trees as well as mature tropical plants. It's close to residential houses and some small shops, but it's position is private and not overlooked. We saw (and heard...through the night) Monkeys, Geckos and Lizards, Palm Squirrels/chipmunks, many tropical coloured birds, a 6 foot snake!, large insects such as ants, beetles, a cockroach, crickets and spiders.

The house is basically furnished and equipped by western standards, but has most of what you would need in the kitchen including microwave, gas hob, fridge/freezer and cook ware and dinner service. There is a wetroom with hot and cold shower, WC and sink. The house does sleep 4, but i think 2 adults with children more comfortably, with a double bed and two shorter singles that double as sofas. There are ceiling fans and no aC. There is no TV or Internet, but mobile reception, including data services, is available. a Safe and WiFi is available at Cecilia's house 10 mins walk away.

Travelling to nearby towns and villages was simple on the busses, which were easy to hail on the main road and conductors were helpful in finding the right stop. Busses are frequent and stop anywhere you hail them if they have space to take you. The etiquette is to find a seat and pay during travel, with our ticket to Galle costing 20 Rupees and to Marissa 50 Rupees each. A Tuk Tuk ride to Unawatuna was easy to arrange from the house for about 250-300 Rupees as the guy next door has a Tuk Tuk, but there are many passing the house and waiting at the main road.

We preferred Wijaya Beach to Unawatuna as it was quieter and was nicer to swim in. We enjoyed sunrise and sunset swims there followed by drinks and food at the beach cafe. Unawatuna has larger shops and a large choice of restaurants.

We mostly ate fruit and veg from local stalls as well as hoppers and rottie from the local shop (after 5.30pm) - which were the best we had in Sri Lanka. There is a twice daily local bread delivery outside the house, which is a guy in a Tuk Tuk playing greensleeves - hilarious! The people at the shops were friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed waiting the short time for our food to be freshly made. There is a beach restaurant at Wijaya Beach, and we had lovely pizza and lassies, but they also have seafood and cocktails.

We chose this place as we wanted the freedoms and privacy you don't have in a hotel or resort. As Celilia arranged airport transfers and we were met with a cold coconut when we got there, our welcome could only be described as amazing! We got a great experience of Sri Lankan wildlife and culture and would thoroughly recommend it.
