Quaint little house to stay in

Left on 07/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We just recently traveled to and stayed at Sweethaven Cottages. We traveled with our son, his wife and their two children (4 and 1 1/2). The cottage was very nice and clean, well equipped with just about everything you needed. The hosts Chuck and Liz were exceptional! They were very helpful with any questions we had and had a lot of info on surrounding areas and things to do. They also had movies their for the kids to watch if they wanted to take back to the cottage, which had a VCR and DVD player in the living room. They had bikes to borrow and use at your leisure, there was also a swing set/play area with a sand box for the kids and a horse shoe pit and volleyball net to use. (My four year old granddaughter learned to ride her bike without training wheels while we were there!) We stayed in The Robin cottage. I would maybe suggest a larger one if going with two couples and children as there is just a bar sitting area to eat at in the kitchen and one couch and love seat. Overall very nice place to stay.

      Homey and beautiful cottage getaway

Left on 06/11/2012 for a stay in June 2012

My husband and I wanted a small little getaway place for our anniversary, and this will be a repeat vacation spot for us in the future. The "Dove" cottage is a roomy air conditioned cottage for two. It is nicely decorated with a country flair, which has a hot tub in a screened in porch, a fireplace, and a kitchen that has everything, a very modern entertainment center that has it all, and a very comfortable bedroom. Sweethaven is minutes from the beach, wine or beer tasting, cute shops of every kind, and several unique restaurants with delicious menus and drinks. You will have many activities to choose. The renters also have available for your enjoyment: bikes, horseshoes, bag games, volleyball, and a play ground area for little ones, plus Sweethaven is "dog friendly". Their cottages are in several shapes and sizes surrounded by beautiful gardens and forests, and I am sure you can find one to suit your needs. Chuck is a helpful and a gracious host, and you can tell he “loves” to make your vacation visit special. We are coming back in a few weeks to enjoy this great place with our whole family.

Great little resort - close to the beach, wineries, and shopping

Left on 04/22/2012 for a stay in April 2012

We booked 4 of the 5 cottages at Sweethaven for a women's getaway weekend. The cottages were all adorable, clean, well maintained and well equipped. Everything we needed was available in the cottages. We used the very spacious Martin for all of our group activities and it worked out very well - plenty of room and very comfortable. It is close to the Red arrow highway and just a short drive to St. Joe. It is also close to 80/94 and a short drive to many local wineries. The resort offered bikes that you could ride the short distance to Lake Michigan or the shops in Union Pier - if we had stayed longer, I'm sure we would have used them! A few of the units also offered saltwater jacuzzis and many of the women enjoyed their use. Great place - I hope to return!

      Dog friendly getaway

Left on 04/10/2012 for a stay in April 2012

Okay, so already I noticed an issue, Tripadvisor needs to have pet friendly vacation as an option. My husband and I looked last minute for a pet friendly option for Easter weekend and hopefully a short drive from Chicago. Luckily, I stumbled upon "Sweethaven Resort" in Union Pier, mi. Thankfully, Chuck had one cabin available with only 3 days in advance, so we stayed at the robin, which is a 2 bedroom cabin. My husband and I are minimalists, so this place was more than enough for us. First, Chuck and his wife are small town friendly and great people, secondly, our dogs loved the property! The resort sits on 6 acres and there is a wooded area in the rear of the property with moss-covered paths. Living in Chicago is adventurous, but our pups miss open air and land. Personally, I never take my dogs off leash in Chicago, because I am too nervous about other animals and cars, but I took advantage here. We took several walks throughout the day and my dogs were so happy to explore. Our cabin was cozy and comfortable with all of the required amenities. The cabin also boasts a private screened in porch off the back facing the wooded area with dining table and hot tub. The hot tub was clean and efficient, but I could've withstood a hotter water temp, but my husband thought it was "too hot" at 104 degrees, so I let it be. :) I am from a small town, so I enjoyed the area. The beaches are beautiful, but unfortunately, dogs are "not allowed". We were told that we could visit Warren Dunes State Park and it was dog friendly. Once we arrived, we saw "no animals" signs everywhere, but we were told by patrons that this is usually ignored in the off season. We walked our dogs to a secluded area and went off leash, and they loved running in the sand. The sand is light and powdery and quite beautiful. Another tip: As I stated previously, Union Pier is a small town area, so we went on Easter because it was my birthday, but most everything was closed, so beware typical holidays. The small market/grocery stores can be a rip off, so if you are staying for awhile-- find an actual store nearby. Bud/Elise's charged $4.99 for greek yogurt-- Ouch. We visited Warren State Park, small and decent trails. Also, we drove through Three Oaks, mi, this town seemed to an interesting place to visit, but of course it was Easter Sunday... I would definitely return to check this place out. Again this is nice place to stay, especially if you are looking for a pet friendly destination.

      can't wait to return

Left on 02/10/2012 for a stay in February 2012

8 of us stayed in the Cardinal house this past weekend, and it was perfect. The property is older, but in good repair. The cottages are far back from the road, in a wooded area, so its very quiet. Kitchen was well stocked with equipment, and what we didn't have the owners provided. The only complaint I'd have, albeit minor, is that we couldn't get the hot tub to work properly.

A quiet haven in a great area

Left on 01/17/2012 for a stay in August 2011

A trip to Sweethaven is a great way to get away from it all. The cabins are neat and clean and come with all of the amenities. Since the cabins are away from the road, it is very quiet. The trees provide plenty of shade in the lawn area that borders all of the cabins. Our grandchildren loved playing there and in the sandbox/tree house - they can't wait to come back. It provides us with a really, relaxing vacation. If you can't stand being cut off from the world, there is cable TV and free wi-fi. The owners, the Grasics, have been wonderful hosts, always accommodating and friendly.

The Union Pier area is very nice. We enjoy an "old fashioned" vacation - picking blueberries and peaches (great fun for the kids), going to the beach, and eating at some good restaurants (I recommend Gulistan in Harbert). Bring a good book, kick back and relax.

We've recommended Sweethaven to several friends who have stayed there and returned. I can recommend it to you.

      Gem of a place

Left on 08/17/2011 for a stay in July 2010

I stayed here first in 1993, and have loved it ever since. I have tried to make this an annual place for a week of R&R.; The complex consists of 5 separate cottages surrounding a central common area. The cottages are of various sizes to accomodate difernt groups, but really is great for families. They also are pretty private, and allows folks to do what they want in the area. My personal favorite cottage is The Dove. Most have decks, some with screened in porches. The hot tubs are great. It is pet-friendly which is a major plus of us. The buildings are in excellent condition. The complex is a half mile form some of the best beaches in the world along Lake Michigan. Having the kitchen facilities allows for cooking and utensils/dishware/silverware of all types are provided. The location in the middle of Harbor Country cannot be beat.

      Peaceful, quiet get-away

Left on 05/28/2011 for a stay in February 2011

Been there many, many, times and it has become a second home to us and our dogs. We have stayed in three of the five cottages and they were all great. The location is close to good eating, shopping and casinos. We have also taken advantage of the video library, books and bikes they provide on the grounds. Liz and Chuck are fantastic and very accommodating. We recommend Sweethaven to all.

Home away from Home Sweethaven Resort

Left on 05/27/2011 for a stay in May 2011

I have been vacationing in Harbour County, mi for over the last 20 years.

Discovering Sweethaven Resort in Union Pier eight plus years ago, I go back every November for my fall getaway - and, if lucky, enjoy a spring visit. The owners, Chuck and Liz, are terrific making sure that each experience is better than the one before. The cottages and grounds are immaculate and the wooded trails wonderful for strolls though the pet friendly grounds. The location is perfect for accessing fun shopping, great dining, and the magnificant beaches of Lake Michigan.

The Martin House is my choice of all the delightful cottages. It is roomy and spacious and accommodates visiting Chicago siblings for family reunions and meals.

Every year it is fun to discover updates and new decor changes throughout the cottage. This past winter, the Martin House has gone through a major transformation with remodeling of the kitchen, downstairs bath, and addition of a third bedroom with walkout patio including the largest hot tub to be had. Pictures don't describe how awesome the renovations are. I slept like a baby in the comfort and tranquility of the new bedroom.

Experience Sweethaven Resort - you won't be disappointed; and will look forward to a your next stay.
