TewkesburyVanilla Cottage - A peaceful and comfortable retreat
Left on 05/14/2013 for a stay in May 2013
The Cottage is set in beautiful surroundings, it is comfortable and well equiped, when we arrived there were fresh flowers and wine left for our arrival, everything was clean and fresh and well presented. There were clear and helpful instructions in the cottage for the use of all the facilities. Vanilla Cottage is well situated for relaxing walks by the river Usk, and the nearby Nature Reserve. The owners were very accomodating and helpful with our booking, giving us a good recommendations for visits to local places of interests. We really enjoyed our stay and would definately recommend this cottage for a relaxing break.

We arrived at the cottage to find fresh flowers in most rooms, dog biscuits awaiting the dogs, and some delicious home made blackberry vodka perfect for a night cap. The cottage itself was small but perfect and very well equipped - there was even a hand blender so I could made soup!
We just loved the jacuzzi bath and log burner and also the lovely garden. With 2 dogs and a 4 and half month old baby it made the perfect break. Perfectly situated too with walks along the river adjacent and easy access to the Brecons, Black Mountains, Usk valley and Wye Valley.
Favourite pub we visited one night: The Black Bear - great atmosphere, dogs and babies all welcome!
Favourite walk: Lord Herrefords Knob -

We found the cottage on the internet. From the description, it seemed to offer what we needed - much needed rest after a very difficult and stressful year. We were not to be disappointed. on arrival the woodburner and candles were glowing - enticing us in. Every day we visited the area on foot or toured in the car, taking in wonderful scenery and each evening we would stretch our toes in front of the woodburner after eating a meal I had prepared with fresh, local produce. We "found" each other again - not bad after 25 years of marriage and two grand-daughters! The kitchen was equipped with thought especially for those who like to cook. The bed was so comfy, sleep just drifted in like an old friend. And the quiet... ahh. If you like your "simple life" provided with loving touches like the power shower, the spa bath and the wood burner, you will love this little piece of paradise nestling in the border country. And take your walking boots and camera. We are already planning our next jaunt.

My husband and I enjoyed a peaceful week at Vanilla cottage over Christmas. I can honestly say it was the most relaxing Christmas I've ever had! Superbly appointed, comfortable cottage with thoughtful touches everywhere you look. Bath is amazing! Great area - so peaceful and quiet. Don't be put off by semi detached aspect - we barely saw or heard the neighbours - it's definitely somewhere to 'get away from it all'. Great area for dog owners - walks etc superb. Short drive to great local pubs and amenities. We had a really delicious meal at the Raglan arms (about ten mins drive from cottage) they were very welcoming towards our dog and the food was outstanding and reasonably priced. I'm sure we will be back in the next few years!

My husband and I stayed in this pretty little cottage over the weekend and we found it to be very comfortable with all the extra touches that had been provided. The whirlpool bath is lovely and relaxing! The kitchen was well stocked with equipment and the 'welcome pack' of tea and milk,a lovely touch. The open fire was very nice and cosy. We found it was so peaceful, just the sound of birds in the morning! Lovely walks, and a great pub called 'The black bear' up the hill, which served a delicious Sunday roast. We also had a meal on the Saturday evening with our close friends, at the same place, bit pricey, but well worth it! All in all, if you want a 'chill out' place you've got it here!

Another lovely stay at Vanilla Cottage - the perfect place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We enjoyed relaxing in the beautiful cottage garden and walks along the River Usk and the Brecon Canal, and Sam our greyhound enjoyed cooling off in the water. We would definitely recommend the nearby Clytha arms - dogs are very welcome and the food and beers are excellent. Thank you to Fiona and Malcolm - especially for the tea tray and delicious cakes that were waiting for us on our arrival.

So glad you enjoyed the cottage . Great news on the pub front is that the Chainbridge pub which you are referring to has been sold, has builders in ( end of May 2012)and is undergoing a full refurb so soon should be super ( and right on the riverbank too). Most guests stroll to the Black Bear which is on the same quiet lane as the cottage and around 3/4 mile. Really good food and downhill all the way back!

This is a cosy, well-equipped cottage with a home-from-home feel about it. There is a great deal to see and do in the area and it provides a great base for sight-seeing and walking. Our 4th visit so clearly the owners are doing something right! The cottage has been refurbished since 2011 and is in great decorative order and very comfortable, with a log-burner for chilly evenings. The Black Bear pub up the road has good beer and excellent food though you need to be aware of their limited opening times.

Left on 03/10/2012 for a stay in March 2012
We were confident this place would be good as friends with similar high standards had stayed there a couple of years ago and recommended it. We were not disappointed in any aspect of it.
We were greeted by the owners who took care to welcome us and make sure we knew how everything worked.
The cottage is very quiet (very few cars passed and not a peep from the neighbours); the wood burner made the chilly evenings very cosy (and it was easy to use for us not experienced with them); the furniture was comfortable (making even the poorest TV programmes watchable!).
Add to this the prospect of the jacuzzi bath after a day walking the hills and then a well-equipped kitchen in which to make the evening meal. Two cooking at once is a bit of a squeeze but perfectly possible.
The descriptions of everything are spot on so mind the doors and take care on the stairs. You won't be disappointed. -

Stayed for a week in February, our first holiday in the area. The cottage is a delight, warm, characterful and very comfortable. We arrived a little stressed by recent events and left chilled out and relaxed. The garden and outside areas are perfect!
Great contact help and advice from the owners at every step. We felt really welcomed. Excellent pub (black bear) just down the road. An unusual highlight on the sunday morning of our stay - the Great Britain Cycling team out on a training session cycling past the cottage. -

A picturesque cottage which needs to be visited to understand and feel the wow factor. Very pretty but unfussy. Equipped and cleaned to highest standard. Excellent welcome from Malcolm whose wit and personality put my husband and I in top mode and we knew we had chosen the right cottage!!! So much so we have booked to return at Easter. We need to complete more walks and sightseeing. There are so many walks to do.And of course there is much relaxing to be had too especially in the whirlpool bath!We have stayed at Foxes Reach(another of Malcolm and Fionas cottages) which we equally loved but since we were not having family visit we chose Vanilla for the cosiness for 2 and it worked for us! Many good places to eat with excellent ratings. Alas we chose to eat out only twice since we need to control our culinary addictions! But dining in at the cottage was really intimate and enjoyable.Thankyou Malcolm and Fiona for providing the excellent accommodation we all yearn for when taking a well desrved holiday.

We appreciate all feedback and are glad that you also wrote in our guest book that you had a great week with good walking. We apologize if the local information was in diasarray. We are proud of the extent of the up to date and local information we provide but dont always have time to reorganise it between guests, especially in early summer when the garden needs a lot of attention as well as the inside of the cottage. We will try to do better!.
As far as the low doors are concerned it is true that they are not as high as in more modern houses but the genuine old features of the building are part of our attraction. The actual measurements of the doors are on our website now, previously we just said there were low doors so thank you for focussing us on this. Most of the doors are not that bad at 5ft 11.5" or 181.5cms, and most guests need not stoop for those. Just the hall door is 5ft 9, 173cms and needs more care. . Kind regards

Owners did everything to make us feel welcome. Extremely well equipped providing everything anyone could possibly want for a peaceful holiday. Very well located, easy to find and many facilities within a reasonable distance. The peace and quiet was the best by far and possibly the feral cats in the area the least liked especially as we had our dog with us.

So delighted you enjoyed your stay . No one has mentioned feral cats before so we will look out about those. (The two who come into the garden are the indulged pets from next door and harmless though persistent if they think they will be petted by our guests. They know how to be ingratiating and it often works! ). Kind regards

We had a lovely weekend at Vanilla Cottage at the end of February 2011. The cottage was perfect. Woodburner, 4 poster and whirlpool bath did it for us. Let alone the wine, fruit vodka, sky tv, scrabble and the excellent introduction by Malcolm.
Plenty to do in the area, although we were gutted that Chepstow Races was abandoned on the Saturday. Its also worth noting that the Foxhunters restaurant doesn't open on Mondays and Tuesdays. Nevertheless there are plenty of great place to eat and drink nearby, some quirky little towns, loads of castles and great walks. The walk into Usk along the river is easily accessible from the cottage.
All told a great weekend and we both said that Vanilla Cottage is the best we've stayed at. -

After a busy year and a fun filled family Christmas we came here to have a slow start to the New Year. The cottage is cosy with a relaxed atmosphere. The added extras make it even more special: Lavender twists on the pillows, a delightful sample of home made blackcurrant vodka, fesive table set for us on arrival with bottle of bubbly, christmas stockings and christmas tree. Outside is a haven for wildlife and you need not leave the cottage garden to capture it.The abundance of mistletoe growing in the trees locally was magical at this time of year. Unfortunately the nearby pub 2 minutes down the road has just closed, and the Black Bear which is within walking distance & has fab reviews for food and hospitality was closed over the festive period, however plenty of other places nearby but requiring a car to get to. There is so much to do in the area if you choose to - if not the cottage is a tranquil place sit back and chill out.

"Come home to a real fire... buy a cottage in Wales!" was a Not The Nine o'Clock News gag from the early 80s which satirised an ad campaign of the time and an outbreak of arson targeting English-owned second properties in Wales.
A warm welcome of a much nicer kind awaited us and our bearded collie dog, Harley (she liked the dog biscuit!) when we turned up at Vanilla Cottage just after 4pm one Friday, late in October. As well as a roaring fire Malcolm's excellent tour of the property and useful local info was especially valued as we were staying just three nights. We'd travelled from Woking, Surrey for two reasons - to see relatives in nearby Blaenavon and to recce the cottage for a likely return trip next year (possibly for a bigger family get-together).
We enjoyed good weather for our Saturday morning dog-walk (amazingly, we discovered two other beardies living nearby!) which we followed with a nice pub lunch at the Clytha arms. On the Sunday we took-in abergavenny on our return from Blaenavon.
On returning to the cottage we made full use of the lovely fire during the late afternoons and evenings as we read the papers, watched TV and enjoyed our welcome bottle of wine. -

A week in South Wales for my wife and I and our 18month old flat coated retriever - still a puppy at heart ..
Wonderful sunny day when we arrived - excellent tour of the cottage and everything explained really well by Malcolm and Fiona
The cottage is very well stocked - good kitchen equipment etc.
Flowers and wine were ready and waiting for us (and fruit vodka that we saved till the last night then forgot to drink..)
Garden is beautiful and very peaceful - evenings on the patio were very relaxing
Location is good for walking and travelling out to Brecon etc. Some local walks have a lot of stiles with no gaps/kissing gates so dogs need to be carried over many of these - ..could be tricky with a large dog so choose your walk carefully!
Our favourite local place to eat and drink (food is marvellous) - The Black Bear about 20mins walk up a (bit steep) hill - very friendly welcome from Ruth and the locals

I don't usually write reviews but-
I prefer to rent a cottage rather
than a hotel room so that I can breakfast early prior to walking. The
position of Vanilla is ideal offering privacy and independance, with
excellent walks nearby. Much has been done to provide a high level of
comfort and the convenience of every modern appliance that a family
would need. Decor is good and I found the property well cleaned and
serviced.
Down side petty items.
Early in the season.
It would be
nice if:-
All the doors latched properly.
Lack of mobile phone
coverage was made clear prior to the visit.
The toilet seat would
remain stable and in the upright position. Hinges are
reversible.
Parking can be a pain for visitors although my friends used
the Chainbridge without incident.
Notwithstanding good cottages are
hard to find and
Vanilla was real value for money.
The Bear is to be
recommended for dinner.

Thanks for staying with us and reviewing us. We alawys take feedback seriously and we would like to respond about a couple of things.
You were quite right about the loo seat and as a reult of your comment when you were with us ( we were not aware before) it was replaced at once- probably even before your review was published..
Mobile phones mostly work well at the cottage but some networks and older handsets are less good. For this reason we do offer both internet access and a telephone landline on request. at extra charge.
We would like to make clear that parking for our own guests is not a pain. We have a private off road parking place suitable for one large family estate type car. To those who dont know the cottage please note that this reviewer meant parking for his guests- ie people not resident at the cottage who were visiting him was not easy. He is correct there is not space in our parking area for several cars. However there are places along the lane or at the nearby Chainbridge pub. Happily this is not a common issue as guests of our residents guests are less usual.
We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you next time.

A great cottage, welcomed by the owners with the woodburner lit and the cottage cosy and warm. Enjoyed the homemade fruit gin and flowers. We like to cook and there was plenty of utensils and pans etc. The wi-fi broadband was a plus for us and worked perfectly. The cottage is in a beautiful position, out in the countryside but within walking distance of the local pub which did bar meals. I can't rate the meals because we always cooked in with wonderful produce from local farmers markets and butchers shops in Abergavenny. Two highly rated gastro pubs close by. Highly recommended and would love to visit again.
