What Past Guests Are Saying
Great location, quiet, excellent and friendly service. Trained the while time, but it was still fun. I do hate doing dishes though w/ no dishwasher : )
Cindy and Joe
This cabin is bright, spacious, and at the same time cozy!!
This, our second trip to Kishauwau Cabins, was again amazing. Once again, the owners were warm and helpful. We loved this cabin with its beautiful decor and charm. There were four of us, with plenty of room for all. The kitchen was truly fully equipped for cooking and baking. Even though temperatures were 20 and below, we still made an outdoor fire in the fire pit, as well as a fire in the indoor wood stove. These cabins are only minutes from Starved Rock State Park where we enjoyed hiking and plenty of eagle sightings. We can't wait to return in the near in the summer and fall! We have strongly recommended this place to our friends and family!
Response from Kishauwau on the Vermilion cabin rentals - 03/01/2013
Cindy and Joe,
We are thrilled that you liked the Trading Post cabin and thank you so much for the kind words. That bathroom in that cabin is getting a facelift as we speak, it was just time for an update. You will definitely notice a difference if you rent that cabin again. Til next time,
Relaxing and Hiking
We went 2nd weekend in January. Owners rocked! The place was wonderfully quiet. No cell phone service. Yay! Just make sure you print out a map because GPS also is sketchy.
Such a peaceful setting. We were able to bring the whole family and the dog and relax. We had a nice night around a fire the first night and while it rained the other two days we were there, we were still able to relax and play games/watch movies/etc. Everyone was friendly. We will definitely go back!
The stay was great. Wonderful customer service, the cabin was clean and we had a great time.
Relaxing and Quiet
We had a great time, loved sitting around the fire and roasting smore's and telling jokes. Home was very clean and comfy. The one thing I would suggest is that you keep all food stored in air tight containers and wash all dishes. Due to the fact that there were mice, one got in to our donuts and another was running around the floor.
Went hiking on there trail and it was beautiful. We brought our 2 dogs and they loved being outside and enjoyed the cabin. Nice size cabin we had 4 adults and 2 dogs but there was room for 2 more people. Very comfy place. Will stay again. Husband and I want to come up for a romantic weekend away.
Good family get-away
The cabin was a good size for our family of four. Everything was clean and comfortable, and even though the weather didn't always cooperate we still had a good time. The only suggestion I have is maybe putting in a brighter light near the shower in the bathroom. It's a little dark in the shower area.
great family get away
this cabin in the woods was the perfect weekend get away from our Chicago condo. We grilled, hiked and enjoyed both the surrounding nature and the quaint towns nearby. Our toddler loved it as well. Hoping to make it a yearly excursion.
Peace and Serenity
I recently rented the Trading Post Cabin for a Girl's Get-A-Way with my 2 sisters and 85 year old mother. The cabin was clean and well stocked with everything you might need for a long weekend (plenty of towels, kitchen utensils, deck chairs...) The grounds are beautiful, especially the Koi pond, and the whole place gives off an aura of peace and serenity. We enjoyed having nightly campfires and stargazing. The owners and staff were super friendly and helpful! We enjoyed Starved Rock State park, the river, lunch at Skoogs, dinner at the Port Canal, dessert at Nonie's, and the wine tasting room. The owners also had a huge collection of Dvds for anyone to borrow. We watched 6 romantic comedies!!! It was neat to see the honor system being used, as the guests had access to this collection 24 hours a day. We would highly recommend Kishauwau to anyone who wants to get away from it all. We hope to be able to come back again. Thanks for a truly memorable weekend with our mom! P.S. Cookie, the camp dog, is adorable!!

Terrific, as always!
We love coming to Kishauwau for a quiet get-away! This is our 3rd year staying here...the first two years were just the two of us. This year we decided to bring the kids along to see what this beautiful place has to offer. We will still come back in the Fall to spend time here without the kids! The cabins are always well-kept, clean and quaint!
More than a cabin
If you have every stayed in a fishing/hunting cabin...this is much more. This is almost like home away from home. Well maybe that is an exaggeration but it is really nice. I love the fact that the first sentence on the website is if you are here to party this is not for you. It is nicely kept up. Very quiet. Nice open area for the kids to play. Very clean. The towels are very soft. You need to read what is provided and what you need to bring. I am glad I saw this. Nicely located to the state parks. We are already looking for when we return.

Spacious and immaculate cabins on picturesque grounds
My husband and I stayed at the Trading Post cabin with our 3 kids ages 14, 12 and 8. We loved the one bedroom cabin with the open, spacious living area...especially loved the fully equiped kitchen. For us, the kitchen is a must have. The cabin was immaculate-no bugs or webs or dust of any kind. The grounds were beautiful and well kept and the cabins spaced a good distance apart. We loved walking around the property visiting the koi pond and taking the trail (it is pretty steep so it's not for everyone) down to the Vermillion River. Very pretty area! There is no wi-fi or TV channels or cell phone signal (we didn't miss it) in this particular cabin. They do have an amazing array of VHS tapes and Dvd's to choose from as well as games/puzzles/books at the office. The office is open 24 hours with a land line available, too. The owners are super nice and the area is very quiet. I would recommend bringing a couple flashlights and a Noaa weather radio. We did have a big storm our first night and had no idea if there were any watches or warnings...and the power went out twice. During our stay, we did visit Starved Rock and Matthieson State Parks. The parks are only 10-15 mins. away. Our favorite trail was in Matthiesson SP going down to the lower dells area (lots of stairs). The views in the canyons were beautiful and there were many areas to explore! We have been recommending this area to friends and will definitely be back!
family reunion extraordinaire
Amazing place! Great for the family. The kids really loved it. Clean and cozy.
Great place to unwind
We had a great, short stay that left us longing for more. Cookie the camp dog was a delight. We were ultra comfortable and cared for. Thank you.
The people were very friendly and helpful. The cabin we absolutly loved, very clean, spacious, and cozy. The location was great very private and away from the hussle and bussle of everday life, just what we were looking for, but felt so much like home, with the grill and firepit. The best thing was the koi pond and the cabin itself, and the honor system for movies and ice (don't see that anymore these days loved it. The least thing was no phone sevice of anykind, since I have an elderly mom (90) who lives with us and I had someone in to stay with her,I didn't like having no phone in case of an emergency.I wish they had land line in all the cabins and then charge it to our bill like hotels do. Just a thought. But we will for sure stay again in the future!!!

A great Little place!
I found our cabin roomy, clean and the kitchen sufficient. There were 6 of us girls, so one bathroom was a bit tight. We could have used at least a second mirror - maybe one in the bedroom? Could have used better reading lamps by the beds, we all like to read before falling asleep. Felt very private, had an outdoor grill, large selection of dvds for nightly movie after dinner and very close to the park for our daily hikes. It did have a musty smell, so an airfreshner was on our grocery list. Would come back again. My sister checked us in, so I never met the owners.
Fort Atkinson, WI
Great location for our family reunion!
The cabin fit our immediate family needs quite well, and accommodated the whole clan for breakfast. It was a great location for the family reunion, with the variety of cabin sizes and fun "Wall of Movies" which was enjoyed by all generations. Getting to all the local attractions, Starved Rock, the bike trail, Matthiessen, the local disc golf course, was a breeze. Bring your own water for drinking.
Lake Zurich, IL
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Kishauwau and Starved Rock. There was plenty to do, and the cabin was the best we've stayed at. It was clean and spacious. It was wonderful to have a place that the whole family enjoyed. Loved the fact that we got away from TV, video games, and computers. And we loved being able to take our dog, so it was truly a family vacation!
Villa Park IL
A peaceful & quiet getaway.
We had an out-of-state, family guest who wanted to see some of the rural Midwest, including state parks. This was perfect. We were able to take hikes at both Mathiessen & Starved Rock State Parks. We also paddled a leisurely canoe trip on the nearby beautiful Vermillion River. We also brought our bikes and if we had enough time the I&M; Canal bike path was easily accessible in nearby Utica. After the day's activity it was pleasant to be able to quickly put together an easy satisfying meal in the convenient kitchen then settle down to work on one of their puzzles & watch a dvd, both easily obtained from the Main Building. It was also great to have our dogs with us. They really enjoyed the hikes, seemed very comfortable in the cabin, & they liked the park-like setting around the cabin.
family of 3
Nice family cabins
The cabins are comfortable clean and in a relaxing fairly secluded setting. Our family enjoyed very much.
we want to make plans to come back soon. we all enjoyed our stay, campfire and clean cottage and grounds.. absolutely loved it...

Family getaway Starved Rock
We all really loved the cabin and our stay. We were blessed with excellent weather for our weekend. Everyone is friendly and easy going
The cabin fit our needs perfectly. Sleeping arrangements were great. Loved having a fire pit. It was great being able to bring our dog. It really was. Hiking was great. The property was very nice to walk around and starved rock is very close. We have been coming to the area for many years. First time at Vermillion. We will be back!!!
If I have to say what I liked least, because I know you want feedback
I guess it would have to be that we had no VCR..You had lots of tapes but we had no player. Other than that it was perfect.
The Clayton Family
Our family had a wonderful time at Kishauwau. The cabin was clean, spacious, and had everything we needed. It is very peaceful, affordable, and everyone was very friendly. We enjoyed the nearby parks, and local fishing. We will definitely be back!!!
Relaxing Birthday Gir's Weekend
The four of us girls escaped work and homelife to celebrate two birthdays. We relaxed by the fire and watched movies, ate pop corn, drank wine and had facials. It was a ton of fun. We went sight seeing during the day and stayed in at night.
We had some trouble starting the fire but finally got it.
The bedroom bed is very hard, no mattress, just the box spring

Awesome time away from home...
The place was amazing...felt like home . Everything you needed was available..Very quiet relaxing time went by slow it felt like we were there for a long time, which our stay was a two day weekend. Can't wait to go there again with our family and friends and do it all over again. Amazed on there movie collection they had available to you 24 hours a day. Also they welcome you with homemade cookies that were absolutely delicious.
I could live in this cabin all year long!
Although the weather wasn't the best for enjoying the great outdoors, we were very comfortable in our cozy cabin. We liked the woodburning stove and the ample wood supply the best. Even though the refrigerator was a bit noisy, I managed to get a good night's sleep. We chose a cabin way to big for just two, but it felt just like home. We'll definately return for another stay!
Great Winter Getaway
We had another great stay at Kishauwau on the Vermillion. We had such a good time this spring, we returned for second visit between Christmas and New Years, piling mom, dad, the three kids and two dogs into the minivan and heading for central Illinois. The cabin was well-equipped and dog-friendly, with spacious grounds for romping and roaming. Close to spectacular hiking at Mathiessen and Starved Rock State Parks. A low-key and friendly place to stay. Highly recommended.

Quiet and very relaxing
We stayed for thanksgiving weekend and had a great time, we plan on staying in a different cabin next time because we would like to try them all. The trading post was very nice and clean . Only complaint was that I missed all the football on thanksgiving day. Harley my dog loved it
What a wonderful time! My family of four (my husband and I and our daughters, 8 and 6) and our dog stayed in the Trading Post Cabin for 3 days leading up to Thanksgiving. It was our first visit but our girls have made us promise we'll return. We loved the solitude, the lack of cell service, the welcoming nature of all of the employees, the wood-burning stove and the great location near Starved Rock. The selection of movies is fun and having a full kitchen was super. The main bedroom's mattress is exceedingly hard, which is the only negative mark against the stay.
Lovely, serene atmosphere in a blessedly out-of-the-way location
Wonderful, quiet location. Helpful, friendly family owners.
This was our 5th year and as always, it was just marvelous. Quiet, peaceful, weather was great. We'll be back next year!
Wood Dale, IL
A peaceful weekend.
We had such a nice time staying at the Trading Post, and are looking forward to returning. Although the cabin is set in the woods, both the inside and the outside was very clean, even the window-sills! I was impressed by the details of the cabin; soft sheets, a basket for towels, coffee and filters, dish soap, etc. The little extras made such a difference. Thank you to the owners!
Best place to de-stress and relax at your home away from home.
Our stay in the trading post cabin was exactly what our family needed and it exceeded our expectations. It was a wonderful place for our family to vacation, and we were able to bring our 2 dogs with us. Excellent value, friendly service, and a home like atmosphere without the distractions of home.
Chicago Ridge, IL
Girls Wine Weekend
Had a lovely time in this well stocked cabin. Terrific bonfire enjoyed by all.
We loved not only the cabin but all the wonderful people who make it a pleasant stay! We took our pup Sammi on this trip and had the best time ever! Thank you so much for letting us and our dog stay!
Fantastic facility and staff. A great getaway for a weekend or an extended stay.
Kashauwau on the Vermilion (river)is the place to stay in the Starved Rock area. The accomodations and hospitality were the best I've ever had for a cabin stay. Plus, it is in a beautiful location with several (free) state parks nearby. We hiked, stargazed, roasted marshmallows, frolicked in a babbling brook at the bottomof a waterfall, ate out at a delicious cajun restaurant, and grilled yummy things found at the local stores and farmers market. It was theperfect place to unwind.

Peaceful - No Worries
Love Kishauwau! Have been a customer for 20 years. Folks who run it are fantastic; they're second generation proprieters. Now we bring our grandaughter. No hassels, super clean, a very relaxing place to be. We'll definitely be back!
Perfect family getaway!!
Our family just loved our stay! If you love to camp and hike, but want to have the luxury of a cabin, this is the place! Clean and roomy cabins with a fully loaded kitchen nestled in a private wooded area. We had our own campfire pit and porch which we used every night. Our boys loved the open areas to play and swing on an old fashioned tree swing. Cabins are spaced so there is plenty of privacy. This family run establishment is welcoming and everyone is very friendly. We hiked all day and relaxed by the fire at night. The office has many family friendly indoor and outdoor games as well. We will definitely be back. Thanks so much!!!
Deer Creek, IL
Nice quiet place to stay
It was a very nice and quiet place for our group of friends that hadn't seen each other in a long time. Also seemed like a great place to bring a family.
we recently stayed at your resort and have a lovely time. The cabin was clean, cozy and spacious. The resort was relaxing and peaceful. I highly recommend this resort to anyone that needs to re-connect with family/friends or needs some realdown time.

Great time with the kids!
We had a wonderful time! The trading Post cabin was great, it was spacious and had all the amenities we needed (esp with 2 little ones -2&5 yrs old). The kids had a great time as there was plenty of room to run around and have fun. They had a great time making smores over the campfire. It's a great place to introduce camping without having to "rough it"! Definitely would bring the whole family back!

A home away from home! Its a great place to take a vacation!
The people (Theresa, Jamie, Tim and Britney) at Kishauwau on the Vermilion were very friendly and accommodating; you are treated with grrreat care. Excellent service.
The wooded cabin is very clean and beautifully decorated. The area is so peaceful and enjoyable.
We love it and we will return.
Wonderful, fully stocked cabins, spaced far apart for privacy.
The nicest camping experience we have ever had.
Just what we were looking for!
We absolutely loved this property! Our cabin was spotless and perfect for our little getaway. With my daughter getting married in two weeks I wanted a mother/daughters weekend away from the hustle and bustle of wedding planning. The resort was so quiet and peaceful...we cooked out every night and sat around the fire for hours. We biked and hiked at Starved Rock and the last night my daughter's bridesmaids came and had a great time too.
I would absolutely recommend this lovely resort to everyone. We will definitely be back!
This was my first time staying here and I wasn't sure what to expect when packing and preparing. I was pleasently surprised with how well stocked the cabin was. A fully stocked kitchen, tons of movies, puzzles, games, etc. all we needed to bring was clothes and food. It rained our entire visit which might have been difficult being indoors with my seven year old son, but thanks to all the games, puzzles and movies it turned out to be a fun relaxing time for both of us. We spent our days sitting by the fire reading books, putting together puzzles and playing yahtzee and Uno. It was the perfect way to spend our spring vacation and we are already talking about returning next year.
This was a very extraordinary experience we have stayed at allot of other places but this was so clean quiet would definitely come back also staff was so good made you feel like you were part of the family. Also one of the best things is that this is family owned and close to everything we were hoping to do.
Had a great time this was my second trip without the kids. Planning another trip for the summer with friends.
Janice & Bill Grasse
The Grasse family retreat
Normally we have spent our Spring break at The Starve Rock cabins. A friend of ours told us about this other get away that was alittle past Starved Rock. We rented the Trading Post cabin which had plenty of room for the four of us. The wood stove and kitchen are a nice touch. We felt like we were in the great outdoors with the comfort of home. We definately will be returning when the occasion arises, and letting family and friends know about this great place.

Starved Rock Spring Break get away
Really appreciate having the availability of fully equipped cabins so close to Starved Rock with plenty of room for our family and dog. Warm, clean and comfortable! Friendly family oriented staff and reasonable pricing. Lots of extras like videos/ Dvds, family games, lincoln logs, wood burning stove, wooded area with fire pit and grill.
Thank you so much for helping with my son's Discover america project. He included the supporting interview in his DVD along with several other interviews he had with Starved Rock employees. His presentation went well last night!
Hope to be able to come back to stay in your cabins again real soon! God Bless! Many Blessings, The Pecks
A fun girls weekend of laughing and relaxing.
I have already recommended this place to several friends and family members. We had such a good time. The place is beautiful (can't wait to go back in the summertime) and the staff is very accomidating.
Clean, spacious cabin with fun layout and full kitchen.
We used this cabin as a resting place after long days of hiking at a nearby state park. The kids loved the twin beds built into the walls and there was lots of room for our family of 5 plus 2 dogs. The kitchen was great to have, especially since these cabins are located 12-15 miles from a grocery store and there were not many nearby restaurants that worked for younger kids. Very friendly, family owners. Wish there was a second bathroom, but this is available in some other cabins.
Our home away from home
We have been staying at Kishauwau for years and will continue for years to come. Everything about it is just right. We tell everyone we know about it.
