Ours was a family birthday celebration. People from 6 weeks to 67 yrs. and all ages in between. Everyone had such a great time. The pace was slow and comfortable. Cabins were so much more than we expected, well appointed, clean and very well furnished. Kishauwau is run like a family vacation spot; you can borrow books, tapes, games at no cost and with absolutely no hassle. We actually didn't use any of those things, but it was so nice to know they were available. Pizza, ice-cream, ice, fresh syrup and home baked goods were always stocked. Short trip to Starved Rock where the hiking trails are great. In short, you'll enjoy your stay!!!

The Illini Cabin was immaculate. My wife and I have no complaints about the accommodations. Cabin was clean, well appointed, and the bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed the wood burning stove every night. The kitchen had everything you need. We made banana bread during our stay and everything we needed was there. The property is beautifully maintained and it is located minutes from Starved Rock and Mathieson State Parks. The Kings are friendly and gracious owners. Would not change a thing.

Left on 02/16/2013 for a stay in February 2013
Very clean and relaxing cabin that was fully equipped. comfortable and private. We appreciated that we could bring our well behaved dog for a modest fee. Starved Rock is close to area. Restaurants in the area. In the summer there are many things to do in the surrounding area. However, if you just want to relax, read a book, take walks, this is your place! The only disadvantage (If you consider it a disadvantage) is there is no TV reception. However there are many movies to be loaned out. The staff is courteous and helpful. We are already planning our return trip!

We stayed one weekend in January so that we could spend some time relaxing, reading, hiking, etc. and after that weekend, we decided we just had to come back. And we did! We came back a few weeks later and had just as wonderful time. It really is a special place, we loved the privacy, the quiet, and we really appreciated the trail on the property - offered a great trail for our dog too. We're definitely going to go back. Great place!

My wife and I wanted to further our new found love of hiking so we asked family and friends for suggestions. Starved Rock came up immediately. This wonderful Illinois State Park is located just south of I80 in the North Central part of Illinois. We wanted to bring our pooch (who also loves hiking) so our locations to stay were limited. After looking on the web, Kishauwau on the Vermilion came up with several great reviews. We went ahead and jumped on one of the few rooms that left and booked it. Over the next several weeks, our excitement and anticipation for our hike grew. The day came to depart and off we flew. We stopped first at Kishauwau and checked in. Quiet, secluded, and peaceful, we were very taken aback by the splendor. After meeting the staff, their dog, and driving up to the Illini, we unloaded and prepped for our weekend. The cabin was very nicely taken care of with a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms perfectly laid out so two families could easily enjoy the cabin in comfort. While there is sign of normal wear and tear (ceiling tiles that are waterstained for example) the property is truly amazing.
The only problem with our entire experience was leaving for our hikes... we did not want to go! We highly recommend this property. Great premises, wonderful staff, great prices, and location location location!

The Illini cabin was very clean. We all loved the decor, the furniture and the supplies provided in the kitchen and bathrooms. My son wanted to live there. We liked the porch and the backyard with all the trees.
I was looking for a quiet, secluded placed to stay, and it really fits the bill!
I highly recommend Kishauwau for a visit to the Starved Rock State Park and surrounding area. -

Left on 06/03/2012 for a stay in May 2012
My family and I stayed at the cabin for a weekend. The owners were far from a chain experience in a very good way. The cabin was secluded enough to feel we had our piece of land for the weekend.
The cabin was clean and big enough for a family of six or more, two bedrooms two bathrooms and a large pullout style bed. There was a full kitchen, grill, and fire pit. There is no cable (movies can be borrowed from the office for no fee) and spotty cell service so it was all about having an unplugged family experience. No need to bring pots and pans or untesils. Also there is a nearby grocery store so you dont have to bring anything if you dont want to. We will back and s.tay in the cabins here again. Worth the money -

Left on 05/31/2012 for a stay in May 2012
Our family and my hubby's family met and stayed in the Illini for two nights. We really enjoyed our visit and appreciated the outdoor firepit and grill. The only complaint from the family was the sofa bed is very uncomfortable. My kids slept on the sofa bed and both complained about it. Otherwise, we really enjoyed ourselves. We were hoping to come for Thanksgiving but the policy of no Saturday check-in or outs makes it difficult for us since we have our own business and four nights is just not possible for us. Three nights would have been really ideal, enough time to relax but not too much time away from business.

We had a great time at the Illini cabin, it vwas perfect for our family. My daughter had a great time catching frogs in the pond every morning. The parks are really close so getting to them was quick along with some nearby horseback riding. We plan on coming back in the future when she is 7 and we can go Zip line and white water rafting. I would recommend somehow a way to recycle.

There was 10 of us in our group with 2 cabins rented, we made our own fun and had a nice time. The cabins were pretty clean. The one downfall, no TV! Although they are there, you are unable to get any stations, used for movies only. Although I know this is a place to get away and relax, it's still nice to have the back ground sound of TV, especially when your use to it to fall asleep.

It was a really good place to catch up with my friend and close enough for us to enjoy some girl stuff like the mall. We really thought Starved Rock was peaceful and lovely too. We will be back. You know,I meant to apologize. When I pulled in I saw the office sign and didnt see the arrow ahead. I walked in your home!! Apologize to whomever I startled. Maybe that white gigantic arrow I missed should be painted brighter or maybe it was a senior moment. We will be back

The Illi
The cabins were more than I expected, very pleasant. We did have to wait for our cabin to be cleaned at check-in. The bedrooms were comfortable and relaxing. The bathrooms were accommodating and roomy. The kitchen and dining area was top notch; the accoutrements' made it easy to satisfy everyone's taste. When it was time to relax, the living room was the place to be. Did I mention? The cabins are very clean.
As for the outdoors, I kept the fire lit and stayed out as long as my eyes were open. The outdoor cooking was excellant. There was plenty of room to walk during the day. If not, the surrounding area is loaded with activities for everyone. Provided the rain does not disrupt your activities.
The grandchildren loved it! This will definitely be a return trip. Thank you, everyone at Kishauwau on the Vermilion. And thank you, Kishauwau on the Vermilion, for bringing back memories of the Boy Scout campgrounds.

Left on 04/06/2012 for a stay in March 2012
Stayed two days at the end of March, while visiting the beautiful state parks in the area, especially Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks.
It was unusually warm for March and the lack of a real winter meant more bugs than expected, especially some small black beetles and a lot of gnats; will definitely recommend keeping the windows and screen doors closed and using the fans/ac next time. Of course the warm evenings meant we could cook our steak dinners on the outside grill provided and enjoy a nice fire in the outside pit. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very comfortable. Everything worked and we had everything we needed, and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Will definitely stay here again, already looking forward to it. -

A group of 4 stayed in the Illini cabin for 2 days, one day is not enough. This particular cabin was great...2 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom including shower. Plenty of room with kitchen to cook meals. I enjoyed the fact that there is no cable tv which left plenty of time to connect and talk. However, there are tv's and dvd's to watch. Just a short drive to Starved Rock... a great place to relax and get away. Prices are reasonable, very friendly family owned business.

Left on 12/28/2011 for a stay in December 2011
We stayed at Kishauwau on the Vermillion in the Illini Cabin Dec 23-26, 2011. KotV is a peaceful location with cabins privately located throughout a perfectly wooded area inside a turn in the Vermillion River.
The Illini is a two-bedroom cabin with two full baths and a spacious kitchen/dining/living area that includes a futon and pull-out sleeper sofa.
Our immediate family of 7 plus two infants gathered from pa, Ia, ms and southern IL to celebrate Christmas together. Five of us stayed in the cabin visited each day by our oldest's family of four and additionally on Christmas day we were joined by four extended family members. The cabin comfortably held the Christmas day group of 13. We opened gifts, played games, watched Christmas videos and ate, ate, ate.
Excepting a pair of scissors in the kitchen, we had everything we needed to prepare meals and enjoy three great days in the heart of the upper Vermillion. -

The grounds and cabin were awesome! Comfortable, easy to get to, and fully loaded--there is nothing we could think of that wasn't available, from the 3 VHS players / TV (one in each room) to the warm fuzzy towels to the complete kitchen with programmable coffee maker. The staff was helpful, professional, the cabin was spotless, warm, and nicely decorated. Out of the entire weekend we didn't run into any other guests, which is only an indication of how quiet and large the grounds are. Being able to bring our dog was a huge plus for us over the cabins at Starved Rock, yet it's only 15 mins. away so not a deterrent location-wise. The last detail--a comfortable office that's stocked with just about anything you might have forgotten (for us it was maple syrup for our pancakes)--makes this a much more enjoyable and less expensive option to the other lodging offers in the area. I recommend it highly and we are already planning our next stay there.

The fact that you dont get a signal for your phone on the property makes sure you really disconnect and focus on the people your with. I found the cabin clean and equipeted with things I needed to cook our meals. The bedrooms had tvs and dvd players in each one. The set up of the cabin was nice. I liked how the kitchen and dining room seperated them so you feel like you have your own space.I loved the fact that they offered movies to you free of charge. When I checked in with Theresa and Brightney I felt like I was talking to friends. They made me feel very welcomed. Didnt get a chance to use the wood stove. The only things I would have changed is I would have liked to have a bathtub in the cabin, mine only had showers, and I would have liked more light on the exterior of the cabin. I would recomend this to everyone. I had an excellent experience and plan on coming back to try out the other cabins.

We loved the wood burner. We enjoyed the spacious and quiet grounds, and our dogs enjoyed long walks as well. We hiked at Starved Rock State Park, did a little shopping in Utica, and enjoyed our stay very much. The lack of cable TV and Internet service didn't ruin the stay for our three boys either. They enjoyed getting away from it all and asked when we could return for another stay.

Left on 10/06/2011 for a stay in September 2011
My husband and I stayed with our two German Shepherds in the Illini cabin at Kishauwau 9/25/11 to 9/27/11. The cabin and grounds were lovely! Clean and well kept inside and out. The owners are welcoming and the overall ambiance is a laid back calm country feeling. It was extremely quiet and peaceful there. If you are use to room service, you won't find that here as you are not bothered by staff or anyone coming to your cottage unless asked, as these are self catering cottages. Although there are not any TV stations, we were provided with plenty of choices of movies. And did I mention "quiet"? The silence was odd at first, but we just relaxed and enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere, which our busy lives needed! Don't bother trying your portable wireless devices, they won't work in this location! But if asked, Teresa will give you a code to use up at the main check in cottage which has comfortable couches to lounge on. Buy whatever groceries you need before you get there because stores are not close. We visited both Starved Rock and Mattheissen Park. Starved Rock has lovely trails and canyons, but Mattheissen "dells" was by far the best as we got to walk in the bottom of the canyons. You can also walk paths on top of the canyons, but for us, being right down in them was a beautiful experience! Who knew that this was in flat old Illinois! You'll need boots or old shoes (and a dry pair) because they will get wet or muddy walking at the base of these gorgeous canyons, but so worth it! Also, if you take your dog and walk the base of the canyon, you will need to bring towels to wipe them off and a blanket for your back seat. There is a water faucet by the fort to wash them off. After descending the 100 stairs, if you go to the right (at the base) it's less muddy than going left. But the left side has shallow caves that you won't want to miss! Take sandwiches, water and a camera with you! We will defiantly be back to Mattheissen and Kishauwau on the Vermillion!

We needed a brief getaway with our children ages 18, 21 and 25. Our chosen activity was Starved Rock and canoeing on the Fox River. Staying at Kishewau was a perfect choice for both. We took food from home and prepared it on the grill, enjoyed a campfire and smores at night. The setting is woodsy, comfortable, private. The cabins were clean, roomy and cozy and the staff was very helpful. I would definitely recommend it to others and consider returning in the fall or spring sometime. A great time was had by all.

We have a family of 6 and the Illini cabin was great for us. We also went with friends of ours who are a family of four (they had a different cabin) We've all decided to make this trip a tradition; we loved it that much. The land was beautiful and the cabins were clean. We also brought our dog who had a great time; he's never seen so many lightning bugs and he absolutely loved Cookie (the owners dog). We will for sure be back, we are already talking about it.

We had a wonderful time at the cabin. My husband & I stayed there w/ his parents. It was a two bedroom, two bathroom cabin with the living room and kitchen in between. It was the perfect size. I loved the homey bedrooms w/ the soft quilts. We borrowed a couple of movies from the lodge library & had a movie night, they had a wide selection. The kitchen had all the necessary items for us to have our meals there, all you really need to bring is your food. There is also a fire ring & a camp grill there, we made s'mores & Bbqed. We bought some firewood from the hosts & they even gave you kindling with it. The hosts were super friendly. They were available but not overbearing. The cabins were nicely spaced out so you didn't have neighbors right on top of you. Kishawau is only about 10 minute drive away from Starved Rock State Park & even closer to Mathiesson State Park. We spent one day hiking so it was really nice to come back to the air conditioned cabin. :)

the cabins are great, each has just enough seclusion to enjoy your time there. The front office has lots movies to use for free as well as other services (such as firewood) until very at night. I recommend this place.

The King family is there to accommodate you whatever your needs are. We had a pilot light go out on a water heater in my daughter's bathroom and they were there within 5 minutes to fix it. Firewood can be purchased for the outside fire pit and they deliver it to your door and the kids bake cookies you can purchase on the honor system in the common area while you pick out a movie from a huge selection. We've been there 3 times and can't wait to go back.

These cabins are wonderfully decorated to be comfortable, slightly rustic, and homey at the same time. They're located in a beautifully wooded area where each cabin had it's own large yard area with it's own picnic table, grill and firepit. We spent our days hiking or horseback riding at some nearby sites and then came back to our cabin to cook a great homemade meal in the kitchen. At night, we made smores and were able to see so many stars. We brought our star charts to find constellations, it was so peaceful. The illini cabin had a large table that sat 8 so we were able to do our scrapbooking during our downtime. One afternoon it was a bit rainy, we went to the main cabin and borrowed a couple of dvds, made a pot of coffee with their coffeemaker, and waited out the storm all cozy and warm. While we watched our movies, we worked on crafts too. The kids made "fairy houses" with the twigs and leaves that they found on the ground earlier. We were so glad that we weren't tent camping during that storm! Early morning, there are bird feeders near the main cabin and I saw some beautiful orioles, yellow finches, and chickadees. There were also a bunch of colorful birds that I had never seen before. I think they were jays or tanagers. There were so many beautiful birds!
Since we brought our kids, it was nice that things were nearby. Horseback riding was only 10 minutes away and that river rafting tours were also only 10 minutes away. The adults liked that the Starved Rock state park and Mathieson State park were also within a 10 minute drive. These cabins are perfectly located. Later, we took the kids to an old fashioned drive through and then went to skip rocks at the river. They found an old tire swing and spent an hour swinging and laughing and having such a great time! They told us that their favorite part of the trip was just hanging out (But they also loved the horseback riding.
These cabins are a perfect getaway. We are already planning our next stay here. -

We had a great family vacation at Kishauwau. The cabin was spotless and particularly well supplied. The family was very accommodating for a late night arrival on Friday. Some of the cabins are pet-friendly, as was ours, and so be brought along our two dogs. Lots of great walking/nature around the facility, and it is close by to Starved Rock State Park.
