What Past Guests Are Saying
Ours was a family birthday celebration. People from 6 weeks to 67 yrs. and all ages in between. Everyone had such a great time. The pace was slow and comfortable. Cabins were so much more than we expected, well appointed, clean and very well furnished. Kishauwau is run like a family vacation spot; you can borrow books, tapes, games at no cost and with absolutely no hassle. We actually didn't use any of those things, but it was so nice to know they were available. Pizza, ice-cream, ice, fresh syrup and home baked goods were always stocked. Short trip to Starved Rock where the hiking trails are great. In short, you'll enjoy your stay!!!
Wonderful time, perfect anniversary weekend
The Illini Cabin was immaculate. My wife and I have no complaints about the accommodations. Cabin was clean, well appointed, and the bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed the wood burning stove every night. The kitchen had everything you need. We made banana bread during our stay and everything we needed was there. The property is beautifully maintained and it is located minutes from Starved Rock and Mathieson State Parks. The Kings are friendly and gracious owners. Would not change a thing.
Relaxing, Private place you'll want to visit again!
Very clean and relaxing cabin that was fully equipped. comfortable and private. We appreciated that we could bring our well behaved dog for a modest fee. Starved Rock is close to area. Restaurants in the area. In the summer there are many things to do in the surrounding area. However, if you just want to relax, read a book, take walks, this is your place! The only disadvantage (If you consider it a disadvantage) is there is no TV reception. However there are many movies to be loaned out. The staff is courteous and helpful. We are already planning our return trip!
We stayed one weekend in January so that we could spend some time relaxing, reading, hiking, etc. and after that weekend, we decided we just had to come back. And we did! We came back a few weeks later and had just as wonderful time. It really is a special place, we loved the privacy, the quiet, and we really appreciated the trail on the property - offered a great trail for our dog too. We're definitely going to go back. Great place!
Wonderful Fall Getaway!
Beautiful setting for a relaxing fall getaway. The cabin was well equipt and very clean. Firewood was delivered to us daily by very friendly staff. We loved the hiking trail by the river on the property and we appreciated that we could bring our two small dogs. We will definitely be back with friends and family. Great first visit, so glad we came:)

A Must Needed Escape from the Hullabaloo
My wife and I wanted to further our new found love of hiking so we asked family and friends for suggestions. Starved Rock came up immediately. This wonderful Illinois State Park is located just south of I80 in the North Central part of Illinois. We wanted to bring our pooch (who also loves hiking) so our locations to stay were limited. After looking on the web, Kishauwau on the Vermilion came up with several great reviews. We went ahead and jumped on one of the few rooms that left and booked it. Over the next several weeks, our excitement and anticipation for our hike grew. The day came to depart and off we flew. We stopped first at Kishauwau and checked in. Quiet, secluded, and peaceful, we were very taken aback by the splendor. After meeting the staff, their dog, and driving up to the Illini, we unloaded and prepped for our weekend. The cabin was very nicely taken care of with a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms perfectly laid out so two families could easily enjoy the cabin in comfort. While there is sign of normal wear and tear (ceiling tiles that are waterstained for example) the property is truly amazing.
The only problem with our entire experience was leaving for our hikes... we did not want to go! We highly recommend this property. Great premises, wonderful staff, great prices, and location location location!
Excellent Time at Kishauwau
The cabin was clean and beautiful. I visit Starved Rock area each year and since discovering Kishauwau I will never stay anywhere else. Being dog friendly is great. I have told all my friends about Kisauwau, I know they will call when they go on vacation at Starved Rock.
My family and I truly enjoyed our stay at the Illini cabin.
The Illini cabin was very clean. We all loved the decor, the furniture and the supplies provided in the kitchen and bathrooms. My son wanted to live there. We liked the porch and the backyard with all the trees.
I was looking for a quiet, secluded placed to stay, and it really fits the bill!
I highly recommend Kishauwau for a visit to the Starved Rock State Park and surrounding area.
We all loved it. It was perfect and we can't wait to go back...
clean and comfortable cabin!
This cabin was perfect for our family of 6. It was very clean and in a beautiful location. The Illini is in the center of the property, surrounded by very large yards on all sides. Very short distance to the gorgeous state parks. We would definitely come here again!
Blue Island IL
One word amazing
As always excellent!! You are treated like family from the moment you arrive. I will be bringing my family back soon!!!
Island Lake, IL
The cabin was outstanding!
The cabins our group rented were all clean and very well appointed with most everything we could need. The list of what to bring was spot on. the cabins were all clean and smelled good. I have been to some cabins that didn't smell quite so good and this was a refreshing change.
The time we stayed was so relaxing and the kids loved it.
The staff was so friendly and helpful. The cabin was clean and so nice. The thing we all liked the most was the quiet and the outdoor time playing games and cooking out and fire pit.
Richard Hoffman (reservations by Sharon Ruhland)
Perfect family getaway
Very friendly service with great facilities. Everything was neat and very clean. It was a nice quiet environment with activities such as rafting, hiking, bird watching and nature all around.
It was nice without TV and to have games, camp fires and good bonding, family time.
Unplugged Quality Family Time
My family and I stayed at the cabin for a weekend. The owners were far from a chain experience in a very good way. The cabin was secluded enough to feel we had our piece of land for the weekend.
The cabin was clean and big enough for a family of six or more, two bedrooms two bathrooms and a large pullout style bed. There was a full kitchen, grill, and fire pit. There is no cable (movies can be borrowed from the office for no fee) and spotty cell service so it was all about having an unplugged family experience. No need to bring pots and pans or untesils. Also there is a nearby grocery store so you dont have to bring anything if you dont want to. We will back and s.tay in the cabins here again. Worth the money
Quiet and peaceful...
Our family and my hubby's family met and stayed in the Illini for two nights. We really enjoyed our visit and appreciated the outdoor firepit and grill. The only complaint from the family was the sofa bed is very uncomfortable. My kids slept on the sofa bed and both complained about it. Otherwise, we really enjoyed ourselves. We were hoping to come for Thanksgiving but the policy of no Saturday check-in or outs makes it difficult for us since we have our own business and four nights is just not possible for us. Three nights would have been really ideal, enough time to relax but not too much time away from business.
We had a great time at the Illini cabin, it vwas perfect for our family. My daughter had a great time catching frogs in the pond every morning. The parks are really close so getting to them was quick along with some nearby horseback riding. We plan on coming back in the future when she is 7 and we can go Zip line and white water rafting. I would recommend somehow a way to recycle.
Quiet, Comfortable, Relaxing
The staff was friendly and attentive to renters needs. Our cabin was very clean and all appliances were in top working order. The best was the location. If one is searching for a quiet, peaceful, safe, beautiful place in the Midwest woods, Kishauwau on the Vermillion is a great place to be to listen to the birds and breezes and spend time with family and friends.
We had a wonderful time playing games and running around the grounds. The owners actually had just bought two ducklings which were a huge hit with our little girls. The place is beautiful, comfortable, relaxing, and very family oriented. We will return.
Relaxing Weekend Getaway
Had a wonderful time with family hiking and exploring the grounds and spending a day at Starved Rock.
Kishauwau is a wonderful location to get away. We came from Chicago, and had a great time. It felt as if the weekend was 3 days! We'll be back. Thank you to Teresa and Jamie for making our stay enjoyable.
Not sure of a return
Downers Grove, IL
There was 10 of us in our group with 2 cabins rented, we made our own fun and had a nice time. The cabins were pretty clean. The one downfall, no TV! Although they are there, you are unable to get any stations, used for movies only. Although I know this is a place to get away and relax, it's still nice to have the back ground sound of TV, especially when your use to it to fall asleep.
Just very nice and relaxing
We really enjoyed our stay with you and hope to return. The cabin is just perfect and each of us had our own space. You guys didnt skimp on making the cabins comfortable and clean. It was a really good place to catch up with my friend and close enough for us to enjoy some girl stuff like the mall. We really thought Starved Rock was peaceful and lovely too. We will be back. You know,I meant to apologize. When I pulled in I saw the office sign and didnt see the arrow ahead. I walked in your home!! Apologize to whomever I startled. Maybe that white gigantic arrow I missed should be painted brighter or maybe it was a senior moment. We will be back
A return trip is in order
The cabins were more than I expected, very pleasant. We did have to wait for our cabin to be cleaned at check-in. The bedrooms were comfortable and relaxing. The bathrooms were accommodating and roomy. The kitchen and dining area was top notch; the accoutrements' made it easy to satisfy everyone's taste. When it was time to relax, the living room was the place to be. Did I mention? The cabins are very clean.
As for the outdoors, I kept the fire lit and stayed out as long as my eyes were open. The outdoor cooking was excellant. There was plenty of room to walk during the day. If not, the surrounding area is loaded with activities for everyone. Provided the rain does not disrupt your activities.
The grandchildren loved it! This will definitely be a return trip. Thank you, everyone at Kishauwau on the Vermilion. And thank you, Kishauwau on the Vermilion, for bringing back memories of the Boy Scout campgrounds.

Very nice getaway
Stayed two days at the end of March, while visiting the beautiful state parks in the area, especially Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks.
It was unusually warm for March and the lack of a real winter meant more bugs than expected, especially some small black beetles and a lot of gnats; will definitely recommend keeping the windows and screen doors closed and using the fans/ac next time. Of course the warm evenings meant we could cook our steak dinners on the outside grill provided and enjoy a nice fire in the outside pit. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very comfortable. Everything worked and we had everything we needed, and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Will definitely stay here again, already looking forward to it.
Wonderful getaway close to Starved Rock!
A group of 4 stayed in the Illini cabin for 2 days, one day is not enough. This particular cabin was great...2 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom including shower. Plenty of room with kitchen to cook meals. I enjoyed the fact that there is no cable tv which left plenty of time to connect and talk. However, there are tv's and dvd's to watch. Just a short drive to Starved Rock... a great place to relax and get away. Prices are reasonable, very friendly family owned business.
Back to nature, fun with family
Family had a great time. Clean. Nice people. Dog friendly. Close to Starved Rock. No problems. Beautiful area
Our favorite winter retreat
We have been coming here for years. It is now our New Years get-a-way tradition. It is cozy, mellow, allows our dogs and is nearby some very beautiful places. We usually stay in the Trading Post but we enjoyed the Illini very much. The folks that own this place are the greatest. Hurry up and check it out.
Best combination of the outdoors and indoor comfort
Great to be able to sit outside under the stars and watch the campfire and then come inside and sleep in a clean and nicely appointed cabin. my family has been coming to Kishauwau for over 15 years. We always smile when we pull onto the property - we know it will be a wonderful time regardless of weather. We have introduced many of our friends to Kishauwau over the years and will continue to sing its praises. Great family get away.
A wonderful winter getaway that was close to Starved Rock...
The cabin was super cute, and perfect for a dog and my friend. The kitchen was well stocked, and the bed was comfortable. One thing I would say is that I think the interior roads would be difficult to navigate with snow. Fortunately, there was no snow when we were there.
Polk City, IA
A great location for a remote Christmas
We stayed at Kishauwau on the Vermillion in the Illini Cabin Dec 23-26, 2011. KotV is a peaceful location with cabins privately located throughout a perfectly wooded area inside a turn in the Vermillion River.
The Illini is a two-bedroom cabin with two full baths and a spacious kitchen/dining/living area that includes a futon and pull-out sleeper sofa.
Our immediate family of 7 plus two infants gathered from pa, Ia, ms and southern IL to celebrate Christmas together. Five of us stayed in the cabin visited each day by our oldest's family of four and additionally on Christmas day we were joined by four extended family members. The cabin comfortably held the Christmas day group of 13. We opened gifts, played games, watched Christmas videos and ate, ate, ate.
Excepting a pair of scissors in the kitchen, we had everything we needed to prepare meals and enjoy three great days in the heart of the upper Vermillion.
Arlington Heights, IL
Everything for a perfect getaway!
The grounds and cabin were awesome! Comfortable, easy to get to, and fully loaded--there is nothing we could think of that wasn't available, from the 3 VHS players / TV (one in each room) to the warm fuzzy towels to the complete kitchen with programmable coffee maker. The staff was helpful, professional, the cabin was spotless, warm, and nicely decorated. Out of the entire weekend we didn't run into any other guests, which is only an indication of how quiet and large the grounds are. Being able to bring our dog was a huge plus for us over the cabins at Starved Rock, yet it's only 15 mins. away so not a deterrent location-wise. The last detail--a comfortable office that's stocked with just about anything you might have forgotten (for us it was maple syrup for our pancakes)--makes this a much more enjoyable and less expensive option to the other lodging offers in the area. I recommend it highly and we are already planning our next stay there.
My stay was so peacful.
The fact that you dont get a signal for your phone on the property makes sure you really disconnect and focus on the people your with. I found the cabin clean and equipeted with things I needed to cook our meals. The bedrooms had tvs and dvd players in each one. The set up of the cabin was nice. I liked how the kitchen and dining room seperated them so you feel like you have your own space.I loved the fact that they offered movies to you free of charge. When I checked in with Theresa and Brightney I felt like I was talking to friends. They made me feel very welcomed. Didnt get a chance to use the wood stove. The only things I would have changed is I would have liked to have a bathtub in the cabin, mine only had showers, and I would have liked more light on the exterior of the cabin. I would recomend this to everyone. I had an excellent experience and plan on coming back to try out the other cabins.
Very clean and great location, located near decent size town and nice state park. Staff was friendly as well
A Peaceful Weekend Getaway
My family stayed at the Illini cabin at Kishauwau on the Vermilion for the first time and hope to return for another enjoyable and relaxing weekend. The cabin was everything we hoped for and more. We loved the wood burner. We enjoyed the spacious and quiet grounds, and our dogs enjoyed long walks as well. We hiked at Starved Rock State Park, did a little shopping in Utica, and enjoyed our stay very much. The lack of cable TV and Internet service didn't ruin the stay for our three boys either. They enjoyed getting away from it all and asked when we could return for another stay.
A wonderful weekend family getaway
My wife and I discovered Kishauwau nearly 20 years ago and now enjoy sharing it with our kids and extended family. We love the cabins, enjoy the never-ending campfires, and appreciate the 5 minute commutes to and from the beauty of the state park. It is quickly becoming our family gathering place.

5th stay at this resort over the last 10yrs. W/E for my 70th birthday celebrations that included daughter and 2 teenage grandchildren who flew into Chicago from England
Relaxing atmosphere and quality accomodations.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time. The cabin was ideal for our needs. The two bedrooms and two bathrooms were great for two families and the small children. Hosts were friendly and helpful. We would stay here again for sure.
bill roxanne and harley
Very clean, quiet and owners where very friendly . my olny complaint was that we had to go home.
Very enjoyable and peacefull
My wife and grandson were very happywith the experience. We have recomended it to others already. This was our second stay and both were very relaxing. The closeness to Starved Rock was a plus. We will be back.
Mature and still enjoying outdoor adventure!
Beautiful & Peaceful
My husband and I stayed with our two German Shepherds in the Illini cabin at Kishauwau 9/25/11 to 9/27/11. The cabin and grounds were lovely! Clean and well kept inside and out. The owners are welcoming and the overall ambiance is a laid back calm country feeling. It was extremely quiet and peaceful there. If you are use to room service, you won't find that here as you are not bothered by staff or anyone coming to your cottage unless asked, as these are self catering cottages. Although there are not any TV stations, we were provided with plenty of choices of movies. And did I mention "quiet"? The silence was odd at first, but we just relaxed and enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere, which our busy lives needed! Don't bother trying your portable wireless devices, they won't work in this location! But if asked, Teresa will give you a code to use up at the main check in cottage which has comfortable couches to lounge on. Buy whatever groceries you need before you get there because stores are not close. We visited both Starved Rock and Mattheissen Park. Starved Rock has lovely trails and canyons, but Mattheissen "dells" was by far the best as we got to walk in the bottom of the canyons. You can also walk paths on top of the canyons, but for us, being right down in them was a beautiful experience! Who knew that this was in flat old Illinois! You'll need boots or old shoes (and a dry pair) because they will get wet or muddy walking at the base of these gorgeous canyons, but so worth it! Also, if you take your dog and walk the base of the canyon, you will need to bring towels to wipe them off and a blanket for your back seat. There is a water faucet by the fort to wash them off. After descending the 100 stairs, if you go to the right (at the base) it's less muddy than going left. But the left side has shallow caves that you won't want to miss! Take sandwiches, water and a camera with you! We will defiantly be back to Mattheissen and Kishauwau on the Vermillion!
Karen and Mark
The most beautiful, relaxing, peaceful retreat ever!
We would recommend Kishauwau to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway! We have been twice and have already reserved the Illini Cabin for the same time next year. Love Kishauwau!
Terrific place for families or couples!
We've been here several times as a couple for a quiet retreat while we visit Starved Rock Park, but this time, with our family, it was really special. The grounds are delightful for children, and the cabins so well outfitted to make everyone feel at home. It makes for a wonderfull getaway any time of year.
Had a great time
Great family get together
Loved the cabins, land, deck. The owners were great! We enjoyed hiking at the state parks, fishing in the IL river, the museum in Utica. Wanted to get to the Hornsby Nursery but couldn't. Ate at the Cajun place that was awesome! Head a great time
Just the right spot
We needed a brief getaway with our children ages 18, 21 and 25. Our chosen activity was Starved Rock and canoeing on the Fox River. Staying at Kishewau was a perfect choice for both. We took food from home and prepared it on the grill, enjoyed a campfire and smores at night. The setting is woodsy, comfortable, private. The cabins were clean, roomy and cozy and the staff was very helpful. I would definitely recommend it to others and consider returning in the fall or spring sometime. A great time was had by all.
Superior cabin in a terrific setting
In 35 years of bringing our kids and now their kids to Starved Rock, this stay was the very best.
North Aurora, IL
This is a clean cabin in a peaceful surrounding.
The cabin was extremely clean. The campground was quiet and peaceful. The staff was very kind and helpful.
Relaxing and Beautiful
Three kids, ages 9, 16, and 18... one very energetic doberman... and two adults had such a lovely, restful stay. Sporting two showers, the cabin was clean and convenient... We will definitely be back!
I can honestly say that that our experience was relaxing .the grounds are beautiful and well taken care of .The people were nice and go the extra mile to make your stay a pleasant one.
Vernon Hills, IL
Relaxation and Solitude!
We highly recommend this cabin site for relaxation, quiet, and campfire conversations. Starved Rock is extremely close for hiking and the views are beautiful. Thanks for making our stay memorable!

We have a family of 6 and the Illini cabin was great for us. We also went with friends of ours who are a family of four (they had a different cabin) We've all decided to make this trip a tradition; we loved it that much. The land was beautiful and the cabins were clean. We also brought our dog who had a great time; he's never seen so many lightning bugs and he absolutely loved Cookie (the owners dog). We will for sure be back, we are already talking about it.
West Point, Iowa
This cabin was great! Actually, the whole place was great.
We had a wonderful time at the cabin. My husband & I stayed there w/ his parents. It was a two bedroom, two bathroom cabin with the living room and kitchen in between. It was the perfect size. I loved the homey bedrooms w/ the soft quilts. We borrowed a couple of movies from the lodge library & had a movie night, they had a wide selection. The kitchen had all the necessary items for us to have our meals there, all you really need to bring is your food. There is also a fire ring & a camp grill there, we made s'mores & Bbqed. We bought some firewood from the hosts & they even gave you kindling with it. The hosts were super friendly. They were available but not overbearing. The cabins were nicely spaced out so you didn't have neighbors right on top of you. Kishawau is only about 10 minute drive away from Starved Rock State Park & even closer to Mathiesson State Park. We spent one day hiking so it was really nice to come back to the air conditioned cabin. :)
Just what we wanted. The Illini was perfect for us! We had everything we needed. We brought our dogs and they loved it too. We will be back.
Kishauwau Cabins - Memorial Day Weekend 2011
Memorial Day Weekend at Illini Cabin
We truly enjoyed our cabin experience over Memorial Day Weekend. Terisa did a great job ensuring we had everything we needed. Even when the weather didn't cooperate we were comfortable and had plenty to keep us entertained. The cabin was terrific! It was clean and equipped with most everything we needed. The grounds were well kept and family friendly. We would definitely recommend it and visit again.
We were all impressed with our time there. The area is great for things to do. The cabin was very clean and very well maintained.
Elk Grove, Illinois
Relaxing, clean and comfortable vacation.
Beautiful wooded surroundings, very relaxing atmosphere. This also is very close to to great family hiking parks in northern central Illinois.
Great place to stay
the cabins are great, each has just enough seclusion to enjoy your time there. The front office has lots movies to use for free as well as other services (such as firewood) until very at night. I recommend this place.
Private, clean, easiest weekend ever.
The King family is there to accommodate you whatever your needs are. We had a pilot light go out on a water heater in my daughter's bathroom and they were there within 5 minutes to fix it. Firewood can be purchased for the outside fire pit and they deliver it to your door and the kids bake cookies you can purchase on the honor system in the common area while you pick out a movie from a huge selection. We've been there 3 times and can't wait to go back.
Great place to get away
Wonderful and secluded - very clean and great to have access to a firepit.
Loved staying there and would recommend it.
wonderful, peaceful and beautiful place
These cabins are wonderfully decorated to be comfortable, slightly rustic, and homey at the same time. They're located in a beautifully wooded area where each cabin had it's own large yard area with it's own picnic table, grill and firepit. We spent our days hiking or horseback riding at some nearby sites and then came back to our cabin to cook a great homemade meal in the kitchen. At night, we made smores and were able to see so many stars. We brought our star charts to find constellations, it was so peaceful. The illini cabin had a large table that sat 8 so we were able to do our scrapbooking during our downtime. One afternoon it was a bit rainy, we went to the main cabin and borrowed a couple of dvds, made a pot of coffee with their coffeemaker, and waited out the storm all cozy and warm. While we watched our movies, we worked on crafts too. The kids made "fairy houses" with the twigs and leaves that they found on the ground earlier. We were so glad that we weren't tent camping during that storm! Early morning, there are bird feeders near the main cabin and I saw some beautiful orioles, yellow finches, and chickadees. There were also a bunch of colorful birds that I had never seen before. I think they were jays or tanagers. There were so many beautiful birds!
Since we brought our kids, it was nice that things were nearby. Horseback riding was only 10 minutes away and that river rafting tours were also only 10 minutes away. The adults liked that the Starved Rock state park and Mathieson State park were also within a 10 minute drive. These cabins are perfectly located. Later, we took the kids to an old fashioned drive through and then went to skip rocks at the river. They found an old tire swing and spent an hour swinging and laughing and having such a great time! They told us that their favorite part of the trip was just hanging out (But they also loved the horseback riding.
These cabins are a perfect getaway. We are already planning our next stay here.
A relaxing get away
My wife wanted to stay in a cabin by the woods for some time and she wanted to take our 2 pugs with us. The Illini Cabin at Kishauwau on the Vermillion was the perfect place! The cabin was nice and clean and the area was very peaceful and quiet. We plan to return.
Totally relaxing get away!
Clean comfortable cabins. Great place to get away from stress and relax. The owners are great.
Great Stay in a Great Spot
We had a great family vacation at Kishauwau. The cabin was spotless and particularly well supplied. The family was very accommodating for a late night arrival on Friday. Some of the cabins are pet-friendly, as was ours, and so be brought along our two dogs. Lots of great walking/nature around the facility, and it is close by to Starved Rock State Park.
Quiet relaxing getaway
We enjoy the time to getaway from the crowds. Everything appeared to be clean. The one couch is not very comfortable for us old folks. We did notice that there was one new one.
At home at Kishauwau
We stayed in the illini this March and loved it! We are already trying to figure out when we can come back. The owners are very kind and accommodating, they really make you feel like you are at home on their property. Our only complaint is that we didn't get to stay long enough.
Bob & Pat Kamradt Family
Beauty of nature and warm and friendly owners and great cabin!
Always look forward to coming here. We have been here many times with either family or friends. From rafting on the Vermillion River or just hiking at one of the beautiful state parks its a trip always enjoyed by all. I would also like to say that Ellen and her family are the warmest people and treat everyone like part of their family! Hope to come back for many years to come. Thank you
