The staff was very friendly and helpful. The office is open 24/7 in case you need anything like ice or even to borrow up a board game or a movie. The cabin was very clean and had everything that we needed. The water for the whirlpool tub was nice and hot, which surprised me because it's such a big tub! The Starved Rock area is so beautiful, no matter what the season.
We will definitely be staying with Kishauwau Cabins again in the future!

Kind of like potato chips...one stay just wasn't enough!
We found this gem after many attempts to book at Starved Rock Lodge. We were not expecting what we found at Kishauwau. The cabin was awesome. The setting could not have been more idyllic. Comforting, peaceful, quite, and private. Teresa and Jamie are outstanding hosts and were attentive and helpful in every way possible. We stayed one night in February and were so impressed that we booked a weekend several weeks later in March to celebrate our anniversary. If you like pleasant surprises you will find them at Kishauwau. If I tell you anymore it won't be a surprise, but I will tell you this. We will return to Kishauwau often.

An excellant getaway! We will be back! A perfect spot if your looking for peace and quiet. The owners have thought of everything, just bring your food and enjoy :)
Peaceful and relaxing retreat
The staff stayed out of the way, but was available and quick when needed (in our case for more firewood for the wood-burning free-standing fireplace). We had a luxurious whirlpool bath to relax in and the kitchen allowed us to stay in and cook all our food together. Utica and Starved Rock were about a 5-10 minute drive away with great hiking and dining opportunities. We had a very romantic getaway weekend.
Just what we needed
My wife and I were looking for somewhere to get away from it all. What a perfect spot! I am sure that we will be back.
Nice, relaxing--would definitely recommend
Everything was great--nice, large jacuzzi tub; nice location/surroundings. 10 minutes from Starved Rock and we were impressed with the restaurant choices in the area. We went in the off-season, which made the price of the cabin even better. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The website was very upfront about the only disadvantages: flavor of the water (we thought it was salty), and lack of good internet/cell phone service. But we knew that going in.
I would definitely recommend staying here if you'd like a weekend away and want to do some hiking at Starved Rock or other area parks.
We have stayed at kishauwau many times and as always we had a great time and didn't want to leave. We have been coming here for years and we recommend it to everybody, every chance we get. They are great hosts and we love the fact that we are not bothered by them but still have the comfort of knowing they're there if we need them. It is right up the road from the state parks such as Buffalo Rock, Starved Rock and Matheison State park which make for great hiking and at the right times of year, great opportunities to see Bald Eagles. We love the local businesses and the shop owners/keepers are wonderful just to talk with. My personal favorite is Mix Trading post. We share a lot of the political views and once again they aren't there to bother you as you browse but make sure that you know they're there if you need them. Can not recommend Kishauwau or the local area enough to anybody. The whole community is motorcycle friendly and actually appreciate your business, which in todays age is a rare thing in my opinion.
Just what I was looking for!
I was looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway, and Osage Cabin here at Kishauwau exceeded my expectations! Cabin was immaculately cleaned, whirlpool tub and shower were very well maintained, kitchen had everything we needed, and the linens were luxurious! The office that was open 24 hours a day with tons of free movies, and snacks and amenities for purchase was a nice, unexpected bonus! Less than a 5 minute drive to Starved Rock, and within just a few minutes of several small towns with quaint shops and restaurants. Can't wait to return!
This was a last minute trip and it couldn't have been better even if I planned way in advance! The grounds are beautiful and easy to find located just south of Starved Rock state park on the vermillion river. Literally our back door opened to a gorgeous river view. The cabin was comfortable and extremely clean. We were so comfortable we were sad to leave after only one night. Even though we only saw staff at check in/out we felt like family the way the office is set up with all the comforts of home! We will be back in the summer and also plan to bring friends to share this hidden gem! Did I mention the value? Can't beat it!!

My wife and I have been going to Kishauwau for the last eighteen years. And once again they've out done themselves! If you want to get away for some much needed down time this is the place. Whirlpool, woodburner, full kitchen, comfy bed, and all wrapped up in a blanket of solitude. Turn off your cell phone, plug in a movie (they have a large selection of movies at the office) open a bottle of wine and kick back. You can Hike any one of the many canyon trails at Starved Rock. Then if you get hungry swing on by the Canal Port or The Cajun Connection both very close by. You wont be disappointed.
Quiet and clean... Our home away from home!
We have rented twice now in the last few months. It's the perfect spot to get away and relax. Great selection of movies. Beautiful scenery. Great kitchen. Excellent spot for a weekend getaway.
Great getaway location
The cabins had everything you need for a fantastic get away; privacy, amenities, warm and comfortable surroundings - perfect! Thank you Kiauwau, We hope to be back soon.

We love the cabins at Kishauwau! It is our favorite escape!
No Wifi and no cable. My wife and I spent hours doing a jigsaw puzzle and at times just enjoyed the silence. Close to starved rock but remote enough to disconnect.
We very pleased with our stay. We are looking to book again. We will definatly recommend to all of our family and friends.

Touch of Class, but still remote
Cozy cabin off the beaten path. Clean and relatively modern without losing any country charm. No cable & probably no phone service, but a substantial DVD library.
If you can't spend some time off-line, don't go there. Owners are attentive, but not intrusive. Great bathtub. Will return during a warmer time of year to explore the property.
Awesome retreat from busy life
We have been coming to Kishauwau for about 10 years. First my husband and I, and now we bring our daughters. We love to hike at Starved Rock and Mattheisson State Park then come back and relax in the cabin. Our daughters especially love the whirlpool. The cabins are clean and warm and the staff is very friendly.

Thank you so much for the kind words about our facility. We look forward to seeing you again.
My husband and I stayed at the Kishauwau Cabins for 2 nights in January. The cabin was clean, warm and comfortable. We were able to bring our dogs, which was the reason we chose this property. It is close to Starved Rock State park and the grounds are spacious and the cabins private. We would return again! Read more

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay. We hope to see you again sometime.
We came here for our 29th anniversary. I was hoping to squeeze in at the Starved Rock Lodge, but all the cabins there were booked. I found this place completely by accident and my first thought was that it was basically a Starved Rock "overflow" lodge for poor planners like me. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
We stayed in the Hunter's cabin which was perfect for two people. It was very clean, well-maintained, and had all the amenities you'd need for a few days away. We didn't use the wood stove which would have made it even cozier. No cable/satellite service (But you can checkout free movies from the office), no internet, and no telephone - very nice. Office is open 24/7, but not manned 24/7. That's okay though because the owners are on call and extremely attentive. They also have some basic items are for sale: ice cream, pizza, some condiments, fire logs, lighter fluid, etc., all on the honor system. This I found quite refreshing. All you really need to bring is your basic toiletries and any groceries you'll need for some home cooking in the fully functional kitchen or on the grill. My only regret is that it was too cold outside to enjoy our morning coffee on the private deck overlooking the expanse of woods behind our cabin. I guess that means we'll be back when it's warmer!
This was one of the most memorable weekends away we've ever had. We plan on returning with friends/family the next time they are in town and staying in a larger cabin. Thank you for an enjoyable stay!
Response from Kishauwau Country Cabins - 02/09/2014
Wow, thank you for the kind words about our establishment and we are truly thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. We'll look forward to seeing you again sometime. Just a tip from us though. If you are looking to stay in a bigger family cabin for summer please be sure to not wait until last minute because chances are good that you won't get in.
This was a special day at Kishauwau Cabins for our family. We didn't stay long, and it was too cold to play outside, but we were together. The kids loved the hot tub, wood-burning stove and giggled until 2 am in the pitch black cabin when it was time for bed. There were more stars in the sky than I've ever seen. It was a wonderful family memory :) Read more

We are so glad you enjoyed another stay at kishauwau. However I just need to make note that the maximum amount of people we allow in a whirlpool cabin is 2 adults/2 kids. Simply for future reference.

Kishauwau the most relaxing vacation you can imagine!
We have been to Kishwauwau Country Cabins five times, and we can hardly wait for #6! It is such a pleasure to enjoy these beautiful cabins which are sparkling clean, nestled in a lovely wooded acreage on the Vermilion River. Kishauwau is beautiful all four seasons of the year. It is perfect for couples, and I'm sure families can enjoy this lovely area too. Read more

To Sandra & Jim,
We love to see the repeat guests because it tells us we are doing something right. And you are correct, even though we cater to a lot of couples looking to get away from their busy, hectic lives we cater to large family reunions or small ones all summer long. Thank you for the kinds words.

Best getaway away from the world
We went on our 1 year anniversary. It was so peaceful, quiet and romantic. Our cell phone barely worked, no internet, no wifi, no distractions. The best hospitality from the owners, and workers there. Very nice, caring people. We absolutely loved it. Time we needed for ourselves. This is the perfect place. We plan on going back. I can't wait.
My Fiance and I were looking for a place to go for a few days after the wedding to relax and unwind from all of the planning and stress of the big day. From researching to leaving, the whole experience was superb. The staff were quick with responses to my questions and made sure we received the cabin that we had hoped for. When we got there, they blew us away with their hospitality! It was like being a part of the family and they made sure we knew that we were the guests and they planned on making sure we were comfortable. The sense of genuinity and trust that came from the owners was amazing. A "come and go" style video selection, self serve amenities (razors, tooth paste, and even a s'more kit), and fridge/freezer with food made us feel at home. Front porch delivery of firewood with kindling and newspaper topped off the personal service. They did everything in their power to take care of their customers! The cabin itself was perfect for 2 people looking to unplug from the world. We cooked a few meals for ourselves in the kitchenette, had coffee on the front porch one morning, and sat on the loveseat and stared at the fire. Very cozy! The facilities were exceptionally clean. I would expect a cabin to be somewhat hard to maintain and keep clean the way these were. They blew my standard out of the water. The cabins are located within a 10 minute drive of a few towns, including Utica, where we spent some time. Starved Rock State Park is also close and can provide some nice sightseeing and dining along the river. These cabins were the perfect get-a-way for a mini-honeymoon, and my wife and I look forward to renting the larger cabins for a family retreat in the future! I highly recommend Kishauwau Country Cabins and look forward to returning in the future!

It's an amazing place.
I was looking for a place to take me and my wife away from the world, No phones, no wifi , no cable tv.
The cabin was super clean and the amenities were fabulous..
We were able to just get lost in each other attention.
Lovely setting in the woods
We had a nice time staying in the cabin. Lots of privacy & the hosts were very gracious.
After a month traveling in the USa, was Kishauwau a perfect place to find some rest: movies, whirlpool, nature walks, campfire,...
It's a very peaceful place.

Very quiet and clean.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. This was the best getaway from the real world. Very romantic for our one year anniversary. The whirlpool was a plus. And the cabin was kept very clean. It felt like home. We will be back for sure.
Tinley Park, IL
My husband and I and are 2 dogs spent 3 days here. It is the most beautiful piece of property I have ever seen. The cabin had all the comforts of home. It was very clean and well kept. The staff was friendly. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay and will definitely be going back there again. It was close to all the attractions. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.
Clean and cozy "camping"
What a wonderful place! Absolutely perfect for when you want the benefits of camping without a lot of hassle. My family of four (husband plus kids aged 4 and 2) absolutely loved our stay. Our cabin was incredibly clean and spacious with everything we needed. The kitchen had everything necessary for us to cook all of our meals, the tub was spacious and great, and the sheets were the softest we've ever had. The grounds at Kishauwau were absolutely beautiful and perfect for playing catch and just running around. Even though other people were there, our cabin and area felt very private, with our own grill, picnic table, and fire pit. The location is also great for exploring the area. We can't wait to return!
Coniglio Family Fun !
It was a wonderful family/pet vacation!
My family and I really enjoyed staying at Kishauwau cabins. It was very clean and relaxing. My girls and older doggie Lucy really loved spending time together and just having fun.
Rest & Relaxation
We spent two great nights here and loved every minute. It was a great getaway from our hectic lives in the city. Our two young girls also loved just playing outside and cooking over our campfire. The cabin was clean and comfortable. I would definitely come back again!
Another anniversary celebrated here! We stayed in the Chippewa, and loved its privacy! It is nestled clear in the back of the property w/the woods surrounding three sides of the cabin. The cabin is beautifully decorated, the Jacuzzi is huge, the bed was very comfortable, the TV screen was larger...I could go on and on, but the best thing about any of the cabins is the serene, peaceful atmosphere at Kishawau. It feels so good to get away from everything and focus on each other. We just can't say enough good about the people who run this place...they are amazing!! Great hospitality!
Thanks you, thank you, thank you!!!
Great convenient getaway!
Nice cabin with the convenience of a kitchen & bathroom, and the family dog was able to join us too. Conveniently located near Starved Rock and many other activities. A lot of outdoor space to enjoy, and cabins are spread out & not right next to each other. The cabins are just one big room (except the bathroom), have many windows so it's bright early in the morning, and have central air conditioning.
I loved this place. My husband and I went away for a much needed weekend for the two of us. We had a very relaxing time. I didn't mind the no cell phone and no t.v. (only dvd's or vcr's). We had coffee by the fire pit every morning. It was wonderful. The owners were extremely nice and accommodating. You get the camping experience without the tent. The "Wilderness" cabin was clean and had everything you needed for an enjoyable stay. Can't wait to go back.
Glen Ellyn, IL
The owners are wonderful. Within the first few hours of our stay, we decided to book a stay in September - this time with our dog. It was peaceful, & relaxing. They were very helpful with recommending places to eat and things to see. We had an amazing time. We also want to try to book a third stay in one of the larger cabins with friends.
Great, cozy cabin!
We stayed in the americana cabin and loved it! Very comfortable seating as well as a nice bed. We loved having the 2 person jacuzzi at the end of long hike at the nearby parks. It's only about a 10 minute drive from Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park and Buffalo State Park! The cabin was clean and there were plenty of towels. We had our own pit to make a bonfire in the front, as well as a picnic table and a nice view of the trees in the back. There is a kitchen with plenty of dishes and all of the basics, so you can stay in and cook your own meals. There is central air, which was great for the hot days! There is no internet and little to no cell reception on the campground. Although it's very nice to disconnect, I would have liked to have the option so that I could communicate with some friends who were coming to meet us but it worked out OK. Not sure there is much that they can do about the reception. Not a huge deal though. Cell reception is pretty good once you get out on the main road (at least for Verizon it is). The TV in the room was very small and outdated, so if you plan to spend time watching movies, you may be disappointed, but that's really the only downside to the cabin. Everything else was great and we would definitely stay again next time we visit the area! Possibly in an even bigger cabin. I've already recommended it to friends too!
Great, close getaway
We are from the Chicagoland area, and after only an hour drive, felt like we were a world away. Check in was easy and at that time, I found out that fire wood purchase was cash only. I had no cash on me at the time, however the owner provided me with three bundles and told me to bring the cash when I got some. I was able to do that by the time we left. I noticed immediately that the kitchen and bathroom in the cabin were very clean. The cabin was about a ten minute car ride from Starved Rock. We really enjoyed the "camping" atmosphere with the creature comforts of a refrigerator and a shower. Good locations, good facilities, and friendly laid back staff. All for basically the price of a hotel room. We would return.
We loved it!
Ok, well what can we say? We already booked the cabin for two more weekends, one in the month of July and one for august. It was such a wonderful experience. My husband and I both have very stressful lives and this was a perfect get away for us. The unit was very clean, beautiful view and peaceful.
Rock Island, IL
Unplug and Reconnect
The most wonderful place to unplug from cell phones, television, and everyday life, and reconnect with the people you love and nature. We cannot express how much we loved being there. We will definitely return soon.
It took us forever too find a great place to stay thats close by to where we live (Chicago). It was a nice place to get away to. Theres many places to visit and explore around the area. There was a firepit in front of the cabin which we loved. We went on many different trails (starved rock etc.) and kayaking! It b was a blast! We only stayed one night and it was not enough! At check out date, we were still debating on staying another night, we decided not to. When we were driving back home we knew we made a big mistake not staying another night. I really wish we did! We are definitely thinking about going back real soon!
Thanks for the great service!

We enjoyed a relaxing get-away from city life and work.
The cabin was comfortable and relaxing, and the beautiful rolling green knolls provided the perfect setting for a weekend of escape from work, worries, and busy noisy city life. The only thing missing was a toaster in the kitchen. Read more
Response from Kishauwau Country Cabins - 06/25/2013
So glad you enjoyed your stay. Just an FYI for future. Every kitchen has a toaster located in the cabinetry under the counters. Sorry, we just don't like to clutter up the counter space.
Perfect rustic luxury cabin!
This was the perfect mix between rustic and luxury! It was clean, quiet, thoughtfully appointed and the bed was so comfortable!
The owners were friendly and never over-bearing.
It was the perfect honeymoon for us!
We came to go to Starved Rock, but there was a flood disaster and it was closed(along with most of the neighboring town). We still had a great time at the campsite and we'll definitely be back! It was such a peaceful, relaxing stay and the owners were great.
Price us a little high but you get your money's worth. All of the staff is super friendly and the cabins have everything you could ask for. Will be a vacation destination for my family in the future.
The Danceys and Debords
Perfect meeting place for family and friends
We were a good of 17 people who were celebrating a 30th birthday with a weekend retreat for friends and family. We were greeted by the owner and were made welcome with extra services explained. The hosts were available if we needed anything but did not impose upon our privacy.
The cabins were well stocked and very comfortable. We really enjoyed the hot tub. We ate all our meals on site --many cooked over a campfire. Would definitely hope to return.

Only one word: Wonderful!
We found Kishauwau to be just what we wanted - a peaceful getaway location for us and our two dogs. Very close to Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks. If you're looking for a place to get away from the crowds, this is the place. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Will absolutely be back.
Peace and Harmony
Our stay was fantastic. We had time to talk, read relax and reconnect. In the bustle and hustle of everyday living a disconnect occurs and this time alone gave us an opportunity to reflex and plan for the future. Also, it is so nice to have the honor system. The open door policy is so nice. The quiet and the complete darkness at night was just awesome. In the city there is so much noise it also felt strange. And the tub, that was great. Only problem, my husband is a bit stiff and had a slight problem getting out but we managed. I am glad you got the journal. And as I said we will return soon. Have a great Memorial Day!!! I forgot the cabin was great and we loved the swing on the porch.
Had a great time, peaceful, and relaxing!!!
This was the best cabin! It was a wonderful getaway for me and my boyfriend. We can't wait to go back, it was perfect in every aspect. It's a must!!!
Relaxing and tranquil night in the country
Needed a night away from the city and found the most perfect spot at Kishauwau. Loved being able to bring our dog and have her run free. Hiking in nearby Starved Rock was wonderful. Walking the grounds of the cabin by the river was awesome. Friendliness of staff - outstanding. Loved the Dvds for the kids (and grown ups but we enjoyed an outside fire) and baked goods. Would highly recommend.
Spring Break Rest and relaxation
I actually have mixed feelings about writing a review. On one hand, I love Kishauwau so much I want to share it with the world. However, on the other hand, I selfishly want to keep it as a secret to myself so there will always be a cabin available.
I like the changes that have taken place since my last visit...leaving garbage on the patio is one less thing to think about upon departure...so that is a nice change. I love the ease of online reservations. Checking out is also now a snap...leave the keys and go. I miss having the chance to say how wonderful everything was, but I like the ease of the new system.
Although my friends think I am nuts heading out there and hiking, boating, and skydiving by myself, I feel very safe in my warm cozy cabin in the woods.
On my last visit I found it extremely tempting to buy a piece of, what I am assuming was Terisa's homemade chocolate cake. That is just one example of the many at home special touches that Kishauwau is all about.
Well, enough chatter for now, I need to book my next stay.
Beautiful, relaxing, and great hospitality!!
I cannot say enough great things about kishauwau on the vermillion!! We stayed in the dog friendly, whirlpool cabin and it was so cozy! I love all of the things that were provided to us so we did not need to overpack. And we loved that we were able to bring our dog along(-: the staff here was so kind and was always there to answer any questions, provided games, movies, menus, etc. they go above and beyond! I was looking to get away from my busy, stressful schedule and thats exactly what I did at this relaxing getaway! My boyfriend and I cannot wait to go back this summer(-:
It was somewhat disappointing.
The remoteness of the location was great, and the distance between cabins makes it a very private experience which is what we were looking for. The whirlpool and hot water heater worked well. The wood burning fireplace was very disappointing. We even bought wood in Utica but could not get a fire going. We have our own fireplace at home and could have brought wood that would have worked. It would have been a good idea to tell us before we arrived about this situation. We understand that it is very difficult to get any kind of tv reception in your area, but the TV needs to be updated to the flat screen so that the dvd's are up to date.
It was excellent experience
We had a good time. We enjoyed our stay at Kishauwau Cabin rental. I would like to suggest you is that please keep king size bed for 2 adult and 2 kids
A cabin that feels like home
When you first rent a cabin, all types of thoughts about staying in a cabin run wild. Will it be run down? Will it be in a location near places you want to go? Is the cost reasonable or is it money down the drain? We were quickly relieved of all negative thoughts when we arrived at Kishauwau on the Vermilion cabins. Check in was easy and the staff courteous. Our cabin was very clean and the overall layout was open and inviting. A nice woodstove was in our cabin and was very enjoyable every night of our 3 night stay. The whirlpool tub worked perfectly and was a welcome relief following our days of hiking in nearby Starved Rock State Park. The views from our cabin were spectacular as well. The back of the cabin overlooked forest and the Vermilion River. This view could be seen from the fully equipped kitchen or the back porch of the cabin. And this property also offered free Dvd's and VHS tapes for our viewing. Basically, it was a cabin, on a wonderful property with views, that was clean, large and well equipped for a short or long stay. I would highly recommend this cabin getaway!

We really love this place.
We come here because it is a wonderfully peaceful place and also, when you chose to go, near several interesting places including two state parks and several small towns. If you want to relax and connect with your partner; come to Kishauwau. Relax, connect and be happy. Who could ask for more.
Everything was as advertised. It's nice to know that special places, so close to home still exist.
perfect, better then pics
It was so relaxing that the other two 23 year olds i went with fell asleep before 9 pm and our checkin was at 4pm. We grilled and slept like babies! Couldnt think of anything they didnt supply! Im coming back asap great prices for what you get! - I never write reviews! But this was worth it!
Nice Weekend Getaway
The cabin was clean and the foest setting was peaceful. The owners are friendly and give you your privace. We ate a Brandys one night which was $$$ but their sea food platter for two was well worth the $. I would go back to these cabins, probably in the fall to enjoy the parks and leaves. It was wet and cold when we were there but we grabbed some movies from the office, lit a fire and enjoyed some good wine.
My wife and I stayed at the Kishauwau cabins for a weekend in March 2013. The customer service from initial contact to checkout was excellent. We checked in on Friday afternoon and stayed through Sunday afternoon. We stayed in the "Americana" cabin. The cabin was very clean when we got there. The kitchen was great and had mostly everything you could need. Firewood was promptly brought to us, and the wood burning stove was clean and function perfectly. We played cards & games, watched movies, read books, and generally had a very relaxing, nice stay. The hot tub in the bathroom was the perfect size for both of us to enjoy together:). The view from the back of the cabin was beautiful! The americana looks directly over the Vermilion river. We took one night to go into LaSalle and eat at the Uptown Cafe. It was excellent! I would highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for a nice relaxing weekend getaway.

The Perfect Hideaway for your getaway!
If you want to visit a place that is quiet and private, Kishauwau is it! Kishauwau is the best place to go to spend quality time with your husband/wife. The cabins are just beautiful - and so nice and clean! My husband and I especially enjoy the wood burning stove, which is why we have always visited Kishauwau in the winter - but it is open all of the other seasons too! The ample-size whirlpool tubs are good for soaking and chatting. Give Kishauwau a try - you won't be sorry!
When my husband and i went it was for my birthday it was so relaxing we didnt want to leave this place is so nice and clean in the cabins the wood burning stove was so warming and relaxing they r very friendlybpeople we also brought our dog and she loved havin the open yard to run around i plan to bring my wholebfamily backbin the summer time Read more
Response from Kishauwau Country Cabins - 03/27/2013
We are so glad you enjoyed our place. We try really hard to make everyones stay enjoyable. I would think fast about getting in with a whole family for this summer. Weekends are pretty much taken up with the bigger family cabins but we do have quite a bit of weekday availability left. Let us know if we can help.
The pictures do not do the property ant justice. A great get away with my husband and a couple of friends. Looking forward to returning and making it a regular experience! Love love love that it is pet friendly. The privacy and serenity is something worth telling everyone you know! Read more
Response from Kishauwau Country Cabins - 03/02/2013
We hear it over and over again, "the pictures don't do it justice" and I love that. They were just taken by me and my fairly decent camera, nothing professional. I love that people come in and are blown away because it is so much more than they expected. We're glad you liked it and hope to see you back again some time.
This is a wonderful place!
We have been coming to Kishauwau for over ten years. The place never fails to amaze us. The cabins are very clean, the staff is very friendly and the grounds are very pretty. Our 8 and 9 year old girls love it too. Relaxing around the fire and watching a movie is a great way to spend time together. Especially after beautiful hikes at Starved Rock and Mathhiessen State Park. We hadn't even left yet and the kids were asking when we can come back!
Amazingly relaxing. 2nd year here and will b back every year
Best weekend away in along time!
My wife and I stayed at the Osage. It had just snowed the night before and it was just so beautiful. We really enjoyed the stay and the use of the wood burning stove. This is our 4th stay and we are looking forward to the next visit.
We recently stayed overnight at Kishauwau and it was a wonderful experience. It was a bitterly cold couple of days but the cabin was warm, cozy and comfortable. The only complaint either one of us had was that our stay was much too short. We'll be back when we can stay a bit longer.

Our get away place
When you just need to take time to breathe and reconnect with the loved one in your life Kishauwau is the place. We go for a long weekend for our anniversary. I just wish we had discovered it sooner than 10 years ago.
Could not possibly ask for a nicer get away.
Relaxing clean cabins
Exellent weekend get away, friendly people, private and very relaxing cabins and property.
Romantic, secluded getaway
How can I say enough about this place? If you're thinking about booking a cabin, do it right away! You will not regret it! Cabin living was like a home away from home (and I'm not the outdoor-sy type.) It was quiet, private, and very clean (the cleanest place I have ever stayed.) As a side note, I got engaged here and could not have been happier with my fiancé's choice! The cabins are so romantic and the whirlpool is huge! Larger than you can see in pictures. The location is out of the way, which I loved; it was an easy 10 minutes to Starved Rock, and maybe 15 to the great Mill St. in Utica. We were welcomed when we arrived and we knew we would be taken care of from there (homemade treats for a small price, an updated free movie collection to choose from, just to name a couple.) This is my first time reviewing a place that I have stayed at, because it is so great. In fact, we have decided to get married at Starved Rock and there is no question where we'll be staying!
The cabin was very cozy and the owners are wonderful people! The stay was great and the scenery can't be beat. We will definitely be back!
Musta' Had Cabin Fever
I needed to get me and Cheyenne (my golden dog) out of the city and Kishauwau was the perfect destination. Yes!dog Friendly! The Commanchi cabin was spacious, with a sofa in front of a woodburning stove and space for my yoga mat in front of the DVD player (there are 1000's of movies compliments of the owners), w/a very functional kitchen for preparing meals with foods you bring in; I grilled out for most of my dinners. The big whirlpool bath added a little DIY Spa treat to the overall rustic charm. The queen bed was comfortable enough for a mid-day nap and the grounds are vast, beautiful and safe for off-leash romps. I discovered a few nearby antique shops as I was leaving Kishauwau. This was my 2nd stay.
Our family comes to these cabins at least once a year and it never disappoints. The staff is not intrusive and it can be relaxing, romantic, or adventurous. Would recommend this to anyone who is looking for those qualities. Only con is the hot tub was not functional in this particular cabin, but we never had this problem before.

romantic clean and cozy made my girlfriend love me more,
love it. the set up and the locatin looking towards the woods.the hospitality was great.welcome was written all over the place. thats how we felt.
A much needed weekend
We were looking for someplace to get away for a weekend for some quiet time. Found Kishauwau on the Vermillion on the internet. Had a great weekend. Loved the location as we went to both Starved Rock State Park and Mathiason State Park. 10 minute drive max. Cooked all our meals in the cabin. Had everything we needed except we brought all our groceries with us. Watch a total of 6 video/DVD. Nice not to have TV or interuptions. Love the Wall of video's and Dvd's to chose from. Bought firewood from the owners. Used the wood burning stove to sit by while watching videos. Comfy bed. And the best thing is that our dog was able to come with us. Thank you for a great weekend. Could not have been better.
a very peaceful, cozy getaway.
My family and I had a wonderful weekend getaway. It was cozy and quiet, just what we needed for some good bonding. We used no electronics, went hiking, enjoyed the wood stove and the kids loved it. Also enjoyed some area activities.
The Web site is accurate, everything was "as advertised". It is low-tech, quiet, cozy and rural. Beautiful, peaceful, relaxing and clean.
we'll definitely be back.
This was our second trip to Kishauwau on the Vermilion. Our first trip was wonderful we wanted to come back in the winter. Kishauwau is an incredible place to relax and getaway. We love it here.
Never does reviews
We love Kishauwau on the Vermillion. It's very romantic and a great place to stay for hiking at Starved Rock!
Better than I could have imagined!
My boyfriend and I booked our little getaway last minute to celebrate our 1 year anniversary away from the hustle and bustle of Milwaukee. Our experience was unforgetable, we immmediatly felt at ease in our well equipt cabin and even though the other cabins are not far, we felt very secluded. We enjoyed searching through the movie and game selection in their cozy office that is conveniently open 24hrs. We were only there for 2 days but the memories of dancing in the kitchen to FM radio, relaxing in a bubbly hot tub and the heart to heart talks on porch swing will last a lifetime. We look foward to our next romantic trip and also plan on bringin friends and family for a more social experience as well. Thank you for such a wonderful place to vacation!
Always a beautiful place!
This is a wonderful place. It was our third time staying and we will be back. Beautiful views and really relaxing. Super clean and very comfy!
My boyfriend and I stay at Kishauwau on the Vermillion on New Years and we had an amazing stay. It was very relaxing and the people who work there were very pleasant.

As always - Absolutely Wonderful
My wife and I have been staying at almost annually at Kishauwau for the past 20 years, missing just five visits over that time, four during the time we lived out of the country. We cannot say enough good about this place. It is a sacred place to us. We stay in the Winnebago as it is a dog friendly cabin and our Schitzu loves it. This last time, January 2013, we stayed for 9 nights, our longest stay yet. This is our retreat from the demands of our tech-no crazy world. We love it that there's no cable TV, no phone in the cabin, and no wi-fi. We are always personally re-energized by our stay here and this time our marriage was strengthened beyond belief. We have been married for 32 + years and have very strong marriage, now even stronger due to the time we had for just the two of us. Kishauwau may not be for everyone but it is certainly a wonderful haven for us. The staff there are great, friendly, warm, and very attentive to guests needs.
Nice cabin. Quiet. Nice owners. Great hikining near by at starved rock and mathesian state parks. Great pizza at Peru.
This was our second time to Kishauwa, previously in summer time. The stove keeps the cabin warm and of course the whirlpool tub is awesome! We love being able to bring our dog. Kishauwa is quiet and beautiful, an excellent option for the area and there is a lot to see with Starved Rock, eagles, antiquing and staying in enjoying the quiet. The family offers wood for sale and has a lodge open to guests 24/7 where you can use games, movies, magazines, etc. Highly recommend!
I am always impressed with Kishauwau. It is like all of the things that could go wrong have been thought of and eliminated prior to our visits. 10 on 10 scale. We will be back.
More than we could have hoped for!
This was our first visit to Kishauwau on the Vermilion, but it will not be our last! Set in a peaceful, beautiful area, it's the perfect place for some time away from the fast pace of life. We stayed in the Winnebago cabin, and was thrilled with how it was furnished and decorated. We had more than enough towels and the kitchen was nicely stocked. It was clean and very well maintained. We were there in the winter time, so we got to use the wood burning stove. Firewood and kindling were available for a low price. It was comfortable and welcoming and we could have stayed alot longer. The staff was friendly and very kind and made our experience much more than giving us a key and letting us fend for ourselves. They explained things to us, had plenty of videos and games and books to use for free. They recommended things to do in town. It was the best experience we've had at a lodging place.
Peaceful break/close to Chicago
A quick drive out of Chicago but a huge leap to simple, wooded cabins with peace & quiet. If you're in the mood to sit by a wood firestove, watch movies, read and cook a great meal, this is the place. Easy walk down to the uninhabited Vermilion River through the wooded property and short drive to hikes at Starved Rock. Accomodations are simple (nothing fancy) and spotlessly clean. The owners are on premises always generous and helpful. We have been here many times, all seasons, and never had anything but a refreshing experience.
A Wonderful Time
We have been to Kishauwau several times in the past and have always enjoyed ourselves. This trip was no exception. As always we were happy with the cabin as well as the staff. We normally stay in Uncle Jacks cabin but this time we stayed in the americana cabin. It was nice and cozy and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the wood burning stove and the warmth it gave the cabin. We love the area. From the shopping to the hiking and just the plain laid back attitude of most the people in the area. We highly recommend Kishauwau on the Vermillion to anybody who is looking to just get away and relax. The staff there is great. They leave you alone, yet you always know they are there if you need anything. We will be going back again as soon as we are able too.
We Love goin there its def a nice quiet peaceful relaxing get away .The Rooms are very nice Love the nice Hottub in the batheoom. We Will def be Looking fwd to our next visit. Thanks for having us.
this place wasn't just perfect, it was better than I knew I wanted. I tell everyone who is looking for an easy getaway to go here!
I didn't want to leave!
What a fantastic place to stay! The staff treated us like old friends, the cabin was spotless and cozy, the view from the back porch of our Hunters Cabin was amazing... I couldn't have expected anything better, honestly! It was so quiet and peaceful, such a great place to go to get away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. I wanted to stay forever, and I really can't wait to return for our next trip.

Beautiful in the fall!
The cabin was clean and nice. The trees were changing colors and beautiful in early October. Missed TV and Internet connection after a while.
Kishauwau holds a special place in our hearts. It is a home away from home Iin that you feel so welcome and the cabins are warm and clean and cozy. When ever I leave the city and know I am heading here my soul takes a deep breath.
Mount Prospect, IL
Two of my girlfriends and I stayed at Kishauwau for a weekend to relax in a quiet setting and boy did we get what we asked for! The grounds are beautiful and backup to what I think is a forest preserve. The cabin we stayed in was really clean and had everything we needed for an entire weekend without leaving (dishes, towels, movies, games, firewood, etc.) All three of us vowed to come back again either for another girls weekend or bring our husbands for a romantic getaway. The wood burning stove was great and kept us entertained all day long. The beds were also super comfortable. Can't wait to return!
Finally, time for each other!
My wife and I have been coming here for over 20 years and this place never disappoints us. It's clean and inviting. The cabins are secluded and afford you all the privacy you can ask for. Everything is here that you will need, a kitchen stocked with pots, pans, silverware, etc. A huge private hot tub, a cozy fireplace, no phones, no tv (VHS & Cd's available for free from the main cabin-or bring your own), a comfortable bed, and a perfect size to your cabin, not too big or too small!
It's quite and easy to get to. And as a bonus it is still family run (owners live on the property) and are so very accomadating.
Last but not least you have 3 state parks within a 15 drive, several small towns and quant places to eat.
We have been keeping this place quite and would only tell our close friends and family because we wanted to keep the place to ourselves but on the other hand we wish Kishauwua great success and that it will be around for decades to come so my wife and I could still find our maricle on earth, "our little cabin in the woods!"
Arlene and Michael Brennan
Enjoy these pleasant and refreshing cabins!
We have been vacationing at Kishauwau on the Vermilion River for some 20 years. We have stayed for weekends and as long as six weeks. We always feel that we would enjoy staying longer. This place is a bit of heaven...peaceful, calm and friendly. The service we receive from the owners and staff is superb. We take walks on the property and at the three state parks nearby. We read, talk, cook, visit, catch up and strengthen our ties to one another. We are both retired now and could choose many other places to go, but "our Kishauwau" always feels like our second home. We come back refreshed and renewed every time! Go! You will love it!

visit # 12 to Kishauwau
My wife, son and I have now visited Kishauwau for 12 years, each time in the autumn. It is a tradition that we greatly enjoy as a chance to relax, take a hike in the woods, play frisbee, and briefly forget about everything else. The cabins are great - always clean, comfortable, and quiet, and not overly fancy. Starved Rock is nearby, and we enjoy the little towns and orchards in the area. Perfect for us.
Romantic & Relaxing
We enjoyed visiting Kishauwau again. It is very clean & comfortable. We love relaxing by the fire. This is a very peaceful place. We will go back many more times.
the Hunter cabin
We checked in Friday Nov 2-stayed 2nts..it was wonderful..We were able to have an outside fire and then when it got too cold we had a great fire inside and watched some movies...It was so relaxing..Saturday hiked 6miles at Starved Rock State Park that is only minutes away and then it was great to come home and soak in the double whirlpool tub...It is so nice to have a full kitchen so that you dont have to rush out for breakfast or just be able to have a snack and some cold drinks...We loved it and are already trying to figure out when we can get back there next year.
Well, the surrounding area is beautiful. Pine trees and lots of open space. The only drawback are the lights in the cabin! Very bright overhead lights attached to fans! No dimmer switch. I found it extremely unconfortable to read in the kitchen or the living room. No reading lamps to speak of. I brought this up to to manager and she was thoughtful about it but still why on earth would you have these bright lights in a very cozy cabin to begin with?
Hopefully, they will fix this problem!
We Keep Coming Back
Quiet and relaxing, it puts you in toouch with yourself and natu
We have been visiting the Starved Rock area via Kishauwau on the Vermillion for 10 years. Each time we stay we have had the most relaxing excellent time. We have done Kishauwau with the kids, family, friends, alone, everyone likes it. Great place to get away from it all.

The most peaceful place to get away from everything!
This was our second stay at the cabin. We loved it. It is so peaceful and quiet. We loved that we could bring our dog with us. He loved the spacious grounds and all of the trees. The cabins are very clean and so cozy. The whirlpool tub is my favorite amenity. It is so nice that you can borrow a movie or two and sit in the comfortable recliners and keep warm by the fireplace. I like having the kitchen, we had homemade chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. It's so nice that you supply all the dishes and cookware needed. It's like being at home, but better. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. We will be back soon and so will several of our friends.
Relaxing, Peaceful, Romantic
We had a wonderful, relaxing anniversary getaway. We were minutes away from the great hiking at Mattheisen State Park and Starved Rock. The whirlpool and woodburning stove were a great way to unwind after a day of hiking!
Saint Louis, MO
Nice place to get away, enjoy nature and decompress.
We really enjoyed the cabin we rented recently near Starved Rock State Park. It was about 7 miles from the park entrance and had everything we needed for an enjoyable get away from the city. It was nice to be able to take our dogs and the cabin had been maintained such that we could hardly tell another pet had ever been there. There is just enough spacing between cabins to provide privacy. The folks running the place were very pleasant and accommodating, and have a wonderful location to enjoy nature and decompress. The hiking in the area is great. We definitely plan a return visit in the future.
Awesome retreat for a weekend get-away, lot's of hiking and some very nice restaurants and local bars. The cabins are fully functional and the fire-pits add the extra special touches.
We stayed for our honeymoon and it was perfect! The views are amazing, the wildlife is spectacular. You don't even need to leave your cabin. We will definitely be back!
North Barrington, IL
We loved every minute at Kishauwau and would like to have stayed
We stayed at the Winnebago cabin, dog friendly and all! even a jacuzzi. We visited all 3 State Parks just on 1 weekend. Kishauwau was cozy, homey, and clean beyond all expectations! This was our 2nd trip to Kishauwau and we can't wait to try out all the cabins. What serenity, natur pur, Starlings were migrating, we saw bald eagles, pelicans, glorious red oaks, cypress trees, everywhere it smelled of pines...like our homeland Switzerland. We recommend Kishauwau to all hikers and nature lovers close to the great parks. Way to go Theresa and family, keep up the fantastic work!
Sincerely, P & D Klick
Excellent get away!
Stayed two nights in a very well equipped cabin with all the amenities for a family of four. The location and grounds were great and the staff were very accomodating. We will be back.
One word - peaceful
We've been staying at Kishauwau off and on for 7 years. No computer, no phone ringing, no TV blaring. Just the peace and restoration of the woods.
The cabins are well-furnished, comfortable and clean. A wide array of cookware allows you to cook in or dine out.
Location, location, location. Near Starved Rock, I & M Canal Trail and Mathiessen State Park. The fall scenery was gorgeous and the hiking stupendous.
Big bonus - Kishauwau allows us to bring our beast along. Our mutt, Andy, loved the weekend stay as much as we did.
Highly recommend for couples' getaway or a family reunion. We've done both!
We had a totally wonderful relaxing stay.
I wrote in the guest book a long review on how we totally enjoyed our stay. The surroundings, the cleanliness, really everything was great.Well stocked kitchen. We will definitely be back again in the near future.Totally had a good and relaxing time there.
We really enjoyed the cabin and the atmosphere . It was perfect for a couple to get away and have some real one on one time. There was plenty of things to do , including hiking a winery and good eats!!
This was are 2ndu time staying in there cottages ..It is so peaceful and relaxing!!
Great place to relax.
Cabins are very cozy and spotless. The cabins have all the comforts of home including appliances and utencils, you step out the door and you are in the gerat outdoors. Cell phones dont work, no internet, no tv reception but the office has tons of movies to use at no cost. Its a great place to relax. First time here and will be back next year. It was so close to home, about a hour but felt like so far away.
Such a great place to get away!!!
My boyfriend and I stayed at Kishauwau and had a fabulous time. It is such a great place to just get away from it all and relax. We sat by the campfire and really enjoyed the time we had there. I would highly advise visiting this little home away from home :)

Great stay - will be back
The cabin far exceeded our expectations (based on the cabins at Starved Rock Park). The grounds are beautifully maintained, staff was very helpful. Very dog friendly.
very nice and relaxing and enjoyable nice very private lots of woods to roam in
A very quiet and peaceful retreat with nature.
It is everything we were looking for. Quiet grounds surrounded by trees. Hiking along the river and enjoying the wildlife in their natural habitat.
Very clean cabins that are built with high quality materials.
The staff is friendly and accomodating.
We look forwards to our next visitand would recommend it to get away from the entrapments of the hi-tech world.
We loved our Cabin, it was perfect. It was our one year anniversary and the cabin, the woods, Starved rosk, wine, eateries. It was all great.
The location of the Cabin was perfect, it was almost picture perfect. Private enough yet close enough to multiple places.
We plan on coming back in the near furture and will recommend to all of our friends an family.
Thank you for making us feel like we were family.
A wonderful place to "Get back to Basics"
We had a very nice time at Kishauwau. Already planning a trip back there. Refreshing change from the hectic tecnology infused world we're used to living in!We were able to bring our dogs-so it really was a family vacation!

A "Real" Getaway
Living two very busy professional lives, sometimes you just need to "get away from it all." Kishauwau provided just that. I was at Kishauwau in the early 1970s when it was a Boy Scout camp and was excited to find it now run as a retreat. The camp layout is exactly as I remember it from my days there as a camper and as a staff member. The addition of the modern cabins where the campsites used to be is a nice touch in its transformation from Scout camp to peaceful retreat.
There are no busy highways to listen to. There is simply the sounds of nature echoing off of countless gorgeous trees that surround you. For an even deeper outdoors spirit, take a short walk down to the Vermilion river. It's quite serene.
Cellular service is spotty at best, so you may as well leave your smartphones and computers at home. Walk up to the office and grab yourself some movies. Take a hike around the camp. Spend time at the serenity coi pond. Go for a run. Cook some good steaks on the grill. Read a great book. Hakuna matata (no worries). Chillax.
If you leave Kishauwau in the same uptight condition you came then - well - that's your own fault. We'll be back for sure. It's a great place for a family retreat or a romantic getaway.
Jane & Ken
This is a beautiful, friendly place. The cabin was clean and lovely with everything you need. The location is ideal with nice views, a good walk to the Vermillion and a quick drive to Starved Rock. I totally recommend it.
So many good things to say about this place, the weather, and the staff! After an initial, small snag with the first cabin assignment, we (husband and I) were given an even better place to stay, near to the water, with our pup. Nice surprise: The sweet, huge retriever, Cookie, who lives there, and acts as an impromptu tour guide! :) She took us down to the water, and hung out with us and our dog all afternoon, as we explored the river (water was low, so we got to walk in quite far). The weather was sunny and breezy the week we were there, and nights clear.
We used the fire pit, located off the cabin, in the evening, and couldn't have been nicer (Recommend the kindling kits, btw).
After fires and nighttime walks, we enjoyed the DVD/VCR provided, to watch a series of remarkably bad, cheesy movies selected from the "library" in the main office. Super fun!
Overall, a really pleasant, peaceful experience - where we almost felt we had the grounds to ourselves. A little pricy, but clearly a well-run operation, and worth it. Recommended! :)
Great cabin, very relaxing weekend. We will be back!
Our experience was very relaxing!
My husband and I stayed to celebrate our wedding anniversary! We had a wonderful time. The cabin at Kishauwau was so peaceful and beautiful. We have three children and I cannot remember the last time I was that relaxed! Anyone that wants to get away to experience peace and relaxation I would definitely recommend staying in a cabin at Kishauwau on the Vermilion!!
This peaceful retreat hiding in the woods was perfect for reliev
Our stay was causal and complete from the first phone call to the moment we drove out to go home. We loved the neat and stylish cabin, the privacy in spite of other cabins in the area, and the outdoor ammenities (picnic table, fire pit, porch swing). The closeness (just 1 hour from our home)was perfect for driving up after getting off work in the evening, and getting back for afternoon work a few days later. We have lived here over 30 years, and had no idea Kishauwau was there! We will definitely be back, and already have friends asking about it for themselves.
Stay at Hunters Cabin
We really enjoyed our stay at Hunters Cabin. The cabin was very spacious and clean when we arrived. The staff was very kind at the time of check in. The tranquil environment was a fantastic break from busy city life.

Awesome Place to Stay
Very nice and secluded, but not too far from anything in the area either.
Cozy and Relaxing
This was our first time at Kishauwau -- but it will most certainly not be our last! From the moment we reserved our cabin, the owners were welcoming and accommodating. We were thrilled to find a place that allowed dogs and even happier upon our arrival. Everything was idyllic. The cabins was spotless and felt just like home. We can't wait to come back! Thank you!

Peaceful, relaxing and very enjoyable time and place
We were very lucky to get a cabin someone had canceled out on. It was a last minute anniversary trip for us, that turned out so well and we were able to bring our dog too. Kishauwau was just what we needed. Very quite & romantic. Our Cabin was very clean & cozy. Loved the whirlpool tub. Loved the whole place. Lots to do around the area. Did some hiking, wine tasting & shopping. Hoping to go back next year. We would like to keep this place a secret also, but when I was looking on the web I found these reviews very helpful. So glad I read them & decided to give Kishauwau a chance. Especially when we saw how busy Starved Rock was. Was very happy to be staying in a nice, quite & clean place.

Did not want to leave!
My husband and I loved our stay there! It was so relaxing and quiet. The King's were so helpful on our questions about good places to eat. We are going back again next year for sure!

An suprisingly, unexpected wonderful getaway.
It was a great experience, from learning about the rentals, making reservations, the stay and check out. It was the first time we brought our dog, we were afraid to see what those accommodations were like. This cabin and grounds were spotless. I would never have known other dogs stayed there. I cringe when I go to hotels, I feel like I have to disinfect everything, when I walked in to this cabin, it was so warm and welcoming, I had no concerns. It was a perfect getaway for my husband and I, to spend undivided time with each other. There was no TV, (you can watch DVR & VHS movies), no internet or phones. It was just what we needed, a getaway from it all. There are many things to do nearby, we, being older and just wanting peace and quiet, didn't enjoy any of them, but the cabin had a binder, with listings of all things going on. There was a lot. The cabin was fully equipped, they all have picnic tables, fire pits, grills, outside sitting areas. It was really nice. I will definitely return. It is a place for anyone.
A quiet and relaxing place to stay
The people were helpfull and nice, would stay again, would recommend to everyone. just don't sleep on the hide a bed it's hard iron frame no padding, we took a air bed for the kids. worked out OK.
The owners were so nice and made sure we had everything we needed. the cabin was so well kept and clean! They thought of everything, down to Dixie cups in the bathroom. It was so quaint and nice and quiet and inexpensive! much better than a hotel or resort. so close to starved rock. super
cozy and nice. I started planning my next visit before I'd even left!!!
Awesome clean woodsy facility with great owners! I will be back soon.
We had a nice time , defiantly will return! Clean and spacious cabins!!!
We had such a relaxed weekend in these clean cozy cabins. This place has everything you could ask for - porch swing, BBQ, firepit, comfy beds, clean clean clean!! Loved that we could bring the dogs too. That's so rare these days. We will be back!!
Peaceful and Relaxing Getaway
My wife and I were looking for a brief two night getaway to unwind and rest. I grew up going to Kishuwau with my family and the Cabins continue to impress. We stayed in a cabin that faced a wooded ravine and was slightly more secluded from the others. The whirlpool tub was excellent, the cabin cozy, and close to some great restaurants and hiking trails.
Would return in a heartbeat!
I found Kishauwau on the Vermilion by accident when I was searching for cabins within driving distance from Chicago. The location was great (about 2 hours from the city) and the cabins looked lovely but I was sold when I saw that we could bring the dog. What's a family trip without the dog!
I had high expectations and Kishauwau did not disappoint. To be clear, this is a no-frills place but that is exactly what we were looking for. The Commanche cabin was clean and had everything that we needed (even some pokers for roasting marshmallows). We had a fire pit and a charcoal grill but what we really loved was the main office. They leave it open and have a wide selection of games, Dvds and VHS tapes. We couldn't resist watching Sixteen Candles on VHS - the way it was meant to be seen!
If you are looking for an easy, quiet (no internet, spotty cell reception) get-away then this is the place for you. We will definitely be back!
An excellent option to get away from Chicago. Cabins are far enough from each other that they feel private. Fire pits and grills are a great addition to each cabin.
Lockport , Il
I really enjoyed my stay with my husband. It was quiet and relaxing. The cabin was stocked with almost everything you needed to feel at home. I loved the fact that you could pick out a movie and didnt have to pay for any of them.

a cabin of our own
We work crazy hours, have kids, busy busy just like everyone else. I took my husband to these cabins for his birthday to relax, recharge, and hike around Starved Rock Trails. This was like having a cabin of your own. The property is beautiful, the people very nice and laid back, tha cabin adorable. The kitchen has all of the stuff you need, plus extra small things that were nice: dish soap, garbage sacks, paper towels ect. The bath tub huge! They have lots of pillows and quilts for coziness. The outside of our cabin was so private. We could not see anything from our fire pit area except woods and wildlife. They have huge oak trees eveywhere with a really neat trail that goes around the property to hike on. We can't wait to go back!

Perfect place for treating yourself to a quite and peaceful geta
We had a great time in the Zonta cabin. All cabins are nicely spaced out. The owners are working on a new koi point which is very pretty already. Check in/out took just a minute.
Love the fact that there is no cell phone (T-mobile), cable or internet service in the cabins. If you can't live without a phone, the owners offer you to use theirs. Owners are very friendly and nice to talk to.
The reason why we choose this place is because we could bring our senior dog with who had a great time laying around and smelling fresh air. The cabins are equipped with everything you need and really offer a lot of space. The owner's dog is a great entertainer and loves to play with kids.
It is just a short drive to the next town, Starved Rock or Matthiesen Park. We will be back soon, but probably stay longer next time.
It was a great experience and I told all my customers about it already:-)
Spotlessly clean in beautiful and pristine setting
We stayed 4 days with our dog. It was idyllic. The cabin (Winnebago) was huge with really clean bedding, kitchen, and general appearance (no bugs even though the area is teeming with wildlife).Whirlpool is huge and inviting-well-kept. The homey feeling extended to the decorative touches everywhere and 2 recliners that were to die for.
The a/c was terrific even during over 100 degree temps for us. The woodstove looks inviting for those winter getaways...we cannot wait to try it when we come back in cooler weather. And we are going back- again and again.
This is a super place for romantic weekends and families with children. Cabins are all situated apart with a private feeling around you. There are so many outdoor activities available-all within 15 minute drive- Starved Rock, quaint towns with historic homes, shopping and good dining! Kishawau has extensive info on all activities.
This is a family-run retreat that shows their love and care for the cabins, visitors, and maintaining Kishawau for years to come. One feels inclined to help preserve the living spaces and surroundings to further that end. If pet owners are responsible, it is wonderful for a dog to enjoy the wide open space too...with a leash.
To finish, I want to mention a journal that is kept in each cabin that visitors can tell of their "Kishawau" experience. Everyone always remarks that their stay was too short and that it is hard to get back to "the real world". Ditto!
Peacefulness beyond compare
We were just looking for some quiet alone time. This is the perfect place for that. The cabin was immaculate and the grounds were well manicured. The ammenities were an added bonus. Looking forward to the next time.
Will definitely revisit.
Exactly what we were hoping for. Camping minus the concerns. My wife & toddler loved it. We hiked at the local parks & came back to a wonderful & peaceful setting.
Very nice and relaxing. Great quiet place to get some alone time. To connect with someone special.
We stayed at the cabin this summer. It was very nice. I wish we could have stayed longer. We left there peaceful and refreshed due to the wonderful nature surrounding the area. If you like peace and quiet this is a great place for you to stay. The owners are very nice and friendly also. You can cook your own food if you bring it along which is nice. Didn't see too many stores to pick up groceries so be prepared. We look forward to going back!
Home away From Home
A place of solitude & nature. We traveled w/a family of 4. We considered it cabin camping...enjoying the outdoor world while retreating to an a/c cabin. We love thisplace. It's a retreat from the ins & outs of a hectic, hustle & bustle, always-on-the go lifestyle. It's tranquil, lots of trees, wooded surroundings & a peaceful atmosphere w/no cable tv (though a tv w/dvd & vcr) *no internet & limited mobile service (no available phone in cabin). The cabin, itself, once you enter, feels like home, with central a/c, fully-furnished room, kitchen, bathroom, & jacuzzi (in the Shadey Oaks cabin we were in). The bed was comfy & recliner was nice to kick your feet up & relax. There was also a sofa sleeper. The sheets and throws were baby soft. We loved the color motif of the cabin (earth-tone colors). It was an immaculate place to stay. The privacy was superb w/cabins far enough from one another. We stayed here for almost a week and experience no loud noise of any type. There was a bonfire pit available but due to the drought in June and July, we were unable to do any wood-burning for safety reasons---that was just fine! The management was accommodating & friendly. They had a roomful of videos accessible to visitors. The nearest mart was approximately 15-20 minutes. There was hiking onsite where we were able to view the Vermilion River & do some sight-seeing of the area. During the night, it was pitch black with a porch light available in every cabin. There were two entrances into the cabin and many windows to view the beautiful scenery. All in all, our vacation to Kishauwau was well worth our time & $$$.
We enjoyed the cabin. it was great to be able to have our dog with us. Our only problem was that we were not aware that there was no TV connection and we were eager to see the Olympics!
The area with all the cabins is very lovely and I think would be so enjoyable in the fall !
Great Home away From Home
We spent five nights at this excellent cabin located by Starved Rock state park. We enjoyed the cabin itself and the very friendly owners. The kids loved playing with the owner's dog, Cookie. Everything was spotless and in great order. We have already highly reccomended Kishauwau to several friends.

Comfortable, relaxing, very enjoyable.
Greeted warmly and made to feel right at home.
Our cabin was neat and clean and nicely furnished.
The location was easy to get to from Chicago and in pleasant surroundings.
Our time spent with 11 and 12 year old granddaughters at the cabin and nearby Starved Rock was something we all agreed to do again. The whole environment offered perfect bonding time together.
Elk Grove Village, IL
A wonderful get away.
This is our second year at Kishauwau, and it was another wonderful experience. The cabins are cozy and the property is beautiful. This year we took advantage of the fishing at the property. It was a great way to spend our day. Our kids love to check out the pond.
When I wasn't ready to go home yet, Teresa was wonderful about finding a cabin for us despite the multiple check-ins she was getting already.
We will be back again and again.
Clean, comfortable and relaxing!
Our stay was very enjoyable. The moment we arrived at our cabin, I realized that it was above and beyond our expectations! The modern appliances and air conditioning took away any sense of being in a "cabin", although the decor lent itself to a "North Woods" feeling. The front porch with the swing overlooking the meadow was the perfect place to enjoy our morning coffee. I would/and will recommend this place to anyone! The owners were more than accomodating, making sure that all our needs were attended to. A wonderful get away!
Nice Clean Place to Stay
My wife and I enjoyed our time here. We stayed one night and Utica is not to far away...about 8 miles. The cabin was clean and cozy. We would consider staying again. Only thing we wished it had was access to a lake or river. That would have made it perfect.
River Grove IL
Comfortable and affordable!
I stayed in the cabin for only one night with my daughter and her 2 sons. Also they brought their dog! It was a great way to stay connected and have fun! The cabin was immaculately clean and comfortable. The grounds were beautiful! I wish we could have stayed longer and I will definitely be back and recommend this location to others!

Loved the ambiance of the Cabin and the location. Great place to connect with yourself, your loved one and your God. We are excited to come back in a different season.
country side cabins
We had a very quiet time, everything was very clean and staff was very helpfull, thank you again.
We missed the internet and TV cable but lived with out it for couple days not the end of the world.
Soulful Recuperation with our Puppy
We celebrated our 5th anniversary at Kishauwau. We had a splendid time in our beautifully appointed cabin, and we really enjoyed the peace and solitude, away from the media distractions that we are constantly barraged with, living in the city. Our puppy just loved the location and when we packed to go home, he looked at us as if it was crazy we were leaving.
This is Susan Novak..we stayed at your cabin on July 3, and unfortunately I left my makeup bag there. Please keep it fopr me and I will be sending the box for you to mail it back to me. Just wanted to be sure that you kept it!! Thanks, Susan
Second verse- same as the first
This was our second stay @ Kishauwau. This truly is a restful place to stay. We enjoyed the clean cabin, trails, privacy and super-friendly staff. If you're looking a place to unplug and be off the grid, this is it. I promise you won't miss your cell phone!
Had a great time
Stayed at the Pines again, thank-you for granting our request for this cabin. Love the way the way you moved the firepit to the privacy of the back. Although we could not enjoy a fire due to drought restrictions, I know it will be great next time. We spent our time checking out the surrounding areas and enjoying local cuisine then back to our cool and comfortable cabin. See you next time.
Ann Arbor, MI
We could not get in any of the local hotels in the area but glad we didn't. This cabin was very clean and extremely peaceful. If you are looking for a place to get away and relax this is the place. The only downfall for us was there was no TV. Would recommend to all family and friends. Looks like it would be a great place for kids also.
relaxing. great for family time
Cabins were clean, were well organized. The location is peacefull and close to many great parks. We loved the privacy and our sons had a great time with Cookie and especially the movie collection.
Cozy and relaxing!
We had a great time relaxing in our cozy cabin. Fresh air, birds chirping, wonderful food on the grill. Our hosts were very accommodating and so friendly. Thanks!
It was just what we needed.
The cabin was just the right mix of rustic and comfortable (with even some luxury).

We stayed at your place the weekend of June 29-July 1, 2012, and all we can say is wow!! We found your place on the internet while looking for a quiet place for us to "run away" to for a much-needed retreat from the world and boy oh boy did we find it at Kishauwau!!! We stayed in Chippewa cabin and again all we can say is wow!! Thank you for your hospitality and for sharing the beauty and quiet comfort of your wonderful place with us. One of our favorite parts of our stay - no cell phone reception!! We were completely cut-off from our world and it was great!
the tranqility and quiet describes our stay.
This was our 5th year at Kishauwau and again it was great. The cabins are always clean. The service was great.
The facility is very nicely decorated, clean and neat.
Exactly what we came for...
We've stayed at Kishauwau one time previously. This isn't for a party crowd, it's for quiet... and lots of it! Beautiful, beautiful place, well-maintained.

Above our expectations
This resort/cabin town was the most quaint place I have been in a very long time. Not only were the grounds serene and calming, the cabin itself was clean and adorable. We enjoyed everything in the cabin including the outdoor space with the swing on the porch and the fire pit. This was the perfect location to get away and turn off the cell phones! The grounds were beautiful. We hiked on the property and went down to the pond. This location is close to starved rock and to many attractions. The owners were extremely friendly and accomodating.
We will definately be coming back and recommending these cabins.

Our stay at Kishauwau on the Vermilion was very peaceful.
My wife and I live in a busy, sometimes noisy suburb near Chicago. We were looking for a quiet respite from the all too familiar, and we found it here at Kishauwau on the Vermilion. We were able to cook out back of our cabin on a grill surrounded by beautiful old trees.
The cabin included the amenities of central air and a whirlpool. The cabin was spacious and clean with a kitchen that included utensils and dishware. There was also a TV and DVD player. The management was very courteous and gracious. We were very pleased with our getaway experience and will be back again! Thanks!

Great cabin and location for the price. The staff was very helpful and made suggestions for local eateries. I would recommend Ron's Cajun Connection and Lil Bella's Pizza. We went canoeing on the Vermilion River (canoethevermilion.com), hiking at Starved Rock and Zip Lining at Zip Chicago in Marseilles. Our cabin was Pines and it was so peaceful and quiet, especially at night. We enjoyed the whirlpool tub while listening to a local station 106.1.
The cabin was perfect. Love the environment. Love that we were able to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Peaceful and lovely
The grounds are stunning and our cabin was tidy and cool. The whirlpool tub was fun :) The bed was so comfy , I had the best nights sleep in a long time! The staff we very friendly and helpful. We brought our 3 teenagers with and they really liked the wild life and selections of dvds.

One of the Most Peaceful and Serene Vacations We've Had
We found the cabin to be wonderful with all the comforts of home plus a fantastic whirlpool tub all to ourselves. We usually stay at Starved Rock Lodge; however, we have now found our new favorite. Food tastes so much better cooked over a firepit and/or grill. It was so quiet and peaceful that we truly were able to "de-stress" and are already planning when we can return. We highly recommend this for those that want to live without cable t.v. and phone for awhile. The owners and their dog, "Cookie" are very gracious hosts.
It was full of peace and Serentity
I had a good time walking the trail with my dog Taylor and lovely wife Jenny and enjoying a campfire at night. I love the fact there is a place to stay with our dog and it is close to Starv rock
If escaping to quiet wooded views of green ravines, listening to and watching birds and walking along the Vermillion River is your need, this is the place. We love the short drive from Chicago and the far distance from our urban life. The cabins are simply furnished (nothing fancy); the hosts gracious and helpful. A terrific find!
The whole place was amazing. It was such a quite, relaxing atmosphere. The perfect place for a romantic getaway. The cabin was spacious and the whirlpool tub was a great place to relax after a day of hiking. It was so nice to have a place to prepare meals of the provided grill and to have a fire pit ready to go. The service was great - and it still felt very private. We definitely want to come back. We loved the open-door policy on the office that we could come up anytime to rent a movie, book or game. Overall just a great place to unwind!
Terrific People, Property, Accomodations and Location = Value
This is a genuine feel good place. The staff is friendly and service oriented. The property is beautiful and well maintained. Accomodations are modern, clean and comfortable with just the right amount of rustic feel. Loved the front porch with the swing, the firepit, the BBQ grill, the whirlpool, well equipped kitchen, being off the grid and the limitless free Dvds. The location is hard to beat with a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities close by.
La Grange Park, IL
Great place to stay
My husband and I, along with our two chihuahuas, stayed here for an extended weekend and family reunion. The cabins are great, and they're spaced far enough apart that you have your own privacy. Very nice! The staff was very friendly, and it was helpful to find a list of what to bring from home on the website.
Terre Haute, in
Clean room. Clean bathroom and clear water. Utensils and cooking all available. Good service. Nice neat landscape.
Lotta fun. Will go there again if in that area.
Great little getaway!
The cabin had everything we needed! We will definitely be back very soon! Everyone was so nice and the town is so cute!
I love staying at th Pines..so relaxing...swinging on the swing...reading...eating outside...and I like that the Parks are nearby for hiking, etc...
I have a very hectic job/life, so coming here helps me to "unplug" and enjoy a different pace of life, I also love the farmland and open spaces...I have been coming here for about 4 years now...it's a great place.

The Perfect Getaway Place
We stayed in the Chippewa cabin which had a beautiful wooded view from the back of the cabin. We were truly impressed by how clean and cozy the cabin was with so many extras included. It far exceded our expectations. We completely enjoyed the privacy of the back patio with the porch swing, the grill and the fire pit. We grilled out a few times and had a fire one night. We ate all of our meals at the picnic table behind the cabin and watched a raccoon family that lives in a tree across the creek. It was very quiet and peaceful. The owners were very attentive and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.

Home away from Home
I hoenstly could not have asked for a better place to stay. Me and My boyfriend needed to get away and love the starved rock area. We have stayed at starved rock in thier cabins twice and really enjoyed it, but were looking for something different. Kishauwau was everything the website and good reviews said it would be and more! We were going to Funyak down the Vermillion as we had the summer before but the water was two low. I was scrambling to find somthing else to do for that day and booked a canoe trip. We loved the cabin, the views, the area, and cookie <3 sooo much that we just stayed there instead of canoeing. I cant say enough good things about this place, I grew up travling and my parents always made sure we stayed at the best of the best places... It was awesome to be able to tell them that Kishauwau is a must next time they want a cabin with all the amenities. I hate to say it because Starved rock cabins have always treated us well, but Kishauwau was way nicer / friendlyer/ and relaxing. This is the place for romantic getaways, family gathers, kids(cookie the dogs stole my heart and from the journal entrys kids love her.), or just freinds looking to relax.
enjoyable and relaxing
Was excellant couldn't have asked for a nicer staff and great accomindations thanx and look forward to seeing u soon

A lovely experience in country setting!
the staff made us feel very welcome and at ease. the lodging was more than adaquet and very comfotable.everything we could have wanted was included.. even a cork screw for wine!!!All in all avery pleasant experience and one that we will more than likely repeat!
New Holland IL
Secluded, surprisingly large, exceptionally clean cabin with all the amenities except hot water...)-: The whirlpool in the cabin was the main attraction to me but sadly we waited until the morning of check-out to fill it and discovered only luke-warm water at best. However, a call to the owner brought a quick response and access to another cabin for at least a hot shower before check-out. Despite water heater problems I would definitely recommend this place. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, cabins well-spaced apart complete with porch swings. A very relaxing and peaceful place.
My dad came to your cabins a few years back and decide to purchase a get away weekend package for me and my husband. I had been to Utica a few times with the children but little did I know just a few miles further was this heavenly oasis! I love the country and your place all though it's not far from the city gave us this peaceful country feeling. The staff was so hospitable but didn't harass you. You felt like you were there alone but safe. The cabins were done so cozy and the option to stay in and cook or grill was great. It's a great place to relax. A great spot to spend with family, friends or even alone. I will be back!
Random Lake, WI
What a great getaway!
We were just going to rent a hotel for our weekend visit to Starved Rock Park but boy are we glad we found Kishauwau on the Vermilion cabin rentals as it really was a totally different experience than a hotel. I can't say enough about the place. They made you feel at home and the cabins and grounds were beautiful! We will be back!
Fun for kids.
The cabin was nice and clean. The owners were very helpful. Our kids really enjoyed the nice grassy area next to the office with the swings, and the frogy pond.
I could go on and on for pages but I'll sum it up instead: comfortable, convenient and clean cabins, fantastic environment, friendly staff...
The perfect place for a getaway.
K & H
The cabin we stayed at was very cozy. Had all the amenities that a home normally has. The location of the entire complex is great and very quiet as well. When we were there the weather was very warm and sunny so it made it that much better. Late night bonfire and the sounds of the nearby forest made it to be a very relaxing stay. My girlfriend and I are sure to return in the future. Highly recommend if you want to take a quick gateway from the everyday rat race.
quiet and cozy
The cabin was great, it met and exceeded all are expectations. We had a great time an are looking forward to a return trip, and I think are dog enjoyed the cabin and grounds more than we did. I think its awesome that they allow dogs, not many places allow dogs, that's a huge bonus. The cabin was the perfect size, very clean, nice bathroom, just awesome.
Beautiful and peaceful stay
The view from the americana cabin was perfect. The bed was extremely comfortable and the cabin was clean. It was great to have movies available to watch and access to water, wood and extras. The grounds were very well kept, and it was very quiet only the sounds of nature. It was great to have our own fire pit and grill. It would be nice to have access to TV, but not necessary if it would significantly increase the price to stay. We truly enjoyed our stay and will go back again.
We enjoyed our stay!
This was our second visit to Kishauwau on the Vermillion and we had a wonderful time. It was a very relaxing weekend. The cabin is cozy and we loved the hot tub. Also enjoyed sitting outside around the fire. We will definitely return.

Romantic trip for 2
My boyfriend and I decided to try this place out to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. We had a great time. It was so quite and peaceful. The staff were nice and the cabin was clean and ready for us when we got there. The grounds were clean and well kept. This is an absolutely beautiful place to go stay at. The prices are reasonable. We plan to go back there as soon as possible. The only complaint we had was that we could not take more time off work to stay longer. It was really hard to leave and go back to our everyday life.
The most Romantic Place ive ever stayed.
We went here for a getaway from the everyday stresses. Was very peaceful. Its set away from the busy roads. Was so wonderful waking up listening to the birds. Very romantic.
Great outdoor fun with all the comforts of home!
We enjoyed every minute of our stay! The cabin was clean, quiet & had everything we needed. We highly recommend & we'll absolutely come back!
Kish Cabins at Starved Rock
Fabulous cabins with just the right amountof space to be romantic but not too small. I loved the management and the land. It was one of my favorite weekends ever.
Nice, relaxing weekend
Each time we visit there gets a little better because we are better prepared for the experience. Great getaway!

Outstanding relaxation and great hosts!
All services were extremely friendly and prompt. I felt like I knew the owners a long time, even though this was our first visit! The home was great for us and our 2 lab mixes. The location was relaxing and breathtaking. My wife and I are already planning our next return. Who knew that such a wonderful place existed so close to Starve Rock!!! I really liked the location and the smell of the outdoor firepit. What really caught me by surprise was how friendly our hosts treated us!! We recommend Kishauwau on the Vermilion as one of the best vacation spots.
It was a great! very clean, very relaxing! i would definately go back again

Enjoyed the cabins and the grounds . We had a very nice time . Wish we could of stayed longer . We will be back .
Thank you all very much .
It was very fun, relaxing, and nice hiking trails.
We came for a weekend retreat and really enjoyed our stay.
We found the cabin private and very comfortable!
Thanks for a nice stay.
Romance - Quiet - Nature --- At its best
We book a weekend every year for our anniversary at Kishauwau. I am already counting down the time until our next visit. From our first visit here many years ago we have felt like part of the Kishauwau family.
3 years and running of great vacations with Kishauwau!
My wife and I rent a small whirlpool cabin every Feb for 2 nights. The cabin is always clean, well kitted out and has a relaxing air. The video library is well stocked for when you just need to sit in front of the fire and chill out. The firewood for the stove is well seasoned and lights easily. This might seem trivial, but 20 minutes trying to start a fire can really detract from the mood. The staff is friendly, and the rules set aside (so you don't wreck the place) are reasonable and straight forward.
Peaceful and totally relaxing
What a great, relaxing getaway.
Very private and peaceful.
The very large jacuzzi tub was great.
There was a great variety of dvds and videos also.
Will definately be back.
old and tired
Very quiet and relaxing. If that is what you are looking for this is your place, not much else. A little overpriced.
Extremely clean and comfortable with very friendly, out-going staff, Kishauwau is close enough to the city to get away quickly but the atmosphere and surroundings make you feel like you are in a whole different world! A wonderful pace to stay, this was the fourth trip for us and we will be returning many times in the future. Whether its just for an overnight getaway or a week's vacation there are so many things to see and do in the area that you will go home wishing that you had more time. Always looking forward to and planning my next visit!!
We had a wonderful stay at Kishauwau. The area was very quiet and relaxing. The cabin was clean and well taken care of. All the people we met were nice and accommodating. It was great being able to bring our dog and the proximity to the state parks was perfect: easy to get to, but far enough away to still be peaceful. The area is beautiful and we really had a good time. Already recommended the cabins to several friends.

All that we wanted and more.
Wish we could have stayed longer. Quite and peacful. A great place to unwind, and just relax.
Staff was friendly and helpful. The location was only minutes from Utica and Starved Rock.
The rolled up newspaper included with our firewood just did not work, but with all of the trees, there is plenty of kindling readily available.
We had a wonderful time and hope to return soon.
Oak Park IL
Quiet, serene, lovely!
Gret location near stste parks. Close to good food, hiking, and beautiful views. The cabin had everything we needed. Truly appreciated the hospitality of our hosts!
Great place and friendly staff!
Enjoyed everything about our stay. We already plan on returning in the summer.
Welcoming and Relaxing
This was a wonderful place to get away and enjoy some quality time with my fiance. Terisa and Jamie are very welcoming and accomodating. The weather did not cooperate with us, but we still enjoyed the cabin and quiet time. We look forward to going again next year...this time with the kids.
Sleepy Hollow, Illinois
The Chippewa Cabin
Sooo relaxing and simplistic. It is amazing how much stress was "extracted" in the short stay at The Chippewa, and disapated into the fresh woodsy air. I have no need to ever stay anywhere else when visiting the Starved Rock area. It was like being at home, cooking, lounging, and listening to a small fire crackling while sipping on a glass of wine.
Stay at the Zonta Cabin
My wife and I have stayed at Kishawau at least 4 times. Never have we been disappointed, until it was time to leave. Just love the place! Plus, we can bring our dog, Max. Not many places allow that!
Nice, but odd
The room is very nice, everything described, and reasonably priced. What was odd was not requiring us to clean dishes (there is no automatic dishwasher) but expecting dishes to be put away. Also odd was expecting us to bring cabin garbage up to the office. Indicates to us that the dishes are not checked, inspected, or cleaned from guest to guest - beware from a hygiene stand point. Garbage clean out indicates that cabin cleaning after our departure may be suspect as well.
New lenox, Illinois
relaxing at Kishauwau
We have been going to Kishauwau for 12-14 years now. It has always proven to be an amazing weekend. Relaxation and peaceful time is what we get every time we go. The cabins are clean and well kept - the owners are all very nice and friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone who asks me. I look forward to our next stay - we try to book upon checkout so we have something to look forward to.
"A Little Bit of Heaven on Earth"
Okay, first picture Monet then Kincade, mix a bit of Redlin then complete that with a little bit of heaven and a little bit of earth - that's it! Service was the best - just right! The homestead - a perfect blend of serenity, seclusion and sweetness. Location- a hop, skip and jump from our house - 1 hour and the amenities perfect for why you're there! Stayed in the americana - first time at Kishauwau - celebrated my 50th with my husband - it was exactly what I needed - absolutely perfect. Clean, clean, clean! Simple and elegant. I don't know what else to say - you can read my comments in the journal - it's exactly that! All I can say is you will not be dissappointed! The honor system made us feel that trust is still alive!

Everything was absolutely wonderful. Our stay was short but oh so peaceful. I could have stayed a week (maybe next time). We came into town to see family for Easter and when we left, we all talked about coming back soon and renting Grandma's cabin. Thanks for everything, we'll be back!
We Loved It!
Quiet, Comfortable and Relaxing! Thank you! Our dog loved it too! We will be back.

It was so beautiful and peaceful!!! The room and service was so nice... I will definitely be back... I recommend everyone to stay there at lease once...
The people were soo very nice and the cabins were beautiful. Me and my friends had a blast. We went in March. I bet the place is even more amazing during the spring months.
A much needed night away.
We have not one complaint about our experience. The office staff was wonderful, they took the time to show us other cabins before we checked out, Great customer relations! And the fact that it was located so wonderfully in the countrty, away from busy life was the most peaceful way to spend a quiet evening.
Relaxing Romantic Getaway
We loved our time at Kishauwau on the Vermillion. The cabin was clean, spacious and exactly as it was pictured on their website. It was very peaceful and relaxing. My husband and I loved the whirlpool tub. It was huge! The employees/owners were friendly and accommodating. We have already recommended this cabin to our friends, family and co-workers and we would recommend it to anyone else who is looking for a relaxing weekend away.

relaxation in a beautiful area and comfortable cabin
We were very happy with our stay at Hunters Cabin this past weekend! I honestly wish we were still there :)
The view in the back was amazing and the fireplace made it very cozy. I already told some of my friends about how great the stay was and gave them a brochure. We can't wait to get back in the warmer months. I bet the fall is amazing out there by you guys. I really thought is was refreshing how you kept the office open at all times and have that trust factor. We don't see that much anymore. We picked some great movies that you were generous enough to lend us! The one thing that was a little frustrating was the bath didn't have that hot of water the first day but we know there is really no control over that. We let it sit for a while and finally the hot water came back in! Otherwise, no other complaints! The bed/pillows were so comfortable and it was nice how you had towels plus all the kitchen supplies we needed! Thanks again. We will see you soon enough!

Only thing - you could have is local channels on TV
Quiet, Open Space
It was great to get away for a weekend and have the time and space to walk, reflect and pray.
They have outdone themselves again
Once again my wife and I had wonderful weekend at Kishauwau. The woodburner and the hot tub being the focal points. For a complete getaway this is it. When we ran out of fire wood I called the number at the check in cabin and it was delivered within 10 minutes. The two beautiful State Parks that are just a stones throw away are perfect for daily hikes to kick up an appetite. In town Uttica you can find a couple of nice places to eat my favorites are Duffys(the reuben is delicious)and Canal Port (great bar burger). Sunday morning breakfast of bacon and eggs in the cabin was the perfect way to end our weekend. It's nice to have everything you need right there at your finger tips.
Relaxing Weekend Getaway
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay at Kishauwau! The cabin was clean, cozy and quiet. It had a big whirlpool bath and a warm woodstove that helped make for a perfect winter getaway. The location is great. We enjoyed hiking in nearby Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks, wine tasting in nearby Utica and relaxing with a movie back at the cabin. The folks at the office are very friendly and they offer a wide selection of movies you can borrow during your stay. We look forward to staying again.

Exactly what we hoped for.
The accommodations were excellent and exactly as promised. The peace and quiet were wonderful. We were warmly greeted upon arrival, firewood was promptly delivered and the cabin was spotless and ready for our arrival.

A great restful place!
We stayed in the Wildnerness Cabin and it was very nice. We both wished the weather had been a little warmer to enjoy the swing on the back porch. Having the firewood delivered was unexpected and the movie selection was excellent. Thank you for helping us have a quiet, relaxing night.

The perfect getaway!
From the moment we checked in we were impressed with Kishauwau. The owners couldn't have been more friendly and accomodating. We stayed in the Pines cabin and it was everything we had anticipated! It was peaceful, relaxing and just what we were wanting in a weekend getaway. No cell phones, no tv, no work etc.. made for an This was our first time at Kishauwau and definitley won't be our last!
Very nice clean cabins
The cabins are very nice, clean and private. They are spaced far enough apart to give you plenty of privacy. The hosts were very friendly and informative.
Our experience was relaxing, refreshing, secluded and a time of
The service was casual which was exactly what we expected along with fresh heart-shaped brownies for our Valentine getaway. The obvious trusting by the owners was an absolute wonderful surprise. Mounds of movies, books, magazines and other kick your feet up and relax items made the stay enjoyable ...On the down side, the carpeting was really worn and the fridge door swung the wrong way (husband's pet peeve)...but that's it. We loved it and will return. The extra squishy quilt and I became the best of friends...aaahhh...let's do it again.
The owner (Teresa) was very friendly and accommodating. We found the cabin to be perfect for us, in a quiet, out of the way place, near lots of fun tourist things like the wine tasting rooms in Utica. Just had a romantic evening by the fire!
Wonderful Relaxing Weekend
Love our stay at Kishauwau! Friendly people, beautiful scenery, amazing accommodations! Great place to relax or go for an adventure. Loved the books and movies you can borrow from the main cabin. Beds were so comfortable...would love to have the sheets! Very neat journals in every cabin telling stories of other visitors. Cute idea! Can't wait to stay again!
Enjoyable Time away
We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and in a few minutes found ourselves getting situated in our cabin. It was very roomy & clean & very nice. We knew right away we had made a good choice & that our friends that recommended the place were right. Later I built a nice fire in the wood burning stove & we just sat by the fire, read, and relaxed.
Quiet and relaxing retreat
It was very relaxing sitting in front of the wood stove. I am planning another trip soon. I was able to bring my dogs with. Owners very nice , access to movies 24 hours a day. Fire wood delivered to my door.
Jacussi tub is awesome to relax in anytime, especially after sking and hiking at the parks! Super clean! Totally relaxing! Sooo...comfortable! You will never want to leave!!! Amazing this little piece of heaven is just a short drive from Chicago. I love staying here and totally recommend you stay, too!

A weekend of peace and refreshment
After a ten year absence, we returned to Kishauwau for a weekend dedicated to relaxation and the viewing of bald eagles at nearby Starved Rock State Park. Kishauwau retains the same magical flavor it had a decade ago--a sense of complete peace and refreshment, and a very comfortable cabin with excellent kitchen facilities and a great wood-burning stove. There are few distractions, and the sense of being truly at the edge of nature in the wild is overwhelming. Don't go if you need the constant presence of TV, the Internet, and cell phones, but if you crave solitude, reading good books, and watching Dvd's from Kishawau's enormous selection, this is the place!
Last minute accomadations...
I called at the last minute for a reservation and they were able to meet my needs. The cabin was clean and comfortable. I would recommend the resort.

Sit Back, relax, unwind and listen...to nothing but the sound of
Kishauwau on the Vermmilion is a wonderful resort. The hospitality is exceptional! Offering clean comfortable, fully equiped cabins nestled on the Vermilion river. To us it is a hidden treasure in the flatlands of Illinois.A great place to go to get away unwind and relax. Doesn't matter what season you visit there is plenty to do in the surrounding area-Starved Rock for the hiker in you or onsite you can hike down to the river and catch a glimpse of the Eagles. Great food is close by in the town of Utica. I have definately recommended this as a place to visit.
Warm, Rustic, and romantic!
Had a great time. I really need time to relax and enjoy my time away from home. It was nice and romantic. Everything was very clean and also well equipped.
Romancing the Stone
It was a peaceful, restful, romantic stay and we will be back !!!
When we pulled up I knew I'd finally found our getaway place for my husband and I. You will never find this in a 5 star hotel. The owners were very welcoming. We loved the open trust policy in the office for buying small items and use of movies and books. Already I knew it was a perfect. Then the cabin and whirlpool tub for two, everything was clean and working. I have to come back in the Spring!!
Love Nest on the Beautiful Vermillion River
The best rental near Starved Rock. Want to have some private time with your significant other in a beautiful surrounding?, then stay here.
Peace & Quiet
We have been coming to Kishauwau for many years, the first time back when Ben & Ellen were the owners. We have never been disappointed ; always finding the restoration and quiet that our souls need. The cabins are clean, private, and well-maintained. We have stayed in a different cabin every time & found another one we would like to try the next time we come! Each season of the year offers its own amenities provided by the beautiful, spacious grounds and wooded area. The owners are very accomodating, helpful and friendly yet respectful your privacy. We are starting to tell our friends and family that we are going to'our place in the woods'. Highly recommended if you need to unplug and unwind.
Peaceful Romantic getaway with time split between hot tub and hi
Fully ready kitchen so bring some food to stay in and cook and just enjoy the quiet of the cabins. Although there are about 15 cabins on the property, you still feel like you are alone and peaceful.
The location is just a few miles south of some nice and easy day hikes and the small town of Utica which has some nice antique stores, a great little pottery shop and an amazing steak house.
This was my second time staying here and I am looking forward to going back yet again.
We orginally choose this location because it was dog friendly, we keep going back because it is so much more...
Wonderful Winter Getaway
Cabin was clean, lovely and quiet.
Big Whirlpool Bath and the warm woodstove made for a perfect stay.

We had a wonderful time!
We stayed here with our two dogs while visiting family for Christmas. The cabin was perfect and we look forward to returning next year.

Had a great time
We loved our time in our cabin. Our favorite amenities were the outdoor fire pit, grill, and the full kitchen so we were able to do lots of cooking and grilling. The cabin was wonderfully quaint, and the dvd library and game selection at the office was terrific. Liked least was the hot-tub- there was a bug in it, so we were fearful of going in it that other bugs may have been in the pipes of the jets... but otherwise we really enjoyed the cabin.
It was a great place to spend New Year's Eve.
Would like to stay again when the weather would permit hiking and other outdoor activities.

Very relaxing private get away
Found that it was very relaxing. Was a great way to get away from it all but close enough to go to town or to one of the state parks. we went to starved rock and hiked around for 2 hours and saw a couple of eagles on December 31st. weather was a little unusual for this time of year. enjoyed the wood stove in our cabin and the whirlpool too. watched a couple of movies and cooked breakfast.
Very relaxing and private.
Enjoyed our stay. We used the kitchen to cook our meals and the whirlpool was great. No one was in the office when we arrived to check in or left to check out. Had to use the phone both times to get instructions on what to do. Interior of cabins are a little dated, but it was very relaxing and a nice getaway for a couple.
This quick winter getaway was peaceful, quiet, relaxing and enjo
Neat...clean...accomodating...and what a wonderful experience we had. We hiked Buffalo Rock and Matthiessen state parks, visited the locks on the Illinois River, and tasted at the winery in Utica. We had a great time and were able to bring our dog. Kishauwau was wonderful, and we plan on returning in the summer.

This place is peaceful, private and near areas that make you fee
Really enjoyed our stay. Wished we would have booked an extra night. Our cabin was very clean and I loved the full kitchen. The layout is great...it's like a huge studio. I loved that the cabins are far enough apart that you have privacy and don't hear other people's business. We hiked as many trails as we could in two days. The area is breathtaking (for IL). The people who run this place were so nice and friendly. The only thing it needed was some sort of pillow top on the mattress. Felt every spring in that thing! Can't wait to come back again.

Blissfully Peaceful as always
We have been coming here about once a year for the past 15 years. This place is awesome, we loved being "unplugged" from the hectic lives filled with electronic communication. No telephone, no Wi-fi, no Cable TV, and no cell phone signal unless we go for a walk up to the road - we absolutely love it! Staff, as always, made us feel at home and part of the family. In 15 years we've never had a single negative experience - there is nothing we can say about Kishauwau except positive things. We're planning our next trip already. We stayed in one of the dog friendly cabins. Sadie, our Shitzu, has always been welcome at Kishauwau and this is another reason we come here - dogs are accepted. Our only regret is that we cannot come here more often. No - our only regret is that we don't live there permanently.
My daughter and I had a great time staying in Hunter's cabin. It was so relaxing, the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a wide selection of Dvds to choose from and no rental fees! The "honor system" brings me back to a simpler time in life. We will be back and I highly recommend this facility!
Beautiful n Relaxing
After all the rushing and hustling of the holidays and all that 2011 set on our laps we really needed and enjoyed the peacefullness of our still we will be celebrating our 25th in October and we will Be returning!!!
Kishauwau is serene, private and always welcoming.
we have been coming to Kishauwau for 6 years and have come during the summer for rafting, the spring for hiking and the winter for cross-country skiing. I can't wait to try them in the fall. We love the family that cares greatly for the little piece of heaven they share with ther guests.
Peaceful and relaxing
We have been returning to Kishauwau for over 15 years. This is the ultimate retreat for us between Christmas and New Years. We enjoy the simplicity, beauty, and hospitality that the Kishauwau experience entails. We enjoy the ability to have a pet friendly cabin, the wood burning stove, the free DVD/Video library to use at our convenience, a whirlpool tub, friendly and helpful staff to help meet needs and make recommendations of places to visit or eat, etc. I would highly recommend a visit to the cabins and area.

A memory that will last forever!
My husband and I stayed a weekend for our wedding anniversary in Dec. It was a beautiful weekend where we had a dusting of snow on Saturday. We were warm and cozy in our cabin, huddled around our woodburning stove. My husband was a boyscout and attended the camp as a youth. My brother was also a camp counselor at this camp and he introduced Dale and I. My brother is gone now and it was nice to walk the grounds and listen to Dale point out and tell stories! We loved the place so much that we gave a weekend gift certificate to our kids and grandkids to experience the peaceful surroundings themselves!
The Samia Family
This was just what my husband and I where looking for. We went for Christmas. The only complain was there was no snow! The place was spacious. We felt like we where the only ones there. Great location. Only 1 1/2 hours from Chicago which we look advantage of. The setting was so peaceful. The cabin had everything we needed for wonderful meals. Also we were able to take our dogs!
Thank you for a great Christmas!
Country Club Hills
It was very peaceful.
It was the most romantic experience I have had in my 44 years of living. The first night we cooked dinner and watched movies and we planned our next day adventures. The night ended with a long relaxing chill in the whirlpool. The next morning I made breakfast and we visited two nearby wineries. Very good experience, completed with dinner at annie's hide away, great food. I will definitely return soon.
We had a great experience.
Very good service and we had a great experience. The support staff was very helpful. I enjoyed the DVD selection. The place is very quiet and that is what we love most.
What a great weekend
We enjoyed our stay!! The cabin was clean and cozy, we are looking forward to our next visit!!
good time was had by all
once again we had a great time at Kishauwau. we enjoyed a fall weekend get away, the cabin was perfect and the place was quiet and peaceful. we are going to get a group together to rent Grandmas cabin for a weekend. We just love this place!!! I was here as a Boy Scout and love bringing my family back to enjoy this great place.
Another great stay!
Once again, a wonderful few days away from the 'noise' of daily life. Walking in the woods, enjoying the peace and quiet are things we truly needed, to recharge our energy. Since Kishauwau has kitchens in their cabins, we have the choice of bringing food and cooking it there, which really saves money, or going to restaurants in the area. Maybe next time, we'll have a fire in the wood stove or out in the fire pit. The area is truly stunning, being near Mathiassen and Starved Rock State Parks. We'll be back!
Cozy & peacful place to relax
We loved our stay in the cabin at Kishauwau. It was very clean and cozy. We loved using the wood stove. It was very pretty outside too. Woods out our back window. We plan to come back again & we recommend this place to our friends.
Very relaxing mini vacation!
Cabins are clean and cozy set in peaceful wooded surroundings. Business is family run so everything is very down to earth. Pet friendly option appealed to us.
Great Place. Cozy, confortable, 2-person hot tub. Hosts are great.
A quiet and restful weekend
The cabin was quiet, secluded, immaculately clean and tidy, and well provided in terms of amenities. Best of all, there's no cable TV, so the TV can only be used to watch movies (please don't ever put in cable!). The location is close to two beautiful state parks. It was a perfect getaway.
Diane - Camphiker
Once again, we had an awesome, refreshing stay at Kishauwau.
This time, we stayed at the Zonta. It was very cozy and as always very clean. One can tell that the owners and staff take pride in their cabins. Alot of thought goes into the set up of the cabins to make them extremely comfortable. We did not even go out to eat. There is such a nice kitchen area that we cooked our meals, so between the great smell of food inside and the great smell of pine and an awesome fire in the pit...we became very relaxed and wanted to stay much longer ! Too bad we all have to work ! The Zonta is also nice because of it's location on the grounds. Nice and quiet and private...and if you have someone who can't go outside to the fire pit for any reason...it is located in such a place that they can see it through the window. There are alot of windows for viewing everything all around you but you can close blinds for privacy too. I could just go on & on because I love Kishauwau so much. We have two more cabin stays planned already. One is just for a couple of us and the other is for a family reunion kind of thing. Can't wait ! Thanks to all at Kishauwau !!
Peace and quiet.
Ive been coming for 10 yrs now, and love the woods, the atmosphere, the small towns, Burggoo fest and the whirlpool tub. Thanks for being such great hosts. <3 ya all Bill Scheidt
Oh my word...Perfect!
A birthday present from my husband. Just me & him. Left our sweet lil boys at Grandmas. Went into Chicago on Sat. So got the best of both worlds...calm & serene to city life. It was just what we needed. Kishauwau is a perfect getaway. Very well kept place!
Best get away
It was very peaceful. My next visit will be longer than two days.
A Chicago Family
What a beautiful spot!
We had an amazing stay in the most well thought out accommodation! The cabin had everything! We had a beautiful room, hot-tub, grill, firepit, fireplace, kitchen, dog friendly, movies, snacks available and on beautiful grounds. We stayed here for a fall color weekend and hiked at Starved Rock State Park. What a lovely spot! We will be back! Thank you Kishauwau!
Great service made me feel welcome
Very nice cabin experience. Staff made me feel very welcome and well-cared for; service was very good.
Cabins were well equiped with plenty of cooking utensils and dishes, and kitchen was very clean and comfortable.
Cabins were fairly close together, but still felt basically private.
My only complaint is that I felt the price was a little high for the experience.
Kishauwau is an adorable, peaceful getaway. It's a short distance from the area's attractions (Starved Rock, Matthieson State Park, the river, etc.), but feels miles away from the crowds of Starved Rock!
The owners are wonderful and always available to answer questions and make sure you have what you need. The cottages are clean, fully stocked with extra towels, sheets, etc. and all the cooking supplies and could need.
We visited in late October and the fall colors were gorgeous. I'd highly recommend Kishauwau to anyone!
Easy first trip with my dog.
This was my first trip with my dog, Grace a 13 month old Shepherd. The resort was easy to find and the owners warm and friendly. Getting around the resort was easy too everything was in walking distance. The trip to town was a bit long since Peru is the closest big town, but getting to the Park was easy. I loved the whirlpool and the microwave made cooking easy. They had plenty of movies to keep me occupied at night. The bed was hard but I have a sleep number which is hard to compare to so every bed is hard. Our stay was short but the hiking trails were wonderful. Looking forward to staying longer next year, much more to explore.
Very relaxing and cozy spot!
This is a great place to go, and just relax. The caretakers are wonderful, and so friendly. The location is not far from Starved Rock, and we really enjoyed the hiking trails. Then we came back to our cozy cabin and just relaxed. This truly is a wonderful place.
Wonderful as usual, built a cozy fire morning and evenings, watched movies, walked in the woods. We'll be back for sure.
It was really nice and I was not disappointed, really a+++
Fox River Grove, Il
Even better than expected!
The pictures do not do this place justice! It was so clean and comfortable!
Great romantic getaway!
The hot tub was great after hiking at the nearby State Parks (Mattheison Dells=amazing), it is huge!
You have your own water heater, and can crank it up, we filled the tub 1/2 way, waited a bit and then filled it up.
We really enjoyed having our own kitchen & cooked out on the grill. So peaceful and quiet, the stars were unreal.
Bring your food, there is not a close by store! The butcher shop in Ottawa was fantastic & so is route 71 (highly recommended)
Theresa and her kids are very sweet & helpful, she even let me know when the cabin was ready for a early check in!
There is no tv reception, I thought that was awesome-part of the charm of a real get away! At their office there are tons of movies to borrow, maybe bring your own if you want to-or have something specific you want to watch. They also have smore kits you can purchase for the camp fires.
We loved that it was pet friendly, our dog had a great time hiking with us.
The trail on their property was wonderful, we even saw a eagle the first day. It was one of my favorite trails-very dog friendly!
Our neighbors on each side had dogs & they were very nice. It is very private, no one intrudes on you unless you feel like being socialble.
We were lucky enough to be able to extend our stay, but they are very busy, so book early & stay longer than you think you'd like to!!! You won't want to leave!
Crystal Lake Illinois
Beautiful place and dog friendly.
I loved the cabin, the location, and the setting. I also needed a place that was dog friendly (I traveled with my 2 dogs) and Kishauwau was perfect for all of this. I did feel that it was just a little pricey for the 10$ charge for each dog per night. However, my dogs are very well behaved and trained and I'm sure that is not always the case. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The cabin was wonderful and very comfortable. The setting and privacy was very nice. I will come back in the future and I have already recommended it to a friend.

It is very quiet and relaxing.
We have been going to these cabins for several years. They are wonderful, very relaxing and peaceful. We love the setting in the woods and the beautiful views. We already have our next trip booked and can't wait to go back. The place is absolutely spotless, and has everything you need to make a wonderful get away
Private and comfortable
The cabin was very nice and suited our needs perfectly. If you are wanting to get away from it all and enjoy a retreat with your spouse, I heartily recommend this cabin. They had a nice large whirlpool tub and a kitchen with the appropriate cutlery and utensils.
The only reason we gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because when we got there, the blinds on the entry door were jacked up and left a big hole that someone could look through. We jury-rigged some paper to cover it up. The staff was very friendly and responsive to our needs though.

great location with private setting
just wanted a quick getaway and this place was perfect! private enormous cabins with a full kitchen wood stove and huge whirlpool! bring some food and drinks and stay at the cabin! we definately will be going back!

We truly enjoyed our two day stay in the Whirlpool cabin. We appreciated the warm welcome and courtesy that was given to us upon our arrival by Terisa. The cabin was in excellent condition and the amenities were inviting and appreciated. We also are thankful for having the opportunity to enjoy our time with our three year old Irish Terrier, Keegan, who enjoyed the open space and country side. We did some great hiking in nearby Starve Rock.
The description and pictures on the Website are very accurate for this place! Nice, clean cabin with well equipped kitchen. We couldn't make it for one day of our reservation and they were nice enough to give us a break in the cost even though it was their busy time! The staff were very nice and the check-in was quick. Just what we were looking for!
Can't say enoug for a wonderful stay
Even though we could not stay in the cabin we preferred (no longer dog friendly) we enjoyed out stay. Great accomadations and friendly staff.
Our Yearly Retreat
We have been renting cabins (5 to 7 units) for over 15 years for a group of friends who who gather from all over the area. This annual event is always pleasureable and we our comforted knowing that we always have a clean, safe and warm place to spend a fall weekend by the campfire.
Glen Ellyn, IL
This place is great! My wife and I stayed here for a few days after our wedding to relax. When we arrived, the management staff was very pleasant and helpful and got us to our cabin very quickly. The cabins are all a fair distance away from each other so it was very private. The cabin itself was very cozy and exactly what we were hoping for. The wood-burning stove was great, and the big whirlpool tub was even better. It's only a 10 minute drive to Marseilles and another 5 to Starved Rock, so this was the perfect place to stay if you're looking for a relaxing get-away. Thank you Kishauwau.
Another great weekend!
My husband and I have been going to Kishauwau on the Vermilion cabins for 18 years now. We knew the original owners Ben & Ellen King, may they rest in peace. We introduced this place to several other friends and have now made it a yearly ritual to go as couples. We still enjoy the quiet setting, complete serenity, and total tranquility this place brings. You sleep so calmly without a care in the world. We hope to continue to enjoy many more years at our "little piece of heaven" this side of earth.
Tim and Carol Sullivan
The peace and quiet was so tranquil the only sound you could hear were the squirrels chasing each other up and down the trees and the rain drops falling on the leaves. It was breathtaking. We'll be back next year.
staff was very friendly and accommodating. no problems with any part of the experience, would like to go back!
Quiet and Dog-friendly
What a great place to stay that allowed me to come overnight to Starved Rock with my pet. Will definitely be back!
We had a very relaxing & wonderful stay at Kishauwau. We enjoyed the peaceful & beautiful property that our cabin was located on & the owner's we're so friendly & went out of their way to made us feel right at home. We definitely will be returning. We're also looking to hold our next family reunion there.
Warm, welcoming, relaxing!
The cabins at Kishauwau are the best! They are a wonderful retreat less than 2 hours outside downtown Chicago (with no traffic). This was our second stay and I can say we'll be back for many more. Jamie and Terisa King run a fantastic rustic resort where everyone is treated like family. The cabins are modern clean and cozy - less like cabins and more like fantastic little houses in the woods. There is so much to do at Starved Rock, the I&M; Canal Trail, Buffalo Rock, Matthiessen State Park, and cute little towns like Utica and Ottowa, you'll wish you had more time to explore and have fun! I wish we could keep it our own little secret but the Kings are such great hosts/owners that we had to share our experience.
My husband and I had a relaxing experience at Kishauwau on the Vermillion. Cabins were basic-but clean and comfortable. We stayed with our dog-which is a bonus-reason to come here for pet owners. We did think it was a little pricey for what we got-but did enjoy the experience.
Great quick getaway
I found myself with 2 kids and a dog on the most beautiful fall weather that I can remember ever and my husband out of the country. I needed to get the kids away from the TV and myself away from nagging the kids to turn off the TV. I looked up Starved Rock and found a pet friendly place and the Kishauwau turned out to be a very nice pleasant, friendly, clean stay with all the amenities of home except cable and computer! Perfect. We hiked, we ate, we lit a fire and enjoyed a full moon on the beautiful open lawn of the Kishauwau property. The dog was in heaven to have the kids attention and I loved the quick drive back and forth. We are coming back with my husband for sure.
My wife and I are first time Kishauwau travelers. You have to disconnect because there is no television or cell phone reception. We had Dt's for the first day without those modern devices but later turn into a great time. We burned 6 loads of wood in three nights and drank laughed and talked. The old time vacation turned into a great timebecause you will reconnect with your loved one or ones.
A great vacation!
All aspects of our experience with Kishauwau on the Vermillion was pleasant. The website, which I stumbled on, enticed us to give it a try. The pictures online were an accurate representation and all info was up to date and easy to understand. Booking the reservation by phone was easy & very friendly. Allowing dogs made this vacation possible for us. The cabin & furnishings were spotless and well maintained. The privacy stressed by management was always observed. Beautifully maintained grounds, in a rustic but, comfortable setting. Our only regret was not being able to stay longer. We would love to return and are telling our friends and family what a great place to get away.
Absolutely perfect destination close to home but felt far away
Had a great time at Kishauwa with my husband to celebrate my birthday. Very spacous cabins, comfortable and clean. Weather was perfect. Quiet and beautiful surroundings close to Starved Rock. Staff was very friendly. Loved the outdoor firepit. I only wish we could have stayed more than one day. We will definitely be going back, probably this winter.
Always a great experience
We've stayed at Kishauwau multiple times, and it's always wonderful. The owners are very nice, and the cabins are meticulously maintained and clean. We like the Starved Rock Lodge, but we love Kishauwau! We plan on continuing to visit for years to come.
Just what I needed. Clean, private, quiet, well appointed.
ExRvers and Dogs
Even with rain the entire day of our visit, we found our stay very relaxing. It was exactly what we exspected. We could tell our two miniature Schnauzers loved the place. We will return!
Great place to get away
My wife and I wanted to get away for a bit and do some hiking. Looking to hike at Starved Rock and Mathiessen State Park I found Kishauwau as a recommendation. We will be coming back to enjoy the facility and the surrounding hiking trails. The cabin we stayed in suited our needs perfectly. We enjoyed the jacuzzi tub after hiking to relax. Kishauwau is a great place to get away.
Beautiful Comforts of Home away from Home!
My husband and I were totally amazed at this emaculate cabin and country resort that we had the wonderful opportunity to rent for three nights. The owners put it upon themselves to make sure that we were comfortable. Our cabin was beautiful inside and out. It was sparkling clean with top of the line furnishings and accessories. We stayed in the americana Cabin; which had a very comfortable bed and lazy boy sofa and chair surrounded by many 'country accents'. We enjoyed the wood burning fireplace as we watched the multiple movies that we selected from their vast array of free VHS and DVD library.
We enjoyedthe porch swing outside out cabin as we looked out at the natural wonders surrounding us. Our cabin sat within hundreds of majestic oak trees as we marveled and listened as the 'acorn shower' filled the air as they fell from the trees one of those afternoons. The other cabins are located far enough away to give each camper this sense of privacy that is so treasured!
The modern kitchen had all the utensils and appliances we needed to prepare our meals everyday. Even though we only stayed there for three nights we felt like this was our home away from home. This was our first visit and it will not be our last! We are hoping to return again soon.
The owners were very helpful and friendly. They made us feel like family! This was a great get-away adventure that we are so thrilled to have discovered. We can't wait to return again and again!
They also showed us several of the other cabins. Each were decorated with beautiful patchwork quilts and top-of-the- line furnishings. From first glance we could see that the owners took great pride in constructing these cabins so that they would provide a sense of belonging to all who would have the opportunity to stay there for a spell. These are a 'treasure'!
Great place to relax away from it all.
It was a very nice place to stay, very quiet, away from the hussle and bussel of the crowds.Very clean and plenty of room inside and out. The only draw back was the TV,they have no TV service just a DVD/VCR for movies and no phone service. Why i gave it 4 star in one area only.Very nice owners run this place always asked if we needed anything and gave us plenty of places to stop and see in the area.Only 15 minutes off the interstate and 5 minutes to Starved Rock. Canal Street rest in town was nice and the Willow Bistro was nice.Would deffently go stay again.

Perfect weekend getaway
I wanted to celebrate my husband's birthday away from the city, and this was a fantastic choice! Although the weather didn't cooperate (it rained the entire time), we still attempted to use the fire-pit and make use of our porch swing. The cabin was lovely and comfortable, the wood-burning stove nicely warmed the entire area, and the whirlpool was a great way to relax.
The cabins are spaced far enough away that you still have your privacy, although unless you are adventuresome, there wasn't much to walk around in the forest area surrounding the cabins(I am pregnant, so couldn't navigate the very steep hills)
With a huge selection of dvd's & games that we could borrow from the main office, we were able to spend the rainy night without any problem (Roadhouse 2 is ridiculously awesome). My only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer, my husband loved his birthday getaway and we have plans to return again
We enjoyed our stay. We liked making fires in the pit outside - it was just the right weather for this. Great being close to state parks and local historic sites. Our cabin was cozy, appreciated having a full kitchen.

Peaceful & Serene
We needed a little getaway to get a break from our busy lifestyles. We decided on nearby Starved Rock, and are so happy we found Kishauwau! The cabins are adorable, clean, and have everything you would need including a huge jacuzzi tub. We arrived 4 hours early, and Teresa asked for our cabin to be cleaned next so we could check in. She explained the hiking trail for us to explore during the wait. The office has extra supplies, a huge movie library, and snacks. We spent our days hiking and exploring the grounds and Starved Rock. Our nights were filled with grilling, eating, drinking, bonfires, and star gazing. Our only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer! Absolutely a wonderful place to relax and recharge!
Could be great
Mattress needs replacing
Bathroom needs a good cleaning
Kitchen floor needs a good cleaning
Quiet peaceful weekend away!
Could not have been happier with the clean, quiet, relaxing atmosphere with beautiful surroundings. Enjoyed an orchard with many craft tents and displays nearby. Will definitely be back!
Beautiful, quiet, restful, educational fun.
We loved the quiet setting, the friendly and efficient staff who were available upon request and otherwise gave us the freedom to explore and relax on our own.
We went to two neighboring towns and learned and enjoyed wonderful meals, nice hikes and great bike rides.
The cabin was comfortable and well supplied and the setting is serene and beautiful.

A very relaxing mini-vacation
What we enjoyed very much exceeded our expectations. The cabin was beautiful, meticulously clean, very efficient, a real feeling of home away from home. The staff/owners were very helpful and directed us to some fun family activities when hiking was over. We loved being that close to Mathiesen and Starved Rock. Our 6 year old granddaughter was so enchanted she didn't want to leave the cabin and go home!
We have stayed here many times. It is a real down to earth fun natural place to visit and relax. The Family that runs it is just wonderful and accomodating. This is a great get away that is not to far. You can cook, have fires inside and out and just relax with that special person. I highly reccommend this get away.

Great time very peaceful!
Kathy and I had a wonderful time. This was our second time visiting. We are considering returning during the winter months for another weekend getway.

Great place to stay for peace and quiet plus lots to do close by
My Husband and I wanted a getaway not far from home with plenty to do close by. Neither of us like motel rooms and I like to do my own cooking and grilling. This was just the ticket for us. We also take our little dog with us when we can and 'Kishauwau on the Vermilion' have dog friendly cabins so that made it perfect for our stay. We were never bored with so many things to do within a very few miles of Kishauwau. All the staff were very friendly and helpful with all our needs & questions but at the same time totally respected our privacy. Thanks to 'Kishauwau on the Vermilion' for making our stay a really terrific experience.
Quiet, tranquil, and best nights sleep!
Just a stones throw away from all of 'technology' and we loved it! Beautifully landscaped area and cabins were just perfect for a couple's retreat.
Managed by great people and supplies available on the 'honor system'. Just minutes from Starved Rock and historical, friendly downtowns of Olgesby and Utica. We are planning another getway here in the very near future!
It was fabulous...more than we expected.
This place is incredible. It is clean, pristine, quiet. The cabins are nicely equiped and spaced for privacy. The owners/staff give you a sense of security and trust. We highly reccomend this place and will be back ourselves.
Great, relaxing getaway.
We enjoyed every part of the stay. My only wish is that we had not been reprimanded about our late arrival as the final part of our check out. This ended otherwise positive experience on a sour note.
relaxing, quiet, and intimate.
This was a great place away from the busy, fast pace world. Great place to find your self with your significant other. Really enjoyed myself.
Fun at 50
The place was very peaceful. The only issue we had was the bed was way too soft. We both woke up with a backache. The cabins are far apart, which was nice. The workers were very nice. The walk down to the river was good and senic. The place was clean.
Great place, great people,very friendly
we watched three movies,and took
advantage of the outside grill,and
morning coffee on the back deck with the
sounds of nature all around was very

We have visited Kishauwau more times than we can count! No matter how long we stay, I cry each time we drive away from this slice of peace tucked out in the woods and the countryside. The privacy, coziness, hospitality, clean air and access to the parks (and even to a few good shops, restaurants and watering holes)will keep us coming back again and again.
Great accomodations. Clean. Very private. If you don't want to be bothered, this is a great place to getaway. Our dogs were also welcome.
The place to go for a relaxing weekend
This was our fourth stay at Kishauwau since 2005. Our first visit was one of the most relaxing, serene weekends of my life and each ensuing visit has not failed to live up to that memory. Whether you stay at the cabin all weekend or head over to the state parks or Utica for a day, you are guaranteed a wonderful time. We will certainly be back!
Quiet and relaxing
we loved the resort and the Pines cabin in particular. The visiting kitten was a special treat. The grounds were lovely.
This was are first time to stay here. We enjoyed are time here it was peaceful, just all out perfect getaway if you need time from your busy schedule very relaxing. The other thing is it's all family owned so they care not like your chains of super8 and other hotels where its just a job. If you need a romantic getaway i would say this it, we are going to go back in the near future.
Enjoyed the time away at the cabin. Also nice to bring along our dog Maggie. Enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the nice cabin with all the conveniences of home. Very accommodating hostess.Would definitely come back.
Fabulous place to stay.
We loved staying here. Its close to everything you want to experience, but far enough away to be private and secluded. The cottages were clean and well kept. The only down falls that we could find was no cable or satelite tv, however the movie library was extensive and a great substitute, not to mention that we didnt spend that much time in the cabin. The bed was kinda hard. We like something a little softer, and might be a good idea to add a dresser to put your clothes in if a person was going to stay for any longer than a weekend. The owners were extremely friendly, accomodating, helpful and informative. I would prefer to stay here versus the bigger resorts. Thanks for everything. It was well worth our money. Cant wait to bring the kids with us next time. We know they will love it just as much as we did. Already planning our next vacation!
Great with a couple complaints
The only complaints are that the whirl pool water didn't get hot enough to make a nice bath and the cabin we stayed in had dogs in the past and my wife has pet allergies. Other than that, it's great. Beautiful location, comfy bed, and a great selection of movies.
Quiet and Peaceful Getaway
My wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Kishauwau cabins, along with our dog. Our cabin was just as described, with everything clean and in working order. It was a very quiet and private property, offering us a perfect chance to kick back and just relax, without the distractions of everyday life.
Getting back to nature!
The King Family at Kishauwau really know how to make people feel at home. They were very friendly and helpful. We were really impressed with our cabin and it had everything we needed. The surroundings were beautiful and this is the perfect place to have a romantic, peaceful, stress-free weekend. It's a short drive to Starved Rock or into town for shopping and eating, but we actually had the best time at Kishauwau. We loved sitting by the fire under the stars and listening to all the sounds of nature on the back porch. We were sad to leave and we're already planning our next stay.
Good place for families
We have come to this place for many years now and have always enjoyed it. It does seem a bit too expensive. But the cabins are nice and the grounds are large. It is good for families and meeting up with others.

Labor Day Weekend 2011
Once again, a holiday weekend snuck up on us and my wife and I found ourselves without solid plans. With some searching on Google, I came across Kishauwau. A lot of things were pretty much booked up for Labor Day weekend, but we were fortunate enough to find an open cabin for rent at Kishauwau. The website was easy to navigate and filled with good information and accurate pictures. Due to a chaotic schedule, we couldn't make it to the property until about 10pm Friday night. The owners were beyond accommodating and allowed for a late check in. The property was easy to find. Gps guided us directly to the property, but there were also clearly marked signs that led the way in from the main road. Upon arriving, we were greeted immediately for a quick and easy check in and were shown our way to the cabin. The cabin was perfect and exactly "as advertised” on the website. The property is very quiet and you really do feel "away from it all” here. While unpacking the car we looked up and were amazed at the amount of stars you could see on a clear night. There are multiple cabins on the property that are very well spaced out. Not right on top of each other at all, so you really received a privacy feel. Our cabin came equipped with refrigerator, stove, microwave, pots, pans, & cooking utensils, so we were able to bring our own food, but not have to worry about packing things like can opener, bottle opener or even matches. The bathroom was very sizeable, equipped with a stand up shower & a large hot tub, and well equipped with towels. This property is very conveniently located about 7 miles from Starved Rock and even less from Matthiessen Park. But if you stay here, I would personally recommend Boggio's Orchard. (can be found on the things to do section of the Kishauwau website) Please don't take my word for it, check out Kishauwau & the surrounding area for yourself.
Jayne from Hillside
A beautiful and relaxing place for our family and dogs. So quiet and pristine. We had everything we needed in the cottage and for meals, everything in the town for fishing and dining. I couldnt ask for anything more out of this fabulous weekend!
Can't beat it!
What a great stay! This cabin is as clean as you will see anywhere. A great combination of backwoods feel while being provided with all amenities you could need for a comfortable stay, and then some. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Truly great, down-home folks. The property was immaculate. There is plenty of room for a family get together, but the resort is very quiet/low-key (at least the weekend we were there). This particular cabin was great because it was tucked back in some beautiful, tall pine trees. Plus, the cabins are widely spaced so there is only a few even within sight. Only minutes from Starved Rock, the location was perfect as well. I know this sounds like a commercial for the place, but honestly it truly was a perfect weekend get away in a cabin that I couldn't have asked to be any nicer that left me wanting to come back.
Great place to relax ...
Location is perfect, our cabin was very clean and comfortable, service was great.
If you are looking for a weekend getaway, this place is perfect.
My one only suggestion would be to have at least basic TV in the rooms. The movies are free, but it would be beneficial to have even the most basic TV channels.
Hoping to return soon...
The cabin was a perfect relaxing getaway. I liked that I was in easy access of the office and other guests, but could also feel secluded looking out my back door at the woods behind the cabin. The staff was very helpful and friendly and were able to give me directions to anything I needed.
A very relaxing place, not far from the city!
We went to Kishauwau for a last minute getaway for my girlfriend's birthday. The place was recommended by a friend of ours who had stayed there the week before. It was a great time. Very quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Also very laid back. With Starved Rock right down the road it was convenient to plan a day trip hiking its canyons. The whirlpool was relaxing and added a uniqueness to the cabin experience. Overall we both had a blast (so much so that we stayed one additional night because it was so hard to leave!). A great place to relax and just enjoy good company, a nice cabin in a private setting, and appreciate the beauty of northern Illinois.
Round Lake, IL
We stayed fro 2 nights in the cabin with wirlpool, came with 2 children and 2 dogs, everybody had enough space. he owners are very pleasant and friendly, the cabin was clean and had everything we needed. One thing we wished for was a larger tv, but if you are not planning to watch it, it does not matter. Convinient location, shopping centers within 30 min, at the same time you feel like being far away from it all. Would like to come back in fall. Thank you for a nice weekend !!!

Quiet cabin in the woods
We wanted to get away for a few days of peace and quiet, and we wanted to stay in the Starved Rock area, but the lodge and inn at Starved Rock were in the past too noisy. We vaguely remembered seeing an ad about some cabins on the Vermillion River, Googled that and found Kishauwau on the Vermillion. What a great find! The hosts were gracious and welcoming, the cabins were clean and comfortable, and the two days were quiet and restful. We hiked all day at Starved Rock and Mathissen State Parks, then came back to the cabin for a whirlpool bath, a campfire and a wonderfully peaceful night. We will definitely return, and have told as many people as we can about this gem.
The Great Escape
This was our second stay at Kishauwau. My husband proposed the first time and then, naturally, we returned for the honeymoon! I loved it every bit as much as the first time!
We have a very busy household that is open to the public most of the time. Retreating into the woods for a bit of privacy is great for us ...but when you add the genuine friendliness of the staff and the amazing feeling that you can relax and be "at home" away from home...It is a simply divine experience!
There are so many things to do in the area. My favorite part is visiting the winery to pick up a bottle or two for our stay ;) The state parks offer outdoor adventure, but sometimes, it is just as nice to stay close to the cabin and enjoy the sounds of nature after hopping out of the whirlpool tub. We will definitely go back year after year!
Excellent cabin with everything you will need during your stay. We stayed in a cabin with a bed and pull out couch. Great for a couple or smaller family. We have 4 children (one who is an infant) and I would have preferred a separate bedroom, so next time I will choose a bigger one. Otherwise great place and great location. Lots of nearby hiking trails.

5th year anniversary Get-a-way
Everything was spectacular! The King family was as friendly and helpful as could be. We are undergoing a kitchen remodel, so it was especially nice to have a fully equipped kitchen to prepare my husband's favorites for our anniversary.
The cabin was decorated in a lodge theme that was nicely done and we loved the Whirpool tub. Everything was neat and clean. It was so nice to spend a weekend with each other with no distractions from the outside world. Your koi pond was peaceful and serene and we enjoyed sitting there watching the frogs and admiring your landscaping. Thanks, Kings, for an unforgettable weekend!
Our stay at the cabin was pleasant, quiet and relaxed.
My wife and I wanted to celebrate our 25th anniversary with a quiet getaway. We very much enjoyed the location of the cabin as it was close to Starve Rock. The cabin was well appointed, clean and comfortable. The guest services were very nice as well. Thanks!
Forest Park, Illinois
We have been having family retreats at Kishauwau for over 12 years and have found it to meet our needs for fun, privacy and convenience but the increase in prices may be a determining factor in choosing a site for next year. Any thought for special group/family rates for large families?
Our stay was a much needed relaxing vacation. Although it was only for one night, the tranquility of the cabin and grounds were just what we needed! Thanks for the pleasant and comfortable exerience.
We will certainly be back!
Jon and amanda
The cabin was clean and comfy. The area was quiet and peaceful!
Wonderful place to get away from the noise of the city.
We recently stayed at a Kishauwau cabin for two days and it was the most wonderful experience. We wanted to stay longer than what we originally booked. Not only does the cabin create a relaxing atmosphere but the surrounding area is private and peaceful. The cabin is equipped with everything you need and the owners were very helpful in giving us ideas of places to see and visit while we were there. Overall we had a pleasant experience here and are planning our next visit back in the fall. If you want to get away to a calm and relaxing spot in Illinois, Kishauwau is the place to stay.
A nice getaway from the city
We decided to rent this cabin for a couple of days and make it a wilderness weekend. The owners of the property were very nice, welcoming, and accommodating. The cabin was spotless and was a nice location amongst the other cabins on the property. There's a nice charcoal grill, full kitchen, and a fire ring.
Never used the whirlpool, and not sure I would want to. The water quality is not that great and it smells like sulfur. Otherwise, no complaints. I would recommend staying here for a nice getaway.
Steve & Angie
Our stay at Kishauwau was very relaxing.
The cabins at Kishauwau are very clean & are furnished very nicely. The cabins are far apart & provide you with your privacy. We loved our stay & will try to return soon.
Suprise trip for birthday
The setting was breath taking! Very nice. And clean cabins! Very nice workerS! Just wish there were no chairs and had a love seat or couch instead! Also the matress was very very stiff we both slept horrible n woke up stiff, and we r n r 30s. But it really reay is a ideal setting for your loved one!
Romantic, Relaxing, Scenic
My boyfriend and I went during the summer heat of July and were blown away by our cabin's perfect mix of luxury and nature. We loved the scenery and seclusion of our backporch and when the summer heat became too much outdoors, the whirlpool was a romantic and relaxing cool down. I can't wait to go back in Novemeber to get the campfire experience!!!
Escape from the city
This place is wonderful. It was very peaceful. The cabins are well spread out so that you have your privacy. The owners are very nice and informative. It feels like you are far from home if you live in Chicago. I enjoyed grilling steaks, making smores, having some wine and relaxing in the jacuzzi. While you feel like you are away from it all, there are places to eat and drink a short drive if you so desire. The restaurant / bar at the lodge at starved rock is very nice and has bands on the weekend. I can't wait to go back.
A wonderful getaway in the woods.
The owners were very friendly. The cabins were comfortable, decorated nicely, and had well equipped kitchens. The woods were right outside the back door and a pond was nearby. The grounds were very well kept. The office supplied some goodies and extras for a minimal fee, and games or movies (huge selection) were free. This was a great place to relax & be rejuvenated. We hope to get there again.
Fantastic place to stay!
My hubby and I decided to stay at Kishuawau as a get away for our 15th anniversary. It was exactly what we wanted. Very clean cabin, nice whirlpool tub, very peaceful and private. We love to hike and it is very close to Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Park. We'll be back again!
Very nice, secluded stay.
The stay was very nice. Maybe a bit overpriced, but for the secluded stay, we felt that it was worth it. If you enjoy casual bicycling, try Catlin Park near Ottawa. The owners worked with us on checking in Saturday instead of Friday.
Warm friendliness while still very private accommodations
My husband and I took a two day getaway to enjoy ourselves before the school year was to begin! The people here are so kind, friendly, and gracious! They are there to help in any way they can. The cabins are well spread out and we hardly knew anyone else was around. The cabin itself was very spacious but cozy, as well as very functional. The kitchen was great with full sized appliances, and I was even able to borrow a crockpot from the office, when I forgot part of mine at home!! Loved being able to borrow as many movies as we wanted and so refreshing to do so on the honor system! It is very convenient to Starved Rock and Mathiessen State Park, which we really enjoyed. Everything was very clean and neat with very plush towels, unlike those white ones at hotels. The only problems we encountered were a few large black flying ants, not enough hot water for one of the whirlpool baths, only a queen size bed rather than king size, and not much cell phone reception. The decorating, pillows, and candles were a lovely touch, and we appreciated the "handbook" of places to see and restaurants to eat at! One of the best parts was watching Cookie, the resort's dog, fishing for large stones and removing them from the koi pond! I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet. I would love to return here in the fall!
Elk Grove Village, IL
We were already planning our next visit within 10 minutes of checking in. Peaceful, clean, quiet cabin. The staff was friendly and helpful. An overall great experience. Can't wait to come back!
Relaxing cabin in a great location
I stayed here with my spouse when we needed to get away from the city for a few days. It was exactly what we needed! The cabin was super-nice and clean, and pretty secluded. We hardly noticed the cabins nearby. There's a great big yard where we played bocce and, even though the cabins were all full, we hardly saw another person. It felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. I loved sitting outside in the evening, staring at the stars and listening to the crickets. The cabins were very comfortable, with central air. I can't wait to go back in the winter and use the wood burning stove! Next time, I'll request a cabin with a porch swing. Some have them, while others do not. Overall, this was a great experience, and it's very close to the town of Utica and Starved Rock park.
Just Finsihed Graduate School
Great Way to reconnect with family before we all scatter for school year!
Not Posh but nice property/people.
I would classify my family as ones who enjoy the outdoors but are not outdoorsmen. That said we found this property to be well groomed grounds, dated but relatively clean cute cabin, nice family run operation-with a little better attention to detail could be quite a place for the $$. My biggest complaint-while some like to be out of touch with the world when on vacation I'm not one that falls into the category. Cell signal poor/non-existent(I'm on Verizon - normally good anywhere and I travel a lot). Could be overlooked but no land line in cabin makes communication a challenge. Lack of cable/satellite TV not available (to their credit this was known before hand) but in todays world there should be at least basic cable available. Unfortunately the TV/DVD television was on its last leg - sound was shot on TV and screen was close to shot. No internet service in cottages (only available @ main office)-a must for business professionals in todays world. I know for some of my friends this would eliminate them from consideration of the property. Once again - in todays world this should be available. Things that would make the property better - while I understand a lot of their philosophy is probably aimed at keeping cost low - they should require a cleaning fee and have the cabins cleaned and kept up by professionals - not leave it to previous renters. Dishes needed to be cleaned as last renters cleaned but not very well. Grill was not clean and really nothing to clean it with. Simply put - in a world full of slobs there is a reason why hotels/motels employ people to clean. Don't leave that in the hands of the renter. Utensils were very limited (especailly if you intend to grill). Stove worked but oven did not.
Otherwise, it seems as though you're in the middle of no-where but only 15 minutes from the entrance of Starved Rock and 25-30 minutes from Ottawa. Like I said - could be a great place w/ more attention to detail. We'd go back but hope for improvement.
Our daughter came home from Oregon and wanted to do a camping trip but we only had a couple of days. Found you on the internet, we thought it was reasonably priced and would be great for our needs. We were pleasantly suprised by the eminites and how comfortable the surroundings were. Took a canoe trip in and returned to the cabin for a cookout and family bonding. We are considering returning as we were very happy with our experience. Maybe next time without the kids! ;) Thanks
Arthur & Danielle
We got to the cabin area early after walking around starved rock all morning in the heat and they checked us in early. explained the movie and foods items then showed us to our cabin. It wasn't a shack stacked next to each other you have a lot of space between you and the next cabin. The online pics don't show you everything. we had a back porch that met up with the woods and right beyond that was the river. The cabin was larger than we thought it would be and you really just need to bring some food and clothes they provide everything else. the privacy was great. I grabbed a number of brochures to give to family and friends and when i showed photos i took they are planning to go. I will be going again and again as often as i can wife my spouse and maybe kids. The store for food is a little out of the way from any place you stay in that area so bring food. Kishauwau on the vermilion is right from our back porch there is a wooded hill that is about 70 feet down to the river. trails are available and the one leads straight to an large opening on the river to fish. Cell phone signal really wasn't there unless you go up by the road which was fine with us because it gives you relaxing enviroment and we took a small walk to the road called our kids and went back to the cabin. About 100ft from our cabin was a large koi pond. there are porch swings and alot of other little things you don't see on the website but unless you relax you really won't see it all. I recommend this if you need to reboot yourself. $5 for a big basket full of firewood when i thought it would be a store bundle. Go and enjoy. Thank you to them for a wonderful relaxing weekend
A quiet getaway
It was a perfect quiet getaway. We felt almost alone, there were other guests, but there was plenty of space between cabins. The cabin was all set up for whatever we might need and the giant tub was really nice. It was just what we needed and I would definitely go again!
Russ & Bon
This is a great place to get away from it all. There is enough nearby to do to keep us interested for a few days, and the cabin was a great getaway - secluded, peaceful, comfortable.
Get away-but still close to home.
Cabins are roomy and you feel secluded but you are close to all the sights. Peru IL is only 20 min. away and you can catch a movie or shop if you need to. The grounds are clean and attractive. Will go back again.
Chicago Land area
My husband and I have been married 25 years. This is a wonderful place to get away from it all. The cottages are spotless. Dvd's and VHS tapes are yours to borrow during you stay. Very wide selection. There are nice paths to walk and a quaint fish pond where frogs croak.Starved Rock is very short distance away for site seeing.
This is a Romantic get away. We highly recommend it.
Traveling we were looking for an overnight stay and found the cabins near starved rock. Because it was Thursday we were able to book for only one night. It was fabulous. We travel through this area regularly and will always stay at the cabin rather than a hotel. It was a wonderful relaxing stay. We found The Mill store in Utica carries delicious hand cut steaks for the grill. One night doesnt seem like a long stay but it was truly relaxing. Our only regret is we couldnt stay another night. We will return and plan to return with our kids as well. Our compliments to the office. Friendly and helpful if you should need anything.
Bob and Nora Foster
We've been coming to Kishauwau now for 4years. It started with our honeymoon and we come back every year for our anniversary. Every time it is wonderful. Although we do miss Ellen, Jaime and Teresa are doing a great job. They always make us feel welcome.
We love this place!
We try to come here at least twice a summer. It's the perfect place to get away from the city with our dog and enjoy all that Utica and Starved Rock have to offer. The family who runs the place couldn't be nicer. The cabins are large, clean and comfortable, with all the amenities you need to cook, bbq or just relax in a whirlpool tub. It's a little bit further out from Starved Rock, but close to Matthieson Park and we like being just a bit further out from the tourist spots. We will be back again and again!
Nice cabin nice property
The property is very nice and the cabins very spacious and comfortable. We were told that there was shore fishing available on the property along the Vermilion River but we could not see any access or the river itself at all so that was disappointing. We had 4 cell phones with us and none had reception at the property and no TV service so that was a bit of a drawback, but the free movies were nice. Everything else, the cabins, the property, firewood service and prices were great! I would probably water down the gravel roads around the site more often (just a suggestion). If you really want to get away and resally want to get unplugged from everything, including telephones, this is a very peacefull and comfortable place to stay.Thank you!
Awesome time at Kishawau :)
2nd time we stayed at Kishawau .. it's a great get-a-way from Chicago ... My wife and I plan to come here during the fall and winter months as well .. .great get-a-way from the bustle of city life, and our dogs loved the great outdoors !! :)

Wonderful as always!
I only stayed two nights but came home feeling like it was a week. It is so beautiful and peaceful. I have never found anywhere else like it. Thanks!
This is a very quiet and clean campground. Nice people, well kept, all the amenities we needed. Close to home for us. Not far from stores and Starved Rock is great. We'll probably go back again.
I brought my son with me to Kishauwau near starved rock for his birthday. We had a great time at cabin for 2 nights. Will be back to Kishauwau again.
We had a wonderful time.
The cabin was quaint and cozy. I was isolated and quiet. We were very close to activities.
The setting is peaceful and beautiful. The cabins are romantic. I wish I could have stayed longer. A little bit of nature close to the city.
What a wonderful experience.
We loved the quiet and relax environment. We are already planning our next visit. Also we have been recommending the cabins to our family and friends.

Peaceful and Friendly Experience
Your facility is so special! It invites everyone to experience simplicity in a natural setting. It was a wonderful place for for us to meet and spend valuable time with family members. The cabins are spotless! Even though our weather wasn't the best, we still had a wonderful time. I really looked foward to Terisa's baked goods everyday..it added to the at home feel.

Very peaceful and beautiful getaway.
My husband and I needed to getaway for a few days. This was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature and of course each other.
Lake in the Hills, Illinois
Peaceful getaway that is only a couple of hours away. Great location near Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Park. Cabins are wonderful, and such a plus to be able to bring our dogs with!
Hanover Park, IL
The cabin was really amazing. Everything about our stay was perfect and relaxing. If you're reading reviews you've probably already heard about the firewood deliveries and the 'honor system' shop they keep nicely stocked. We were in the Chippewa Cabin which was by far the most private one we saw. The back porch faced out over a nice forested hill that dropped down into a small creek. We could literally go all day without seeing another person if we stayed back there. The inside of the cabin was also very nice - clean throughout, well stocked with towels/kitchenware, beautiful bathroom. The only downsides involved the water - it's from a well so it smells of sulfur a little bit (not horribly, and can be easily cured by using nice smelling soaps) and the water heater which could not totally fill the huge whirlpool tub. You could still use the tub, but it wouldn't get scalding hot, as you have to use normal temp water after about halfway. Neither of these things were actual nuisances though. Just figured I'd mention them. It was an amazing stay and a great place for fourth of July weekend. I'd go again any chance I have.
everything is very clean. the cabin was very

A Peaceful Romantic Getaway
My wife and I stayed at the Pine Cabin and we had an absolutely fabulous time. It was like we were the only ones there. At the cabin we had the privacy we desired and all the comforts of home and we were just minutes from everything we wanted to see and do.
Relaxing overnight at an out-of-the-way, charming spot
Our intentions were to visit Starved Rock State Park but we wanted more privacy than the lodge/ cabins offer. These cabins are well-maintained, the owner is friendly (and nearby), the price was good enough, and the in-cabin jacuzzi is quite nice! We hope to visit again.
Great place for family fun!
We have been coming here for several years. This is a great place to stay if you're not interested in camping. There is a kitchen in all the units, comfy beds, and a lot of outdoor space for the kids to explore. You are close to Starved Rock Park and many other great things to do. I will continue to come here for a fun outdoor getaway!
Another wonderful stay!
We spent 4 lovely days at the cabins! We have been going there for 5-6 years and have enjoyed every stay! Once in Dec. - it was fabulous! Another time with family, 11 of us, in G'mas cabin; talk about wonderful! Everyone had a grand time. The staff does an excellent job, make you feel so welcome and help you in any way! Sure miss Ellen and her warm smile and friendly banter, we didn't have the priviledge of knowing Ben. Keep up the good work, kids, you have some big shoes to fill but you can do it!!! We will be back!
Very enjoyable stay, clean and great cabin.Great to have a fire outside and just sit and relax.
My family and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway to do as little or as much as you would like. Ideal location to visit Starved Rock State park. The cabins are kept in excellent condition and the "honor system" is truly a wonderful thing.

Got What We Expected: The Best
This was not our first stay at Kishauwau and we don't plan on making it our last. After the loss of Mrs. Ellen King, the family continues on in the same way with the same warmth, style, and quality.
You feel like you've come home, no matter how long you've been away.
The grounds are always manicured, the cabins are in tip-top shape, and - while you feel all the sense of privacy you want - there's a feeling of family. Even Cookie, the family dog make you feel like you were missed.
Plenty to do for outings and total relaxation back at the cabin.
We can't wait till our next visit.
Perfect peaceful and quiet getaway
Good place to go for a quiet getaway from the restless and busy times in our lives.
All the comforts of home but in the woods, feels like camping!
The location is great, close to Mathieson and Starved Rock. The cabins are cute and homey and well appointed with all the necessary kitchen and linen stuff. Big tub was a definite plus! Cabins are far apart so there is plenty of privacy and quiet. Spent our evenings around the fire pit, bbq and picnic table; and then nice to be able to sleep in a comfy bed, my kind of "camping"! The grounds are very well maintained and the hosts are very nice and accomodating. We plan on coming back to see this place in the fall (wooded location must be spectacular!); or even in the winter, there's a wood stove which we didn't use in June but it would be a very cozy getaway anytime of the year. So much to do in the area, next time we're bringing our bikes to ride the canal route, and would love to rent kayaks to float down the little Vermillion, very scenic river. A nice getaway location!

If you need to relax, this is the place.
This was one on the most relaxing weekends I have spent with my husband. No cell phone, tv or other distractions. The cabin was spotless, the bed comfortable and the grounds beautiful. The only problem we had was with the tile in the cabin. Towards the middle of the day, the tiles became very slippery with condensation. This was a big problem in the bathroom. I almost fell before I realised this was something I should be aware of. Also the dvd player was not connected to the tv and it took us an hour to figure out how the wires went.
Overall our stay was great. Our dog had a super time.

Peaceful and serene.
Above and beyond what we expected. Beautiful, clean, quiet and serene. A wonderful experience for my wife and I, and also for our little dog, Tasha. We will recommend this place to our family and freinds. We are already discusing when our next trip will be to Kishauwau, and we just got back yesterday. The videos, games and snacks were a wonderful amenity to the evening activities. The cleanliness was only surpassed by the freindliness of the entire staff there. We really enjoyed our stay and will be coming back soon. Thank you again for a good vacation!
much needed peace and tranqulity
The cabin was clean had a very home like feeling. We spent most of the time on the back deck with a small fire just relaxing and watching the birrds and animals what more can you ask for? Were already looking ahead to our nex visit. Ty and your staff
A little getaway from everyday life.
I highly recommend it. I loved our Cabin and would want the same exact one if I come back.(Hunters) The scenery was beyond words. I felt like I was at home, but with no, worries. It was so peaceful and welcoming.

Quiet and Private –Great Experience!
I have being doing the cabin thing for about 15 years now. This was one of the best stays I ever had. The cabins are large, clean and comfortable. Also you don't have to pack half your house to go here. Things like dish soap, coffee, filters, etc. are all provided. Also comes with a larger whirlpool tube instead of the smaller ones. Firewood delivered to your door makes thing even more convenient. Would highly recommend!

We had such a wonderful time here. The grounds were beautiful and cabins were very nice. It had everything you needed. It was a great location because you were not right on top of your neighbors and had some privacy.Further, you are close to all the attractions around, but could leave the crowds to come back to a peaceful place. We had a very nice time here and created great memories! We are definitely planning a trip back!
Amazing hideaway in the woods
No surprises! The cabin was as it was described, which included amazing privacy...not crammed in with others. We had a true relaxing stay, that allows us to have real couple time, watch a few movies, have a relaxed breakfast in our own kitchen, and then go out and explore the surroundings and return to a place where you can see the stars at night!

Low-key and Relaxing Stay
Great for families with children. Cabin was cozy and beds were super comfy. Had the first good night sleep in a long time. Kids' enjoyed watching movies and playing at the pond. We will be back. Thanks!
Loved our stay. Beautiful scenery, comfortable, welcoming, quiet and just what we needed.

My other Home
Whenever I go back to Kishawau, it feels more familiar and comfortable each time.
There is alot to do around the Cabin, or if you prefer not to do...it is relaxing and restful just to stay around the Cabin.
I really love it here, I get alot of fresh air, and always feel rested when I leave there. It's loke Home , or even better because it is away from the city/suburbs.
Amazing place in the woods
Beautiful cabins surrounded by huge trees and green grass with amazing amenities and a value you cant find anywhere else- this place was so much fun and we loved the movie selection! thanks for a great time!
Great Hassle-Free Weekend Escape
We were looking for a quick and simple last-minute get away from the crazy big city life and we found it. Kishauwau cabins on the Vermilion near Starved Rock was the perfect pet-friendly vacation. The cabins are clean, the community and family operated business is very warm. Everything worked out perfectly and we loved the nearby hike down to the Vermilion River and also enjoyed the nearby Starved Rock paths/hikes. The cabin is a lovely wooded area. Highly recommended!
We were so glad to find cabins with a full kitchen so close to Starved Rock. It was a perfect getaway - quiet setting & nice cabins. We're already talking about going back.
Spacious cabin and a very friendly staff!
We booked our stay here very spontaneously. I had a few questions in which terisa was very helpful with. The cabin was neat, cozy and smelled like grandma's house. No musty cabin smells here folks! The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our dinner. And the $5 bundle of firewood kept the bugs away while we were star gazing. We'll definately be back!

Very clean, large cottage! Best sleep I've had in a very long time!! It was so peaceful, and quiet. The grounds were lovely also.
My husband and I needed a few days to be alone and enjoy the peace & quiet. How relaxing this was! If you enjoy hiking, river rafting, or simply the outdoors this is the place for you. It is wonderful!
Peaceful Getaway near Starved Rock
My husband and i wanted to get away for a night and thought about heading down to Starved Rock to hike on the trails, and enjoy Memorial Day Weekend. I did a search online for cabins/cottages in the Starved Rock area and found this place. The resort/area is only a few miles away from the park, The cottage was clean, cute and peacefel. Such a cute little getaway! They had a grill and a little area for a bonfire right next to our cottage- which we loved! We were only here for one night, but it was well worth every penny! We will be back!!
Our favorite place to escape
We have been coming here almost every year for the past 10 years. The accommodations are always top notch and the staff is always wonderful. We just left yesterday and I can't wait till we can go back again!

What a beautiful and peaceful getaway
This is the second time we've been to Kishauwau, as our first time experience was pretty memorable. We wanted to go to a place of relaxation, surrounded by nature, where we can unwind and just enjoy one another's presence, and this was the perfect place that gave us all of that.
The cottage was clean and very cozy; the staff is always very friendly and helpful. The office is left open for a wide selection of movies or for some ice cream that you can pay for and leave in an envelope; I love the trusting, accommodating environment. Although there were a few minor problems with the whirlpool in terms of slow drainage (which they fixed as soon as we reported it), it was worth giving it a try. One can count on reliable service here at Kishauwau.
It's like home away from home, but just a much more relaxing, special, rare atmosphere.
St Joseph, Michigan
Wonderful escape weekend!
We were hoping to find a cabin to rent near the Starved Rock State Park, and if possible to be allowed to include our dog on the trip. Our expectations were far exceeded. The cabin was lovely, spacious, very clean, and comfortable. We were warmly welcomed - even Basco the dog! He enjoyed the plentiful squirrels; we enjoyed the peaceful porch at dawn with a backdrop of birds singing us into the day. Recommended - we will be back!

We were enjoying our marriage with no kids.
This place is just magical. It provides you with all you need for a romantic retreat for you and you spouse. You have your own cabin in the woods, a big deep hot tub, a kitchen filled with all you need including pots, pans, dishes, utensils, coffee maker, coffee, stove, refrigerator, a queen size bed with clean linen, no phones, a fireplace located in front of a cozy couch and only movies to watch (you bring or they have to check out free)-no cable or stations, a great family that owns and runs the place, cookie the dog that visits you, and complete privacy in clean quiet slice of heaven.
My wife and I have been coming here for over 20 years and we try to tell everyone we know about this place so they will be successful and keep this getaway here for us for another 20 years or more!
There is no place like this anywhere!
You need to come here for youself to find out the magic. You will be pleasently suprised!
Private, Peaceful, Perfect
We needed a break and we wanted to share this time with our friend Ellie, a shepherd mix, as well. The cabin was just right, thoughtfully equipped, and allowed us to reconnect with each other and, most importantly, with nature. And silence. Staff was helpful, yet unintrusive. A great place for reflection and reconnection.
A place you could call home!!
I beautiful place to stay. The cabin was amazing and cozy and the grounds and very peaceful and relaxing. Minutes away from activites to see and do. I would definately recommend them to all friends and families. Staff is very polite and helpful!
The setting was perfect. The cabin was great, very comfortable and well equipped. We will definitely go back again. The owners could not have been nicer or more accommodating. It was a great getaway from our hectic everyday.
First Cabin Stay
My boyfriend and I truly enjoyed our stay at Kishauwau. The cabin was so cozy and comfortable we really got the chance to enjoy a romantic and relaxing evening. We would have loved to stay longer. The price for the cabin was a little steep for one night but with all that is included (i.e. furnishings, silverware, movies, fireplace, whirlpool tub, etc.) one could not expect it to be much cheaper. Because we stayed such a short time, I was not aware if they offered any weekly or prolonged stay deals. The owner was very welcoming and helpful and really made us feel good about our stay. It was a first for both of us to stay in a cabin and we couldn't have had a better first experience! We would definitely visit again, maybe enjoy our time a little longer too!
Cabin in the Woods near Starved Rock
We booked our stay for May in the Spring and hoped for rain. The more rain the better the waterfalls flow in the hundred foot deep canyons of Starved Rock State Park.
The cabin we stayed at was warm and cozy. With a full kitchen, wood burning stove, lots of windows for a forest view and light, and a whirlpool bathtub made this an ideal getaway.
We cooked our breakfast and made lunch in the cabin. We spent the afternoons hiking in the State Park and visited the Lodge and nearby Utica for dinner and drinks.

Enjoyable as always.
We have been coming here for about 12 years, and every time it has been great. A relaxing get away not far from home. We will be back in July, this time with our two children and their spouses. They have never been here, but have heard many times from us how we love it here.
My wife and I stayed here for our anniversary and the weekend couldn't have been better. The place is wonderful. Cozy and quiet, just what we wanted for our weekend. With a 3 year old and 1 year old at home, sleep and relaxation while away is just what we were both looking for. We checked out other resorts in the area, but for the price and a private cabin, this couldn't be beat. This place is perfect for a quiet get away!
Relaxing in the woods
We hadn't been to Kishauwau in over ten years, and it was far too long. We loved Chippewa (our cabin) -- extra quiet, and it backs on to a little creek so it's even more private than the rest of the cabins (which are all nicely spaced out). Chippewa has a covered porch out back with a hammock and a picnic table (some of the other cabins have porch swings), and there's a fire pit and a barbecue back there. So we had a few meals out there, and grilled one night as well.
As great as the cabin was, we did venture out to Starved Rock to hike. It's very close -- door to door, maybe ten minutes. We spent the day getting tired, and then went back to the cabin to grill some steaks out back by the creek and watch the sun set through the trees.
Kishauwau is great about having diversions ready for guests, too -- the main house has a huge wall of movies you can borrow (the cabins have TV/VCR/DVD, but no cable or satellite), as well as board games and puzzles. One night we played Trivial Pursuit, the other night we watched an old movie. There are also snacks and a few useful things (charcoal and firewood, for example) for sale. If we had stayed another night, we would have had a bonfire.
Jamie and Terisa and their kids couldn't have been more welcoming, and their dog Cookie is very friendly (if you like dogs -- I do).
We're planning to go back over the summer sometime with our nine-year-old daughter -- there's a lot to do in the area during the day, and we think she could learn a bit from Kishauwau about just kicking back and relaxing without TV or Internet access, too.
We can't recommend Kishauwau enough -- we came back even more rejuvenated than we thought we would (and we knew we'd be relaxing all weekend).
Wonderful Get away!
Wonderful Get away! No hassles, a few requests made and Terisa helped us out. Not a problem. Comfy, cozy, warm, welcoming. A perfect get away. Can't wait to head back again.

Very relaxing, peaceful, and romantic.
We could not have picked a better get away spot. I was so quiet and peaceful that we were able to get lost in our romance. The candles by the hot tub, the fireplace, and candle light dinners were so romantic. The weather was not accomidating but the hosts were. Thank you Kishauwau for a great three days. My wife and I will always remember it. We will definitely be back.

Cabin fever girls
Our cabin was clean comfortable and beautiful.Rustic yet quite kushy. Full kitchen 2 bathrooms really sweet wood burning stove in the living area, can't say enough about the inside. One step out the door, instant middle of the woods serenrty. The surrounding cabins give it a settlement community feel. Each cabin has an outdoor firepit so you can build a roaring fire and stay toasty while you look up at the display of stars. We were lucky enough to be there during the full moon, which was spectacular. Thank you Teresa for your wonderful hospitality. We will be back again and often. We recommend the larger cabin for girlfriend getaways, yoga knitting or quilting retreats. Rent a few for family reunions. Perfect spot.

Beautiful and Intimate
We were looking for a place to stay near Starved Rock, and due to Starved Rock Lodge being booked we came across this facility. Weren't sure what to expect. We absolutely loved it and the environment. When we checked in, they were so hospitable. It has an old fashioned charm on the way they run the business and is definitely a wonderful getaway from the city. We're so glad the other place had no vacancies. We will definitely be returning.
New York City
A peaceful improvement.
- The porch light was yellow and not bright at night, we would have liked it to be white and brighter.
- We had to stop the hot tub from filling up with water because the warm water finished.
- The knifes weren't sharp enough. Knife sharpener would have been helpful.
- Cable was a big deal breaker. We would have loved some cable maybe channels 1-10 at least.
- The water is really bad. Water purifier is a must.
- Perfect cabin and hot tub size and space for two people.
- Great porch electricity, smoke bucket, size grill, and fire pit.
- Great appliances, utensils, and movie options.
- Great lighting in the cabin.
- Great open grassy field.
- Peaceful pond and swings.
- Friendiest employees.
- Great location and near everything.
Great Getaway Spot With Great Customer Service
Cabin was clean and ready when we arrived. Very friendly workers who took care of our every need. Had a great time and would definately recommend to anyone looking for a quiet getaway in a great location.
Best kept secret in Illinois
Kishauwau is perfect for us. Due to some medical situations, we can rarely find the foods we need in restaurants. Staying at Kishauwau is about the only way we can have a vacation and not suffer for eating things that cause problems.I can bring pre-made foods and know there will be no difficulties, as well as save money. The kitchens are fully equipped with all the appliances needed. If you choose to dine out, there are many options available in the area.
The cabins are clean, comfortable and private. The one we prefer overlooks a wooded ravine and is perfect for total relaxation. When we feel like exploring the area, there are a number of State Parks in the area, if we decide to get and see the countryside. The scenery in the area is amazing.
We love the peace and quiet. Cooking out over the grill that's provided makes for very tasty meals. The fire pits are great for enjoying an evening of 'camping', while being able to sleep in a real bed, with aC, indoor plumbing and no bugs indoors!
We're planning another trip out there soon. It's an easy 90 minute drive, and with gas prices what they are, that's also a big consideration.
Always a perfect getaway
This is our third trip to Kishauwau in the past year or so. It's truly our home away from home, and whenever we visit, we wish we didn't have to leave--ever. The grounds are gorgeous, and the cabins are clean and spacious, with each one affording a great deal of privacy. You can grill your dinner outside and enjoy a bonfire in your own firepit, or stay inside and burn a fire in the wood stove and relax in the over-sized jacuzzi tub while listening to music on the CD player. The setting is spectacularly beautiful; the cabins are quiet and comfortable. We've made many terrific memories there and look forward to more. The King family are wonderful hosts, and we highly recommend this exquisite spot!
Relaxing and romantic
The perfect getaway for my fiancee and I - romantic and relaxing. The area is beautiful all seasons but I especially staying there when it snows and we were honored with a snowstorm the weekend we stayed.
Our sanity saver
We have been staying at Kishauwau for many years. The peace and quiet is unsurpassed, and the hospitality that we have received has extended to the next generation. Off the beaten path, set back in the woods, and surrounded by nature is such a welcome respite from the daily grind, and we leave restored and refreshed every time. Each cabin has a full kitchen and wood burning stove. The facilities are spotless, and the staff warm and accomadating.
Only a few miles from Starved Rock State Park and the LaSalle Peru area, this is the perfect getaway spot for us!
Kishauwau is a beautiful place. We have seen deer close by and have had hummingbirds fly up close to us as we sat out on the swing. The cabin itself is wonderful. The beds are clean and comfortable, the kitchen is stocked with everything that you need (other than food) and the whirlpool tub accomodates two people easily. There are great restaurants and site seeing close by. This is a super place to relax unwind and enjoy peace.

great location--very nice cabins
We have been staying at these cabins for 10 years and have always been very happy with the service and the cabins. The cabins are clean and we like the whirlpool tub and the wood burning stove. Also no TV only DVD player is a big plus for us.
I have been to these cabins on more than one occasion and every time the trip gets better than the last! The staff is always very accomodating and goes out of their way to attend to any needs their customers may have. We were running late checking in and they were extremely understanding and waited until after 9:00 p.m. for our arrival and gave us full directions and explanation. The location is beautiful and extremely peaceful. Our cabin came with all of the amenities including a fully stocked kitchen and whirlpool bathtub.
I couldn't have asked for a better experience!!
Most relaxing place I have ever been!
I first stayed at Kishauwau many years ago with my first husband & loved it so much that I had to bring my 2nd husband there. He loves it as much as I do! The air is pure & the suroundings are absolutely beautiful. It's so peaceful & Terisa & her family make you feel as if you are part of their family. We may not be able to visit every year like we would love to (even more if possible) but we cherish our beautiful memories in our minds till we are able to return to "a little bit of heaven".

Peace and Quiet
I have been going out to the Starved Rock area for about ten years now. I have stayed at many other lodging accommodations between Ottawa and Peru yet never found a place that truly felt right for me. This past summer I came across Kishauwau and my search was finally over. Since then I have have been a guest each month and have told countless friends about this little treasure tucked away in Tonica, Illinois.
From the moment I check in I feel like one of the family vs just a guest for the night. They have truly thought of everything to make my stay perfect. Check in is easy and fast, they exceed my expectations to accommodate all of my check in needs.
I have stayed in numerous cabins all of which have been charming. Each time I feel as if I have steped back through time when I see the beautiful quilts, wood burning stoves, and views out the windows. The cabins are very comfortable and quite spacious. Kitchens are stocked fitting all my cooking needs
When I have the late night munchies I can head over to the office and purchase anything from sweet to salty, a little ice cream, or even a pizza. I can also borrow a movie or a game for the night as well. My nights always end with a campfire either outdoors in the pit or in the wood burning indoor stove. During the summer don't worry if you forget the fixings for smores...you can always purchase them at the office as well.
Kishauwau is minutes away from all of the major hiking trails, quaint shops and fantastic restaurants of Utica, and massage therapists at the Lodge at Starved Rock. Yet, away from the crowds and craziness of the Lodge at Starved Rock or Grizzley Jacks. Kishauwau is my ideal location to get away from it all and just relax.
In the towns nearby you can rent a kayak and head out on the Fox River for a bit of upper body and core work, you can book an exhilirating skydiving jump, or you can even enjoy hitting the trails by horseback.
I am already booked for next month!
