Excellent service with Kurt and Slumberland began before we set foot on the island. Owner Kurt was in contact with our group weeks before we arrived helping us finalize plans, make travel arrangements, and give advice. Upon arriving on Utila, Andy, the on sight manager, met us and took us to Slumberland villas. The villas are away from the main town to feel a bit secluded, yet close enough for a relaxed 15 minute walk to the heart of the town. A tuk-tuk is always a quick call away and we used them often.
The villas were clean and inviting, high ceilings and a deck right into the water. Our favorite part was wading out right off our deck to explore the reef that was right in our "Backyard". The villas were hot inside during the days so most of our time was out in the water or in the hammocks on the decks. We rented both villas and recommend the same as they are close together and for a group of 6 or more both are your best option.
Utila is an incredible island. Beautiful water, friendly people, and an island feel that gave our weary bodies the break we needed. We searched for many a day for the place to stay on Utila and for price, service, location, quality, and comfort, Slumberland excelled. We will be back. -

My boyfriend and I spent 5 nights at Slumberland and they were fantastic!
The on site manager, Andy, was extremely helpful. He met us at the ferry dock and arranged transportation for us to the villa. He made sure to answer all our questions, supplied us with cell phones, and let us know that we were welcome to contact him at any time.
The villas were spectacular! See the photo - it really does look like that. I told my boyfriend nothing about the property before our arrival and once he saw it his jaw dropped. Slumberland is right on the ocean, with expansive views from the second floor balcony. We snorkeled right off the front steps. The two bedrooms, living area, kitchen are very spacious. Some furnishings are a little old, but that is part of the charm. We loved staying there, would definitely recommend, would definitely stay there again. -

My friend and I stayed in both the east and west villas. We had the same issue as a previous reviewer who was placed in the wrong side of the villa. It was not bad, though, because we had access to both sides of the villa for a few days while we were moving things.
The villas are great. They are right on the water and the snorkeling in front is very good. There are also a few iguanas on the property that were frequently sunning themselves in front of the villa.
Andy Bernard, the property manager, accomodated all of our needs and was available when we needed him. He is friendly and visited the villa a few times just to chat.
I did not find the villas to be run down as a previous reviewer stated. The only minus that I found for the property is that it's a long way from town. The positive side is that it's quieter.
Coral view restaurant and dive shop are further down on the road away from the town. The dive shop is close and has great instructors. I highly recommend it. -

We went to Utila because my husband was playing at Sunjam. We were looking for something far from the madding crowd, peaceful, next to the water, comfortable and affordable. Slumberland fit the bill in more ways that one. The house sits right next to the water so you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean, you can snorkel during the day, doze off in the hammock, make meals in the fully-equipped kitchen, read your book on the porch, walk into town, eat an awesome fish sandwich at Fidi's. Kurt helped us book very quickly online and andy Bernard was an excellent host - he met us at the ferry drop-off, arranged for transport to Slumberland and back, showed us the ropes, gave us a discount at his restaurant and did everything humanely possible to make our stay be exactly what it needed to be: a much needed relaxing vacation.

We appreciated the owners's attentiveness through email prior to arrival, and it was great to be met at the dock by his friendly manager. Also, since we got back, he has acknowledged my concerns and says that improvements are in the works. We were very disappointed. The floors were clean and dust free but the dirt in the bathroom was shocking. Underneath the toilet seat was soiled and the shower was grubby with lots of old hair on the floor. I bleached everything, then felt happier. But add to that the following, and it all seemed really dingy: cutlery was rusty, fridge rusty and leaky, toaster broken, coffee maker worked 2nd day after bleaching, half the light bulbs burned out so we took the good ones from the bedroom we weren't using, pots dented and utensils beat up, no corkscrew, no ice cube trays, no washing or drying cloths, old blood stain on the sheets, windows wouldn't stay open, and we had a resident cockroach. The manager did bring us cloths and a new toaster on day 3. Perhaps I should have noticed before we went on holiday that the posted reviews were from 2010, although I don't know if that would account for the run down condition of the beach house.
We didn't cook there - it was too depressing. 'Well appointed kitchen' - not at all. I feel that the web site needs to be updated and more honest.
We did enjoy the location, beautiful, windy, quiet, snorkling was great, but it should be stated that good foot protection is a must. Walking out to the reef is treacherous.
Many nice restaurants and the walk into town was lovely. Friendly island - watch out for motorbykes and golf carts!Response from Kurt Halverson - 10/05/2012

We ask all of our guests to inspect the villas thoroughly and report any dissatisfaction to us or our representatives within the first 24 hours of their arrival to voice any of their concerns. Any "problems" will be addressed IMMEDIATELY, if possible, and/or a reasonable discount will be considered if the guests' expectations have not been satisfied. Since this posting, the previous cleaning staff have been replaced and new kitchen utensils, refrigerators, ceiling fans, bed & bath linens, and complete replacement of the original windows facing towards the sea has occurred. Additionally, the outside decks and stairs are being re-painted as well as the exterior window & fascia trim as we continue to update & upgrade the property to meet and hopefully exceed our guest's expectations.......

This is a nice house in a beautiful spot - that cannot be argued. However, after a 5am power outage and a long delay reaching the local contact our group lost a night of sleep and were murdered by mosquitos. This is a potentially malarial area, so having good aC/power is a must, and there was confusion at this place and we never got the control/information we needed to avoid this disaster. This could be a great place, but you have to be vigilant and ask lots of questions!

Electrical power needs for the island of Utila are provided by a private energy company known by the acronym UPCO.Consequently, because of fluctuating world oil prices and the fact that Utila is a small island in the middle of the Caribbean, we have some of the highest Kwh prices in the world as well as some inconsistent power surges and outages. These disruptions in power are unfortunately beyond our control. In our "Greetings" letter that we send to all of our guests prior to their arrival, we address the power situation as well as recommend guests pack insect repellent or Avon's Skin-so-soft as an "ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure." In the end and after-all, please don't lose sight of the fact that we are....a small tropical paradise absent some of the conveniences of a modern, urban society and this is what appeals to 99% of our previous guests.

Our stay at Slumberland's East villa was wonderous. We have been on 50+ international vacations all over the world and the snorkeling at slumberland was the second best that I have ever seen. We snorkeled 3 times a day right off the deck. Eels, needle fish and an octopus came right up to the bottom stair while we were sitting there. We didn't even need to go diving because the snorkeling was so excellent.
The Caretaker, Andy did just that. He took extra special care of us and all of our needs. We feel like we made a friend while we were visiting. Andy was a great addition to the villa.
The villa was clean, well situated and only a short walk to town. We cooked in for most of our 2 week stay. We loved the cross breeze. The covered deck, hammock and lounge chairs were nice. The cell phone came in handy since we were a ways from the town. I feel like I picked out the best choice that I had looked at for our stay on the island. We looked at some of the other accomodations available and I am really glad that I picked Slumberland. The caretaker, the ocean and the location were the best that we found during our stay. We spent our last week in Roatan and wished that we had spent all 3 weeks at Slumberland. We felt lonely when we arrived in Roatan, without andy being there to answer our questions. We hope to return soon and will not bother going to Roatan. We will spend our time at Slumberland. Thanks for sharing your little piece of Paradise with us. Slumberland would appeal to all kinds of travelers, it may not be fancy but it sure is homey and peaceful. See you soon, Preston and janie -

We really loved staying at Slumberland. The owner's representative was great, he met us at the dock and got us settled in. The East Villa, where we stayed is beautiful, it felt like a Carribean hideaway. There were deck chairs and a hammock where you could sit in the sun or shade and watch the boat traffic go by. The villas are about a 15 minute walk from Chepes beach, which is great for bobbing in the water. The beach never got busy and was kept really clean. We walked everywhere, it was good exercise and gave us a chance to talk with the locals and other tourists. Utila has a real small town feel and it is a really welcoming place. Slumberland was great, because you could walk into town when you felt like it or you could stay home to have peace and quiet if you felt like it. We had an excellent stay and would definitely return.

We stayed here for a week and absolutely loved it, and wish it had been longer! As long as you don't mind a 10-15 minute walk into town (don't forget your flashlight at night!), or don't mind procuring some other form of transport, it was great to be a little ways away from the main town area. Our absolute favorite thing was the porch right out over the ocean complete with hammock and lounging chairs. We also enjoyed watching the crabs, iguanas, and other critters down in the nice little man-made tide pool area below (the East Villa). Snorkeling out in front of the villas was great, so be sure to bring/rent your snorkel gear! Kurt was welcoming and very helpful with arrangements/suggestions/tips. Would love to go back again!

Service was great. Kurt was very helpful and answered all of our questions. House was beautiful and location was the best. Steps into the ocean, a great deck with hammock and perfect setting for cool ocean breeze. Only thing needed is flashlights, this part of island is very dark after sunset.

At least we had a wonderful time in that house hearing music and chilling in the sun. -

We were a two families (10) and rented both Villas with 4 young adult and two teenager, have a lot fun Diving, Snorkling, and enjoying the Utila life lay back atmosphere.
Weather was excellent, (no too hot) with the cabins right on the water there is a constant breeze that keep the mosquitoes away.
The marine life was very good just in front of the villas we saw by just snorkling, eagle ray, eels, sea turtle, and all sorts of corals and different fihishes, -

We were a group of 2 couples that stayed at slumberland during Easter week. Kurt made sure we had a ride from the airport and provided plenty of info about the island, even helping us get set up with alton's dive shop, which was a great experience! We had a power outage and he was there in no time to help us and also made sure we had plenty of water. The house sits on a quiet stretch of reef near the public beach. The snorkeling right outside our door was the best! At the end of the week we weren't ready to leave!

The view from the expansive deck—the rugged coastal mountain range across 20 miles of turquoise ocean—is spectacular. You can swim, snorkel and/or dive right off the shore. The villa is comfortable, well appointed and everything one would hope for. The host, Kurt Halverson, seems to know everyone on the island and steered us in the right direction every time. This place is a slice of paradise; we will most definitely be back.

Kurt is a top-notch host who waited hours for us after our flight got delayed and almost didnt make it. He gave us a detailed overview of the island, recommended places to sightsea and eat, hooked us up with locals to take us out to water cay, and ensured we had everything we needed.
The snorkeling outside of the villa was one of our favourite things to do when hanging out in the afternoon. The villa was incredibly clean and it was great to have use of a fridge and kitchen (even though we didnt use it). The walk was about 15-20 mins into town, but we didnt mind the walk in - Kurt also hooked us up with bikes to boot around the island with. The 10% discount at Munchies was also amazing to go along with the great food and service.
Thanks Kurt for all your help - we miss Utila and look forward to our return one day.

Slumberland was our first experience on the beautiful island of Utila. We had such a peaceful stay there and had so much fun snorkeling right off the steps and exploring the surroundings. The owners are great and very helpful! They helped us arrange our travels there and made sure we had a great stay. We fell in love with Slumberland and Utila and went back again (stayed at Slumberland again) and we bought our own piece of paradise.
