The Jungle Lodge at Hacienda del Lago
Utuado, Puerto Rico
(Property location is approximate)
Additional Location Information
Our charming hacienda is located in the Central Mountains and between two lakes, Caonillas and Dos Bocas, upon which there are fishing tournaments and restaurants located, accessible by water taxi. The river connecting these two great lakes runs right alongside the cottage and is the border to our property on the southern side. The river is running and is a fish hatchery, but also is used for bathing. Our hacienda in its history encompassed Lake Caonillas and was 5000 querdas (acres) in size, used for growing coffee. This area is known as "La Buena", because of its beauty, lushness, friendliness and calm.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Jungle Lodge. Ms. Jones is a great host and the cottage is well appointed. The only bad part was having to leave!
Went here with my boyfriend for our annyversary and I just have to say it was perfect! Pictures don't do justice to it, is more beautiful and amazing in person! The place is so peaceful we didn't know how to leave! Marlene is such a nice and sweet person, she will make your stay even more charming! We definetely want to go back again and recommend La Casita!

Perfect Jungle Bungalow
We loved this place! And Marlene is a fabulous hostess! I would highly recommend Hacienda de'l Lago to anyone looking to stay in the jungle...it's just perfect. The colors, sounds, the woodsy smell... The property is quiet and relaxing, and my friend and I were able to get dinner across the street two nights in a row (by far the cleanest meals we ate in PR). I also got an amazing massage at the hotel across the street (ask for Fernando). When we weren't exploring the area, we spent most of our time on the porch drinking cocktails and listening to the birds - the most pleasurable use of our time by far. Our last night, we shared stories with Marlene over a bottle of wine - another favorite moment. And her lawn smells like cilantro!!! It's crazy. I loved this place and would totally book it again. Thanks Marlene! xo

Magical, Tranquil Paradise!
From the moment we walked down the steps we knew we were in Paradise. The Casita sits surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. The inside was just big enough, comfortable bed, small table 2 chairs and a tiny kitchen and bathroom. We sat on the porch whenever we were there to fully enjoy the paradise!
Marlene greeted us as soon as we arrived, her home is on the property, with her 2 family members, Yoyo and Bianca. The 2 sweetest dogs ever. Meeting Marlene was like greeting a dear friend you haven't seen for awhile.
Our 1st morning we were greeted with cut Papaya from Marlene's Tree, delicious.
We enjoyed using the BBQ and having a fridge to keep breakfast foods in. We had dinner one night across the street and it was delicious.
The only negative is if you go during the week the only place to eat is across the street, so plan wisely and bring food to BBQ and cook on the burner on the Grill.
You are isolated but that is part of the beauty!
Response from Marlene S. Jones - 01/16/2014
Dear Elenita and Howard,
it was entirely my pleasure to host you in Paradise! You were welcome guests and it was wonderful to meet you, yes, like old friends.
I'm sorry you didn't get to eat at the local bohios. Around New Years many people were taking some holiday time themselves, but they're back on schedule again. I missed them too! I eat at Asado de Papa almost every day - the one just over the dam - for the great food and bbq Luis and this family make. I'm sorry you didn't get to have that.
It is so nice to know that you and Howard really enjoyed the beauty and tranquility of this precious little spot. Thank You!

A feast for the senses!
We traveled to Puerto Rico to celebrate my 65th birthday & La Casita was a perfect spot in which to do that. At La Casita we learned to let the day unfurl before us & truly started to experience our vacation. The little cabin is inviting from the moment you lay eyes on it. The settee out front invited you to sit & experience the sounds & colors of the mountainous region of Puerto Rico. Although small there was attention to little details inside. Lovely cut flowers, artwork, natural soaps, a sitting area & comfortable bedding.
The road we took from the Rincon area was beautiful but treacherous at times. Marlene gave us excellent directions from Utuado and was sitting by the road when we arrived ready to welcome us to the property she dearly loves. While there we visited the Cueva Ventana and some of the local coffee haciendas but the best part of our stay was the beauty that surrounded us. If you are looking to enjoy some local foods, don't mind the challenging roads and want to experience another side of Puerto Rico this is the place for you.
Response from Marlene S. Jones - 01/09/2014
It was a pleasure to have you stay at the cottage and experience and enjoy the slow pace of life as it unfolds in this beautiful area of Puerto Rico. Maybe that makes our foods taste so good too.
Thank you for noticing the smaller details inside!
Although for a short stay, you have smelled, tasted and heard all the things that make this area La Buena.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You were wonderful guests.
Adorable little cottage in the mountain jungles of Puerto Rico
This cozy little cottage in the jungle is not only secluded and romantic but clean and comfortable. After out first night here we spent the day just hanging around the property enjoying the scenery. You can hear the sounds of the birds, frogs and chickens. There is a waterfall and river adjacent so the sounds of the water are calming. Watching the clouds come over the mountains was spectacular.
The owner Marlene is generous and kind. Not only does she bring fruits and goodies, she can tell you what is there to do nearby, in case you want to explore. She made sure we were comfortable and was so friendly that we felt we were staying with family. We hope to come back to this place again. If you are looking for a romantic few days off the grid with a lovely hostess and a clean safe place to stay, look no further. I highly recommend La Casita. Read more

If you are looking for a unique, secluded experience a couple of hours from San Juan than you should look no further. Marlene's Casita offers up all the basic amenities needed to relax in the tropical beauty outside Utuado. With a stocked kitchen, comfortable queen bed, and grill for cooking there's not much else you need to spend a couple of nights along a creek in the woods.
La Casita is a short drive to coffee plantations, the Ruta Panoramica, and several other sights. Marlene is a perfect host and tour guide. Read more

Loved La Casita - So Peaceful
Cute little cabin was very comfortable. Set in the mountains, next to a river where we listened to waterfalls, rapids, and chirping coquis. Bird of Paradise and other flowering plants and lush vegetation everywhere. It was so relaxing sitting on the porch by candle light in the evenings, and enjoying delicious Puerto Rican coffee and tropical fruits in the mornings. This was a great location for day trips in central PR, including the Rio Camuy Cave system (www.aventuraspr.com), Tanama River cave tubing, Arencibo Radio Telescope, Caguana Indian Ceremonial Park, and more. Marlene was such a lovely and interesting host. We stayed 4 nights and so thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
A Jungle Paradise
If you're looking for some variety in your beachy Puerto Rico vacation, the central mountains region is a great place to visit, and in particular Marlene's lovely cottage in Utuado, where my boyfriend and I stayed a couple nights. The house is very nicely put together and the surrounding plantlife is astonishing. Marlene is an extremely attentive host, accessible via email or phone and only too happy to give you advice during your stay as well.
Know that it's a long winding (but beautiful) mountain road to get here, nearby restaurant options might be limited (note we were here during low season, and on weekdays only), the power can go off every once in a while, and there will be bugs. But if you don't mind that, and you've always dreamed about living in a jungle paradise, this is your chance.

Excellent experience!!! Enjoyed it sooo much!
We stayed in the cottage for three nights during our honey moon trip to Puerto Rico recently.
It was a great experience for us!
Marlene, the landlady, was so nice... It was absolutely an unforgetable experience in our life!

Beautiful Mountain Retreat
My husband and I stayed at La Casita at Hacienda de Lago for 3 nights in March 2013. Our experience was absolutely wonderful. Marlene is a wonderful hostess making us feel right at home. She brought us a gift every day. We had nice visits with her and met her pets and horses. She knows the area well and has suggestions for places to eat and things to do. The river on her property is beautiful and full of fish. The views are spectacular and she has wonderful landscaping. We are not resort type people and this quiet retreat in the interior of the island was exactly what we like. It is a short drive to visit 2 interior man made lakes and the window cave. Read more

San Juan, Puerto Rico
A lovely retreat!
La casita is a lovely place. Is comfortable and full of charm. If you are looking for luxury, this is not the place. However, we were looking for a place to escape the city and just enjoy nature. If you want to enjoy nature and simple things in life, La Casita is the place.
Marlene, the owner, is very responsible, the transactions for renting were easy to do and she answered all my emails promptly. She received us and made us feel at home. Her personality is sweet and you would feel like if you have known her forever.
The home is small, your little "casita" in the mountains. However, it has plenty. Such as books and dvds that you can watch in your computer. It has a barbecue outside, which we used to cook dinner and ate at the balcony while looking at the stars (you can see the stars in Utuado :-). The bed was comfortable and the shower was stocked with organic products. The kitchen has many utensils, a small fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker. Marlene provided us with coffee, milk, and tea.
Utuado is full of little nice places to eat. We stopped at a small place in front of the lake with delicious chicken and rice. We ate two dinners and took one to go, paid less than $15.00. There is also the restaurant in Casa Grande, the hotel just crossing the street. We did not eat there, but had drinks one of the nights, it was nice too, however more expensive.
The environment is peaceful, you feel in one with nature. The weather is wonderful and we had nice low temperatures at night to sleep. The casita does not have ac, but is not needed, however we needed the quilt :-).
What I like the most was being there in the mountains. Either, waking up to the beautiful surroundings and sip a cup of coffee in silence enjoying nature; or having nice conversations while enjoying the weather and the stars. So if you want a retreat from a busy life, want a romantic but simple getaway, or just want to enjoy nature, La Casita is a the place for that.

Beautiful rustic cottage in astounding location
We went to La Casita after two days at the Hilton in Ponce, where we enjoyed the resort experience by the sea, and after an amazing drive through the mountains came to this cottage in a river gorge in the centre of Puerto Rico. Marlene was a super host. She was attentive but not invasive. She gave us fresh orange juice from her tree that was amazing. The cottage has just the bare necessities - what we needed, but no frills, but it was clean and Marlene provided anything we needed. Be prepared for hot running water only in the shower, and cooking on a hotplate. The setting is incredible. It's peaceful and a place to really relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the forest in central Puerto Rico. There is a restaurant at a resort a short walk up the hill when you don't want to cook. We had two days, and concluded that we'll stay a lot longer next time. Read more
Response from Marlene S. Jones - 04/24/2013
Hello Michael and Erika,
Thanks for leaving feedback, but I just wanted to correct one thing. There is no hotplate, but we do have the BBQ gas grill on the front porch with cooking burners...I didn't want to leave it that we provided a hotplate, because we don't want indoor cooking because of the odors and safety factor.
Our area is lovely and peaceful, and it was so nice to hear that the "setting was incredible".
It was a pleasure to serve you and it would be a delight to see you on your next trip to Puerto Rico.

Beyond belief or comparison
Spectacular week with Marlene in this off the beaten path mountain top treasure. Before we left we heard all the horror stories of bugs, jungle animals, etc. We spent a week there in February and had no bug problems (bugs are all in the coastal beach areas), only jungle animals were the coqui frogs, lizards and birds. Unbelievably beautiful casita, close to all local flavors, the friendliest people I have ever met and a hostess with grace and charm. If you go to the beach, take the bug spray and enjoy the beautiful waters. Don't need bug spray at La Casita at Hacienda de Lago - just a wish to get away and rest and recover from the rest of the world. This is not a luxury resort, this is a private get away where you are "forced" to talk with your mate and may just find something you both have been missing - conversation. A week was not nearly enough at this oasis. Guarantee we will be back and soon.
Morning mountain mist with Marlene's fresh picked papaya
My boyfriend and I like to get away from the busy life, which means avoiding touristy places and aiming for serene experiences. Marlene's cottage has to be the best destination we have found such peace. I'm a morning person so it was heaven to wake up and watch the sun peak out over the mountains and through the mist as I sat on the porch loveseat with a cup of coffee and some fresh papaya that Marlene brought over for us. Marlene is the owner and she is the happiest, kindest and loving person I have ever met. She will get you anything you need, even if you don't ask because she just knows what it takes to make someone feel like at home.
The location is very secluded and requires a vehicle to drive into town for grocery supplies. There is a nice hotel though right across the street that serves breakfast and dinner and has a little bar. We were shown a detour route to the grocery store that led us to a top of a mountain with the best view on the whole island. But this drive is not for the fearful driver, with many sharp blind turns and dogs in the road and a very steep grade. It was so much fun.
I have to say may favorite part of the stay was Marlene, and also the daily walk we took down the road. It was so remote that other than an occasional car, we were alone with the mountains. My only complaint has nothing to do with Marlene or her cabin: we were without a car for a few days due to a rental-car problem. But no worries, as Marlene drove us into town to get some groceries. Once we got a car and our stay was over, we explored the island of PR a bit and I am truly honest when I say that Utuado and the surrounding villages were by far the most beautiful. Moral of the story: you don't need a car to relax and enjoy life.

If you like places like the Hilton, the Radison or the Biltmore.
Don't come here! If you love nature, sounds of the jungle, peace, tranquility, fresh fruit, animals, friendly people, great senery, horses, dogs, beer for $1.50, you may just be very interested in this magical place. The cabin/cottage is perfect. My wife Valerie and I had a great time. We spent a week there and we're content to just hang out. There is plenty to do if you want, or just enjoy the surroundings. Jungle sounds were awesome as we're the fireflies at night. Marlene was a terrific hostess. Fresh squeezed orange juice and papaya in the mornings. Perfect temp. Rain on the tin roof. Remember...less is more!
Wonderful place to relax!
All reviews for La Casita are categorically superior and I agree! Marlene assures that all details are taken care of so that you can truly relax. The house is very comfortable and the spring water is awesome. The welcome watermelon and carambola snack was a pleasant surprise. We had programmed our short 2 night stay at La Casita in the middle of our vacation in order to take a break from the hectic activity laden schedule we had organized. Arriving tired we departed reinvigorated for our remaining days on the island. Thank you Marlene for letting Xio play with Timbledero and for the tasty goat's milk. Our intent is to visit again...maybe staying a little longer so we can enjoy more of the local activities.
This place is a gem and so is Marlene...
The only thing I regret is having taken so long to write a review. I went to Puerto Rico in april 2012 and stayed at Marlene's for two nights
Marlene is the best hostess anyone could ask for. She was very accommodating with my dates and when I arrived to this little corner of heaven she came to greet and welcome me and even had a bottle of rum and some fresh papaya waiting. :-)
Her place is well equipped and clean and absolutely gorgeous. The sound of the waterfall that is literally in the backyard and the nature all around it is majestic. I'm not a fan of bugs, but that's my bad for going to an island, but for the most part, they stayed outside. I had a few geckos or lizards greet me at the window in the morning which was nice. I was totally enchanted by the fireflies at night.
I would love to go back and stay there again, maybe even with a partner. It's very romantic. But also very nice if you're looking for some alone time. It's a great place for self-reflection, which was exactly what I needed and what I got.
Thank you, Marlene!
Peaceful, gorgeous retreat in the Puerto Rican mountains.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for five nights and had a wonderful time. Yes, as others have mentioned, the place is amazing and so is Marlene.
The cottage - a nice, cozy spot on a beautiful property. An intimate space, just right for the type of travelers who are into relaxing in the mountains. A quick drive to tons of amazing natural and historical sites. And if you want to stick near home there's lots to explore. The roads are windy and it gets dark early at night - be sure to plan accordingly. Many eateries in the surrounding area were closed at night and during the week, but there's a kitchen and a hotel restaurant up the street.
Marlene is nearby across the large property and maintains a perfect balance of privacy. Before arrival, she helped form our itinerary, then continued to offer great suggestions, conversation and more while we were there. Terrific host.
What a wonderful place. It was the perfect escape. Definitely will be back at the cottage soon.

The perfect place to just "get away from it all"
This cottage is buried deeep in the Puerto Rican jungle. I have stayed there before and will stay there again. It's so peaceful and adorable.
And Marlene is such a delight. There is a little river to dip your feet in. Her animals are so sweet and friendly. It's the perfect antidote to a hectic schedule. And the next time I am all stressed out I will be back there to recuperate once again.
Definitivamente volveremos!!!

Disconnect from the world and travel back to the wonders of natu
I was surfing on the web for an "off the beaten path" kind of getaway for my wife and I to celebrate our first anniversary together. While seeing the usual vacation spots I came across this small gem and immediately booked it; it seemed far enough from city life, so I figured 'Why not?' After arriving there, I realized this was the place to be! The entire experience was great, from going to sleep to the lullaby of coquis chirping to the fun time we had fishing in the stream, that was about 40-50 feet away! The only regret I have is that we couldn't stay longer! Our hostess, Marlene, is a sweetheart and will tend to any needs. She even bought us a small cake to celebrate our first anniversary! It was an experience that we won't forget, and are looking forward to repeat in the future!
A Slice of Heaven and so much good karma!
When my significant other and I arrived at the cottage we were so pleasantly surprised by this amazing little cottage tucked away so privately on an incredibly beautiful piece of property. The proprietor, Marlene, delivers as promises. The attention to detail, from the well arranged and beautiful hydrangeas, tasteful and restrained decor, assortments of extras like toiletries in the bathroom and fresh milk, filtered water in the frig -- were welcomed touches that reflect Marlene's focus on comfort and a stress-free experience that allows the guest to focus on just "being" there. The cottage is quite simply a destination in itself. We had no interest in leaving the property much and just chilled out to the river sounds, mountain air, wildlife and the amazing environment we shared together. We will be back! Marlene is an incredible host who respects your privacy and yet is there, magically, when you need her. Five Stars!!
Relaxing cottage in a beautiful tropical setting
If you are interested in escaping the city and exploring the beautiful mountain area near Utuado, PR this is a great place to experience nature in a peaceful, relaxing setting. The tropical foliage that surrounds the small, quaint cottage is beautiful. You will hear the sound of the river by day and the coqui frogs at night. The accomodations are a bit rustic but I found them to be clean. The shower is very small and the water temp and pressure are not so good which may make some people uncomfortable but that being said this is a unique, beautiful, natural location that you should not miss out on just because the shower is small. The owner is very nice and she provided me with fresh fruit for breakfast. There are nice sitting areas outside for you to enjoy the natural setting.

Didn't stay long enough!
Jungle lodge is for the traveller who doesn't want a beach/hotel vacation. The cottage is clean and inviting, the garden is beautiful, and the local scenery quite spectacular. Can't decide whether our favorite part was lying in bed listening to the waterfall and river a few yards away, or sitting on the sofa on the porch with a book and glass of wine (and still listening to the river). Our day trips were adventurous and worth the effort of driving the mountains roads, which are not for the faint hearted driver! Were recommended to visit Rio Camuy and Cueva Ventana, both of which were amazing. The service at the cottage was great. Anything you needed, just ask. We had fresh papaya from the garden, local pastries ( guava jelly with cream cheese on a sticky pastry). Who cares about the calories - everyone should try these once! Our only complaint is that it took us a couple of days hit true relaxation mode and we should have stayed longer! Would recommend for anyone who wants to try something different.
Awesome...is the word that describes laying in a regal bed of jungle beauty surrounded by the orchestra of the jungle night, the cool mountain air penetrating my cells, awakening me with a bath of life force that is so available by all that surrounds the sanctuary of Jungle Jane Lodge.
In my exploration of beautiful Boriqua(original name for Puerto Rico) i will return again and again, not only nurtured by the mentioned above but the wonderful caring that the owner Marlene infuses in her welcoming and availibilty to help guide your journey. Awesome!!!
The perfect place to reconnect and relax.
I booked 'the cottage' 9 months before our planned trip. From the start I had a good feeling about Marlene, we seem to have been part of each others journey before we even met! This was a trip to celebrate a 10th anniversary. My husband and I, after much debate, decided on Puerto Rico. Neither of us are tourist crowd type people...I searched and searched for the perfect place...booked and crossed my fingers. The cottage was exactly what we needed. Marlene was so accommodating, making us feel as if we were family just come for a visit. Her little piece of heaven is so naturally balanced that any worry of bugs hassling us never came to be. There was no traffic noise, no neighbor noise, no distracting electronics (unless you sought it...there is WiFi) We slept in, we took little "let's see if we can get lost" adventures...never actually getting lost, but wow was our Lady of the GPS confused! We sat on the deck, cuddled on the love seat, watching the waterfall across the river, birds fishing, lizards hunting...drinking coffee at all hours! I could go on and on about how much I loved it there. If you are looking for something different...something that will be what you want it to be...this is the place. Sit and listen to the rain. Converse with the Coqui. Soak up the beauty of the place with no unwanted distractions.
Our little secret...
Marlene composed a truly amazing symphony of natural wonder with this property. Pictures don't do it any justice and the secret is I think she keeps it that way. But I'll share with you some of the wonderful little surprises. The rest you'll have to find out on your own.
This place is nestled in a lush green tropical valley literally right on a river. The tranquil sound of flowing water constantly in the background, even right in bed while you are sleeping is priceless.
Best surprise is the amazing Marlene, a truly delightful spirit. She lives next to the property in her house with her wonderful array of animals. If you like animals she will gladly introduce her friends with you. We were fortunate enough to meet her newest member of the family, a baby goat named Grace. As my girlfriend would say the cuteness was "squeal worthy".
On the other side, for those not into animals or people for that matter, you definitely will have your peace. She has her animals very well behaved and quiet and is always around when you need her.
Highly recommended for those who want to unplug and get away, couples that enjoy simplicity and nature. Can't wait to come again.
What a caring, sensitive, and nurturing owner of the property an
The jungle lodge was thoughtfully stocked and prepared for guests by Marlene, the delightful owner. She was such an important part in our stay--The lodge itself was beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. Definitely a recommendation!
A divine place of tranquil beauty!
The drive from Old San Juan (Rte 22), up Rte 10 to Utuado, and then to the Jungle Lodge is fast, easy and beautiful. The location, nestled along a river and a waterfall is breathtaking...you feel like you have been transported magically to an Eden all your own. Because it is just one unit, you can have complete peace. The cottage is charming, immaculate, and Marlene a wonderful hostess. There are good locations nearby in very scenic places for great food (if you don't want to cook), but the kitchen is well stocked. I detest chain hotels and the high-rise scene...if you are like me, you will love this place! The spring water is delicious!

Escaping Corp america
It was the most enjoyable place I have ever been and Marlyn is a doll. You can go right out your door lay in a hammock or go fishing 20 steps away. I ask the hostess Marlyn for fishing equipment and in 20 minutes 2 poles where on my porch. You also wake up each morning to sounds of birds, frogs and a waterfall which is directly behind you. This place is amazing. After I left PR I went to Vieques and stayed at the W, the entire time I wish I was back at the Jungle Lodge enjoying the piece and quiet.
I can't wait to go back, 5 days isn't long enough, I could of stayed the entire 2 weeks there. If you need to escape tv, cellphones and enjoy nature, this is your W of hotels.
I will be adding photos of the fish I caught.

Back to nature!
This is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking to break away from everything. The natural beauty all around, the sounds of nature, the simplicity...was so relaxing and peaceful we wished we had more time there. It's also a great location for adventure seekers, with many options close by. My husband went ziplining while my 2 year old and I hung out feeding the horses, goats and chickens and reading books while listening to the waterfall right out our door. Marlene is a wonderful host as well!

Hi Patty and Richard!
I'm glad you enjoy the simple things in life - they are the best; water, clean air, a beautiful atmosphere, and it was, as always, wonderful to have you stay again this year!
I'm very gratified when guests return for a second or third visit - that tells me we're doing something right for them. Thank you for that!
Hospitality is a service, and rewarding, and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to be in it! It's been the best experience of my life, meeting travelers and making them feel at home - in our rainforest. I can't take the credit for the beauty here, that speaks for itself, but it's wonderful to be able to make a cozy and comfortable - and i hope charming stopping place for travelers to rest and relax.
It was fun to introduce you to the locals, and I hope that you find the home of your dreams in Puerto Rico. I can't tell you how happy this place makes me feel. I hope that you will also have that!
Thanks so much for your feedback!

We were in heaven.
The service was great, Marlene is a great host, she received us with a welcoming note. The cottage is charming, cozy, quiet, peaceful, clean, got everything you need to spent a peaceful time, far from city noises.
Quiet days and nights, just the river, cascacade and coquí sounds. If you are looking for a place to be in touch with nature, get a peaceful of mind and be far from technology and city noises, Jungle Jane's Cottage is the place. Marlene Jones is a sweet person, always checking your guest neccesities.
Jungle Jane's Cottage is located in one of the most beautiful places of Utuado, near Caonillas and Dos Bocas Rivers and in the mountains of Utuado, far from everything, near to nature. When you get there, you won't need nothing, just you and your peace of mind.
Love the place and we will repeat our stay.
Pure Tranquility in the PR Mountains
The stay was amazing, loved the place, the surrounding nature, the use of the grill was a huge plus as we did BBQ veggies and meats both nights and even good breakfasts :)
Overall had a great time and I'll definitely come back in the future or next time i'm in PR!
Marlene is warm, welcoming, generous and so much more.
The location could not be nicer; the waterfall and the river are mesmerizing, the grounds so beautiful and peaceful, the bed so nice, soft and cozy, the water so fresh, the fruits and homemade honey so delicious, the cottage so cute and open.We loved the feeling of being away from "civilization as we know it". We were there too short. There is so much to do (fishing, hiking, kayaking...) in the nearby area. We will definitely return some day. In the meantime we will recommend it to all our friends.
The most lovely getaway on a Paradise!
This past weekend I stayed in this beautiful, enchanting, nature site to get away from city's noise. This lovely cottage in Utuado had the most extraordinary eyesight with a beautiful cascade and river that made a peaceful experience for the heart and soul. Definitely would recommend it if you need some time on yourself to help you reconnect with the inner you. Also perfect if you what a perfect place for sharing with your soulmate. Thanks Marlene!

Relaxing, Cozy and Friendly
If you like the natural view of mother earth, this is the place to go. Just getting here was an awesome experience. There's so much to see and visit. You have mountains, river's, restaurants, cave's, lakes and much more.
The place is simply relaxing since you arrive on the spot. We arrived at night but the experience was grateful when you see the cottage with its lights on and the door wide open. Feel the air and in the dark night fall you can see flying insects that light the dark, simply awesome. Inside there's all you need, a bed, bath and kitchenette. Oh and some special treats on the house, thanks.
Our experience was wonderful, we stayed practically all the weekend at the spot. We relaxed and cooked BBQ during the evening and night. With some wine and candles the place was perfect for a great nightfall experience. And during the day the forest offers adventure and of course the river nearby for a cold swim.
I personally recommend this experience to anyone who enjoys a natural environment with good company. Marlene thanks once again for your hospitality and friendship, hope we can visit ya once again.
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this cottage this past week. We enjoyed getting outside of the busy city to see how the local folks live. What a great adventure it was. The cottage was perfect. It was so clean and Marlene provided us with the essentials plus more! She is so friendly ... such a beautiful soul. She will make you feel welcome. She gave us great suggestions on places to see with the directions to get there. (Also the good places to grab something to eat). She is next door (not super close), but close enough that made us feel comfortable. Which was good for me not knowing what to expect. She provided us privacy, but was there for whatever we needed. The scenery is beautiful ... tropical plants are abundant ... a river and waterfall right there ... and of course the mountains. Oh and no mosquitos!! Thank you Marlene! xo Read more

A Little Slice of Jungle Heaven
"My husband and I stayed at Jungle Jane's Jungle Lodge June 11th and 12th. It was wonderful. The lodge is in an extremely remote, picturesque setting and Marlene has made it the perfect couple's retreat. I only wish we would have decided to stay more than just two days. Prior to our visit, Marlene and I chatted on the phone and via e-mails. She was so much fun and we couldn't wait to meet her. She came over our first night, w/ her best friend Rosie, to introduce herself and see if things were to our liking. I told her that other than the mosquitoes (it had just rained and the mosquitoes were enjoying the damp air and fresh blood), we were having a great time. She informed me that bug spray was in the bathroom and suggested I spray it on quickly...she truly had thought of everything to make our stay an enjoyable one. On our 2nd night she came over, we invited her in for a drink and talked a lot more. She invited us over to her home and we gladly accepted. Brett (my husband) and Marlene worked on the computer while Rosie and I played w/ 3 adorable kittens they'd found that morning. We joined Marlene for her evening stroll to the barn to feed the horses and goats then returned to the lodge. There is nothing like the sounds of the jungle lulling you to sleep (coqui, lizards, birds, insects, the river and raindrops on the roof). It is simply wonderful. I awoke in the night to a coqui singing inside the lodge; he was the first coqui I had seen on the trip and I was so excited. Also a little lizard was on Brett's chest watching him sleep; it was hilarious. We awoke our final morning and had a quick bite on the chairs outside enjoying the view one last time. We walked to Marlene's and thanked her for a wonderful time. We took photos and gave big hugs all around then we continued on our journey. Marlene continues to e-mail us and has even called to see how the rest of our travels have gone. I highly recommend Marlene (aka Jungle Jane) and her Jungle Lodge."

Magical, Relaxing Getaway
The cabin and surroundings are beautiful. The perfect getaway to recharge your soul and connect with nature. Marlene is a wonderful hostess!
Quiet Mountain Getaway
We rented a car in San Juan and drove the 1 ½ hours to the cabin. Our GPS worked well in PR on the main roads. Be careful on the backroads. Sometimes the GPS thinks roads connect that do not. The directions she sends with the reservation are very good and we found the place after dark. The last 45 minutes are on a very winding road.
There is a short set of fairly steep steps down to the cabin. The cabin was lit up with candles and there were fresh flowers and rum to greet us. Marlene came over from her house next door and explained how everything worked in the cabin. She is very friendly and truly wants her guests to enjoy themselves. The cabin is essentially one big room. The bathroom has a divider, but no door so this could be awkward if you need your privacy. There is a sink and the shower has hot water. The bed is a queen and quite comfortable. There is no aC, but it is cooler up in the mountains and there is a ceiling fan.
The kitchen area has a microwave, coffee pot, refrigerator with a small freezer and ice cubes, and if I recall correctly a toaster. Marlene stocks the cupboards with some basics...rum, sugar, coffee, popcorn, hot chocolate, creamer, tea, and maybe a surprise snack or two. All you silverware and dishes are also there. Make sure you bring some juices to enjoy the rum. The water is good to drink coming right out of a mountain spring.
There area around the cabin is nicely landscaped and there are lots of flowers. There is a flat area for playing croquette, a couple of hammocks and lounge chairs, and a nice path to the river and some small caves. We really enjoyed relaxing outside the cabin and it is very private...there is only one cabin. We are birdwatchers and were able to see quite a few birds, including the endemic Puerto Rican Flycatcher.
We truly enjoyed our stay at Jungle Jane's and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

an oasis of reconnection and soul healing
This was my second trip to this beautiful oasis,(in one month), the orchestration of the nights melody calling me back to rest in Jungle Janes beautiful cottage, enveloped in a beautiful bed with cotton laced sheets, the sounds, the fresh air, the moisture rocking me into a deep elemental sleep.
Jungle Janes is a sanctuary, a safe haven of grace and comfort where you are immersed in natures greatest gifts...an elixer for our souls! Thankyou Marlene ...your the greatest!
Ill be back... Paloma Terese
Jungle Janes totally worth swinging into.

Jane's Jungle Lodge
What a beautiful location! The sights, sounds and fragrance of the area can be a bit overwhelming at first. The grounds are lush with papaya trees putting forth succulent fruit and the Bamboo beckoning a welcoming wave in the breeze. You don't know what to listen to first, it was exhilarating. The waterfall? No the sound of the coqui frog? No the sound of the locals riding their horses down the street the hooves drumming a musical beat on the ground. Wait was that an owl? Sitting on the porch just closing your eyes will be all you really need in this tranquil paradise but you will get so much more! The air is so fresh that you may just you're your nostrils tingling from joy. Marlene is a very gracious host. The lodge has everything you will need. You don't need to look any further for a place to spend your vacation this is the place.

Fun in the Jungle
We had a great stay at Jungle Janes' lodge - Our hostess had great ideas on what to do, and the fruit was very welcome. Highly recommended
Relaxing Remote Getaway!
My boyfriend and I were looking for something unique and when we saw Jane's Jungle Lodge online, we were sold. And when we arrived, it was better than we thought! Marlene was an amazing hostess and we couldn't have asked for a better place/location to stay!
We'll be back for sure!
Cape Cod, USA
My Girlfriend and I stayed at Jungle Jane's in mid-February of 2011. We had a great time. The lodge is charming and the setting is amazing- the lodge is right in the middle of Puerto Rico's mountain rainforest. You can rest in the hammocks outside the lodge and watch a waterfall as you eat fresh papayas that grow on the nearby trees. We had been in San Juan for a few days before we came to Jungle Jane's, and it really was a treat to have a different experience. If you love the forest, I highly recommend staying at Jungle Jane's.
We spent 3 days at Janes before we went on a cruise. It was alittle further out then we expected, but was enjoyable to stay at. We would do things during the day and it was always nice to come back to the lodge at relax to the peaceful sounds of the jungle. Marlene was a wonderful host had good info and brought us fresh eggs and juice.
New York, NY
My girlfriend and I loved this place. When we were laying on the hammocks, looking out at the waterfall and the towering jungle, listening to the coquis, eating a papaya, it seemed like we were the only people in the entire world, and yet there's a nice restaurant just up the hill! And it was a short and amazingly scenic drive to a lot of natural attractions in the area -- Cueva Ventana, Lago dos Bocas, the observatory, wildlife preserves, etc. The owner is also just delightful, very sweet and helpful and we enjoyed meeting her immensely. I can't wait to come back!

Tropical Vacation Getaway
The cottage was darling and you couldn't ask for better scenery! The river and waterfall right outside the window made for great sleep. This is off the beaten path and you are away from all of the commercialism of a tourist spot. The peace and tranquility of the jungle setting were great! And Marlene brought us fresh fruit and wonderful books to read, too!
My only complaint is that there were not more daylight hours to enjoy it all!
Very Rainy, Cold, Tranquil, but Excellent
Our weekend,Xmas, was very tranquil in a beautiful small cabin decorated simple and with good taste. It was very clean and cozy. Marlene, an excellent hostess; beautiful person. It rained a lot that weekend and it was cold, but yet we loved it, specially with the sound of the waterfall and a full moon. Wow
Jungle Jane's Cottage is a hidden gem!
My husband and I stayed at Jungle Jane's Cottage in Utuado, PR this past December and had just an incredible experience! I am feeling a bit possessive about this location and almost hesitant to spread the word.
There wasn't any blaring advertisement for Jungle Jane's and we actually found out about it by searching through sites like this. We don't stay in hotels - we look for privately owned accommodations, hoping to get a more authentic feel of the location.
We outdid ourselves with Jungle Jane's. From the moment we arrived it was magic. Greeted first by four very loving Satos and then their owner, Marlene, we were lead to the perfect cottage. The large front porch, beautiful furnishings and incredible design of the interior where just what we needed. Papayas on the porch, handmade soaps, thought provoking reading and just plain serenity. We had plans to explore the two days there but just couldn't pull ourselves away from our own front porch...so we didn't.
That first night Marlene, my husband and I did a lot of chatting and admittedly had some great rum supplied by Marlene...both flowed freely. Marlene is amazing and the perfect hostess - never intrusive, very accommodating. We still keep in touch. An animal lover and free-spirit. A highlight of our stay was the day I asked if she would let her horses graze on our side of the fence and her sweet pups wonder freely - just to have those beautiful Paso Finos so near was heaven, having had to give up my horse years ago. Thank you, Marlene, for all - you, your animals, the fresh fruit, the chicken, the conversation, your cottage - you don't know how much we wish we were still there.
So, If you like to step outside your box and are a lover of nature, animals, open-minded people, peacefulness and coqui outside your window, then treat yourself to this cottage...I promise you won't be disappointed.
An amazing Experience
Service- I work out of the us and asked another property in the area where we would be staying a few nights if I could have an online order shipped prior to our arrival and we were told "No. That is not something we normally do." After speaking with Marlene, she was said "yes, no problem" and that we could just pick them up when we arrived. This was a very out-of-the-ordinary request, and it would not have ruined the trip, but the little "yes, no problem, anything I can do to help, etc" we received from her our entire stay, made all the difference in the world. We immediately felt welcomed and comfortable. Every effort was made to ensure we had everything (and more) that we needed.
The cottage has so much character. Everywhere you look there is something unique and beautiful- inside and outside. The porch is great for sitting, reading, relaxing to the sounds of nature all around. She brought the horses over and fed them papayas so we could get pictures and watch them playing.
The location of the cottage is perfect. Only minutes by car from town and right on the river. The waterfall across the river can be heard all day and night. The Coqui can be heard at night or anytime after it has rained. It is like a 24 hour CD of "rain forest sounds".
San Juan, Puerto Rico
We fell in love with the place, so cozy, but with everthing you need. It works magic to connect with you, others and nature, we celebrate our anniversay here and hope to comeback soon for whaterver reason I can find. Thanks Marlene, you are an incredible host, thanks for this amazing place, oh and thanks for introduced me to the soap.

I was looking for some time out of the rat race, and I came upon this remote, wonderful, quiet, tranquil guest house. Right near a creek. Quiet...
Marlene has lots of wonderful animals, even horses. It was just what the doctor ordered for some time away from chaos.

Hawaii of the Caribbean
The cottage is in the mountains surrounded by lush Hawaiian like tropical rain forest. Very calm, peaceful and tranquil setting around the cottage. Designer furnishings and amenities inside. Just outside the window is a river with a waterfall cascading out of the mountain. You have not seen the beauty of the interior of Puerto Rico until you have traveled to the mountains of Utuado. Owner was always available if we needed anything and she gave us some great tips on places to eat, beaches to go to and sight seeing adventures. This was exactly what we were looking for in a getaway. No city lights, star filled skies at night. Makes you not want to go back to the city. A great place to eat that is on a lake just down the road and take a right across the bridge and then a left and you run into Rancho Marina Restaurant. The views down in the valley on the lake were spectacular. Food is awesome and the beer is cold and they make a super passion fruit mojito. As we were driving along the back roads and taking in the scenery, we stopped many times at the little roadside restaurants and drank some beers and ate local food and chatted with the locals. They are very friendly people and love to share stories. We are counting the days to when we will be going back. Next time we will stay for 2 weeks. So much left to do and see. Once you stay here you will want to come back.

Peaceful relaxing Getaway
An absolutely perfect getaway. So beautiful and tranquil with the sounds of the jungle and the sweet taste of the fresh fruit makes it perfect for couples. The sounds of the jungle at night are so relaxing and the coqui sing you to sleep. Marlene is the sweetest host and we loved talking with her and recommendations she made were spot on. The pictures don't do it justice, loved this place!!!
