      Amazing amazing amazing

Left on 09/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Staying at Villa Uzes was an absolute joy. Our group of 10 family members from australia- some couples, some singles, ranging in age from 30 to 83, all had the most amazing week here.

There were very few negatives regarding the stay, which is why I have given 'good' scores rather than 'great', so I will mention them first to get them out of the way quickly. Directions to the house were good but there are two properties in the street with the same number. We arrived, after an 8 hour drive to what we thought was the right one only to find no one there to meet us. I called Christian, our greeter, and in my very basic French explained that we were at the house. He replied that he too was at the house, but we could not see him. Eventually he came walking down the street and we soon realised that we were only a few houses away from the correct address. Problem solved but it was very stressful initially. There was similar confusion on departure when we were asked for more money, when we understood we had paid in full and our documents showed this. Another phone call from me to the booking agency proved me right but the couple who came to see us off were initially very unhappy that we were leaving without paying. I found these situations very frustrating and confronting as the organiser and they should not occur.

The house is simply divine with everything you could possibly want, except sharp knives in the kitchen and toilet paper or soap in the 6 bathrooms. The house has an abundance of cooking and serving ware- truly an incredible amount of every kind of plate, platter, pot, and bowl you could ever imagine, but not a single sharp knife in the place. This was very frustrating especially when trying to cut our freshly purchased baguettes from the beautiful bakery a mere 100 meters from the house, or the meat bought from the wonderful butchery a little further on from the bakery. After our very long hot journey the last thing we wanted was to have to go to the shops and buy the most basic provisions- toilet paper and soap. At $Us8000 a week we fully expected these items to be supplied.

My only other serious complaint was our bed- first bedroom upstairs on the right. The mattress was extremely hard and uncomfortable though no one else had this issue. I think we were just unlucky in the draw and got the hard one. Everyone else was very happy with their (softer) ones.

Where to begin to describe this place- the maison and the town of Uzes? Accompanying photos can not do justice the this grand home with its lush garden and huge pool. And then there is the pool house! There are 5 double bedrooms all with ensuite over 2 levels- 3 upstairs and 2 down, and an extra powder room upstairs. Bathrooms are mostly marble and mostly very large. Some have separate bath and shower, one has only a shower. Most of the house has spectacularly tiled floors- stunning.

My 83 year old step mother stayed with us and she found getting around the house very challenging. There are steep stairs outside out the back but you can walk around the house- takes a while on a walking stick- out the front door to the back garden. There is a reception room, a formal lounge and a formal dining room next to the smallish (narrow) kitchen upstairs. Additionally there is a third level up another internal staircase to private rooms, presumably reserved for the owner. There is a fully equipped large laundry downstairs.

The house is perfectly situated just off the main street of the town very near the main square of the town. The street is very quiet, it's one way and there was little traffic. The house has a very high fence for extra protection. There is a locked gate for privacy and security. It is in walking distance to everywhere- shops, a myriad of restaurants, tourist attractions and cultural sites. The town is magnificent. We did take 2 day trips- one to St Remy de Provence on market day and one to Les Baux de Provence. Both of these are within an hours drive of Uzes and both worth the effort of dragging yourself away from the town and house.

We spent hours swimming in the pool and had drinks every night in the garden before eating in the outdoor dining room most rooms. We did eat out a couple of nights during our stay but it was just so pleasant in and around the house that we were not motivated to go out much.

Each of us had a fantastic time at Villa Uzes. Would highly recommend it to people looking for a similar holiday. I did consider it very expensive but splitting the cost 10 ways make it seem not so much.
