365164 adults and 4 preschoolers go to Provence
Left on 02/01/2012 for a stay in March 2011
Our good friends invited my wife and I and our 3 and 5 year old to take a trip to Provence with them last March. Yes, everyone asked us "Why are you taking the kids with you?" and we started to wonder the same thing as we planned our trip. But we were mostly pleasantly surprised at how nice it is to travel with kids. Everyone was very kind to our high energy group. One of the key ingredients to making this trip work was renting this great home in Provence. The kids played in the yard and ran free when we were home and we had a base for our day trips throughout the area. We were able to wash and line dry our cloths and didn't have to relocate each night and would have paid twice as much to stay in hotels each night. Great meals and great wine are all just minutes away, in town and in near by Beaumes-de-Venise were are favorite places to eat. Going in March had its positives and some negatives. We were lucky with the weather and everywhere we went was less crowded and the restaurants were more patient with the kids as the season had not yet begun. We really felt like we were jumping into the local life of this part of France. We did miss out on some of the beauty of the lush vineyards growing but we had a great time. I would highly recommend staying here.

Carbondale PAWarm reception in cold winter: back to my fave organic vinyard!
Left on 04/17/2011 for a stay in February 2011
Despite the fact that I was in France this time for such a short period of time, I went to Toulouse, Castelnaudary, Carcasssone, Marseilles and Paris in less than 2 weeks. I had to stop at my favorite Gite, at Le Clos de Caveau, to have the Provencal experience, even in winter. It was not as cold as I'd expected and the fog in the morning was impressionistic and beautiful.
I keep coming back to this place I feel very much at home, and am warmly received each time.

Carbondale PAOrganically-oriented and picturesque Provencal property!
Left on 07/20/2010 for a stay in June 2010
This is actually the third time I've stayed at the gites in Le Clos de Caveau, but the first time I stayed in the beautiful new Vineyard House, which is fabulous for a large group.
As a traveller who has been coming to France since the 1970's, I love this part of France the most. I like this town, because it is a great place to relax and plan your tour of the Provence region. I wish I had my family with me for this very short trip taken last month. There is room for two families with kids to be comfortable and the grounds area ensures that you are not on top of each other, including the fact that the house is on various levels. The house encourages kids to play hide-and-seek, it's cool despite the mistral and the heat, it's modern with all electronic conveniences (the kids can watch tv at whim!) and old-fashioned pleasures of reading and walking and hiking among the vines. The pool is wonderful and encourages long siestas after a wholesome meal picked up at the Halles in avignon, the supermarche auchan not too far by car or the large farmers market in the nearby town of Carpentras.
The town of Vacqueyras is tiny. It's a wine-lovers' paradise. This beatifully renovated and clean home is in the middle of an organic vineyard and is an ideal place to use as a base for a tour of the region, with all of its history, including viewing the Roman ruins in Vaison La Romaine, or Nimes or arles, all a short drive away for a simple day trip.
The hosts, Henri and Janet, are incredibly kind and helpful...and they are fantastic in terms of suggesting day tours and things to do in the region. Their English (or Scottish, as you wish, in the case of Janet!) is perfect!
I am planning my trip for 2011 now, so I hope to be able to enjoy this wonderful house again, but next time I will bring along my friends. -

Perfect Vacation Home

I had the pleasure of staying in the Bergines for two weeks. The location is ideal; about a half mile from the town of Vacqueyras which enabled me to walk into town for the newspaper, bread and other small items I needed in the morning. In the evening it is possible to buy fresh vegetables from a nearby farmer. The large house and lovely pool is surrounded by a vineyard and has a lovely terrace with a canopy of vines for shade. There are olive trees nearby and lavender also. The house is tastefully furnished with antiques, art, new appliances, TV and DVD player, large rooms and has been completely renovated but retains the character of the original house. There is a separate room where the TV is located, a large eat-in kitchen with a washer, two lovely bathrooms and four bedrooms.
The terrace is a great place for meals, conversation and enjoying the provencal setting. The owners, Henri and Janet Bungener, have anticipated what a visitor might need and have provided it. They have compiled a large binder for the house which contains information about sightseeing, restaurants, places of interest in the area and trails for hiking. It is a perfect place for a perfect vacation.
