Casa 3Archi is a charming two-room apartment located in the heart of the old town of Varenna, only 50 m from the lake and offers accomodation for up to 4 persons. Consisting of one spacious living room with a sofabed large enough for 1-2 additional guests. From the small and functional kitchen you access an unique little terrace, ideal for dining al fresco above the street arches offering a glimpse of the lake and mountains peeping through the typical side alleys called contradas of the old town. My wife and I stayed at albergo Milano for 6 days last fall, and it was the high point of our month in Italy. We had booked the Tre archi but were upgraded upon arrival to the Casa Rossa apartment. Either apartment is wonderful, but the Casa Rossa has a magnificent view of Lake Como and the mountains beyond from its living room terrace. My wife would have been more than content to spend 6 days sitting and contemplating the view. Varenna is a gem...much like Carmel, Ca was 30 years ago. No need to hurry, just wander the cobblestone streets and take in the beauty. Milan is only an hour away by train if you feel the need for some urban scenery. Or take the ferry around Lake Como. The hosts (Bette and Edigio Mallonne) are warm and helpful. Daily breakfasts are ample and healthy. We ate at their restaurant on our first night (which was good because it closed on Nov. 1 for the season). The food was first-rate, and the service was attentive and friendly. Best we had by far. By the way, around the corner on Via XX Settembre is a little pizza shop run by a fellow named Luigi, who makes great take-away Neapolitan-style pizzas for 4 -5 Euro. Two little grocery stores are up by the town square, and a visit to the Pozzo Gift Shop (just down from the apartment) is well worth your time. In case you haven't guessed, we had a wonderful stay!

Casa 3 archi, this apartment was perfect for our family because we had a small kitchenette, refrigerator, a separate downstairs bedroom for my 5 year old, and space to spread out a little and have room for her to play when we were not on the go. I enjoyed having the small terrace off the kitchen to be able to peek at the lake, sit outdoors, and dry hand washed clothes. Noise was never a problem at any time day or night. My daughter was never disturbed during naps or at night. We slept with the doors and windows closed - perhaps that made a difference (it was unseasonably cool during our visit). This is a small village, and we enjoyed immersing ourselves in the rhythms of daily life - hearing the church bells, overhearing friendly greetings, children playing.
The apartment was very clean, and modern. It was a short walk to the main hotel where we had our morning breakfast out on the beautiful lakefront terrace. I personally would feel a lack of privacy in the main hotel, and liked that we could enjoy its spectacular location and view, and then go back to our apartment.
Everything in town is close to the apartment - a little market, post office, restaurants, gelato. There is a public playground by the ferry landing.
Bettina and her husband are efficient and friendly. Another front desk person (can't recall name) was ok, but could be more approachable and welcoming. Overall, a good experience and we would happily stay in Casa 3 archi again!
