Description from the owner
If you are seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, let us invite you to this unique oceanfront cottage. For the past 27 years we have welcoming guests from around the world to the Boathouse. At the suggestion of some of our guests, we now offer a self-catering option which means no breakfast but coffee, tea, hot chocolate and milk are provided. However, if you would like a continental breakfast, we would be more than happy to oblige.
THE BOATHOUSE is a 450 sq.ft. cottage built on cement pilings right over the calm waters of Brentwood Bay. The Boathouse, as well as the adjacent Bathhouse, have been completely and tastefully...Read more

Left on 05/11/2013 for a stay in May 2013
This was by far the most relaxing vacation we've ever experienced. The Boathouse was just amazing. It's quiet, private and very peaceful. We visited during the first week of May 2013. There were days we never even left the cottage. The Merritt's were the perfect hosts. We were planning our return visit before we ever left. Next time we plan to stay a little longer. We loved the entire experience. It's the perfect escape!

There is a part of us that does not want to share a review because we want to keep this place secret. When we arrived at Jean & Harvey's Boathouse for the last two nights of our honeymoon, we knew instantly that we'd made the best decision. To rewind a bit, our confirmation for our stay was mailed to us via snail mail and there is something really lovely about getting tangible mail containing the most beautiful handwriting confirming details for our stay. Anyway, that same charm carried through.
Not only is the boathouse immaculate, but they have thought of every single thing you could ever need while away from home (flashlights, robes, music, ponchos, umbrellas, folding chairs, calendar of events, etc.) They made us feel like we were the only two people in the world. The space is laid out very smart, has an intriguing history, and provided us with the utmost relaxation and comfort. We had two meals in our little waterside cottage, relaxed in the chairs on the deck, took advantage of the sitting room, took the rowboat to Butchart Gardens, and looked forward to every single interaction with our hosts.
Both mornings we were met with the local paper in a little mailbox near the boathouse. Jean wrote us a great note suggesting that we visit the local farmers market. We had breakfast one of the two days and it was fresh, delicious, and healthy. Jean & Harvey made us feel so special about our first few days of being married and I was shocked to see the guest books with records of how many they have hosted over the years because their energy and hospitality made it feel like we were their first guests.

For us, there really are no words to capture our sense of love and appreciation for the Boathouse.
Our good fortune and fate led us there over 25 years ago! We have returned eight times, the last trip in the fall of 2009. We do not travel frequently, so we save and dream and anticipate our return to the Boathouse because there are few other places we choose to be.
It is a long journey from land locked Colorado back to our little sanctuary on the water. We are drawn back to the "spirit of place”. The subtle glow of light reflecting off of the water and stained glass, the sense of peace, the solace of water gently lapping all around, & the heavenly sunsets bring us back time after time. It is a place of romance and quiet reflection. A small untroubled place in a troubled world.
We have never really been B&B; sort of people. We like quiet, solitude and privacy. For this Jean and Harvey are the best of hosts. They take care of the comforting details and are absolutely sensitive to their guests' space and privacy.
We never tire of rowing the dingy the short distance to Buchart Gardens, or up Todd inlet for a private picnic or of the short walk into Brentwood Bay for lunch and a brew or glass of wine (or two). We feel honored when the seals and otters slide by the dock or the dingy and have a look at us. We love to walk and hike and there is just no better way to spend a quiet romantic day than to take a short drive out to Mt. Work and hike out to Mackenzie Bight to picnic, watch the seals and just reflect.
Sigh... It all comes gently back into focus and we are saving for our return. We have found the Boathouse to be a sanctuary and a gift beyond words.
The Boathouse has become, and always will be a part of us. Some of the best days of our lives have been our days and nights at The Boathouse. Thank you Jean and Harvey for the gift of The Boathouse and for your friendship.
Life is short, so here's to more time at the Boathouse!!!

A definite little peace of heaven !
With the view, the quiet, the otter swimming in the lake, the purple starfish, the delicious breakfast, comfortable bed, fabulous overstuffed chairs in the library, and bath house all to yourself you can't help but be cheerful, happy & relaxed. And the icing on the cake is the incredible hospitality of Jean & Harvey.Response from Harvey Merritt - 03/24/2011

While the water that surrounds the Boathouse can often be as placid as a "lake", it is, in fact, part of Saanich Inlet which is part of the Pacific Ocean.

Left on 03/20/2011 for a stay in July 2010
The Boathouse was the most peaceful vacation stay that we've ever enjoyed. The soft breezes and gentle lapping of the water enhanced the soundest sleep we've enjoyed in years. The place is amazingly secluded, yet convenient to all amenities. But although there are many attractions in the area, we seldom left the sanctity of the Boathouse for the duration of our stay. It was wonderfully relaxing and refreshing, and our hosts were most gracious.

Victoria, BC, CanadaA Perfect Mother and Daughter Weekend Retreat
Left on 03/17/2011 for a stay in October 2010
I still easily find myself daydreaming about returning to The Boathouse. My daughter and I were so immediately effected by the peace and beauty of this little cottage on the water and its magical surroundings. The morning stillness seemed to last all day, always a new gorgeous view, an early mist on the water, a quiet paddle down Todd Inlet before breakfast. Such a lovely breakfast and then settling down in beautiful cozy chairs overlooking it all with a cup of tea and a good book. Slippers and housecoats til noon. Everything perfect, slow and relaxing, nourishing to the soul in everyway. We shared a very special time together here and can't wait til next time. Many thanks to our hosts who have given us such a precious gift. A memory of a lifetime. :) :)

Our annual visit to the Boathouse has been the highlight of our summer for the past ten years. We love the serenity, the scenery and the seaside location. From the cosy library, to the charming bath-house, to the two rocking chairs on the porch, the attention to detail is amazing. The very attentive and helpful owners, Harvey and Jean, make a stay at the Boathouse a truly memorable experience.

Left on 03/11/2011 for a stay in October 2010
The Boathouse B&B; was the highlight of our trip to Vancouver Island and the perfect place to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Upon arrival we found a bottle of champagne, plate of delicious cookies, and a card wishing us a Happy anniversary. Jean and Harvey, owners of the Boathouse, were the most gracious hosts. I would describe the B&B; as secluded, comfy, and charming, My husband and I brought home wonderful memories of rowing to Butchart Gardens, watching the jellyfish, and dancing to Nat King Cole. What stands out the most is the view of Brentwood Bay. I would go back to the Boathouse just to see that view again. Thank you for the gift of wonderful memories.

Left on 03/10/2011 for a stay in August 2010
Over 10 years ago we stumbled on the Boathouse by accident when we were looking for something close to Butchart Gardens. What we found was an outstanding private retreat and gracious hosts that always welcome us back. The location of the Boathouse allows you to view the charm of Brentwood Bay up close and personal and encourages you to slow down and relax. Words fall short when describing what lures us back to the Boathouse but is always feels like the right choice.
