Welcome aboard 'The Dandy HoBo', Victoria's most waterfront accommodation.
Located on our private wharf in a sheltered harbour just past downtown Victoria, our houseboat is perfect for those who like something a little different (and really fun!). Lounge on our rooftop hammock or take the canoe for a paddle to one of Victoria's waterfront brewpubs. Bike or walk the galloping goose trail - a car-free pathway that takes you right downtown, from our doorstep. Swim right off the boat, or maybe tether one of our inner tubes to the dock and float around with a cold beverage!
In the cooler months, the houseboat is a lovely spot to rea...d a book or magazines over a cup of coffee. The boat is equipped with a wood stove, for ultimate coziness. It's also one of the best spots near the city to see local bird and marine life. Eagles, Blue Heron, Raven, Cormerants, geese and ducks all frequent the area, as do otters, seals and mink. There's even a spring herring run and the occasional cutthroat trout caught just off our wharf!
The 'Gorge' as our waterway is known, is a paddlers paradise too, and the training grounds for some of Victoria's top rowers, dragon boaters, kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders. Always lots to see. We have a canoe that is free for guests to use. There are also several board/boat/bike rental outfitters nearby. And yes, you really can paddle downtown or to nearby stores, pubs and restaurants.
The houseboat is equipped with:
One main floor bedroom (double bed with foam mattress)
Loft 'bedroom' (double bed with foam mattress)
Bonus 'sofa with a secret' / hide-a-bed
2-burner propane stove
Espresso maker, bodum, kettle and coffee grinder
Ample dishes, pots and pans and glassware
Small refrigerator, plus a cooler for drinks etc.
Eating nook (seats 4)
Rooftop picnic table
Full running water (hooked up to municipal water - not a tank)
A flushing holding tank toilet (we are environmentally conscious and do not discharge to the ocean. Boat is pumped regularly)
Shower (new hot water tank)
Towels and linens
Wood stove fireplace (and lots of firewood)
Electric space heater
WiFi (doesn't always work 100% for every phone right on the boat. But works 100% from our garden patio)
Sunny rooftop patio
Canoe (with paddles & life jackets)
Street parking (ample, and no restrictions)
The decor of the housboat is simple - not 'luxurious' by any means. But it's clean and fun and has pretty much everything you need to enjoy yourself. The wharf is private, accessible only to oursleves, our houseboat guests and our other tenants (we have a triplex home). Guests of the houseboat may also use our shared patio area and outdoor fire pit.
Location: We're located on the prettiest street in Victoria West, just a 5 min drive to downtown and a 30 min walk. This is a very walkable area, with lots of pathways, parks, bakeries, pubs and coffee shops.
Your hosts love where they live and love to eat, drink and enjoy the outdoors. We'll be happy to play tour guide and suggest restaurants, beaches, activities and the best local secrets.
A few important notes:
Our wharf is at the bottom of a hill, accessed by 50 meters of steps, so sadly the boat is not ideal for those with mobility issues.
This is a houseboat, not a house, so it is subject to the physics of wind and water. If there’s a storm, it might move around a bit and you will hear the wind, rain and sea birds more so than in a house. Just please keep this in mind when deciding if the HoBo is for you ☺
While there is technically enough sleeping space for 6, the boat is really only suitable for 4 adults. If you really want to bring 6, email us and we'll discuss.
Final point - the houseboat stays put on our wharf. You cant actually drive it anywhere ;)
This is an amazing spot. Very unique and lots of fun!Read more

We stayed here over the Labor Day holiday weekend and had a blast. The houseboat is in the Victoria West area of town, so it's about a 30 minute walk to the downtown area but we absolutely loved being a little bit out of town. Also, being right on the water you can enjoy your morning coffee and evening beers up on the roof deck watching animals go by in the water. We saw seals, otters playing onshore, lots of Great Blue Herons, and more. It is a super peaceful place to stay and even though there are houses around and other boats, kayakers/canoes going by, it is still fairly quiet and a fun atmosphere.
The neighborhood is really nice too; lots of cute houses and some great coffee shops within close walking distance. Also there are some beautiful trails right there that will take you all over the Victoria area if you don't want city walking. Be sure to use the canoe to check out the area by water--it is really fun and you will see lots of animals!
The boat has everything you need including kitchen supplies, linens, and some toiletries. We loved the "Mad Men" style décor too :) It is a little rustic so if you are looking for super fancy five star accommodations you may not be completely happy. Also, if you want to be right in the middle of everything downtown this is a little far for that. It can also get a little chilly at night but they did provide lots of cozy blankets so it was no problem. There's a wood stove which will be so cozy to have on in the winter!
But if you want a nature atmosphere, like to watch the world go by on the water, want to prep some of your own meals, and have a car or don't mind a walk into town, this is the place for you!

If you're looking for an adventurous getaway that is not the same old rectangular hotel room, this is the place for you. We totally enjoyed our stay on Neil & Becky's houseboat. It's well maintained and clean. Basic amenities are provided. The primary bedroom is small but comfortable. The boat is down the hill from the house they live in, but is quite secluded by bushes and trees. There is a fabulous patio at the bottom of the hill with chairs/table/chiminea/grill. Oh boy did we love sitting out on the patio in the evening watching the boats and wild life! The patio was in the evening shade, which we preferred to the sun-drenched upper deck of the houseboat. We were visited by a couple harbor seals, a few blue herons, a bald eagle, and the neighbor's cat. Kayaks, paddle boards, and dragon boats just added to the ambiance. It was sooo peaceful. Traffic on the waterway was sparse and mostly non-motorized. We even took the bonus canoe out for a quick jaunt ourselves. It made us feel quite nautical. Loved it!
We do recommend that some form of wheeled transportation be at your beck and call. We walked to the houseboat from town (~40 min), then rented bikes from a near-by place to get around. That turned the trip to town into an easy 10 minute ride. The Galloping Goose trail leads right to the boat's door which made trips easy! There's a water taxi that will get you close to the houseboat, though you'll still need to do some walking. We never used it as our trips and the taxi schedule never matched up, but it looked like fun.
And I can't say enough good things about Neil and Becky's hospitality. They were extremely helpful and made our stay that much more enjoyable. We thank them, thank them, thank them for recommending Lady Marmalade's salmon eggs benedict for breakfast. Omg - so good we went there twice! And the Saltspring Island ale was perfection.
In short, we loved our stay and would definitely stay there again. It made for a great non-traditional vacation!
