Additional Location Information
VIEQUES IS BEACHES! Starting with the Western end of Island, Punta Arenas is the farthest, and one of the prettiest, with great views of the Big Island. The Rompeolas (breakwater), for serious fishing and spectacular sunsets, is also out that way. The most accessible swimming beaches are in the Sun Bay Balneario. It is just east of Esperanza on the south side of the island and has 3 very different beach experiences, one of which is Media Luna, the best toddler beach on earth!. This vast Parques Nacionales area also has the bioluminescent bay. We recommend going on moonless nights with BioBay Conservation, or another organized group. The MOST deserted beaches are all on the East end Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The road to the main beaches is good, but go with 4wheel drive to explore off the beaten path. Other precious experiences on Vieques are losing yourself on long walks through tropical hills and dales, and finding yourself weekend nights on the boardwalk in Esperanza fishing village.

The views from Casa Mamey were absolutely breathtaking! The first morning I arrived with my parents and sisters we saw the most beautiful rainbow over the atlantic, right from the deck. The location is perfect for walking down to the beach or up through hills for a walk with even more beautiful views (and a good workout!). The house itself is open so you get a nice breeze at night and has great living spaces for spending time with family without being on top of each other. (I went with my family of 6 and it was more than enough room.) Also, the house is well equipped with wi-fi -- which keeps everyone entertained -- plus Dvds and games and a full kitchen. Highly recommend if you're looking for a warm atmosphere.

Enjoyed Casa Mamey. Plain Jane. Steep driveway, gave up parking car at house, too steep when driveway wet - left it at top of hill. Purple Beach (tide pool sitting only and beach combing for sea glass) too far to walk comfortably due to steep hills.House had mostly homemade rustic painted furniture. Bedrooms comfortable, not a blind on any window.Kitchen well appointed.Frig worked well. Nice to have 3 baths- large shower heads, water pressure - lite but adequate. Water fine to drink. Wifi, TV, CD worked well. Alarm system obnoxiously set to announce whenever doors opened & closed. Nice view from porch to ocean in the distance, once bugs settled down could sit out in evening breeze. 5 minutes from Isabel Segunda- 20 minutes to good swimmable beaches. Practical, clean house in most respects. There is a washer/dryer. Outside hose to rinse feet. Mosquitos abound in high humidity November.
We bought a swivel floor fan for house - great improvement. Driving in Vieques - pain, narrow roads, large vehicles, cars parked on one side of road. Always have to stop wait for one side to pass and then the other - so heading anywhere inevitably took longer due to "traffic pattern". There were some very nice creative shops in town, but parking was a bear. Groceries easy and had plenty to offer and there are two farm stands for vegetables & fruit. Went most of time to Red Beach to swim. Sol Food at entrance - don't miss. Bieque Eco Trips located next to Sol Food - super friendly, small guide operation - use them over the larger companies !!! -

New Haven, CTComfortable - great place to stay!

We stayed at casa mamey with our 17 month old daughter in late may 2011. the house was perfect for our needs - plenty of space, great deck with nice views down the valley to the water, a small charcoal grill which used a bunch of times, and the kitchen was pretty well stocked for cooking. the property manager gave us some great tips for the island and we had an amazing time trekking around the small, but gorgeous island, finding beautiful beaches all over the place.
we never really found the extensive fruit trees that they advertise as being on the property - and it is not exactly secluded (their are houses that surround it). that said, it is a great spot, with beautiful views and the house was clean and had plenty of amenities (including snorkeling gear, beach toys for our baby, plenty of beach towels, etc). we totally recommend the house and the island - can't wait to go back!
