    Additional Location Information

Vieques is a small island about eight miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico. And although it officially belongs to Puerto Rico, Vieques is geographically part of the Virgin Islands, which lie to the east and south,is roughly 21 miles long and three to five miles wide.

La finca sits in the hills, three miles away from both the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans. Yes it means you will probably want to rent a car to visit our beaches and hidden historical sites, but it also means we are far from the noise and pace of our "beach" towns.

The main activity on Vieques usually involves its remarkable wide open beaches. There are officially over 50 of them. Some are great for snorkeling, some for body surfing, kayaking or beachcombing. Imagine walking for over a mile on white sands not a building in sight with only a handful of other folks at the beach. That's not uncommon on Vieques.

Vieques' climate is moderate with temperatures averaging 83 degrees year round. The island is home to over 120 species of birds, as well as Puerto Rico's famous coqui and other tropical native frogs, with wild horses and cows freely roaming the hills.

The island has 9000 residents, with two main towns: Isabel Segunda, on the north Atlantic side, and Esperanza, a smaller fishing and tourist community, on the southern Caribbean coast.

Spanish is the official language, although English is spoken just about every where. Being a US territory, Vieques has a US Post Office, and the currency is the US dollar. There are several ATM machines in Isabel Segunda.

Until 2003 the US Navy controlled roughly 2/3rd of the island, but they have left it now primarily as either nature preserves or open land. Although some of the former Navy land is restricted, many of our most beautiful public beaches are on this land. This complex history and the diminished availability of private land has kept developers and cruise ships off the island, and helped to keep Vieques relatively undiscovered.

There are all kinds of things to do -- from diving and snorkeling to bone-fishing, and other charters available, as well as kayak rentals and great mountain biking.

Vieques has a great history and is home to the last Spanish fort built in the New World, now a fabulous historical and art museum. There's also the Esperanza Museum and private art galleries. Shopping is relatively minimal, ranging from local handmade pottery and jewelry to paintings, Caribbean clothing, and T-shirts.

All kinds of cuisines are available on Vieques. Dress is very casual and most restaurants are open-air. Offerings range from local seafood and regional specialties to gourmet, vegetarian, and burgers. There is one restaurant within walking distance to the finca.

Groceries are about the same price as in most US cities. Fresh fish is available at the dock in Isabel. We'll point you in the right direction to find everything you need.
