What Past Guests Are Saying
-
joejoejoejoejoe
Boston, MANice house, so so location, crappy policies.
Left on 08/16/2012 for a stay in July 2012
The house itself is quite beautiful. The view of the inlet is great. The house is close to its neighbors but secluded and quiet. The kitchen is nice and well equipped and stocked. The beds are really, really comfortable. The living room and large LCD TV were a nice distraction during the two days and nights it rained.
Those are the pros. For me the cons outweighed them.
First, on the map the house looks close to Vineyard Haven (2 miles) but the first half mile or so is a dirt road which is chock full of deep holes and sand pits. I had hoped to just bike to and from town to use the gym, shop, etc. While we were there is rained very heavily a few times and one of the two ways into and out of the house was washed out. The description of the house says nothing of the dirt road. It's not a huge deal but just know what you are getting before you book the house.
Second, the private beach is rocky and has a small sliver of water without seaweed. Again the description of the house says nothing of this. Oh, and you must bring your own beach towels. You can't provide them for your guests?
Third, we paid $4K for a week and when I pay that much money I expect to be treated better than we were. We arrived a few hours before check in and were denied the chance to drop our bags at the house; we were told the cleaners were there and the owner really doesn't like doing that. When we did arrive at check in time we found that someone turned off the aC so the temperature was - no joke - about 85 degrees inside. We turned on the aC and jacked it up to high but it still took 6 or so hours before the temperature got down to the mid 70's.
Fourth, there is a gas grill but it looks like it was used to cook brontosaurus burgers back in the day. It needs to be replaced. Gross.
Lastly, when you leave the house you are expected to gather up all of your bed clothes, towels, wash all of your dishes, empty the dishwasher and take out your own trash. Why did I pay a $100 cleaning fee? For $4K is it too much to ask that someone empty the dishwasher for us? How are a "guest" if we are expected to clean? If I wanted to do housework I would have stayed at home.
Like I said it's a beautiful home and the location and dirt road isn't that big a deal. But like most bad customer service experiences it all comes down to how you were treated. Had I spent $1K or $2K for the week I would have sucked it up. But we spent twice that and I don't feel like we were treated very well for the money we spent.
