      Wonderful spot!

Left on 05/05/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Perfect location for access to Volcanoes National park. The quality craftmanship and cosy decor of this cottage was even better than imagined. We loved the fresh fruit and muffins - it was like a Bed and Breakfast! This was very good value and we would highly recommend it to couples travelling in this area.

This was our favorite place that we stayed on the island. The cottage is small, but nicely decorated and with all the amenities that we wanted. Everything in the cottage was well maintained and clean. The location is secluded, but great for visiting the park. We would definitely rent again.

      Charming accommodation

Left on 03/29/2013 for a stay in August 2012

Though the place was very hard to find the first time and it is very small, everything about this little cottage was perfect. The room was impeccably clean and all of the amenities are quite nice. The little kitchenette area is very convenient. One very nice aspect of this property is the owner who offers personal service if you want it and goes out of his way to ensure everything is right, including a great breakfast. This is really the way that vacation properties should be operated.

The location, room and affordability are great. The room was very cute. While small, it was very nicely decorated. Comfy bed. The bathroom did have some mold on the shower and the window. The muffins and fruit were a nice touch. The mini-kitchen was an asset. Beautiful, secluded place to star gaze.

Mt. Cottage was well located in Volcano Village -- quiet and a little secluded, but close enough to the part to be able to go back and forth throughout the day. The cottage is a suite over the garage, as shown in the picture, but is separated from the main house. It is well stocked with kitchen goodies and seems modern and clean. I'd definitely rent again.

Charming cottage in the Rain Forest

Left on 03/14/2013 for a stay in February 2013

Mountain cottage is a one room, cozy cottage in the middle of a rain forest - in the small city of Volcano, on the Big island of Hawaii. It was built by the homeowner, obviously with considerable love and care, it is a charming, comfortable and convenient place to plant yourselves (two of you at the most) for a short stay - on the outskirts of Volcano National Park. The surrounding rainforest is absolutely gorgeous, it is a very short drive to the park and a welcoming and comfortable place to come back to after a long day on the crest of the volcanoes. The homeowner lives next door and delivers fresh papaya and home made muffins in the morning. There is a small refrigerator, but no cooking space - so bring in some snacks and make your stay short. The city of Volcano has some interesting restaurants and an wonderful arty cafe - with a gourmet menu and a gift shop (gallery) with original works of local artists. All in all, Mountain cottage is a gem. Drawback - it's really small.
mountain cottage was a wonderful and pleasant surprise

This is indeed an adorably romantic mountain cottage. If you're spending most of your time at volcano, it's perfect for a single or a couple who like each other a lot. There is limited space. It's like living aboard a small boat, but everything you need is there and in a perfect setting.

Left on 01/09/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Cosy little cottage nestled amongst rainforest. Only minutes from Volcano Village and from the national park. The owners have done a great job using space, providing all the mod-cons without cluttering. A big bonus was the fresh muffins on arrival & then bonus muffins the next day to take into the national park for a tasty treat during our hike. Comfy, affordable option near Volcano nationa park.

Left on 10/12/2012 for a stay in September 2012

We absolutely loved this place. The owners did an excellent job with making their space seem cozy and welcoming - packed with great amenities. There were plenty of soft towels, a coffee maker, frig, microwave and tons of reading material. The owners left us muffins and papaya on the bench outside to welcome us to their place. We opened the windows and fell asleep to the sounds of the rain forest. Absolutely wonderful! We highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Volcano. Please note we stayed in the upstairs unit which had stairs that led to the door. It's not far from the restaurants (The Thai restaurant had great food BTW).

We went around the big island staying at various overnight accommodations after each day's adventure. the mountain cottage was definitely 5 stars! reminding us of Coconut Island located in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu Island. Checkin was stress-free! Ray took a walk before sunrise the next day n loved the 'anu and uhiwai he experienced along the way. Dot loved the coziness n charm of the cottage, especially the view of amazing hapu'u fern like trees that were as tall as the 2nd floor cottage with beautiful shade-loving tropical flowers growing beneath them! we definitely would love to stay there again n again. We're still talking about this place to friends n family.

We met the builder who is the owner of a home on the same property and who built this cottage. It was extremely well designed with efficient use of space and my wife and I were both so impressed we came away with several notes about how the space was so efficiently used. It is in a quiet, relaxed area a short drive from Volcano National park. Definitely recommend it!

The "Mountain Cottage" was a really nice room to stay in. It was cozy and clean, but still had space to walk around. Had a sink and microwave as well as plenty of storage! Bathroom and room were clean with views of the rain forest. Owner, James W., was a nice person who provided us with fresh cut Hawaiian papaya and little cupcakes for breakfast the next morning.

Cozy, cozy, cozy! We had an amazing time at the Mountain Cottage. After hiking in the park and eating a delicious dinner at the Keawe Kitchen, we headed back to our fire-lit cozy cottage and listened to the thunder break above the rainforest, which surrounds the cottage! In the morning we had an amazing spread of fresh fruit, muffins and coffee. We enjoyed our stay and recommend this place for any couple looking for a romantic and cozy get away!

      Great Stay!

Left on 01/31/2012 for a stay in January 2012

We stayed there for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon. The cottage was very close to the Volcano State Park, and close to Volcano Village where there are some nice little restaurants. They had all the basic amenities (towels, small fridge, microwave), would have been nice to have a hair dryer too. But I'm sure the owner would have provided it to us if we had asked. The owner greeted us when we got there and provided us with some great info about the area. The cottage was pretty clean; however, we had some bugs at night (which I would think is common since we were pretty out in the wild). The place smelled a little moldy/wet esp. if the windows were closed when it was chilly at night. But once we opened the windows to air it out a bit, it got better. Try to get there before it gets dark or else it might be slightly hard to find without a gps. Overall, it was a pretty comfortable stay and we would definitely come back if we're in the area again!

Cosy cottage close to Volcanoes National Park

Left on 11/30/2011 for a stay in November 2011

We spent 3 nights at Mountain Cottage while we hiked the trails in Volcanoes National Park during the days. The cottage is very well maintained and the owner was very friendly and helpful. The service could be best described as bed & breakfast. There is not really a kitchen in the cottage, just a small fridge and microwave. The owner, however provided us with fresh fruit, muffins and coffee which was a satisfying breakfast. We found the restaurants in Volcano to be very good for dinner. The cottage is quite small, comfortable for a couple but would be cramped for more people.

We had a great stay at the Mountain Cottage. The owner is really welcoming and leaves fresh papaya and muffins each evening for a delicious breakfast the next day. The cottage had everything we needed and then some... very comfortable bed, tv with lots of channels (for the chilly, rainy evenings in!), little wood fire (for those same evenings!), a little kitchen stocked with some goodies from the owner (soda, bottled water, coffee, tea, fresh fruit) and a lovely bathroom. Great stay - we would strongly recommend it!

Left on 11/10/2011 for a stay in September 2011

...not a cottage at all. And, it's located atop a garage. You have to climb a steep, narrow stairway to get there. It is cute/quaint, nice colors throughout. But, the shower is very tiny! Good luck finding it at night, in the dark, cold, wet, fog of Volcano village. I think a proper rate for this room (it is not a cottage) shouldn't be more than $85/night, not the $115 that I paid.
