Kalua-Kona, HawaiiCozy, Comfy Cottage in the Volcano Village Rainforest is Fabulou
Left on 06/07/2013 for a stay in April 2013
We had the most delightful stay in this great cottage. I felt like I was staying in an expensive hotel! (Though not having to pay those prices)The host, Richard is attentive to every detail of comfort and quality. The bed was scrumptiously comfortable with great quality bedding. I appreciated all the attention to detail. Our host was available if we needed anything but otherwise invisible. This cottage is nestled in the midst of a rainforest with giant native ferns and trees. A garden of Eden almost. A wonderful basket of fruit awaited us and the kitchen was outfitted so we could cook our own meals. Yummy waffles and mix provided. What a treat! (there are 3 restaurants minutes away if you want to dine out, all quite good, Kilauea Lodge being our favorite) We were looking for a get away from our lives in Kona and a chance to visit Volcano National Park, hike and explore. This is also minutes away. Art galleries in Volcano Village and in the park were fun. This house is like a art gallery itself with amazing collections from Richard's life as an antique dealer. We would like to make this an annual jaunt. It's more than a home away from home it is so comfy and welcoming!

Left on 04/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013
My freind and I decided to take a 3 day trip to Volcano and I spent some time searching the internet for a nice place to stay while we explored.. Let me start by saying this place is the best kept secret I have found to date! It is off the beaten path, secluded, has a unigue original
feel that took us back in time into tropical rainforest living-- it was simply marvelous! Clean, well furnished and Richard is the best host we could have possibly asked for! I found this place to be a treat, cozy, very inviting, this was conveyed by all the great decor, attention to detail and the "open air feel" it had. Between our excursions we we able to relax in cozy couch in front of the gas fire and watch some fun internet movies on the flat screen. Not only was coffee and fresh fruit was provided but there was a wide array of other
nicities that were available for our use. The cleaning fee was included in the price and this really helped us as we had rented another cottage on the N end of the island and were watching our $ while we we traveling.

Montreal, CanadaThe Best Place to Stay in Volcano
Left on 04/11/2013 for a stay in March 2013
We usually try to stay in home rentals when we travel, and Richard made our stay at Volcano house exceptional in our experience. Richard made us feel like guests in a luxury lodge, without being intruding. He thought of every detail- a fire lit and music playing on our arrival, robes upstairs, flashlight & rain poncho kits for night trips to see Kilauea erupting, and waffle mix for the waffle maker in the kitchen!
We only stayed two nights, but he brought us an enormous bowl of fruit the first day, and very special mochi made in Hilo the second day. He also gave us a newspaper from our city from the 1830's- just because he had it! We wish we could have stayed longer.
Richard's attention to detail is also evident in the restoration and furnishing of his cottage- he is a real craftsman and has a great eye. The cat is also very friendly if you invite her in! If you are a couple or small family looking for a comfortable & inviting place to stay in Volcano, look no further.Response from Richard Hamilton - 04/13/2013

Dear Heather,
Thank you for your kind words, they are much appreciated.
I feel the cottage is imbued with guests happiness and experiences when visiting.
This in a very real way, is what makes a house a home and I thank you for your contributions towards this end on your stay.
Wherever you travel please know that the fire is lit and the light is on to welcome you anytime.
Aloha and best regards to you both from Luli and Myself.

UKWonderful homely stay in Volcano
Left on 04/07/2013 for a stay in February 2013
We (couple and 1 year old daughter) stayed here 6 weeks, so VolcanoHouse became our home away from home. Richard made us feel very welcome and was always there to ensure our stay was super-comfortable. Among other adaptations, he set up a study and baby-proofed the house! The location is great for access to volcano watching in the National Park (10 minute drive to the entrance), and we enjoyed shopping (as early as possible!) at the farmers' market in the village every Sunday morning. The property has something of a tree house feel about it - surrounded by tree ferns and birdsong.

ChinaPerfect cottage for romantic getaway
Left on 01/02/2013 for a stay in December 2012
This cottage is quite, cozy and a labor of love, which gave us a treasured memory of honeymoon. When we walked in, the fireplace lit, the music playing?the act deco, and the warm welcome by Richard just made everything perfect.
What surprised us most is the lovely kitchen, it just has everything you may need to cook your meal. The waffle machine is right there to make our breakfast. And thanks for Richard's patient instruction to make a wonderful waffle. The plate sets are also very beautiful. We really had fun in the kitchen.
Volcanoes National Park is just minutes away, so the cottage is a perfect rest place if you would like to explode Kilauea at night.
Richard, the owner, is always there when you may need help or recommendation for places of interest. We will definitely come back on our next trip to big island.Response from Richard Hamilton - 01/03/2013
Owner
Dear Emma & Xiang,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your review, it is much appreciated.
I also want to thank you both for being such caring guests at the cottage.
You are both wonderful ambassadors from your homeland of China and for me it was a real pleasure to meet both of you.
I will forever remember our Waffle making lesson!, that was fun and provided us all with some good smiles and laughter.
I am glad you mastered the waffle art and were able to start your days in Volcano with fresh baked breakfasts.
It is the perfect early morning Volcano food I think.
You treated the cottage so nicely and I am glad it was able to give back to you both, a special private place for your honeymoon in Volcano.
Where ever you travel please know that the cottage is always there for you with a special "friends discount" and welcome.
I feel very fortunate to have had the pleasure of your company at the cottage.
Thank you Emma and Xiang!

Left on 11/12/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My husband and I stayed here for two nights this past July and would definitely recommend this rental to everyone. It is a beautiful little house and the owner Richard has done a wonderful job restoring and decorating it. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could need and there was even a tropical fruit display waiting for us when we arrived. I hope we will get the chance to visit here again some day.

Kailua-Kona, HICozy Tropical Paradise
Left on 11/10/2012 for a stay in November 2012
The 1200 sq ft cottage was absolutely adorable, very private and located really close to the Volcano National Park entrance. The cottage was spacious, yet cozy because of all the decorator touches (knick knacks, cozy quilts, art work, etc). Everything you could possibly need or want was included in the space. Microwave, toaster oven, frech press coffee maker, waffle maker (even the batter was on hand!) My first attempt at homemade waffles...yum!
Richard was there when we arrived, showed us the house and explained all the gadgets (fireplace, google tv, netflix, pandora, etc.) All the lights are labled throughout the house. He stays on the property in a separate unit when he has guests, but you would never know he was there (unless you needed something). In fact, the stained glass windows in the house, and other decorator touches are placed in such a way that you can't even see the place where he stays. You really feel like you are in your own private paradise. We had a great experience at this rental, would definitely stay again, and would highly recommend it. -

My wife and I stayed at the cottage for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The cottage is very comfortable and beautifully furnished and taken care of. It is nestled in the rainforest and feels very secluded. The location is ideal for exploring Volcano Park and surrounding area.
Richard, our host, also took very good care of us by providing advice about what to see and do in the area and even providing a bowl of fresh fruit on arrival.
I would highly recommend this cottage to a couple looking for a romantic getaway. -

Tokyo, JapanHidden gem - perfect place for a couples to enjoy the Big Island
Left on 07/30/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My fiance (now wife) had a destination wedding in Oahu, but planned a mini-honeymoon on the Big Island. I wanted somewhere near Volcanos National Park that was also a bit secluded. The Volcano area seemed perfect and there were a lot of vacation rentals available. I spent hours searching all the sites and listings and couldn't find the right one, and the ones that seemed okay had already been booked. That was forunate because I happened on Kapa Kahi listing.
It wasn't listed as prominently, or on as many of the other sites that I had used, and possibly because of that I was able to book this place on shorter notice than you could normally get away with for such a fantastic property. From the moment I sent my first inquiry email to Richard I knew that I had made the right choice. He was incredibly helpful and welcoming, offering to pick stuff up for us in advance if we needed it.
We arrived at night, and in the Volcano area its pretty dark so we got a little lost because we couldn't read the road signs, but once we slowed down and followed the detailed instructions we got there with no further issues. At night the lighting and landscaping out the front is gorgeous. My wife litterally gasped at how beautiful it was. During the day its just as good, with all the little decorative touches the owner has put in.
Inside it is just so comfortable with the warm fire going. It was such a nice change in pace from our super busy days on Oahu. This rental and the nearby Kiluea were the highlights of the trip for me. I really wish we had a couple more days to fully enjoy everything on the island, but definitely satisfied with our choice.
Richard the owner was there to give us the tour and was very friendly. He is as available as you want him to be, so if you have questions on the island or recommendations on where to go he can help you out. Or if you just want to be alone and enjoy the peaceful seclusion of Volcano that's possible too.
We definitely will be back (if only we could visit Hawaii more often!). -

Toronto, OntarioWelcoming, quiet and cozy stay
Left on 05/25/2012 for a stay in April 2012
My husband and I stayed there a few nights for our Honeymoon and loved everything about it! Before even arriving we felt welcomed and taken care of. While booking our stay, Richard offered to pick up some food items for us (including gluten free bread for myself) since we were to arrive late at night and wouldn't have a chance to do so ourselves. It was so thoughtful and nice that he was willing to go out of his way. In the end, our arrival time changed so we were actually able to pick up food ourselves but we definitely appreciated the offer. He even sent us different routes to get across the island at night since we were landing in Kona rather than Hilo.
When we arrived the fireplace and jazz music were on, and a huge fruit basket was on the counter. He even had housecoats waiting for us and the dual heated mattress pad was turned on. What a comfy bed! I need quiet when I sleep and there were definitely no issues there! It's in the middle of a rain forest with a tranquil deck in the back where you can sit, relax and listen to the birds in the morning.
The cottage is very cozy with unique decor making it feel special and different from any other place. You don't need to worry about kitchen or household items; everything is there including an endless supply of bottled water. Richard even provided light housekeeping like making the bed and straightening up the kitchen. The flat screen tv was great too with the use of Google TV.
It's about a 30min. drive from Hilo which we didn't mind since we like it quiet to sleep and prefer staying a little outside all the hussle and bussle. With that said, it was only about a 5min drive to Volcano National Park so it was great for day trips to the calderas and the Thurston Lava tube. In Volcano Village there was a great restaurant, Kilauea Lodge Restaurant, with great homemade food with no MSG and a lot of gluten free options.
We loved Hale Kapa Kahi and we would definitely go back!

This cozy and peaceful accommodation is nestled in the rainforest and just minutes away from the entrance gate to Volcanoes National Park. Hale Kapa Kahi was a perfect place for us to stay for a couple of nights. The two-story cottage was spacious, quiet and beautifully decorated and furnished. It really had all the amenities we needed: full-service kitchen, clean and comfortable bedding, fireplace (yes, it's quite handy in the off-season) and even a huge flatscreen television for streaming movies in the evening. We especially appreciated Richard's hospitality, the biggest and best stocked fruit basket that welcomed our arrival and visits from a very beautiful and friendly house cat. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Highly recommended.

I fell in love with the Volcano House the instant we pulled up the driveway. The landscaping was beautiful and wild with a canopy of rainforest trees and flowers, there was even a small waterfall in the front yard. It was such a change from the manicured Hyatt we had left behind in Maui- but a good change. I felt like I was in a dollhouse staying there. When we walked through the door there was jazz playing, fireplace lit, beautiful fresh cut flowers and exotic fruit laid out for us! There was so much attention to detail and so much to look at. Richard, the owner, told us he was a former antique dealer and he apparently used the house for the treasures left over from his work. There was historic artwork and old photography everywhere! My boyfriend and I are really into history and just starting our own art collection ourselves so were thrilled to explore this "Volcano house.” Richard also was great with recommending the best hikes and beaches to go on the island. We literally went to beaches where we were the only ones there! After hiking all day in the Volcano National Park and exploring Hi's black beaches it was great to come home and grill steaks and seafood surrounded by even more beauty. The house is so aesthetically pleasing! The bed was also seriously one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. I definitely have to get the name of those sheets! We had been waking up early everyday of our trip but actually slept in on our first morning there. We normally are more of the ritzy hotel type but staying at the Volcano House is something that I will always remember and absolutely recommend. We will definitely be visiting Hawaii again and plan on being regulars at Richard's Volcano House when we do =)

Lovelier than we thought possible
Left on 01/16/2012 for a stay in December 2011
This beautiful hideaway in Volcano Village, just 1 mile from Volcanoes National Park, was the loveliest 10-year anniversary spot we'd have ever hoped for. We had done our research and felt happy with our decision, but when we arrived to the cozy abode with the gas fireplace/heater already lighted, the gorgeous flower arrangements placed throughout the house, a huge platter of perfect and delicious fruit on the counter, the luxurious linens, a big beautiful bedroom and incredibly comfy bed, a fully furnished kitchen, extraordinary English china, antique furniture throughout, interesting and eclectic artwork -- our jaws dropped and we just kept pinching ourselves in our good fortune. Our host, Richard, was incredibly responsive and did so much to make our stay not only comfortable, but very dear, too. It is obvious that this house is a complete labor of love, and we were so happy there. It was quiet and private and we enjoyed walking the lovely neighborhood, nestled there in the rainforest. So unique, so special, so warm. We hope to go back soon. Thank you, Richard, for helping making our time there so special for us.

Left on 10/10/2011 for a stay in September 2011
This eclectic cottage is a labor of love by the owner and host Richard. He attended to all of our needs before and during our weekend stay. His personal touches made our 10th anniversary vacation such a memorable experience! Hale Kapa Kahi means "Crooked House" in Hawaiian, and there is a purposeful slant to the architecture of the cottage. Everywhere you look in the cottage you will find interesting pieces of art with a story. The kitchen was well stocked for our needs, and I am sure if we hadn't found what we needed, that Richard would have provided. The magnolia and kali ginger were in bloom during our stay, and Richard had beautiful flower arrangements all over the house – so… fragrant (but not overpowering). He also provided amazing fresh fruit for us! The neighborhood is quiet, secluded, and beautiful to walk in. You are under the canopy of the tropical rain forest here, and there are so many beautiful plants and flowers! Supposedly there are frogs, but we never heard them. We slept like babies in the king size bed with the dual control heated mattress pad. I kept mine on the lowest setting, and my husband never even needed to use his. The little gas fireplace kept the cottage cozy in the evenings. You cannot beat the location and the proximity to Volcanoes Park, only one mile. When our travels bring us back to the "Big Island", we will be back to visit Hale Kapa Kahi. Thank You Richard for an amazing place to stay!
