great cottage hidden in the jungle
Left on 04/22/2013 for a stay in March 2013
My wife and I stayed in one of the cottages from March 28-30, 2013. It was very clean and well kept. We had a full kitchen in which to prepare meals, and the location was excellent for exploring the Volcano area as well as the east side of the island. We never met the owner since everything was taken care of via email or phone.

The Menehunue Mansion is the best. It's clean and well
maintained. Everything seemed new. Beautiful place to stay in the middle of the Volcano jungle. It was a great place to be with a 5 year old. Thanks for the fabulous
accommodations! We will stay there again and highly
recommend it. :) Beautiful place.

Well appointed interior. Excellent value for prices especially in Hawaii. We loved the Menehune theme! Just a sweet little place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Menehune Mansion.
It was spotlessly clean, well appointed, quiet, comfortable,
and situated in a nice, tropical location. We were able to
drive to the Volcano National Park easily and quickly from
the cottage, and the drive to and from Hilo was pleasant as
well. The owners were very nice and helpful to work with.
We would highly recommend the cottage to others.

This was one of our favorite places. It is so very clean, quiet and comfortable I would have liked to spend more time there. Five days just was not enough! The owner was great to correspond with answering promptly. Volcano National Park is a very short dirve away and Hilo is not far. The owner has provided info for everything you may need, this was so helpful. The carport was a real bonus. Plan on several days to check out the surrounding area hiking, sites or the orchid farm. have a great stay, we sure did. If you are looking for a quiet get away, this is it!

Left on 03/02/2013 for a stay in February 2013
This place was amazing. It was by far the cleanest place I have ever stayed in. Awesome location about 2 minutes from Volcanos National Park entrance. They have a great guide book to help you decide what to do, where to eat and such. Everything we didn't think to bring with us (umbrellas, etc.) they had there for our use. Electric blanket on the super comfy king sized bed. Stuff for kiddies and/or babies if you needed it. Do yourself a favor and stay here, you won't regret it.
As far as down below and my recommendations on who I would recommend this property to, I feel that even someone who is completey disabled, but traveling with someone to help them carry bags and or help them in and out of the tub would be fine. As far as luxury minded travelers, this is a very nice, very clean place. If you need a bunch of bells and wistles to make you happy you should probably be staying at a resort that will wait on you hand and foot.Response from Leslie and Michael - 03/04/2013
Owner
Our intention with these cottages is to offer an extremely reasonable rate, with out the guest having to put up with 'less than' quality or conditions and in beautiful surroundings. However, if you do want ALL the bells and whistles, please consider our home Maile Treehouse- also listed on this site.

Left on 02/10/2013 for a stay in October 2012
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mahana Mansion. We loved hearing the birds singing all day, and we appreciated the cooler temperatures at that elevation and the lush surroundings. We liked being able to cook for ourselves. The cottage was so comfortable. It was a perfect home base for us to explore Volcanoes National Park (and we went there a lot), and the rest of the island. We did so many wonderful things - saw the phenomenal Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden north of Hilo and the gorgeous black sand beach (and three giant sea turtles) at Punalu'u, and we went in the Kapoho tidepools and the ahalanui thermal pool in the Puna area. We even took a ukulele lesson at the Volcano art Center. Brilliant! What an amazing place.
We loved our stay at Mahana Mansion, and we would gladly stay there again. -

This was an amazing and comfortable stay. Great comfortable, warm and cozy home that absolutely felt like a home away from home! Its stacked with amenities that we loved and the setting was so peaceful and serene. Also the location, 10 minutes drive from Volcano was a great perk as we were driving around with a not-so-car-loving infant! Will definitely return if we are back on Big Island!

Our party of four had a very pleasant 3 day stay -- wish we had booked for a full week. Quality visitor accommodation with personable touches: very clean and thoughtfully equipped. The owner also supplied a notebook of articles and information about things to do in the area. Easy drive to visit Hilo museums and planetarium and farmers market. The Wednesday morning Hawaiiana show at Hilo's 1920's Palace Theatre was the cultural highlight of our month on the Big Island. And whether coming in tired from an all day hike across the lava fields in Volcano Park, or just returning from a walk around the neighborhood's bird rich tree fern and Ohi'a forests, it was always a treat to open the door and be" back home".

Menehune Mansions is the perfect hideaway for honeymooners, or other couples on vacation. We spent the first two nights of our honeymoon in the Hune Mansion and found it to be cozy, comfortable and perfect to meet all of our needs! Leslie was a joy to work with and wisely suggested we stay two nights instead of one to visit the Volcano area. We found everything we needed in the Mansion and found the bed to be very comfortable. We would highly recommend this vacation rental to others who are looking to stay off the beaten path, but near Volcanoes National Park.

What a delightful and peaceful sanctuary for the travel-weary feet! The Menehune Mansion was truly a home away from home. Thank you so much for the clean and comfortable place and also putting together the insightful guest guide. We went out on an adventure at 8 p.m. based on the information from the guidebook, and it was memorable. If we are going to return to the Big Island in the future, we will definitely stay there again.

Wow! What a lovely place! The bathrooms were very clean, the bedrooms comfy and relaxing, and the kitchen was big enough so we can cook our own meals. A truly wonderful place they have there and probably the best of our entire trip. Everything down to the smallest detail was noticed. I should add, it was also very reasonably priced. This property comes with our highest recommendation.

What a cute, private, cozy little place with much aloha. Their thoughtfulness and attention to detail can only say that they strive to make their guest's stay as enjoyable as possible. Amenities were really great. Loved our little Menehunes. Cottage was very clean and neat, better than any hotel. Just the drive alone to the cottage was amazing with Giant Hapu'u Ferns and 'Ohi'a Lehua trees. We had a great time as there were things to do nearby like the volcano (day & night was amazing!), the winery, and the Volcano Village has Kilauea Lodge with an incredible restaurant. The drive down to Hilo was easy and straight, and Pahoa was incredible. I love Volcano and want to live there! Mahalo (Thank you) Sandee and Joanie

The Menehune Mansions was everything we expected and
much more. Leslie has fixed this house with such attention
to detail, cleanliness, and with the traveler's needs in mind.
Her communications were clear/prompt and directions/how
to's were accurate. The book she has compiled has so
much information for everyone's possible level of adventure
from museums to snorkeling - candy to hiking. We spent
three nights at this this property and used it as a launching
point for adventures to Volcano's National Park, Puna, Hilo
and Mauna Kea. How refreshing to have a place to call
home. We will be sharing about this property to all of our
friends because we highly recommend a stay at Menehune

Unbelievable find, worth far more than the rate Leslie is charging. The minute you walk in the serenity of her decor sets the tone for a very peaceful stay. It is private, down a one lane road but only 10 min. or 15 min. to the park. It was easy to pop over to the Jagger museum at night to see the glow from Kilauea's caldera. The propane stove in the corner made the rainy nights very cozy. She has lots of materials available to help guests find attractions. I am telling everyone about our experience, what a wonderful place!

We stayed at the Menehune Mansions in end-May 2012. Everything was great, the kitchen was well equipped, the distance to the volcano National Park was very short (several minutes by car). There is a shop not far away from the house, we could buy milk for our toddler and cook our dinner in the house. We ate the dinner outside in the patio, watching tropical rain falling on trees and big flowers in the garden. Very calm, very peaceful place to get rest after a day of explorations at the Volcano N. Leslie made us feel so special by providing all kinds of baby stuff which really helped cut down on our luggage! We loved sharing our place with the Menhune! The home is beautifully decorated ~ it was hard to leave. We loved living in the middle of a rain forest and coming back to a toasty fireplace after a long day at the Volcano National Park. It was extremely relaxing. The bed was super comfy too!
We would recommend stocking up on all food & supplies in Hilo as the closest store has limited resources. -

This rental was amazing. It's big, comfortable, pretty, and it has everything; the most comfortable bed in the world, a full kitchen and pleasant sitting room, great bathroom. Best of all, Leslie's thought of every little thing you might need, from a very comprehensive guest guide to flashlights in the drawer. It was really a fabulous find, and beautifully clean and well-maintained (also a bargain).

I enjoyed my stay. Leslie was great to work with on all of the details and planning. The house was comfortable, nicely decorated, and clean. The location was very quiet and remote, and surrounded with lush rain forest, which made for nice bird watching from the comfort of the cottage. Yet, it was just at the edge of Volcano, which provided very convenient, nearby access to Volcano National Park. The guest guide book offered excellent recommendation for local sights and restaurants.
It gets surprisingly chilly in this region at night, so the fireplace and electric blankets were very welcomed amenities. It took a little while to warm the place up, but then it was a very cozy cottage. -

Left on 05/28/2012 for a stay in May 2012
We loved our stay at the Menehune Mansions. These cottages were in excellent shape (they appear to be quite new). The owners have put a lot of thought into the amenities. The cottage was extremely clean. I have written positive and negative reviews about cleanliness as I am particular about it, but this place was excellent. We tipped the cleaning person as a result. The location is quiet in a garden setting only a few miles from the entrance to the national park. We were able to drive back at night to see the glowing lava lake. I would highly recommend this accommodation!
The owners also provided a lot of useful information on what to see along the drive to the "mansions" as well as what to do in the area. Very well thought out and helpful. -

The cottage was one of the nicest place I've stayed and the close proximity to the park was excellent (I kept dashing into the park to capture a photo of Kilauea glowing in the night-time). The area reminded me so much of backpacking in the adirondacks Mountains back in NYS.
The owners have done an excellent job in compiling the guide book it was very helpful in deciding what trails
to go on and where to eat in volcano. The village of Volcano is very much like Lake Placid also in the adirondacks.
Menehune mansion is very much a "home away from home" and with a garage for the rental car.

We stayed in the Hune cottage and couldn't have been more pleased. The setting in the rain forest was beautiful and felt so remote even though the town of Volcano was only 5 minutes away and Volcano National Park just a couple of minutes further. The porch setting was a real surprise with its welcoming decor. Upon stepping inside the cottage, we knew the right choice had been made, everything was so clean and beautifully decorated and it had such a warm, cozy feel. Leslie, the owner, certainly has a talent for making her guests feel relaxed and at home. We felt so much respect and appreciation for the love and attention to detail the owners have put into their vacation rentals. When we return to the Big Island, we'll definitely want to stay at Menehune Mansions again.

Left on 03/03/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We stayed three nights in the one bedroom cabin in February while exploring the national park that was only two miles away. The cabin, one of two, was immaculate with the tidy quality of caring owners evident throughout. When we arrived after six days in Kona, we spent our first half hour just sitting in the wicker chairs on the porch and listening to the bird calls, but most of our days were spent hiking the park. If you want a clean, convenient refuge for enjoying the south and southeast side of the island, this will work well. There is a small community in walking distance providing staples and a restaurant, but otherwise you will need transportation. Hilo is forty minutes away.

Friends and I rented both units for only one night and would have loved to have stayed longer. The mansions were better than advertised and were very visitor friendly. All the little details in the finishing shows the owners wish to provide top notch accommodation for their guests. Everything you need is there, and is of excellent quality as well. The only negative for both couples were the beds, a little hard for our liking, but the units are still a great place to stay, and good value.

So delighted to get our first review as we have just opened Feb.... and that our efforts to offer a higher end stay for the price is appreciated. AND in response to 'a little hard for our liking' feedback... we have a NEW high end CUSH KING BED on the way!!!! We ourselves (and the couple others I asked) liked the original bed..., but we have added an amazing topper to it so now it is firm AND soft and I must say, quite yummy!
