Additional Location Information
Hale Pono is located in a tranquil rural area where Tropical Rainforest meets Jungle its way down to the Ocean. Located on a its own 3 acres of a 6 Acre Ohia Forest lot, Hale Pono is very secluded. Its long driveway leads out to a gate on a traditional Hawaii Lava-Rock Track (paved road starts after 0.7 of a mile towards Volcano and, in the other direction, paved road starts after 0.5 of a mile towards the ocean) . The area is very quiet, very green, always in bloom. Fruit trees abound and the neighborhood is friendly and laid back. Ancient ohia forest screens the view of the close-by ocean. Rural Nature Hikes Cycle Rides and awe-inspiring stargazing are right on your doorstep. Within 15 minutes drive there are breathtaking ocean walks, wonderful Panaewa Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Panaewa Annual Rodeo & Stampede, Fuku Bonsai Center, Mac Nut farm tours and Kea'au's tiny Farmer's Market, Hilo (paddle-board, surf, swim in the turquoise ocean with giant turtles, museums, botanical gardens, Imiloa Observatory, waterfalls, eateries, great Farmer's Market) and Pahoa (wonderful, unique old town, great characters, great eateries) are 20 minutes drive, Volcanoes National Park is 25 minutes drive, most attractions (Warm Ponds, Snorkeling, Lava Tree State Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Swimming with wild Spinner Dolphins, Turtles, Black Sand Beach, South Point, Horse-riding in magical Waipio, Rodeos at Parker Ranch, Green Sand Beach, Tree-top Zipline adventures, and more) are between 25-90 minutes drive. There is plenty of parking at Hale Pono - we strongly recommend a 4x4 or bicycle for the road and for widening your scope of adventure - a 4x4 is needed for Mauna Kea stargazing, Waipio Valley, the Green Sand Beach and some of the more spectacular remote beaches. There are places to hire bikes in Hilo and Hale Pono's shuttle can ride you there. Older local 4x4s can be rented for $250 per week and be waiting for you at the airport or delivered to Hale Pono. The Hele-On bus travels the island, can carry 2 bicycles and is only $1 per trip! In general there is plenty of parking at reasonable rates (or free) everywhere on the island. Salisbury, North Carolinaa really beautiful and comfortable accomodation with great hosts
Left on 05/15/2013 for a stay in May 2013
We chose this vacation rental because of the reviews of others. We were not disappointed. Zoe, the host was great. She was very responsive to our needs, and the meals we ordered were wonderful. Halepono was very well stocked with everything that you might need. Our hosts even bought us some local Kona coffee even though there was some other coffee, just to be hospitable. I took my daughter who was graduating from High School. She was thrilled because she appreciated all the little special touches that were done by Zoe. They even gave us a free night as a graduation present for my daughter. We watched videos and did stargazing at night, took walks around the property, etc. It was exceptional.

ShorelineOutstanding in every way
Left on 04/03/2013 for a stay in March 2013
From the first email, this experience was outstanding. An immediate response to our email answering all of our questions in helpful detail and giving us the rates, total, no hidden costs. Payment was easy, via e-invoice, took under 2 minutes! Sent us a great guidebook before our visit, hooked us up with great on-island car rental discounts and came to meet us at the airport the first night when we came in late and had no car. Perfect host, very warm and easy to be with, not to mention funny! She took us to the grocery store, giving us pointers on how produce is different on the island, like milk and bread. Loved the rental, the best of home comforts meets the best of the best hotels' luxury extras, all located in hawaiian nature's peaceful private paradise, under a dramatic starry night-sky or brilliant sunshine blue skies. Pictures do not do it justice or give you any idea of just how spacious, sparkling clean and beautiful it - even smells great, with the subtle scents of tropical flowers and fruit provided. The amenities and supplies are unbelievable, comfy beds and seating, luxury linens and towels, spare razors (sealed), spare kids and adults toothpaste and toothbrushes, every beach towel a different pattern (great for the kids!) baby wash, great quality brownie and cake bake mixes, noodles (rice and wheat!) canned goods, pasta sauce, butter, shredded cheese, salad dressings, relishes, condiments, jams, herbs, spices, ice packs, teas, hot chocolate, lemonade, island-grown coffee, coffee grinder, maker, filters, on and on. I could fill pages with all the great things, all so elegant and tasteful. From the moment you arrive, you don't want to leave, it just gets better and better, the delicious treats, Zoë's perfect five-star cooking and baking, all make you feel more and more welcomed and pampered. How to convey how amazing this rental is? Just doesn't work in words - it is completely outstanding in every way, a wonderful and unique experience of paradise.

LouvainHale Pono is an experience
Left on 03/20/2013 for a stay in March 2013
Hale Pono is an experience. It's as close as a visitor can come to a jungle paradise, and yet it remains a comfortable haven to return to. The route to this secluded place has something of an adventure, yet with a 4WD and with Zoë's detailed instructions it adds to the experience. You may come upon a mother chicken or a peafowl on the road... The cottage is extremely attractive, with a cosy interior, nice beds, and a fully equipped kitchen (no need to bring condiments or dressings, baking soda, etc). If you're lucky with the weather- we were one night!, you can watch the night sky in its full glory in the pitch dark: no light pollution at all. And the twitter of the birds all day long, wow!
We weren't fortunate enough to profit from Zoë's cooking skills (her cooker refused active duty), but she was so kind to leave us a loaf of bread, butter, milk, coffee, eggs and spreads, together with a wealth of exotic fruit for our first morning, which we appreciated very much. She had also been very helpful answering my many questions through the mails before our arrival.
Everything the other reviews raved about, is true and a lot more. I was surprised to find an ointment for minor burns (I had had a small accident with hot steam - no, not from the volcano), high quality shampoo without parabens, oh and the flower arrangements in all the rooms: heavenly!
If we ever return to the Big Island, this will be our home away from home. And for those who hesitate to include the Hilo and Puna side in there traveling plans, I'd say: don't. Even though you may hit the rain (no rain forest without rain) the lush vegetation will make up for it. And Hilo has an interesting town center, a number of very good museums, and exceptional botanical gardens. In Hale Pono you'll find the perfect location for the volcanoes and for the east part of the island. We feel very lucky to have hit this extraordinary spot. -

From the moment I contacted Zoe I felt so comfortable about our decision to rent Hale Pono. You could not wish for a more accommodating host. We received a welcome package before our arrival that included the best guide book for the Big Island. We were met at the airport where she took our luggage and gave us beach towels! We arrived at the house later that day in the dark and she met us at the main road to guide us in. The house was immaculate and every detail of the guests' comfort had been considered. We ordered breakfast for the days we were there and they were amazing...fresh baked scones, the best eggs, an assortment of bacon, sausage. It is centrally located, only 20 minutes from volcano park. In 4 days we covered an amazing amount of the Big Island. Zoe was a wealth of information giving us directions and restaurant suggestions. She recommended a travel agent to contact for our rental car which ended up being significantly less expensive than anything we found on the Internet ...Fyi 4 wheel drive is a definite plus since the road to the house is not paved and it is way fun to drive over the lava fields in a Jeep! We would highly recommend Hale Pono as a vacation rental and hope to be able to return there soon.

no other way to describe out stay...perfect..my wife and i are "professional snorkelers" so we were concerned that the east side would not offer much..wrong..the tidal pools would rank as one of the best ever..dont miss it..plus we had our own private resort..zoe made sure all of our needs were taken care of, great meals, a house that was the best we ever rented, and an attitude that made us feel we were part of the family..if you are looking for the real hawaii, this is it. the other reviews are spot on..we would only add that hilo offered great local shopping, outstanding parks, and people who went out of their way to make us feel welcome..no kidding..snorkel in the morning, volcano visit in the afternoon...perfect

London, UKHands down the best place our family has ever stayed, worldwide.
Left on 02/22/2013 for a stay in February 2013
Wow, just wow! Hands-down the best place we have ever stayed, on the Big Island or anywhere else. If we could give it 6 stars for everything, we would. Hale pono is outstanding, a stunning and peaceful location, in a sunshine micro-climate, an immaculate, well-equipped beautiful home, tasteful and luxuriously comfortable furnishings, everything and anything you could possibly need or want...all great quality and it all works, Wifi was 100%, TV, everything. The kids (6,9,14) loved it. Delicious gourmet food from Zoe, our hostess with the mostest! From our first contact we were so impressed with her excellent service and speedy responses. Zoe sent us the best guidebook for the island as a gift to help plan the vacation and she answered all our queries quickly with helpful hints and detail. We are a globe-trotting family, have visited Hawaii often and we all agree this was the best place we've ever stayed.
Google maps and GPS are useless in this area of Hawaii, Zoe's excellent directions were essential.
In a beautiful rural jungle area, off a winding rock track with wild orchids, flowers, butterflies, dragonflies and birds. It was great to have a 4x4 but the track was much better than Zoe had described.
The home is in its own grounds and has its own private gate and driveway. The only sounds to be heard are those of nature, so wonderfully relaxing. The night skyscape is completely breath-taking, no need to drive to the top of Mauna Kea.
Zoe's cooking rivals the best restaurants on the island and she caters for allergies and special diets with great care.
We settled in and, after our initial 'ooos' and 'ahhhs' of of delighted discoveries, Zoe came to greet us with warmth and hugs all round, a mine of local information and one of those people everyone enjoys being around. Whatever we needed, whenever we needed it, we contacted Zoe and problem solved.
Hale Pono sets the standard for the perfect vacation accommodation. Mahalo Zoe, you and Hale Pono are the best! -

CanadaThe Perfect Hideaway
Left on 01/29/2013 for a stay in January 2013
If you're looking for peaceful surroundings, elegant living space and an abundance of hospitality, then Hawaii's Hale Pono is the place for you. We spent a week recently in this tastefully-decorated bungalow and we were delighted from start to finish. The accommodations are spacious and we lacked for absolutely nothing in terms of furnishings, appliances, kitchen utensils and ... you name it! Anything and everything you might possibly need is there at your fingertips. Located just a short distance from Hilo, Hale Pono sits on a private lot surrounded by lush vegetation. The only sounds we ever heard came from birds and the wind rustling through the trees. The other highlight of our stay was Zoë, as courteous and helpful a host as anyone could hope to find (on the Big Island or anywhere else). Zoë went out of her way to answer all of our questions, provide helpful hints and see to it that everything was to our liking. That last point included two, absolutely delicious full-course meals that she prepared and personally delivered. For a very reasonable fee we enjoyed mouth-watering desserts and local produce cooked to perfection. To sum up, we felt truly spoiled at Hale Pono. Zoë's exceptional attention to detail and her obvious delight at her guests' pleasure make the amenities of this modern villa seem doubly attractive. We would highly recommend this little piece of paradise to anyone traveling to Hawaii. - Ken on 1/29/2013

Though Hale Pono is a little off the beaten path it's completely worth the drive! We stayed here overnight while on a trip to see the Volcano and couldn't have picked a better spot. The charming and cozy home was immaculately clean and filled with all the comforts of home. Zoe, our host, was incredibly warm and greeted us with a freshly baked chocolate/cherry cake and haupia ice cream that we devoured for dessert. The property itself is gorgeous and really a perfect little slice of paradise. Our family lives on the Big Island and even to us it truly felt like a tropical escape! We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone!

Left on 01/09/2013 for a stay in December 2012
A magical experience, from the rough dirt track that, for a very short distance, eases you back to old-style Hawaii, to appreciate the lush beauty of nature, the flowers, trees, birds and butterflies. Following the excellent directions the gate appears and you wind down your own graveled driveway, to a lawned area with palms and flowers, and the house! It's a gem, beautiful fixtures and furniture, well-maintained, sparkling clean, beyond-ample supplies. Kitchen, laundry, bedrooms, bathrooms, lounge, everything goes above and beyond expectations. Glorious flower arrangements everywhere, special sweet and everything you could ever need right there, all the best quality. Perfectly placed between the highways for exploration, the luxurious peace and quiet was bliss to come home to after our daily adventures. Zoe the owner is a gem, too, all the way from her British accent to her warm aloha style, helping us in every way without ever being intrusive. After stargazing in the yard, we slept like babies in the comfortable beds with luxury linens, woke up refreshed to a great shower, soft thick towels, nice soaps, shampoo, conditioner, fresh-ground local coffee, crusty warm homemade bread, bacon, sausages, fresh-laid eggs, and delicious pancakes of Zoë's breakfast. Every detail of our comfort and relaxation was attended to and everything worked! The TV, Blu-Ray, Wifi, Netflix service, appliances, all of it. We advise buying groceries from Zoe's stock, all delicious, just like her cooking! To think, we were nearly put off staying at this home by the Zoe's description of the track outside the property, we are really thankful we went with our better instinct! The only thing we were unhappy about was that we couldn't move in permanently! We already extended our stay and we were sad to fly home and leave the magic of the Big Island and Hale Pono for our next visit. We have already recommended this rental to everyone we know, it's beyond recommendation, you just gotta stay there!

New Castle, PAExcellent Plus +++, Perfect Stay, Incredible Value for Money!
Left on 12/24/2012 for a stay in November 2012
Everything that has been said before and, I cannot emphasize this enough, unbelievably good value for money! Perfect stay, top-quality interior, great location (in itself and for exploring the island), top service, great hospitality, everything you could ever want or need in a vacation home plus on-tap Hawaii Island information, great vehicle rental contacts/advice, complementary top Hawaii guidebook sent to our home to help us plan our trip, showered with Hawaii gifts, fruit, flowers and service. If this was a hotel, we would expect to pay $400-$500 a night for this kind of experience, which I am not sure is available anywhere in the us these days and no hotel has that kind of pantry supplies (ingredients for whole meals, cookie/cake mixes, condiments, herbs, plus more) for the luxury home-style experience. We have visited Hawaii island several times over the years and had good to great vacation home and hotel experiences for much more money. At this place, we had the best vacation experience our family has ever had for under $200 per day plus gourmet-style food at great prices. My wife and daughter rave about how well-equipped and beautifully appointed the house was. We all five of us appreciated the craftsmanship and thought that went into building this home, the refreshing comfort of the beds and furnishings and the fact that everything one needs is there. Somehow they cleaned the driveway, emptied trash and trimmed/watered the plants every day, attended our every need while always respecting our privacy, you wouldn't guess anyone had ever been there. The brief check-in visits from Zoe, the hostess, were perfectly timed and we always enjoyed them, wishing she could stay longer. This was a one in a million vacation experience and, as others have said before me, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Left on 12/14/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Hale Pono is by far the best vacation accommodation we have stayed at. We have been going to the Big Island every summer for 7 years with our 3 kids, staying in over 20 places, including Waikoloa hotels, and this is the first review I have written. This beautiful secluded location feels like your very own retreat and the house was much better appointed than the best hotels we have stayed at on the island! Spotlessly clean, it felt like we were the only people to ever stay there. The beds were beyond comfortable with nice-quality linens and everything you could need in the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and laundry. We loved sitting out on the lanai stargazing or admiring the yard, drinking the local coffee and hot chocolate provided. Everything is excellent quality and well thought out. There were the most beautiful flower arrangements in every room (Zoe checked about allergies and dietary preferences before we arrived, we have none!), and wonderful island gifts for us all. Zoe is quite simply the most perfect host imaginable! Warm, discreet, informative, very understanding, efficient & so friendly - we never wanted her to leave! She is a fabulous cook, put that down to her French mother (we both have one of those, we found out!) and the food was delicious. You really feel that Zoe wants what is right for you, it's not about whether you stay with her or not. We were undecided before we booked - she was very encouraging that we do what was right for us, suggesting other places to stay and helping us with every detail of our trip (get your rental car through her, she has great contacts!). We have never experienced hospitality like it and never stayed in such an amazing, clean, comfortable and beautiful place. To us, Zoe embodies the Spirit of aloha and has a truly Hawaiian heart. We loved the warm weather and the great nature walks in the neighborhood. Are we coming back - you bet!

Where do I even begin? If you’re thinking of staying at Hale Pono, even if you weren’t thinking of staying here, you must. Zoe is the kindest, most accommodating B&B; owner I have ever met. After looking at several places to stay just one night over on the Hilo side of the Big Island I messaged Zoe about the Hale Pono home and within 20 minutes I received a phone call from her. Throughout the entire booking process and leading up to our vacation any question I had was met with a very prompt and detailed answer. Once we arrived in Hawaii, the other mom we were traveling with and I (we brought both babies) got sick, delaying all our plans. I text Zoe to let her know what had happened and she was very sympathetic and assured us we could move our reservation to the next night without a problem. The drive to the house is a bit off the beaten road, but nothing too tricky. Plus, due to the location you really feel like you’re in your own private retreat and the star gazing at night couldn’t be beat. When we finally made it to Hale Pono it was a rough day and we didn’t have time to grocery shop. Zoe to the rescue! Within a few minutes of us arriving she showed up with food from her freezer and pantries to hold us over. As for the accommodations, the house is beautiful. The entire place looks newly renovated with gorgeous details and it is super clean. If you didn’t pack a thing you would do fine in this house! Seriously this place has everything you could need. The kitchen is fully stocked with nice quality knives and pans, it even had a salad spinner and wine glasses, with a fridge full of condiments (it’s so nice not having to buy a whole thing of honey or mustard). There is an entertainment closet with a library of books plus Dvds and a dozen different games. The WiFi internet worked great. There were closet organizers and beach towels. Even the shampoo and conditioner in the showers was nice! Luckily I was smart enough to ask for a homemade breakfast. The next morning we made some of the provided coffee and just before 9am we were greeted by a cheerful Zoe holding a tray with a delicious breakfast. At $5 per person I cannot rave enough about this meal. There were scrambled eggs, toast and Nutella, sausage and bacon, and my favorite were the vanilla oat nut pancakes (I must have that recipe!!). We left that morning with our bellies full and smiles on our faces. All of us wish we could have stayed longer. Overall, our stay could not have been better. I’ve never once taken the time to write a review, until now. We were very impressed with the home and the hospitality was unbeatable!!!

Fort CollinsFive star comfort in a Hawaiian jungle!
Left on 12/05/2012 for a stay in December 2012
This was our 1st experience with airbnb. We selected Zoe's place because we wanted to experience the east side of Hawaii during our stay on the Big Island. Zoe provided everything she promises on her site and much more. The directions to her place were perfect; good thing because my iphone map was not. The property was perfectly maintained, beautiful wood floors, comfortable beds, nice towels, kitchen had all the gadgets to cook wonderful meals including spices, oil, meal items.. She had stocked emergency items like a first aid kit, toothbrushes, deodorant as well as welcome gifts of fruit, chocolates..., gorgeous bouquets in every room. The house is set back a block from a road in the midst of the jungle. Coqui frogs greeted us the evening we arrived. I did not find them a nuisance as I had read about in other reviews. Birds were singing in the morning as we had coffee on the porch. If you're nature lovers like us, this place was the perfect retreat.
We met Zoe the 2nd day. She had been a great resource recommending places to see, things to do after reading my profile of what we liked. We had rented a 4-wheel drive to do some off-roading but Zoe had even offered to help with that. She had coolers stocked in the pantry, ice bags in freezer to use for day trips, water bottles, Ziploc bags... All so convenient and beyond our expectations! We came with our 2 kids, age 23 & 24, and she set up an extra bed in the 2nd bedroom per my earlier request.
In this area, water is hauled in for utility use but not drinking. Zoe supplied us with more than enough bottled water so this was not an inconvenience. We hope to return to the Big Island and would definitely recommend this property!

I can't say enough good things about this house, and Zoe, the owner. First, the house. I didn't have a single complaint about Hale Pono and the accommodations. Zoe has thought of everything. There are nice knives for cutting up the amazing Hawaiian fruit. There is ample silverware, glasses, plates, food storage containers, etc. There are beautiful linens on the beds, a good stock of games and Dvds in the hall closet, and shampoo and conditioner in the bathrooms. This was as close to staying in a well appointed hotel as it is possible to get in a private vacation rental, but with all of the room of a spacious and beautiful home! The property is beautiful, with flowers (wild orchids!) everywhere. It is secluded and devoid of city noises, though nature's symphony plays all night long--quite possibly one of my favorite things about this house! We are an adventuring family, and the physical location was perfect for us as well. The house is closer to Hilo, but still close enough to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that we could easily go there for all or part of a day. In addition, we also drove out to akaka Falls, and Kaimu Beach Park to hike over the lava beds to see active lava flows. On our return to Kona we stopped at Punaluu black sand beach and South Point, both of which would make a lovely, but longer-distance day trip from Hale Pono. Finally, our interactions with Zoe, the owner of Hale Pono were most pleasant. She was helpful before our arrival and easy to communicate with. She was warm and welcoming upon our arrival and very solicitous of our needs. She's really the kind of person you feel comfortable with immediately and wish you could spend an afternoon chatting with. Without exception, our stay at Hale Pono was the single best experience our family has had staying at a vacation rental home. We will be back, and I would recommend this house to anyone! Thanks for the amazing stay!

Where to even begin? Words cannot simply express what a lovely person Zoë is, and what incredible people her husband and daughter are as well. We have been friends now for three years, having met while I lived on the island, and not a day goes by that I am not grateful to have them in my life. Should you choose to stay with them, your heart will be warmed, you will belly-laugh...a lot, your tummy will be filled with yummy, healthy deliciousness, and you will sleep cozily well each night after venturing out to explore the island's magic. Quite simply, you'll never want to leave. I had the pleasure of staying with them for the better part of a month just prior to my leaving Hawai'i, and I certainly did not want to go. (In fact, if you're departing from Northern California, mind fitting me in your luggage?...) Seriously, you couldn't find better people and a more beautiful, welcoming, comfortable home for your visit to the island. And if you're seeking counseling, coaching, ceremony...again, from my heart, you won't find better people...
