      Relaxing and friendly

Left on 04/15/2013 for a stay in April 2013

After arriving from chaos on the North Shore of Oahu it was heavenly to arrive at Bob and Bonnie's well appointed cabin. So clean and comfortable with everything you could need...and more. Bob and Bonnie have thought of everything and their special touches with candles and music as we returned from an outing for dinner was very romantic. Their cabin is in a perfect position to explore the Volcano National Park and Volcano Village provides numerous restaurants if you choose to go out but the kitchen in the cabin is well appointed and a BBQ is available if you decide to stay home and enjoy the ambience of the cottage. Bob and Bonnie are excellent hosts, always checking that we had everything we needed. E.g the milk was running low and when we came home there was more in the fridge. Bob is a very friendly, interesting and helpful person and Bonnie is a well known local artist. We will be recommending their place to anyone we know who plan on visiting Hawaii. Good on ya mate!

It's like walking into your own home...

Left on 03/10/2013 for a stay in February 2013

Bonnie and Bob are a " down to earth" couple living in the back of the property. They own both the "Artist Cottage" and "Country Cottage" ( which are across the street from each other ) We stayed in the "Artist Cottage". We walked in...there was Hawaiian music playing..lights on..fully stocked refrigerator..laptop available for use..etc. We really felt like we walked into someone's home ( not a hotel or condo ) until we realized this was all for us!
The artist Cottage is decorated with lovely artwork provided by the owners. Bonnie and Bob are one of a kind. The location is perfect for a visit to the Volanoes National Park and close to restaurants in Volcano Village. If you are planning a visit to the Park this is a perfect place to stay.

      Charming accomodations, very hospitable owners

Left on 08/13/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights to start our honeymoon and the owners, Bob & Bonnie, were very accommodating and helpful with answering all of our questions. The place feels like home and is located minutes away from the national park. It is at 3,500 feet and in the rainforest so plan accordingly.

I saw another review that says it was damp and they were sick from mold. We didn't experience any of this and there is a gas stove that can be used to heat the place, we didn't need it. My guess is the reviewers had no idea of where they were staying (i.e. a rainforest) and wanted something that had climate control, and should've done their homework if they have allergies to a damp environment. This cottage is very much like an authentic Hawaii experience, and if you want a luxurious resort, go to Kona, or better yet, Waikiki.

If you want a quaint, quiet, authentic place to stay in a rainforest in Hawaii, call Bob and you can't go wrong.

The perfect place to stay when visiting Volcanoes National Park

Left on 04/20/2012 for a stay in April 2012

The artist Cottage (11-3956 Nahelenani Street) is an awesome place to stay on the Big Island, if you want to visit the Volcano area. This Bed & Breakfast is on a private street, in the rainforest, but only about a five minute drive from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. The owners, Bonnie and Robert, are wonderful hosts and attended to our every need. They warmly greeted us when we arrived, had a nice glass of wine waiting for us in the cottage, and gave us excellent advice on places to visit (and avoid) in the area. The cottage is very clean and comfortable, and extremely well-kept. The owners provided breakfast items, assorted beverages and a variety of snacks, which was really convenient. The kitchen is updated, with new appliances, so cooking meals was very easy.

The cottage has internet access, and the owners provide a laptop for guests to use, which was a nice benefit. The place also has a flat screen TV and Satellite service, which our kids loved. We are a family of four (two adults, two teenage boys), and the cottage was a perfect size for us. We will stay at the artist Cottage on our next visit to the Big Island, and highly recommend the place.

Visitors to this part of the Big Island should be prepared for rain, as the Hilo area is one of the rainiest places in the United States (the area is called a “rainforest” for a reason). If you want constant sun, then go to the other side of the island. However, if you want a beautiful place to stay in the rain forest, close to Kilauea, then you should consider this cottage. Our entire stay was brilliant.

terrible, cold and damp, made us sick with allergies due to ?mol

Left on 03/29/2012 for a stay in March 2012

Just to be sure which "artist cottage" we are reviewing, this one is located on 11-3956 Nahelenani Street in Volcano, hi. This is the rainy and cold part of Hawaii. The lack of heat, high level of dampness and condensation in the house were making us sick with symptoms suggestive of mold exposure and other possible allergens in the bedroom/bed (NB symptoms cleared after we moved to another hotel). Our clothes, sheets, shoes were always damp due to the high level of moisture and condensation in the house. We were freezing and told the owner but nothing was done. Consequently, we did not complete our pre-paid stay and an Expedia agent moved us to another location. The owners refused to give us a refund for the night we had to move to another hotel.

The positive ratings on the Trip advisor etc. do not reflect the poor conditions of the house that we encountered on our visit. The contrast between the positive ratings on Trip advisor and the reality that we encountered was shocking. The female owner complained to us about the male owner, and it appears that they were going through relationship problems that affected the operations of the rental. For example, she said that he refused to come and fix the heat in the house and she did not know how to fix it, leaving us to our own devices.

This is a bed and make-your-own breakfast; some food left for us in the house was edible (milk); however, there were open jars and leftovers from previous travelers that were left for us to eat-I wonder if there is any food inspector looking at this! The "juice" was 5% juice sugary drink. The papaya left for us was slightly rotten and the apple was old and shriveled. The fruit was not replaced after the first day of our stay and we were left with packaged and junk food. Garbage was not taken out and towels not replaced even though the owner stated that she would come to clean up. Internet and TV did not work. We paid over $310/night with taxes and additional fees for 2 kids. Certainly not worth it.

We fled the place to another hotel even though we pre-paid and the owner refused to refund us for the time we were not there. In all this trouble, the bright spot was Expedia- thank you Expedia for assisting us on your emergency line.

The artist Cottage is in a beautiful spot close to Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is lovely, and the owners are wonderful, interesting people. I would definitely stay here again. The cottage was clean and very nicely furnished. It has everything you would ever want for a very comfortable stay. The owners have spent a lot of time on the details that make the cottage feel like a home.

The artist's Cottage is a most inviting, refreshing and magical place. Bob and Bonnie are wonderful hosts. They not only provide a warm and cozy place to stay, they ensure that your time on the Big Island is well spent with expert tips on where to go sight seeing and where to eat. The days we spent at the artist Cottage will always be a favorite memory of our Hawaiian vacation. The experience was so unexpected - with a warmth not often found. We definitely plan to stay here the next time we visit the Big Island.

A wonderful cottage to explore the volcano from

Left on 07/15/2011 for a stay in June 2011

My husband and I stayed at The artist Cottage for a week in early June. Bob and Bonnie had thought of everything and the place was extremely well stocked with food, snacks, drinks, and toiletries (in fact my only slight criticism would be that the place is almost too well stocked - there's not a huge amount of space for your own things). The cottage comes with all you could need during your stay: a full kitchen, a washing machine and dryer, a fireplace and a hot tub. It's about 5-10 minutes drive from the volcanoes national park and is the perfect base to from which to explore the volcano and lava flows. Bob and Bonnie were incredibly warm and welcoming people and really gave you the sense that nothing would be too much to ask. I only wish we could have stayed longer to explore more of the Big Island.

Left on 05/04/2011 for a stay in May 2011

My wife and I cannot say enough good things about the artists Cottage in Volcano. Bob and Bonnie were the perfect hosts. Bob greeted us upon our arrival and gave us a quick tour of the place. He was engaged but unobtrusive. When he found out it was our 24th wedding anniversary, he immediately opened a bottle of wine and drank a toast to us. On our second night, he and Bonnie left us a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket with two glasses and a note. Additionally, the cottage provided everything we needed. We didn't even have to go out to dine on the first night. There was plenty of food and drink. The bathroom and bedroom were exceptionally well-stocked. There was a hot tub, plenty of reading material on the area, a fireplace and so many other amenities that we just didn't have the time to take advantage of all of them. If you're going to the volcano, I wouldn't bother with any other place, particularly if you are looking for a comfortable and private accommodation with all the comforts of home.

Within a short drive to everything on the east coast of The Big Island or you can just kick back and enjoy the quiet of their little piece of paradise. Don't worry about anything. The house is stocked with anything and everything. This will be the only place we stay on our trips to the east coast of the Big Island. A big aloha and Mahalo to Bob and Bonnie. Recently stayed at the artist Cottage in Volcano, Hawaii. Hosts Bob and Bonnie were great, helpful if you need any directions, suggestions, restaurants, etc. Located 5 minutes from Volcanoes National Park entrance ($10/week pass) less to the Village restaurants (Kiawe Kitchen is great food but sometimes wait to get in). One bedroom & bath cottage with WiFi internet access. Updated appliances, fully stocked with fresh fruit, cereals/canned goods, coffee, refrig was full for those who may want to cook-in. Covered parking and a lanai where one can have a drink, smoke a cigar and yak with Bob, if one wants to. Artist Cottage (Bonnie the artist) is busy with knick knacks, paintings, menus, books. Perfect for us, will go back in the future.

Our stay at The Cottage when visiting the Volcano on the Big Isl

Left on 10/13/2010 for a stay in May 2010

The hostess Bonnie was very friendly. The one thing that was most suprising to us, however, was that we were actually staying at a cottage that was not necessarily only a rental property, but someone's regular place of residence. The closet in the bedroom did not have any room for us to hang up our own clothes and there were many things in the house that belonged to the owners, so we did not really have a place to put our stuff during our stay; consequently, we kept our clothes in our suitcases. The hostess left a lot of snack type food for us, and she brought us fresh fruit every day - that was nice. We had our privacy and it was a nice place for us, as it was close to the attractions that we wanted to visit on The Big Island. Renters just need to be aware that they are staying at someone's "house" so it is very different than a hotel or a rental condo.

If you're looking for a great spot to relax while exploring Hawai'i's Volcano National Park, look no further! Bob and Bonnie provide a homey environment with 5 star amenities like plush robes and towels, high thread-count sheets, a stocked kitchen, and stellar artwork (painted by Bonnie herself!)

As newlyweds, my husband and I were looking for comfort and convenience as we hiked around the park. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and showed the way inside to the cottage. Wine and chocolates were waiting for us as were a number of other foodstuffs. A computer and internet allowed for us to do lots of planning for the days we were there. Most of all we were very touched by the warmth shown to us by the hosts. Bob and Bonnie worked hard to make our experience very special and they are both caring and down to Earth individuals. Stay here, you won't be disappointed!

This cottage is more charming than the pictures can show. Bob and Bonnie, our hosts, were most welcoming and attentive. They have provided luxurious bed and bath linens and the kitchen is fully equipped with fine cookware, tableware and glassware. One could easily spend many days at this cottage in comfort. There are excellent restaurants nearby and of course Volcano park is very special! The birding and hiking is awesome, not to mention the lava flow. We intend to stay here again.
