Our family had a wonderful stay at the Ohana House - it really felt comfortable. So well stocked and so beautiful to come home to. My kids enjoyed having their space in the loft, and we all loved sitting in the living room gazing out at the rainforest.
It's really close to the park - and we loved the Thai Thai restaurant and the Kilauea Lodge in the village. Renee the housekeeper was a big help when we needed to drop our bags early.
Altogether a perfect stay - much nicer facility than our other vacation rental over in Kona!

More or less exactly as depicted; charming decor in a great location. Well-equipped with books/toys/etc. Competent heating system keeps you warm in chilly Volcano. Beds good, bathrooms good, lovely dining table with a great jungle backdrop.
Two problems:
- The couches aren’t very comfortable. That’s actually a bigger problem than you’d think; when you’ve been hiking over lava for hours, having a comfy place to sit down is sort of a big deal.
- The cooking equipment really needs an update. The stove is acceptable but the burners aren’t hot enough to stir-fry, the barbecue is antiquated and I just about blew my head off, the microwave works fine but sounds like a 747 taking off.
If you’re going to be eating out, no problemo. -

Great location if you intend on touring Volcano National Park over several days. The Volcano National Park in open 24/7, therefor Ohana house is close enough to drive there in the evening to see the crater glowing at night, or to be there for sunrise. It took less than 10mins to drive to the park. This house reminded us of a stay at the cottage as it has a rustic feel about it. It is very spacious for large groups. The one major issue we did have was lack of internet connection, as we relied on the internet to do research. Another thing that we find a little disappointing was the bed in the master bedroom, lets just say we only slept in that bed one night. Some of the kitchen pans also need upgrading, the teflon is scratched and coming off. We were happy to see there was a fresh load of towels sitting in the dryer waiting to great us upon arrival... These are all minor details which can be easily rectified, other that those few things our stay was very pleasant.

Owner
Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of your issues. I'm so sorry your stay at the Ohana House wasn't perfect - we strive to make sure that every guests' needs are taken care of. We wish that you had contacted our caretaker about the internet. We were in the process of switching from DSL (horrible service!) to cable (greatly improved!) and she might have been able to help. I know how important internet is when you're traveling!
Due to your input we replaced the mattress topper on the king bed. Many have commented how comfortable the bed is, so until we heard from you we didn't know we had any issues.
We'll be taking a look at the pots and pans, too.
Again, we're grateful for your feedback, and I'm happy that your stay was "pleasant" and that you had a great time at the national park.

Bedford, New HampshireA little tired and worn
Left on 01/27/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We enjoyed our visit to the Ohana House but felt the house was a little tired and worn down. On the positive side, the house is very close to Volcano National Park and it is very easy to travel to Volcano Village where the thai food is spectacular! It was also pretty easy to find the Ohana house. The directions were very good, as was the other area info the owners sent us. We appreciated that. On the downside, there was a musty smell as soon as we opened the door. The dishes must have been washed but not dried before being put away, as the bowls and pots had pools of water in them. The sheets on 2 of the beds obviously had not been changed, as there were long hairs on them. The furniture in the main room looks lovely in the photo but it is worn and tired looking in person. Overall, it was an average experience.
The owner did contact us about this review and was surprised at our rating of 'average' and our concerns. I appreciated that and while this may have been an unusual situation for Ohana House, I do stand by my rating and concerns. It is what we experienced.Response from Becky Emerson - 02/01/2013
Owner
'm sorry that you were not entirely satisfied with your stay at the Ohana House. We've been renting the house for five years and truly this is the first less-than-glowing review we've received and we take that quite seriously. Since we live on the mainland, we rely on our guests' comments to guide us in the management of the property. Thank you for letting us know where we can improve.
If there has been one area that our guests consistently rave about it's the cleanliness of the home, so your issue of the "obviously unchanged beds" was a surprise. We spoke to our housekeeper and found out that she used a subcontractor before you arrived (and we won't be using her again!) and that there had been a full house of 8 guests who left a mess after using the house as a "party place" -- one of the hazards of renting a vacation home! But unmade-looking beds are unacceptable and if that is the case of course we can't have it happen again!
As you can imagine, all houses in the rainforest have to deal with moisture, and we take extra steps to ensure that the house is comfortable, dry and completely free of mold. We found out that a circuit was blown to the de-humidifier, so we fixed that and future guests can be assured that the home will be dry and welcoming. Again, it might have taken us a while to discover this, so thanks again for telling us.
This is the first comment we've received that the furniture is looking worn. We appreciate your input and we have just had a service come out to clean the upholstery and rugs. We purchased new bedspreads and pillows as well.
We continuously invest in the home to make it one of the best vacation rentals in Volcano, and in the past year we've also purchased a new water catchment tank, on-demand gas water heater, and new gas heater/fireplace to make our guests more comfortable while being more energy efficient.
Thank you again for the input. We hope you had a wonderful Hawaiian vacation. Mahalo. -

Perth, Western AustraliaThe perfect rain forest retreat
Left on 01/05/2013 for a stay in December 2012
The Ohana House is a little gem! After a long flight from australia and four days of touristic madness on Oahu it was a sheer relief to drive down the long drive and find our little 'cottage in the rain forest' waiting for us. It was immaculately clean and well presented and amply equipped with all that the weary traveller could possibly require, including four large bedrooms, two bathrooms (each with a hair dryer) a well stocked pantry, a fridge, washing machine and dryer and a vey helpful printed and illustrated Guidebook produced by the owner which explains in great detail all that you need to know about what to see and where to go on the Big Island generally and in and around Volcano in particular. We spent four idyllic days exploring the rain forest, the volcano and the surrounding coastline. We found the Ohana House to be an ideal base for hiking and trekking in the rain forest and the various restaurants in the nearby village of Volcano were all very welcoming to hungry hikers at the end of a long day and provided an interesting and varied range of fare. Overall the experience of staying in the Ohana House was better by far than anything we could possibly have hoped for and we will forever hold fond memories of our time there. We strongly recommend it to travellers and adventurers of all ages!

The house was clean and very comfortable. The use of a telephone to call home was a big plus. The location so near the National park made it easy to come "home" for lunch and a rest and then head back for another short hike or ranger talk. We also went back to the park at night for activities. Just remember to get groceries in town but getting to Volcano.

The house is large, quiet, and extremely clean, very attractive and well-equipped. Surrounded by thick rainforest foliage, it feels very isolated, yet it is only a couple miles from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We made good use of the new gas fireplace which quickly took the chill off the great room. The owners have anticipated every need, from laundry to outside barbecue to TV to wi-fi internet. We were extremely comfortable; after a day or two it felt like home! When the owners asked how they might improve the house, we were absolutely stumped for a response! It is near perfect! It is very roomy and could easily accommodate three couples plus a few kids.

Group of Eight From Washington State
Washington StateWonderful stay at Ohana House
Left on 10/22/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We are four couples from Washington State who spent two nights in September at the Ohana House. The home is immaculate, beautifully decorated, and very comfortable. A picture window beside the dining room table looks right out into the rain forest. It was also very well stocked with items we might need, including flashlights. (The owner says the flashlights tend to disappear, so bring your own as well.) We would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others. Be sure to arrive at the house before dark because it would be hard to find at night for the first time. We ate one night at the Thai restaurant, which was very good. The other night we barbequed steaks at the house. Even though the grocery stores in Volcano are small, both of them had Big Island steaks in their freezer sections. And they were great. The other restaurants looked good too. Be sure to go back to the Jagger Overlook in the Park after dark to see the orange glow over the active portion of the crater. It was awesome. Take flashlights because there are no lights left on. We were advised to go after 8 so all the tour groups would be gone. We also drove to both ends of the Chain of Craters Road and really enjoyed seeing the vast expanses of various lava flows. Finally, the art gallery next to the visitor center features Big Island artists and is wonderful.

Bristol, United KingdomGreat position for Volcano National Park
Left on 09/04/2011 for a stay in August 2011
The house was clean and comfortable and set in a quiet and green residential area. It is ideally placed for the Volcano National Park and so we were able to make an early start exploring the volcano in the morning and didn't have far to travel after going to see the glow from the volcano at night. The house is also only a short drive from some good local restaurants. (We especially liked the Thai Thai restaurant in Volcano.) There is a lovely view through the big window in the living room of the tropical vegetation in the garden. Communications with the owner were easy and she provided good directions to the house and information about the area. Being a rain forest area, the house does tend to get a bit damp but dehumidifiers are provided if you want them. Also, being a party of 7 adults, sharing one en-suite shower room and a communal shower room was a little inconvenient at times and we did run a bit short of hot water for showering. However, I wouldn't say this was a major problem for a short stay and a smaller party would not have any problems at all.

We decided to visit the volcano during our sojourn on the Big Island. The Ohana House was the perfect place to stay for our family. It was relaxing, cozy, safe, clean, and close to everything in the area of the volcano. We times our stay in Volcano 1/2 way through our vacation, and it was nice to have use of the W/D, making it possible for us to pack only 1/2 of the clothes for the vacation than we would otherwise have had to pack. A great stay, and highly recommended!

Left on 05/20/2011 for a stay in May 2011
Two couples stayed for three nights in early May. Directions to the house were perfect and the bright yellow and green house was welcoming in the rain. The house easily accommodated us with a large kitchen and everything except a dishwasher well laid out. Large windows let in light and the eating area overlooks the lush vegetation. Bedrooms were good size, beds were very comfy and warm, plenty of hot water and the house was spotlessly clean. Even without the wood stove, we were comfortable. It rained each night but the lower elevations were usually sunny all day. Becky made the entire rental process simple and efficient and she was easy to contact. From here we explored the Kilauea Crater, Chain of Craters Road, Lava Tube, Hilo and the Pahoa area. We bought most of our food at Costco just south of the Kona airport after arriving so we did not visit the area eateries. We highly recommend taking a helicopter ride over the area and specifically Paradise Helicopters "Doors Off" flight from Hilo airport. Once in a lifetime experience! Enjoy!

The Ohana House was so warm and inviting - and perfect for our two families (4 adults and 4 younger children). The loft worked great as a bedroom and playroom for the kids, giving the adults our own space in the main living area. The little extras (tea, coffee, pancake mix, laundry soap, etc.) were so appreciated! Thank you for having us - it was a great homebase while exploring Volcano!

The house doesnt feel cavernous but at the same time you are not on top of each other. Great place to stay to explore Volcano National Park and excursions to Puna and the windward side of the island.

There were 7 of us on the trip, a self-guided sort of tour of the Big Island, and the Ohana house was the Perfect home base. They had everything we could possibly need - even mustard for our sandwiches and a cooler for our beach picnic! The house is clean and orderly, warm and inviting (it looks just like the pictures).
I rated Location a 3 star only because it's a bit hard to find in the dark, and the village Volcano pretty much shuts down at 5 pm. For a lovely location very close to the volcanos and non-resort type experience though, it's perfect! -

Ohana House was a great find, even though it was so big we didn't even use one bedroom! Heaps of heaters and a log fire kept us cosy in mid-winter (under 10 degrees Celcius outside) and the kitchen was well appointed. The kids loved the loft and we loved the panoramic window behind the dining table overlooking our own private rainforest. Easy 3-minute drive to the shops and Volcano National Park (I managed 8 visits in 3 days on my weekly pass). Ps. Hope everyone's getting good use of the axe I bought for the firewood!

Located within a mile of the entrance to Volcanoes National Park, this was a perfect vacation home for our group of 7 adults. Too bad we had planned to stay only for a day. With three bedrooms and a loft it accommodated all of us comfortably. We loved the lushness all around and the house was so clean and well kept. Much thanks to Becky, the owner for all her restaurant suggestions and things to do in the area. She also allowed us to check in earlier which was super helpful. Her housekeeper was also really nice. Its a bummer we stayed just for a day... its a perfect house to spend a few days relaxing with your family or with friends. Next time perhaps :-)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ohana House. Becky, the owner was extremely helpful and accommodating prior to our visit. She has a beautiful house that fit all seven of us very comfortably and was well stocked and a great place for us to unwind after a long day at Volcanoes National Park. We spend the evening chilling in the house over beer and taking in the peaceful surrounding. The kitchen was well stocked for us to cook in and we really appreciated the personal touch, a box of chocolates, nuts and pancake mix, all of which we put to good use :-) We wished to had planned to stay longer and certainly hope to be back to enjoy the house again.

We stayed in Ohana House for 2 nights on November 29 and 30, 2010. This house is very closed to National Volcanoes National Park (about 5-10 minutes by driving) and maintained very well. We enjoyed cooking our daily breakfast, seeing the view through windows, or just staying in the house. It is so relaxing! If we have a chance to visit Big Island again, we will definitely stay in Ohana House!
The only thing I will remind is to check-in the house before the sky becomes dark. It is really dark there after sunset and you will need to prepare a flashlight to go out. -

This house was perfect for our extended family holiday. We had a 6 adults and 3 kids (6 yr old + 1.5 year old twins) all fit in perfectly. The house had all the necessary cooking facilities including tea, coffee, sugar, herbs, spices - even cling wrap and paper towel! The sleeping arrangements were perfect and we even had 2 new high chairs and portable cots provided for the twins for free! It was a 5-10 min drive to the Volcano national and we even managed to get a fab lomi lomi massage from the nearby Spa. Unfortunately despite the internet ppl coming out, the wireless was still temperamental. If you like to hear the rain on a tin roof and a cosy fire, this is the place for you. Couldn't hear or see the neighbours and it was a beautiful 3 hr leisurely drive from Waikoloa Resort area where we had been staying. Recommend stocking up on groceries in the main town of Hilo before getting to the house as there is limited choice of groceries/fresh fruit and veg in the Volcano area. The local Thai restaurant and even the pizza place provided good food. Becky provided all the info we needed before our stay and the price was very reasonable - especially now with the high aUD! Highly recommended.

Left on 09/27/2010 for a stay in September 2010
Our extended family of 5 (grandpa, grandma, mom, dad, and baby) stayed happily for two nights at this charming home in a quiet tropical setting. I loved the view of the fern forest with beautiful yellow ginger blooms from the front room and also the coolness of the evening when we made a fire in the iron fireplace. It was clean but did have a slight musty smell that was present. Humidifiers were provided but we did not run them. The kitchen was well outfitted and tea and condiments were provided. We had good email communication with the owner on the mainland and phone contact with the local housekeeper. A crib and books were provided for the baby - very thoughtful! The location was great, close to the tiny town of Volcano and to Volcanoes National Park. We were fortunate to see the glowing red center of the Halema'uma'u crater under a full moon. Go just before sunset and bring warm clothes, even hats and gloves. Don't miss the Sunday Volcano Open market 6:30 - 9:00 a.m. We loved the lunch at the Kilauea Lodge (note the fireplace). The pizza place was overpriced, $20 for a smallish pizza, but the Thai restaurant take-out was excellent. The entrees at the Lava Rock Cafe were good and well priced but the desserts were so-so. (We noted that the park rangers ate lunch at the Kilauea Lodge and dinner at the Lava Rock Cafe.) We would love to come again and would gladly stay in this lovely cottage! The owner offers kamaaina discounts and 10% off to returning guests - Mahalo!

We stayed at the Ohana House for five days and wished we could stay forever. The peaceful setting and surrounding beauty left no doubt we were in paradise. The house has all the comforts of home (and more) and was a calm, restorative home-base to gather our wits and energy for our daily adventures. Not a single amenity has been overlooked--if we needed something, it was already there! Great restaurants are nearby (the Thai Thai Restaurant was authentic and excellent!) and we got some delicious fruit and vegetables at the quaint Farmer’s Market on Sunday. The location was great for getting to Big Island destinations that are north, south, and east, and if you are coming to discover the wonders of Volcanoes National Park, this vacation home can’t be beat. The owners were a dream to work with and went above and beyond to insure our stay was memorable. Mission accomplished!

Left on 05/19/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We traveled to The Big Island in April 2010 and spent two nights in the town of Volcano. The Ohana House was perfect for our stay. We are a family of four (our two children are ages 8 and 11) and the house had plenty of room for all of us, plus a large fully equipped kitchen. The living room/dining room area was very comfortable and nicely decorated. The bedrooms had very comfortable beds and immaculate bathrooms. The house could easy accommodate two families with children since there are three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, plus a loft area. The setting is lovely and the owners were a pleasure to deal with before and after our trip.
The only issue we ran into was that the high speed internet service was not working during our stay. The owner is aware of this and is working on getting it fixed. Otherwise, everything about the house was fabulous, and I'd highly recommend it to others visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. -

We had a wonderful time at Ohana House and in the Volcano National Park area of Hawai'i's Big Island, which is only a 1 mile drive away.
The home was very clean and had a relaxing decor. The views from the windows were of the lush rainforest. At night we enjoyed the smell of the wood burning stove and the sound of rain on the roof.
There are niehgbours but they are spread out so not too close.
We liked that the home uses rainwater that is collected outside. We always had hot water when we needed it.
Also a very kid friendly home with a portable crib and some books and toys. There was lots of open space for the kids to move around. -

The Volcano village is a great place to have dinner after a day filled with activities. We too joined the bandwagon of those who appreciated the food at Thai Thai.
The house itself is very well maintained. The beds were very comfortable and lots of spare sheets, pillows and comforters were available. It tends to get a little cold during nights at Volcano and forseeing this, the house had space heaters provided for every room.
The view of the rainforest at the backyard while sitting at the dinner table was something to die for. The house provided enough privacy while still making us feel safe.
The kitchen came with all amenities - all varieties of cookware and appliances, spice rack, coffee, tea, pop corn etc.
Last but not the least, it was such a pleasure doing business with Becky. She has been so prompt with all of her communications and I found her to be very friendly and helpful.
I would definitely come back and stay here on my next visit to the Big Island.

Lovely was the first thing that came to mind when we arrived at Ohana House. The house is a glow of yellow in a green forest, with two welcoming white rockers on the front porch. Step inside and you find intense blue green walls, tall ceilings and a picture window of forest. Everything is spotless and extremely well appointed. The kitchen has all sorts of things you might need. The bedrooms feature comfy beds. One of the delights of this house is the art and colour. Its location is close enough to volcano and the Park that travel is no problem. My only suggestion is to do what Becky suggests and buy groceries beforehand, as the general store in Volcano won't have much selection.
Becky was extremely helpful as we made our plans. We definitely recommend this place. -

The house is extremely comfortable - large enough for 8 or more and enormous for just the two of us. Set on a rainforest block in Volcano, we were completely undisturbed by neighbours or traffic. We easily found enough to do to occupy a week's stay. Many walks in the national park with visits to see the lava at the coast and drives to other parts of the Big Island. Don't miss the glassblowing in Volcano and enjoy the laid back feel of this village. Pahoa down the hill has a good italian restaurant (on the way from the lava).

From the time we drove up the drive way to the Ohana House we knew we would enjoy our stay. Our home for the next few days was complete for our family of 7. Comfortable and roomy with that Hawaiian charm. Ohana House is nestled in the rainforest with a short drive to the Volcano. I would encourage anyone who would like to explore this side of the island, take your time, and stay at Ohana House.

This is a very nicely decorated home but I don't believe the owners/managers have ever stayed at a vacation rental property. There were many touches that were missing that I normally experience when staying at a vacation rental home. It was really cold in this area and the house never warmed up. There was a wood stove but no indication on where to go for wood. I am from Chicago so I know cold but it was painful to be in this cold house with no way to heat it up. Eventually we found wood at a store but it would have been nice to informaiton listed as to where to go. It would have also been nice to have matches-the needed supply for a fire. The advertisement of this property showed that it came with internet as well as a washer and dryer. None of these worked. We packed lightly so ran out of clean clothes since we couldn't do laundry. It did get fixed on the last day with time for one load but there wasn't any detergent. Again, if the equipment is provided I would expect the tools to go along with it. I called about the internet because I needed to get online and no one returned my call (I even spoke directly to somebody). I also sent a follow up note about an item that we thought we left there and never heard back. We stay at many vacation rentals and have never experienced this before. I was quite disappointed and do not think I recieved a good value for this property.

Owner
Thank you for the feedback, Libby. We're so sorry you had a less-than-perfect stay at the Ohana House. As you can see by other reviews, we've been able to consistently provide excellent service and accommodation to guests in the past.
We take your input very seriously, and will be correcting the oversite of no wood for the wood stove immediately! Also we'll be getting some extra space heaters and blankets for the nights that sometimes get chilly in Volcano.
That the dryer was not fixed until the last day of your visit was unfortunate and we're so very sorry. More distressing to me is that your calls were not returned. We were renting to you through a third party rental agency for this booking. I wish they had given you our phone number so we could have dealt with you directly! We're learning from our mistakes, and can only strive to do better. Whereas this won't help take the sting out of a disappointing experience on your vacation, please know how much we appreciate your feedback so we can ensure future guests don't have the same problems. If you contact us we'll try to make a restitution that makes you happy. Mahalo, Becky & Barrow Emerson -

UtahOhana House - Nice, New, Clean, Great Location, A+
Left on 01/07/2010 for a stay in January 2010
We really enjoyed our stay at Ohana house. It is just minutes from Volcano National Park and could not be a nicer place for a family to stay. We ate dinner New Years eve at the only restaraunt in town (Tiwanese food that was really good), and then the next morning purchased some food at the general store for a great breakfast that we made at Ohana house.
It was nice to stay in a clean and new home. The condo we stayed in on the other side of the island was not so nice, so this was more enjoyable.
I would suggest for anyone who plans on staying there stop beforehand and purchase your groceries in Hilo, or Kona before heading over. The food prices are very expensive there, and as I said earlier - there is only one restaurant and it can get a little pricey if your a family who plans on eating dinner there each night.
We had a great time staying there though and if we return again we will definitily stay at Ohana house again. -

This is not the resort side of the Big Island. If you are looking for predictable sunny days and beaches, then go to the other side. If on the other hand you have an adventurous spirit and want to explore the natural beauty of the east side of the Big island, then Ohana house is a nice base for you and family. The house is in a good location near the park and in the natural wonder of the rainforest. It is located just outside of town in a dispersed residential /vacation rental houses. The house is clean, light, and well kept. It is not glamorous (but that is not what this side of the island is about) but more like a country cottage. Our family of 5 had a great adventure and would stay here again.

In November 2009 we enjoyed two nights at the Ohana House in Volcano,
Hawaii. A perfect retreat for relaxing after a long day exploring Volcanoes
National Park, the house was comfortable, well equipped and spacious. With
2 bathrooms and three bedrooms plus a loft, we had more space than we
needed but it gave our twin 8-year old daughters room for imaginative play
and us space to relax. The kitchen had everything we needed for breakfast
and lunch, but we ate out each night because mom and dad don't cook on
vacation, even in a house with a kitchen.
The rainforest outside was magical and the location so quiet we could hear
a gecko sneeze. The property was like a different world.
The best thing about Ohana House was the location - conveniently remote,
authentic and local. The next best thing was the bed in the master – it was
so comfortable that we longed for it when we arrived at our luxury
oceanfront condo at Mauna Lani. Seriously! The best mattresses, sheets and
pillows on Hawaii are in the master bedroom at Ohana House, and we know
because we stay at the Four Seasons at Hualalai.
The worst thing was the damp air inside and outside of the house. There's
just no getting dry anywhere, but that must be what it's like to live in a
rainforest. We were surprised by the constant state of mustiness and it was
colder than we expected, though there was a wood burning stove that we
did not attempt to use. Still, the wetness did add to the experience and it
was a wonderful place to spend some time in Volcano. -

This was a second visit for us to the `Ohana House at Volcano. Our hosts were absolutely wonderful - taking special effort and time to ensure we would be greeted with comfort and the hospitality that Hawai`i is famously known for. The house was beautifully prepared for our arrival, with every detail in place. Our stay was incredibly special - not a vacation sort of speak, but a rejuvenating experience of cultural immersion through hula and the oral traditions of Hawai`i Island. The setting was perfect for our retreat...surrounded by the dynamics of the nearby Volcanoes National Park, the hapu`u and `ohi`a rainforest. Simply magical and stunningly special. Mahalo Becky for your hospitality and aloha shared with us. We truly felt like "family" had welcomed and hosted us throughout our entire stay!

Our visit to Volcano's Ohana exceeded our expectations and was a great place to stay while visiting the volcano. The home was very clean and spacious and it was fun walking around the neighborhood seeing the tropical foliage. The cut flowers on the table was a really nice touch, and the availability of a few staples in the kitchen was greatly appreciated. My opinion is that it could comfortably sleep more than the 6 people that the website says. Becky was very helpful in answering a question about the wireless.

We had a wonderfully peaceful and comfortable stay with everything we
needed at our fingertips. We appreciated how clean it was and the attention to
detail. We had great Thai food one night and pizza another night in Volcano
Village just minutes away. We were also minutes from Volcano National Park
which was one of the reasons for our visit. We plan to return to Ohana House
again some day soon.

Left on 09/28/2009 for a stay in September 2009
We spent 3 nights at Ohana house in September, 09. There were 3 of us: myself and my two sons (in their 20s) but the house could have held several more people easily. The house was just great. It was large (4 bedrooms) and very nicely equipped (kitchen, bathrooms, sheets, etc). We did lots of cooking although there is supposed to be a good pizza restaurant in Volcano village. The furnishings were great as was the decor. It was quiet and peaceful (well, as peaceful as could be with 2 20-somethings). Don't miss the wonderful mini-rain forest in the back yard.
This is one the nicest rental properties I've ever stayed in. Highly recommended.
The house is very close to the National Park entrance and it was exciting to see the active eruption within the major crater of the park that had been dormant when I last visited 2 years ago. And check to see the status of lava flow viewing from Kalapana (about a 1 hour drive, run by the County, not the National Park). With a short walk over the lava, we were able to see lava flowing into the ocean about 1/2 mile away (bring binoculars). It was especially spectacular after dark but if you go before sunset, you can see it both in the day and night) -

?We didn?t know what to expect after driving up the hill from Hilo and turning off into the housing community near Volcano village. When we found the Ohana House we were pleasantly surprised? and it only got better and better after that! The back of the house opens up to the rainforest, and our rambunctious group of seven family members had lots of room and we felt very secluded and private. My grandkids slept in the loft, and my two sons and daughters-in-law took two bedrooms, and they insisted I take the master suite ? it was my 60th birthday after all! We were so comfortable and felt we had every convenience from home. We appreciated the free long-distance because my cell phone wouldn?t work there! The house is nicely decorated and it feels really clean. We explored the volcano for two days, and took the kids to the waterfalls and snorkeling in Hilo. We can?t wait to return one day. The owner was very easy to deal with and professional, she answered all my many questions before our trip and was very helpful.?

Our visit to Ohana House was perfect! The house is next to a grove of the
most amazing giant tree ferns. It is beautiful and tranquil! The village nearby
had an amazing art gallery and it was so cool to be so close to the Park and
walk out on the caldera in the morning with the mist rising! We were really
comfortable, there was plenty of space for all of us, and the beds were divine!
