Hong KongCozy and relaxing..
Left on 05/08/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Amazing private retreat. We just got married and after staying in Maui for 8-9 days with friends and family, we just needed to get away. Our intent was to just pass through for a couple nights and stay in close proximity near the volcano park, but we were just so blessed to stay here. After a day of hiking and exploring in the park, this treehouse is a place you just look forward towards coming "home" to.
And the jacuzzi tub was just the perfect thing to do after a full day's outing. Leslie did a great job decorating the place and making it feel cozy and comfortable. We were surprisingly pleased with our stay and will highly recommend to our friends. -

One of the highlights of our trip was staying here.
Left on 05/06/2013 for a stay in April 2013
This was easily one the best highlights of our trip. We booked this location off of the Vrbo.com site. It is the second time that we have used the site for a vacation rental. It is hard to know what you are going to get when renting a property off of the internet but this was fabulous. You could tell that the owners took pride in their property, and took great care of it. It was so surrounded by trees that it was like you were out in the middle of nowhere. We enjoyed eating out on the balcony a few times. You should be aware that it is an open design inside and the bedroom is open to common areas upstairs. There are curtains to pull and divide it. Not a big deal just good to know ahead of time. The other part of our group that was staying in the downstairs part would call before they came up just to make sure it was OK. We would not hesitate to stay there again. Highly recommend.

What a wonderful place! We had a great time here- jaccuzi tub and movies on a rainy day, enjoying the birds in the treetops while eating our lunch on the deck, lounging in the garden in the afternoon and reading a book. Besides that, we had fun hiking, driving and viewing in Volcanoes National Park. Their Mission of creating
fabulous memories to take home with us.. was certainly accomplished!

This home was an amazing blessing to our family. It was definitely home away from home. We laughed, ate and just enjoyed relaxing with each other. Sitting in front of the fire was my favorite part of the stay! We also enjoyed our pancake breakfast and having lunch on the lanai. Their love and gift of hospitality shines through this amazing treehouse! They also gave detailed arrival info that was very helpful!

Left on 01/27/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We were scrambling to find accomodations and rental car for last minute visit to the Big Island over the Christmas Holidays and luckily Leslie had a 3 day window for the Maile Treehouse. What a cool experience. Imagine perched in a 2nd story "treehouse" with 360 degree views through continous windows of the tropical rain forest. Now add modern and comfortable furnishings and amenities. Doesn't get any better. My favorite was chilling in the beautifully landscaped backyard. We explored and hiked the park and visited the erupting lava flows during our 3 day stay. Restaurants and markets were close. Lesa and I had a great meal at the Volcano Lodge on New Years Eve then drove to witness the "glow" of active crater in the park. We will definitly be back and the Maile Treehouse will be on our agenda.

Left on 12/05/2012 for a stay in November 2012
Our 3 night stay in the Maile Treehouse was absolutely
superb! The photos on the site do reflect
what the treehouse looks like - it is clean, upscale,
comfortable, and includes all the amenities of a home away
from home. Still, the photos cannot capture the feeling of
magic that is exuded by the place. This was the
type of serene, relaxing environment we craved on our trip.
Yet, the treehouse is only about 1.5 miles from the main
park entrance, making it a perfect hub for days of exploring
the vast acreage at Volcanoes National Park. Thank you
Leslie & Michael for helping to make our trip one for the
books... we are in the process of creating a hardbound
iPhoto book of our journey, with your treehouse included!

Left on 11/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We stayed here at the Maile Treehouse as part of our 3 week honeymoon. What a romantic getaway! We were one of the few couples that actually got to meet Leslie (the owner). She stopped by briefly to drop off supplies. Leslie is an absolute joy and was exactly as I pictured her after seeing this beautiful home with all of the personal touches. We enjoyed the cozy fire with books and wine in the evenings, lunch on the lanai, and the tub! Her Cd's created the most calm and peaceful atmosphere with the trees outside every window. We visited Volcano two years ago and stayed at a horrid little bed and breakfast nearby. The Maile Treehouse is worth every penny! It was so nice to have total privacy.
Thank you Leslie for this beautiful home and great start to our marriage. -

What a joy a to be here. They have provided so much thoughtful detail and comfort. We loved all of the little touches inside and out. This was a great jumping off place for the Volcano, beaches and Waipio Valley. We had read Hilo residents were "snooty" and we found nothing but smiles and friendliness. What a beautiful place to spend a week. Maile Treehouse will come highly recommended.

Staying at the Maile Treehouse was a wonderful adventure. Sometimes the pictures you see when you are deciding to book a place make it look nicer than it really is. That's not the case with the Maile Treehouse. It's exactly the way the pictures show.
It was such a nice contrast to the resorts in Kona. It was like staying at someone's home, and the care that the owner's put into every last detail is very evident.

If you're trying to decide whether it's worth it to go to the east side of the island, it's worth it! We've been to volcano fields before, including Mt. St. Helens, and we weren't sure how much we'd enjoy Volcano Natl Park, but Chain of Craters Road still blew us away, even in the rain and fog! It's incredible -- take it all the way to the ocean! And plan your trip well in advance so you can book the Maile Treehouse!
What a magical place! We knew from reading the other good reviews that it would be special, but wow! Leslie and Michael have truly thought of every little thing! It rains a lot in Volcano, but when you wake up here you don't care what the weather looks like. You just want to hang out here all day. We stayed here for two days before heading over to the west side of the island to get married, and this was the perfect place to relax and spend time together before our wedding. It was like staying at the home of a kindred spirit. We slept soundly in an amazingly comfy bed, ate breakfast in the treetops, showered to the sounds of the birds (there's a window in the shower!), and there was even a guitar for my fiance to serenade me with. We were sorry we couldn't stay longer! Together, we've stayed in probably 10-20 B&Bs; over the years, and this is our favorite, bar none. -

We really enjoyed the Maile Treehouse...we found that the open concept design and the huge windows in every room made the experience very inviting and welcoming. As an architect want-to-be--I thought the design of the space was exceptional. It also seemed like every detail had been thought of. My husband loved having a guitar available, and we used the binoculars to watch the birds. We felt lucky to be so close to Volcano National Park. Other visitors from the Big Island barely had time to enjoy the Park before heading back to their accomodations. With the location of the Maile Treehouse, we were just steps away and took long and leisurely hikes and participated in ranger lectures. We also were able to return to the Park after dark to see the glowing lava in the crater.

Very private but close to the Volcanoes park. The fireplace was a wonderful addition as it does get cool on that side of the island. This is one of the best, if not the best properties we have ever stayed at. It is a one in a million with hand-crafted attention to detail throughout the unit. It has a selectcomfort bed and a jetted soaking tub. Leslie and Michael say they want to create a "feeling" and wow, they sure do. You are in the middle of a rainforest, up in the trees with the birds and privacy on all sides. This couple has gone to great pains to design the interior and exterior grounds. On top of it all, you are 5 minutes from the entrance to hi Volcanoes Natl Park.

My husband, another couple, and I enjoyed a 3-night stay here after participating in the Honolulu Marathon. As soon as we entered the house, we were all completely blown away and ecstatic to be staying in such a gorgeous accommodation. The ambiance is so cozy, comforting, and inviting... it was like going to your favorite aunt & Uncle's cabin - but in the tropics of Hawaii! I couldn't believe my friends wanted to leave to drive and explore everyday - so I actually decided to stay in all by myself and just relax and enjoy the comfort.

This property is tucked away, but conveniently close to Volcano National Park. It truly feels like you're in a treehouse. There are a lot of special touches in this home that reflect the owners' care and pride in this property. You do have to go outside to get to the downstairs room. It's very nicely decorated, but had a bit of a musty smell. Strongly recommend the upstairs; moderately recommend the downstairs for another couple or older children. May not be appropriate for smaller children since it's a bit removed from the upstairs.

Glad to be told (but sorry to hear) that the downstairs had a bit of a musty smell... we will be sure to open it up more often as that room most often goes unused.. we are usually on top of that. We do have a dehumidifier in there as well, and will give that more 'air time' before an arrival!! Thanks for letting us know.

Nice interior very cosy. We appreciated their thoughtfulness on our anniversary. It really made it memorable. We also liked that we had breakfast items available for our first morning. This is not common so it was a treat. The banana macademia pancakes were delicious. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. You are able to adjust settings to your specific needs. The tub was also very nice and relaxing after hiking at the volcanos all day. We enjoyed the bath gel. It very refreshing. We didn't think we would use the fireplace much but it came in handy. So easy to use. There is a lot to do nearby. If the weather is cooler at the treehouse and sun is your desire the beaches off the 130 and 137 Kapoho tidepools (snorkeling), Kaimu black sand beach (at the very end of the road) and the ahalanui Park thermal pools are worth seeing. The tree house is very peaceful. You can see so many stars at night from your bed. Victoria and Carlos

If you are considering a place to stay while visiting Hawaii National Volcanoes Park. This is it. From the quick and courteous service from making reservations with Leslie to the charm this home had just about everything was perfect.
Since there are so many positive 5 star reviews I thought I would instead point out things that might be a reason for concern to you:
1. There will be some bugs. Keep in mind this is in a rain forest. If that bothers you Hawaii probably isn't the best vacation spot for you.
2. The main unit is up some stairs, if you are disabled or have a hard time going up/down stairs its something to consider.(there is a downstairs unit, I did not see the interior so cannot comment on it), but the garden area is beautiful for everyone :)
3. The house is cooled via open windows, there will naturally be some dust in the house. All routinely used areas are spotless, however you will find some dust on some of the shelves. Nothing worse than my own house.
As for the positive- everything else. It's all been mentioned before me and if I said anything more it would only take away the surprises that make it so great.
More than a business, more than a house, more than a home- this place affords you the opportunity to create wonderful memories that you will treasure for a lifetime. I can only thank the owners for taking such care to create a place for us all to enjoy.Response from Leslie and Michael - 09/20/2011
Owner
Always grateful for full review. And just a note to clarify on the 'cautionary' side... there are no bugs living inside the house Outside it is extreeeemely rare for mosquitos in Volcano and no cockroaches inside or out ever. A moth/fly/ or other winged bug may fly in the opened house... outside you will not experience bugs on you even while sitting in the grass, really not sure why there was that comment except for visible spider webs on the outside of the
house... we try not to impose ourselves too much on the outdoors. -

Mahalo just doesn't say it!
We had a spectacular visit to Hawaii and the best part of our trip was the time we spent at Maile Tree House - what a wonderful place to get away from it all!
It truly felt like coming home at the end of each day's excursion... and just relaxing here in the evenings was just what we needed!
We appreciated all the thoughtfulness, and the spirit of aloha that they seem to really understand!! They've thought of everything... we thoroughly enjoyed our time there! We'll be back, and will definitely refer others. Thank you, mahalo - a million times each!!

We left this lovely home feeling relaxed and energized- having thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Leslie and Michael have created a lovely little hide-away and have thought of everything - both practical and comfortable - there was not one thing we needed that we could not find. Besides the special things left for us from our hosts, we started off our 25th anniversary with a helicopter tour (Tropical Helicopter) and were thrilled to see active lava (be brave and go for the open-door flight)! In the afternoon we enjoyed Suzanne's lomi-lomi massage (Hale Ho'ola Spa) in Volcano Village. And to end the day, Chef Ron cooked us a wonderful dinner (brought to the house), served by candlelight. Volcano is truly a magical place and we hope to come back again in future years.

My wife and I were anticipating a wonderful three days at the Maile Treehouse, thanks to the clear pictures and very positive correspondence with Leslie. Best of all, the reality was even better than the expectation. The beautiful, quiet, and intimate retreat cottage was also just a few miles from the Volcano National Park entrance. This allowed for many quick trips between the park for hiking and the treehouse for relaxing and meals.
Thanks again for making your retreat home available to us, it was a wonderful experience.

There isn't much we can add that most, if not all of their prior guests haven't already said. This place is Magnificant and Wonderfully whimsical. We enjoyed the treasure hunt for all of their cute surprises! Another nice surprise was that they and many of their neighbors have chosen to keep the native plants going in this area. It is a rain forest getaway, in great proximity to Volcanoes N.P. If we decide to go back to the N.P., we'll definitely want to stay here again. Too bad we only had a couple of days in this wonderful place, but the memories of it will stay with us forever. The only issue we had was with the select comfort bed, which we weren't used to. But otherwise, our stay was awesome!

Delighted for all that you enjoyed... and wish we had had the opportunity to help you with whatever it was with the bed. We just love it and always want to bring it back home with us, but feel the Select Comfort Bed is such a treat for a vacation rental since it caters to every different preference! We hope any future guest will take advantage of our numbers that we have at the house along with the encouragment to use them should anything come up.

Felt like we were living up in the tree canopy with them. Access to the park was so convenient. We hiked the Kilauea Iki Trail and after the 400' ascent a cool shower in the house was just the ticket. We went back to the park to view the Kilauea crater glow at 7pm, very impressive and quick access from the house. We appreciate Leslie and Michael sharing this very special place. When I first started talking to Leslie about renting the treehouse I was blown away with how helpful a perfect stranger could be! I just knew by all the comments from previous guests that we were in for a very special treat. When we arrived (Leslie gave me great directions!) we were greeted by many special surprises and fresh flowers everywhere. We felt so at home in the house. Everything was very clean and meticulously maintained. Throughout our five days here we kept discovering all the little touches & they added so much to our experience. We did a lot of exploring during the days so coming back to the peacefulness of this house was perfect for romantic evenings. They went above and beyond and I'm so grateful we had the opportunity to stay in such an amazing home. It is so close to everything - restaurants, Volcano Village and the Volcanoes National Park. All the comforts of home but even better. The surrounding gardens and feel of the rainforest provide tons of privacy - you feel like you are the only ones around for miles and yet you are less than a 5 minute drive to VNP. This home in the trees is beyond amazing. What a truly beautiful, magical place. We had such a lovely trip to the Big Island and our time at Maile Tree House and hiking in Volcanoes National Park were the highlights for us. As guests we had everything we needed and more. The attention to detail was wonderful and all their personal touches, plus the sheer beauty of the place. It was wonderful to see the stars-so many from the window above the bed ( which is very, very comfy) and to hear the birdsong while having breakfast on the lanai. We took forward to returning - to enjoy this peaceful place-and to hike the trails in Volcanoes that we were unable to get to this trip.

Have stayed in Volcano before and found this tucked away place very charming. The reason I gave it four stars and not five, is because this is a place to stay if you are only using the main house. It is upstairs with an open floorplan and very private. Charming, tastefull, and well stocked, you could spend a week there and totally relax. The problem is that for the other couple staying in the downstairs unit, you get none of that. The room is small, cold, and is just a bedroom with a small bath. Our friends who stayed upstairs were beside themselves with glee, but felt bad for us. The main house is an open floor plan, so you are essentially in their bedroom when upstairs. Stay here as a couple, but skip it if you are going with others. Oh, and eat at the Kilauea Lodge while there.
Response from Leslie and Michael - 04/15/2011
Owner
Aloha, I can appreciate the response to the two bedrooms, as Maile Treehouse, with the Garden Suite as a second bedroom option, is atypical and not suited to all situations. For this reason, we list it as a one bedroom. The following is not meant to be defensive.. just clarifying, as I don't know of anyone before that has been surprised by the design, and therein would lie any dissappointment. Our arrangement, including the downstairs bedroom, has been highly complemented by many families and two couples alike... and has most likely been passed on as unsuitable by others. I'd encourage a look at our extensive pictures and descriptions on our home site which also has uncensored comments specific to the downstairs and full house use! In a nutshell, the upstairs bedroom/tub has an option of being 'visually' separated from the main living space... but any conversation/ noise is shared by all ears upstairs. The Garden Suite downstairs is privately entranced, with an additonal lanai providing coffee/tea/fridge... looking into the forest/garden. The room has an instant wall heater, we post a reccommendation to use the hidden dehumidifier while you are out to have it dry and toasty when returning if needed, as well as there being heated mattress pads for cozy nights. There is no reason to be cold in this room. It is 'custom', high ceilings, crown moulding, wainscot, bay window, bright and lovely, oversized shower and creates a 'private' space for a second bedroom/ bath/ lanai. Without lanai, the room is 218 sf. I hope this provides some useful info.... (okay, a little defensive!- everything was done with much thought and care)

To start things off... wow. I dont think I could have imagined a better home to stay in while on vacation. My boyfriend was deployed for some months before our vacation and we used the treehouse as a "Welcome Home" get away. we happened to be there during a lot of rain which really set the "comfy" mood for the fireplace and relaxation. Everything from the over all decor to the little (spying) nic nacs was absolutely remarkable. all of the furnature was well kept and clean (im a stickler for cleanliness). From the moment i walked in the door, we were overcome by calm and it really set us up for the cozy week we planned on having.
The only thing i think i would have changed is that it was that i didnt stay longer. overall, the best place I have ever stayed.

It is hard to describe how magical the Treehouse is! My husband & I stayed for a few nights and loved every moment of our stay. It was hard to leave and go see the sights because we were so happy and comfortable in this amazing rental!
The kitchen was fully filled with everything you'd need to cook meals. The living room was so cozy with the fireplace, comfy chairs, CD player with lots of CDs, books, games, etc. The bed was really cozy and soft, with high quality pillows & linens. The bathroom was probably my favorite thing. The tub was big enough for two, the open shower was unique with its windows and wooden floor, and the sink & toilet areas were cute.
You are bound to love the amount of natural light in this place. There are windows on almost every available wall space, but you never feel exposed, even at night, because there pretty much aren't neighbors within sight!
The outside is also lovely. The backyard has lots of neat little areas to explore, seats, artwork, and flowers. It was pretty chilly when we were there, so we didn't spent a lot of time lounging outside, but if you go when the weather is nice, the living space would practically double!
It is also in an adorable little neighborhood that I liked to call Hydrangea Town. We went for two walks up and down the roads and really enjoyed looking around. Apparently one of the neighbors has a peacock, which made the walk that much more interesting :)
This is a great home base if you want to spend more than one day at Volcanoes NP. I recommend it with no hesitation!!! -

Our favorite thing was finding all the nicknacks around the house and bedrooms... there was always something unexpected but heartwarming. They helped us in planning our trip and were very accommodating. We can't wait to show pictures to family and friends.

After extensively reviewing the accomodations recommended by Frommers, Fodors, and Trip advisor, I knew I had to stay at the Maile Treehouse. Leslie and Michael have created such a lovely "home" that we found it very difficult to leave and explore Volcano Natl. Park. If you're planning to be in the area, this is the best place to stay.

In the midst of our two month trek throughout the Western United States, we have found a truly wonderful relaxing home. We'd been traveling three weeks and the treehouse provided the perfect spot to stop and regroup. Everything we could wish for was provided and we have never experienced as gratifying a stay as we have had here. We have traveled the world extensively and both agree that this is the best place we have stayed. Mahalo for everything.

We felt so comfortable and relaxed staying in this beautiful hide-a-way. The decor and flowers were perfect touches for a wonderful vacation in paradise! It was everything we'd hoped for. Exploring the gardens made us feel young at heart with its hidden treasures. Thanks to them for opening their special home!
Note: Although I would absolutely recommend this rental, I'm tempted to say definitely would not recommend...just so it would be available next time we wanted to rent. -

Leslie and Michael's treehouse is truly a home away from home. We are clean-freaks and this place was cleaner than any place we have ever been! So great after hiking all day in Volcano National Park (a mere 4 minute drive from the Maille treehouse) to sip on some bubbly in front of a fireplace and sit in a great hot tub. Leslie and Michael have outfitted the place to make you feel right at home - from all the kitchen tools you'll need to a first breakfast for when you take that long flight from the mainland. We can't stop referring to how Leslie and Michael set their place up -- everywhere else will have to compete in our minds. You will not be disappointed. Mahalo Leslie and Michael!!

At the end of a busy day seeing the beautiful sites on the Big Island, it was so nice to come back to the luxurious Maile Treehouse. Being there was another island adventure unlike any other we experienced. The loving and thoughtful attention to every detail was so evident in and outdoors. Every corner of every room was a treat to explore. We are still amazed how every time we thought, "Oh, they won't have this...", we were wrong. Every detail was lovingly attended to. It was hard to leave this paradise, but thanks to all the owners' efforts, we are doing so with very fond memories! If, or rather when we return to the Big Island, we will definitely visit the Maile Treehouse.

Left on 04/19/2010 for a stay in March 2010
Staying here is a wonderful experience. Loved the gardens, birds and the warm & cozy surroundings. Wish we could have stayed longer.
My husband and I stayed upstairs in the Treehouse Suite. Full bath, kitchen, dining area, living area with fireplace, everything top of the line and in top-notch condition. Perfect!
Our two teenagers (15 & 17) enjoyed having their own space downstairs in the Garden Suite(my husband and I certainly didn't mind it either). The guitar that was available was a huge hit with our son.
This is not a place to bring small children. Too many nice objects around the home that might look like toys to young eyes...but aren't!
Also, the upstairs Treehouse Suite has one big, luxurious bed in the bedroom. The Garden Suite, also one bedroom, but can be two beds, is downstairs with a private entrance, not directly accessible from the upstairs.
A top highlight of our trip to the Big Island of Hawaii was staying at the Maile Treehouse. Thank you Leslie and Michael!!

After reading all the reviews, I thought it would be impossible for the "Tree House" to live up to all the hype - but it's just as wonderful as it sounds! We had a nightmare trip from Maui so we were especially thankful to land in such a warm, welcoming place. Even though it rained almost the whole time we were in Volcano, it felt like a magical fairy tale: the lush trees, bushes, leaves & flowers glistened; the birds sang; and the fireplace glowed. After a long, exhausting, fabulous day in VNP we loved coming 'home' to soak in the Jacuzzi, drink some wine and sleep in the totally luxurious bed. The tree-top windows, the warm wood floors & built-ins, the comfortable furniture, the perfectly stocked kitchen...it really is a little piece of Paradise! Mahalo, Leslie & Michael - we loved the Maile Tree House

Owner
While Volcano is a rainforest and rain is not uncommon, particularly in a come and go fashion, I'd like to clarify the comment ... "Even though it rained almost the whole time we were in Volcano..." The "whole time" in this case was only a one night stay... just for perspective, though this wasn't a complaint, an entire stay would typically be assumed as many days longer. Mahalo, Leslie (ps we do provide raincoats and umbrella's so you don't have to pack for every possibility)

Trust us, this is the best location to see the volcanoes and the treehouse fully lived up to all expectations from the stunning reviews on TripAdvisor and details on the owners' own website. What a glorious place you has been created here. Every single item in the house is intentional, beautiful, useful and perfectly located. (and spotless!) I felt at home, and in fact, sketched a little ground plan, 'cause if i ever get to build a house some day, I should think the treehouse would be just about perfect for me and partner. Darling gardens, incredibly appointed kitchen, easy access to National Park, Hilo, and Pahoa coast. We rented both the treehouse and the garden suite so that my father and sister and I had plenty of room. It was still affordable. Private, magical, and meticulously cared for. I will return.

The location is perfect for touring volcano park - though the house is so nice

Besides the furnishings and amenities, we did build the home to be comfortable rain or shine... up off the ground, double wall - (single wall is common here) floor-walls-ceilings insulated, skylights, tons of windows for air and light, instant heat, and openess- even in the closets. I couldn't recommend Maile Treehouse any more enthusiastically. It's on a very quiet private road in a lush setting and very close to Volcano. It's spacious, beautifully decorated and extrememly comfortable and has a large covered outdoor area. Treehouse is an apt name for it; it feels as if it were designed into the forest canopy, with lots windows and that put you at eye level with nature.
The owners have clearly put a great deal of thought and love into every detail; the Treehouse has countless personal, whimsical touches that make it truly unique and delightful and that tap into the magical, serene feeling of Volcano.

Inside the treehouse you overlook the forest canopy from large windows and skylights that cover every angle. The deep rich wood finishes, warm fireplace and tropical decor, soothes the soul. There has been so much love and care put into the treehouse, from the locallly made ornaments/accent pieces, to the warm colour combinations and plethera of unique amenities. Not only are you greeted by a warm Aloha, written in white stone against the black volcanic rocks, as you approach the house, Kona coffee, Macadamia Nut Pancake Mix and all the breakfast fixins are waiting for you to enjoy on your first morning. It is so peaceful and relaxing. This was truly an amazing experience and while we have travelled the world, we have yet to find a place quite like this. Leslie was a pleasure to work with in planning our stay at the Maile Treehouse.
The home is beautiful with many thoughtful details. The full kitchen was a pleasure to cook in with everything we needed. The living room has comfortable couches with various DVDs and CDs to choose from. It even has a double sided fireplace with the other side in the bedroom area. Very cozy for those cold Volcano nights! And the jacuzzi tub was wonderful to relax in while listening to music and watching the rain. We loved the adjustable bed too! And the garden is well manicured and great to walk through to find little treasures at every turn.
The location of the home is very convenient to the Volcanoes National Park where there are great hikes and sightseeing. Day trips can be taken to Hilo or Punalu`u where there is a beautiful black sand beach.
We loved everything about the Maile Treehouse. The only thing we did not like was having to leave. We look forward to returning soon! -

day, coffee, tea, lots of condiments and other cooking ingredients, I could go
on and on. Great movie and game selection. The beds are comfy and the
fireplace got use every day, even in August. The days are warm and sunny and
the evening cool and rainy. You feel like you are in the middle of the
rainforest (well, technically, you are). This isn't a sun and sand location.
However, you can easily drive to sun and sand. Very, very relaxing on the
doorstep of the volcano. Would highly recommend this choice in Volcano
village. We went past a number of other selections and were happy with our
choice. Eat at the lodge in the village. Great food! -

Toronto, Ontario, CanadaI wish my home was that beautiful!

In July 2009 my husband and I stayed for a few days at the Maile Treehouse in Volcano, HI. What a magical place! The cottage is so beautiful that I'm currently using photos I took of it to inspire the decor of my own cottage in Ontario! The attention to detail is breathtaking! The place is filled with beautiful treasures that must have been collected over the years, and yet it's warm and inviting and cosy. And the surrounding area is lush and green and beautiful. You look out the window and feel like you're park of the jungle.
The cottage is conveniently located just a short drive to Volcano National Park, and was a perfect home base for our explorations on the Big Island. I highly recommend it! -

OregonHighlight of our vacation
Left on 11/25/2009 for a stay in November 2009
The nights we stayed at Maile Treehouse were a highlight of our vacation. There is something special about this place. The atmosphere is welcoming, the design beautiful, and the decor elegant yet inviting and homey. Everything was spotless (I'm a stickler) and the kitchen fully equipped (beautiful view while cooking). The surprises throughout the property kept us entertained throughout our stay and the extra touches made us feel like family. When we returned from our trip, we discovered that the treehouse has quite a stunning reputation. My husband's coworker who has family in the area, knew of the treehouse and confirmed it is one of the best, if not the best, places to stay in the area. We'd highly recommend it.

santa cruzWonderful place for honeymooners
Left on 11/25/2009 for a stay in June 2009
We heard of Maile Tree House from friends who had stayed there. For our Big Island honeymoon, we were looking for a quiet, private, reasonably priced alternative to the Four Seasons Hualalai, where we spent the first half of our trip. I had some concern that the Tree House would be a comedown after the plush resort service - but instead it proved the perfect alternative experience. The house is located very close to the national park, where we spent almost two full days driving around and hiking. The weather was misty and damp, encouraging us to linger in bed and over coffee at breakfast before venturing to lower altitudes. The house was well appointed in typical B&B style, with a huge bathtub, fireplace, and comfortable towels and linens. The kitchen had absolutely everything we needed to cook up our own meals with stuff we'd bought at the Hilo farmers' market. I did get a massage locally from the brochure in the house book and it was excellent. The only thing I would change would be the bed. It was very nice to have the dual-sided adjustments, but the bed itself was a little soft - I'm a big fan of pillow-top firm mattresses so this was not quite my thing. That said, it didn't detract from our stay at all and we would gladly stay there again even with the current bed.

Love hearing all the up side.. and very sorry to hear the bed felt soft. I'm assuming the correct side was adjusted to the 100 high mark and done while being on the bed.. that would be how to get it at it's firmest, which to me feels extreeeemely firm... and the control for the heating mattress pad was not mistakenly used. Rats, our whole purpose is that everyone can get the wide range of desires people have in their mattress preferences, from Very Firm to Soft... we have arrived to find the bed in a wide range of levels! I'm glad it didn't color the end result experience though, and thank you for letting us know . I have not heard this before... however it doesn't mean your the first to think so!!

As an architect for very high end custom homes, I have developed a rather critical eye for quality of construction and innovative design. To my delight, Maile TreeHouse not only passed my critical eye, I felt it was deserving of a gold medal. The care and skill that have gone into the construction, finishes, furnishing, and decorating make this a place you will find yourself lingering in so you can enjoy its peace, tranquility, and comfort. While I am one that usually rushes off to see as many sights as possible, we lounged about enjoying the lovely music provided, sitting by the cozy fire, and exploring the lush vegetation sprinkled with hidden treasures that caused us many smiles. We were so sorry we hadn't booked more nights here, and will certainly rectify that on our next trip to this little corner of paradise.
