What Past Guests Are Saying
Enchanting Rainforest Getaway
We didn't want to leave Hale Sweet Hale. The home was peaceful, beautiful, and immaculately maintained. The only thing that kept our stay from being absolutely perfect was the closure of Volcano National Park due to the government shutdown. But the serenity of the house made up for that. We loved eating breakfast, sipping Kona coffee and listening to the birds on the lanai in the mornings. Just heavenly. Thank-you for letting us experience your wonderful house! Can't wait to come back!

Awesome Home and absolutley the best way to visit Volcano!
My husband and I had just left 10 nights at Princeville in Kauai, and thought there was nothing that could equal that experience. However, when we arrived at Hale Sweet Hale, our jaws literally dropped at just how beautiful this very cozy house really was! Our spirits lifted immediately and we couldn't wait to relax in this home! We loved the hot tub and the back yard privacy. We especially enjoyed the fireplace and the very charming details throughout this house! We also very much appreciated the warm welcome (we arrived early) and helpful hints the house keeper shared with us. She was so very nice! This is a house which was built with love...and it clearly shows! We also enjoyed how close it was to the park and took advantage of that to view the orange lava glow at night after most folks had left the park. Very cool experience! I also recommend the Mona Kea Stargazing trip via arnott's lodge in Hilo. Our guide was excellent! Finally, I truly loved the Merrie Monarch Festival framed posters in the main living area. Makes me want to come back and attend some day!

Lovely garden and house - a good respite from resort accommodati
The outlook from both the house and the back deck to the well-kept garden was very relaxing. The house itself was welcoming, clean and comfortable. It was well-appointed and had plenty of natural light. Having a computer as well as Wi-Fi was a bonus. The location was good - close to the Volcano National Park. It felt isolated and yet there were houses nearby. The only negative was the open fire. If it had been winter we would have frozen as we couldn't keep the fire alight! One suggestion: We had been advised on how to avoid a large pothole in the road. However, it would have been helpful to have a printed map to show us how to 'go around the block'. It was difficult driving to our night volcano viewing in the pitch black along a goat track with few street signs. Luckily we had taken screen-shots from Google Maps and could use our ipad to navigate. All in all, a very enjoyable log cabin experience.
Hale Sweet Hale is a perfect name for this charming home
My mom and I stayed at Hale Sweet Hale this past September and we could not have been more comfortable! The house is cozy and secluded and loaded with skylights that not only let the sunshine in to keep it bright among the lush foliage, but also let you see the stars while nodding off to sleep. We loved it and would definitely stay here again.
All you need
We loved staying here, it was a lovely home, clean and well equipped. Beautiful setting and cozy interior. We enjoyed the hot tub and being less than 5 minutes from the park. It felt like home.

Quiet, Beautiful Cabin
We loved our 4 night stay at Hale Sweet Hale (my self, my husband, and two teenage sons). The house was just as promised online right down to the tea/coffee and condiments in the kitchen. There was even a cooler in the pantry that we used for picnic lunches. The hot tub was perfect for our tired legs after taking many hikes in Volcano NP. We found the beds to be very comfortable too. I have already recommended a friend stay here when they visit Hawaii. I agree with other review about the road - the "puddle" is more of a major rut issue and our rental car (Nissan altima) was tricky to navigate around the major dips. I would suggest some bags of gravel or giving directions for the longer way around to the house. Working with Volcano Vacations was great - friendly service and quick responses. Thank you for helping to make our Hawaii dream vacation wonderful!
Bright and airy home in the rainforest
Our family has visited Volcano Village four times now, and Hale Sweet Hale may be the nicest cottage we've stayed in yet. We received timely and clear instructions from Merlenna at Hawaii Volcano Vacations throughout the rental process, which set our minds at ease when renting for a family.
The home was extremely bright and airy considering it is in the dense rainforest area of the island. The skylights (and the unexpected rain-free days) really made a difference. The kitchen worked great--plenty of room for 4 cooks (well, some making drinks with the blender provided), and the coffee maker and appliances were top-notch. We didn't have a chance to use the gas BBQ, but it looked quite nice and large enough for a good-sized meal.
We sought out a place with a hot tub and weren't disappointed with this one. The tub accommodated our four adult-sized family members nicely and the view of the back-yard is so soothing. We also enjoyed breakfasts out on the lanai. The beds were comfortable, with plenty of bedding and loads of nice fluffy towels. Umbrellas and flashlights were provided, which was a nice touch, and some of the games and guidebooks were also fun to avail ourselves of. Even the computer (very fun computer case!) was wonderful to have available to us for checking on the status of the lava flow, etc.
The location of the cottage was great for visiting the National Park, and the art galleries in Volcano. The road to the cottage from the main road is rather rough and slow-going. Overall, this was a memorable experience that I would recommend to anyone and would return here anytime we can!
This was a very cozy cabin hiding in the tropical forest near the Volcano National Park area. This was a very nice retreat, was very clean, and we highly recommend a stay here, especially if looking to spend more time in the area. Our only regret was that we didn't get to spend more time here.
Wonderful cabin in volcano village
We had a great 2 day stay in hale sweet hale. The cabin was clean and welcoming, but the surroundings were amazing. You are in the rainforest!! Would not hesitate to rent again.
red deer ab
The house was very comfortable and our stay quite relaxing.
The house was very clean & well-stocked. We would have liked to have a couple lawn chairs to sit out in the sun.
Also, maybe the road could use a little fixing up but it didn't rain so it was O.K.
Needs some upgrades
Great location in Volcano and a good base to see the sites in Volcanoes National Park.
Overall, it was a comfortable stay but the master bedroom needs a few dollars invested in a new mattress and some decent pillows.
I guess we happened to be there during an unusually cool period, but it was problematic that the home's only source of heat is a rather ancient woodstove. We needed it on every night we were there and had to go and buy dry firewood as what was left at the house was wet and smoky.
Relaxing stay in a beautiful house with a great lanai in the for
We really enjoyed the woodburning fireplace and the comfortable furniture in the living room. The TV only had very basic cable, but with the available computer and great Internet connection we were able to stream the car race for my husband. He was thrilled! A space heater for the bedroom would have been nice, since it was pretty cold at night.
Beautiful Volcano Stay
The problem with Hale Sweet Hale is you will want to return as soon as you leave. The home was very clean and nicely appointed. We traveled with our 9 year old daughter who loved her own room, the hot tub, the rain forest back yard and the tunnel of trees you have to go through to get there. You are very close to the park entrance for all you hiking, watching the glowing crater, and park stops. The home is a perfect place for your family to return after fun filled days. Beds are warm and comfortable (it is chilly up there).
Hale Sweet Hale is a great place to stay, Volcano National park is just around the corner. Every thing you need is there, the hot tub, BBq and log fire help you relax after a day of hiking. Although not necessary i was pleased we rented a 4x4 as the access road is bumpy.
We arrived the Big Island on 12/19 morning and drove all the way to the Volcano National Park right away. After touring the volcano area, we drove back to the vacation house. It's raining and cold. But the vacation house is very close to the entrance of the national park. When we opened the door, we saw a beautiful cottage, nice and surprisingly clean. The volcano area is very humid, but we couldn't smell any weird odor inside the house. Plenty of exta towels and beddings in the wardrobe. Enough logs for the fireplace were stocked up. The house is spacious enough for a family of 4.. I would definitely stay in this vacation house again when I come to the volcano next time.
Just one point, the puddle and the unpaved road leading to the house is a bit muddy and rough, better get a SUV !

Truly Home Sweet Home
Hale Sweet Hale was exactly as advertised. A comfortable respite in the rainforest, close to Volcano National Park and amenities, yet definitely an escape from reality! We would highly recommend staying here.
Not for the allergy sufferer!
This is a very nicely furnished home with lots of extras but the mildew smell was overpowering during our stay. Both my wife and I were both plagued with sneezing, watery eyes, and running nose upon arrival. I spent as much time as possible outside in an effort to reduce the effects. A load of wet bedclothes that had been left in the washer by the maid was also not helping the smell. I would have given 5 stars but the smell was just too much.

Aloha and thank you for bringing this to our attention. Oh no! We're so sorry you did not completely get to enjoy one of our lovely 4 1/2 star homes! Hale Sweet Hale is exceptionally known for its antique log cabin style wood which may at times need deep polishing to avoid having the dampness of the rain forest settle in and leave a mildew smell.
We do wish you had informed us of this issue while you were with us, as we do have our office right across the street, and manage many other lovely homes that we would'be been more than happy to love you to. Our priority is to keep our guests happy! We will look into your concerns and address them right away! Mahalo for your review.
Hawaii Volcano Vacations
Hale Sweet Hale was the perfect cottage for our family of four while we were in Volcano. It was extremely clean and all the amenities we needed (especially the washer & dryer). We loved the covered lanai, hot tub and the log cabin feel to the interior. Our stay was brief, but we would have happily stayed longer in this cottage.

Very well maintained house
The house was super clean and well furnished and decorated. Nice little details and accents, plenty of towels for bathroom and beach. Very comfortable for our family of 5. The only thing that was slightly negative was that the dryer would only work at high temp, but I was thankful to have a washer and dryer. Also, would have liked the hot tub to be a little hotter, but that's super minor. The place was a little hard to find, but the kids loved the "adventure." Would definitely recommend.
The perfect place to stay for visiting the volcano national park
The house is very comfortable and very close to the park : very appreciated if you want to spend as many time as you like during the day, there, and later see the red glows in the dark and be home soon after !
Finding the house was a challenge because we did not want to drive thru the puddle. 2nd directions were not that clear as there are really no street signs. However, found the house and it was like an oasis. We were welcomed with the living room lamps on and the hot tub ready. Weather was beautiful, so we spent a lot of time in the hot tub, bottle of wine, catching up with old friends.
Next morning, we explored the gardens and was delighted to see the beautiful orchids and heliconias.
Beds were comfortable too...we all slept like babies.
My only other comment is that the clothes dryer does not work properly. Towels took a couple of hours to dry.
Cozy, quiet, convienent
The house was very tastefully decorated, with comfortable beds (a queen and two twins - perfect for a family of four), a very clean kitchen, nice hot tub on the back porch overlooking a lovely, private, green yard and garden. The location was excellent for visiting and hiking in Volcano National Park. I would recommend arriving during daylight hours. The road to the house is a bit tricky to find and navigate in the dark.
Nice place to stay while exploring Volcano National Park
A quaint, quiet, and cozy house. Reasonably priced, great access to Volcano National park. Responsive property management (request for no feathers was honored). Note that the house was humid and slightly musty, but it is in the middle of a rain forest, so not much to do about it. Still they seemed to be doing everything to mitigate it (dehumidifier was running, desiccant used in strategic spots). The kitchen was well stocked with cooking implements, and the gas grill was a thoughtful addition, as was the clothes washer and dryer. I appreciated the way the home was decorated, and the wood burning stove with wood was an unexpected bonus.
The kids loved the hot tub, wireless was a nice touch. There were a number of little things that just added up to making the place feel homey and like the owners really wanted you to enjoy your stay.
One thing to note, when we arrived, one part of the road had a huge puddle (or a small pond) in it and we weren't sure the car would make it through. Fortunately, there is a way to loop around and approach the house from the other side. After unpacking the car and checking it out, we found the car was able to ford the puddle.
Bottom line, it was great place.
not what I expected
The house looked exactly like photographs. Very nice. However, there were some problems:
We should have been given more info re the unpaved road. The road closest to the house was flooded out and not passible to pass in a small rental car. Fortunately, a neighbor was walking her dog and told us how to get there from the other side. The road was also too rough and hard to go the alternative route without getting lost at night, so we did not get to see the volcano at night. A huge disappointment.
It was cold and the wood stove was a problem. I have a fireplace and grew up with fireplaces and still couldn't get it to work properly. The draft was poor and at one point we got a bad down draft. The wood only burned in the middle, never fully caught fire. If there was a trick to it, there should have been directions. A space heater should be provided.
I highly recommend all directions be placed in a binder.
The locked up hot tub was a pain, and then the water temp dropped from 100 to 91 and never went any higher.
The oven leaked gas and the left back burner produced charred stuff all over the outside of the pan.
The house was musty and the dehumidier filled with water both days and went off until emptied.
The double bed bedroom is not for light sleepers. Water heater makes a racket.

Aloha and mahalo for your review. We are always trying to maintain our rentals for the pleasure of our guests. I will forward your concerns to both the homeowner and house cleaner and take your thoughts into consideration. We have many other homes we manage in Volcano as well, so if you ever want to stay in any of them, we do offer a 10% repeat guest discount!
We woke to tropical birdsong every morning
This cottage was the perfect home-base for our family's adventures in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the east side of the Big Island. The kids loved having their own bed in their own room and we loved relaxing in the hot tub. I appreciated ittle touches like having a conch shell for the kids to blow and the beautiful tasteful tropical decor.
Akua and my Kumu sent us to volcano and Hale Sweet Hale for a pupose. Your home was a part of that calling. My significant other of 17 years proposed in the front of Hale Sweet Hale on our last day there and I found my calling at volcano that will lead me to my next journey in life. Everything at Hale Sweet Hale was magical, to the time we arrived and to the time we left. I highly recommend that all couples who may have a "calling" or who just want to reconnect with each other, stay at Hale Sweet Hale. The Karma there is so touching that you get "chicken skin". You have everything you need at Hale Sweet Hale. Even a hot tub to help ease all your aches, pains and worries away! Hopefully, we will spend our honeymoon there. Mahalo to akua and Hale Sweet Hale...

i enjoyed my stay at "hale sweet hale very much.
the house is a well appointed two bedroom, nestled

the peace and solitude it offers are wonderful,

We stayed at "Hale Sweet Hale" for one night at the end of July 2010. It was so convenient for our visit to Kilauea National Park, being only 5 minutes from the entrance. We enjoyed the quiet and peaceful setting, surrounded by lush green ferns and lovely hydrangeas. It seemed so removed from everything, but it was just a short distance from the main highway. The cottage was so sweet and beautiful, and comfortable. We just loved it! We' definitely would like to go back and stay for a longer period of time to experience more of this peaceful retreat.

Mahalo for your review! We're glad to know you enjoyed your visit with us. We hope to see you again!
Nice enough, but...
The directions to get to Hale Sweet Hale were inaccurate. The owner insisted that they were correct, but they weren't. We checked several times, because we felt so stupid to not be able to get it right. At the spot we were to turn on I'i'we (can't remember the spelling), there was no such street. The street that was there was Kilauea, and we had to turn (dead end). Then came I'i'we as an extension of this street. At that point we tried to follow the turn directions, but nothing made sense, simply because Kilauea St. had been ignored in the directions. This was very confusing. And the owner said to ignore Kilauea (!) and that we would find the place, that nobody had ever had problems with this before. Although Hale Sweet Hale was very nice, this rather set the tone for the visit. The only other complaint we had was about the fireplace. I like fireplaces, but we had no need to use this one while we were there. So, even thought we never used it, this one left a smell hanging in the air that actually made my eyes burn. And it bothered my husband's asthma.
Response from Joey Gutierrez - 03/30/2011
It can be a little challenging finding Hale Sweet Hale the first time. Some of the street signs don't make it easy. Despite that, hopefully your stay was was pleasant and enjoyable.
The perfect home away from home
After a long trip halfway around the world, we could have had no better place to relax.
Everything was more than we could have hoped for. We were greeted with a warm welcome message and fresh supplies of everything we needed to feel right at home.
If you are in need of a true "get away from it" without being too far away from creature comforts, this is the place to stay.
With Hilo just a short drive away, the location is great for relaxing, and also close to some great sightseeing and activity spots like Kilauea and the winery.
With all the amenities, one could stock up on supplies in Hilo and not have to venture very far, but yet, some of the great beaches are easily reachable from here.
Wish we could have stayed longer and we'll definitely be back.
Response from Joey Gutierrez - 04/21/2011
Mahalo for your review! It's such a nice review. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and wish you could have stayed longer too. But hurry back! We hope to see you soon!
Had an amazing stay at Hale Sweet Hale! We were very sad to leave. It felt like home from the minute we pulled into the driveway. The website pictures don't even begin to describe the beauty, tranquility and peacefulness we experienced at this home. From the floor-to-ceiling cedar to the ginger arrangement that greeted us on the dining table, this was a complete sensory experience. I've never felt more relaxed and "at home" on a vacation than during our stay at Hale Sweet Hale. The entire experience, from reservation to check-out, was perfection. The home was perfectly located in Volcano, which gave us a chance to experience all the sights of the Hilo-side of the Big Island. Here's a tip: Treat yourself to a take-out dinner from Thai Thai after a long day of sightseeing and you'll feel like you've gained complete enlightenment!
A wonderful place to stay for access to the National Park
Avery clean and lovely house. Nice and quiet. Everything you need for a home away from home. Would definitely stay again

Hale Sweet Hale was very sweet
We loved staying at Hale Sweet Hale. My husband and I traveled with our 9 year old granddaughter who was reluctant to leave our condo in Kono but when she saw HSH from the car, she exclaimed: Oh, it's just darling, and her thoughts were echoed by us when we went inside.
