Brandon, MSColorful and spacious, secluded hideaway.
Left on 03/14/2013 for a stay in February 2013
The cottage was colorful, comfortable and very spacious. The location was a little more secluded than we would have liked. The house is approximately a mile from the entrance to Volcano National Park, which was handy.Check/in and out was simple and quick . Master bedroom is downstairs separate from main living space , which proved to be a little awkward . Having a washer and dryer was a huge plus.

This home was easy to get comfortable in. We loved the coffee service, the wood stove, and the hot tub! Everything was clean and there were plenty of towels. Just a short drive to the park and to restaurants. We loved the coziness of the unit. The only negative that we saw was that there was a lack of space to put clothing. This is personal, however, I know some people do not unpack their clothing. All in all a very nice experience!

We stayed here for 4 days in Jan 2013. We loved the location...very private and in the middle of a fern forest. We had no problems with directions but would advise to arrive in daylight as it is very dark at night. House is very close to VNP and abt 30 minutes to Hilo. Also advise to stop at grocery store before you arrive. Keiki Hale was very clean with a well stocked kitchen. My only complaint would be the bedroom is on lower level and no entrance from inside and a bit musty smelling. We elected to sleep upstairs on the futon. All in all it is a great place to stay and we would stay here again.

Left on 01/10/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We enjoyed our trip to Volcano, hi. This house was a convenient place to stay during our trip and has many nice features. We enjoyed the fireplace and the upstairs was comfortable. The downstairs bedroom smelled too bad to sleep in (musty, smoker? smell -- quite strong). Also the jetted tub on the deck is nice, but did not have enough hot water to fill the tub up (?is the water heater not large enough?) The beds upstairs are not bad, but would not want to sleep on them for many nights in a row).

We found this little property interesting -- the decor is very floral! Lots of chickens! One thing we found challenging was that the master bedroom was on the basement level, with access to upstairs on the outside of the house. Not functional for our 5 yr old who would have to sleep on his own. we all slept in the living room. The light outside the main living area was burnt out and there were so many keys to sort through. It was very clean and well appointed with a great kitchen etc. the hot tub was not as expected either -- it was a small tub that would barely fit two. again not workable for our family -- but fine for others. We loved the woodburning fire place, but it was all a bit more work that we were planning on given the bed making etc.

Directions to this place were a little difficult to follow. The downstairs room was musty so we did not use this. The upstairs room was fine after we put the fire on to rid of the dampness. It was about 20 km to Volcano National Park which was manageable. We had an accident and we were unable to stay one of the nights at Volcano. The folks were absolutely understanding and refunded us the night even though there policy is not to do this. All in all it is good for a few nights.

Even for the relatively low price in Volcano I can only give it 1.5-2 stars out of 5.
The good: 1) close to Volcano Park
The bad: 1) it' s hard to find with literally no street sign. 2) once you find the street you are all over the road dodging huge potholes on the dirt road (can't the town just put dirt into the potholes, it's a lot less complex than a paved road, just saying). 3) Musty! I know the area gets a lot of rain and there can be some time between guests but can you air out the place before guest arrive? The dampness + stagnant air + furniture cloth + perfumed cleaning agents + time = almost unbreathable (had to open all the windows and heat up the place). There is a de-humidifier however it's obnoxiously loud so it's unusable. 4) the BR: whatever airfreshener/cleaning agent/detergent they used is absolutely horrid, so we slept upstairs on the futon. 5) the fireplace is to small for the space. It takes a looonnnggg time to get that thing up and running (city slickers you're screwed) and then it literally takes all night to heat up the entire space, and that's only if you can feed it more wood every 2-4 hrs throughout the night (if you need to sleep you're screwed). I get it... there is a outdoorsy, wilderness conquering, cozy and romantic aura of a wood burning fireplace but it's just eating up vacation time when I could be vacationing! Advice... look for a gas fireplace. 5) bathroom has a musty smell but with even more fragrance spiked cleaning agents. 6) lots of light switches (inside and outside) but not all of them worked (please test the bulbs). 7) Dish TV is almost impossible to figure out and it is just flat out a waste of my vaca time to figure out (please just write out the instructions like the instructions to turn on the oven).
Summery: we had stayed at another place in the area at almost 3x the cost and it was worth it because it was 100x better! Cleaning fee and you want me to do dishes before leaving...Mahalo.Response from Joey Gutierrez - 10/30/2012

Oh No! We are so sorry you feel that way about our paradise in the rain forest! We have forwarded your concerns to the house cleaner and management and they will definitely take care of those issues. We have on-call staff available for housecleaning, maintenance, plumbing, etc issues so we wish you had let us know of these concerns, as we would have taken care of them right away! We are so sorry for the inconvenience caused to you and we appreciate your review.

Everything was good except did not like the fact that bedroom was a separate entrance from the house off the garage and no bathroom down there. Also not enough hot water for the hot tub.

It was very much away from the usual Hawaiian experience. We looked out on a rain forest every day. We were very close to the Volcano National Park (10 minutes). Cooked many of our meals at the house. We had great privacy.

Very private and exceptionally affordable in comparison to other Hawaiian hotels/b&b;'s. Very well supplied and the tons of privacy on the property. My only complaints are lower bedroom was extremely musty (unable to sleep in the room but we slept upstairs with great windows & views) and the out door tub was a great idea but leaked so difficult to use! I would recommend this unit or try another with Volcano Vacations - perfect location & great price!

Left on 06/18/2012 for a stay in June 2012
First of all, this place was hard to find. One of the street names on the directions provided was not spelled correctly, one letter was wrong. In Hawaii, this makes a Very big difference, especially when that letter is a vowel. The next street had NO Sign, so we did not know if it was the correct street or not. We drove past it...then came back. The directions state "fourth house on the left". Well, first you must pass about four houses on the Right-with NO houses on the left, a bit confusing. This is while dodging large crater type potholes on the "gravel" road, going 10 MPH so as not to damage the car. You cannot see the houses on the left, only the driveways. Count the driveways and you are good.
As for the house, it is set up in a very odd manner. At first we could not find the bedroom, which is where we planned to sleep. It is downstairs, across from the hot tub with sliding glass doors for access. It is a bit cramped in there, no place to unpack luggage. Finding the half bath was a similar experience. It is downstairs in the carport, the door looks like a closet door from the outside. It is far from the bedroom. We decided to stay upstairs and sleep on the futon.
Upstairs was nice. Very lovely decor. Lots of brochures and Dvds. Beautiful full bathroom. We were happy to have the washer and dryer downstairs, and did one load of laundry using detergent we brought with us. However, we discovered that there was no place to unpack our luggage. There is one tiny closet upstairs, which contains linens for the various daybeds and futon and also contains some of the owners clothing. No luggage racks that I could find. So our living room became our bedroom, and the daybeds/couches became our dressers. Not pretty.
We wasted too much time trying to find the place and then trying to find the rooms, etc and it got too dark for us to leave and venture out for our first night. I hope my information helps future renters from making the same mistakes. Also be sure to bring plenty of food. We brought some, but not enough.
The property is a 10 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is great. It is also close to Volcano Village. If you have little luggage and are driving a 4X4, this place will be fine. -

Keiki Hale had all the comforts of home for our four-day stay. The weather was cool and very wet; we especially enjoyed having the wood burning fire-place, umbrellas and cozy bedding. The house has eaves at the entrances - no need to get wet bringing in your groceries! Directions to the house were perfect, keys were in place, and there were lights left on in case we arrived in the dark. We were able to have family dinners each night with just about everything in the kitchen we needed. The decor is delightful, and the house was spotless! Cell phones worked fine, as did my at & T wireless internet. We will likely rent here again!

VirginiaWhere's the heat???
Left on 01/31/2012 for a stay in January 2012
While Keiki Hale was an attractive rental and convenient to the volcano park, I have never been so cold in my life. More blankets were definitely needed and perhaps a space heater. Not everyone feels like messing w/ a wood stove. Service? What's that? After experiencing other rentals where the manager greets or at least calls to make sure everything is OK - we were left to our own devices from start to finish.

Aloha,
Thank you for review. We're sorry for any inconvenience not having heat has caused you. We had a cold spell while you were here, with abnormal flash floods which caused the extreme cold weather. We usually provide heaters to guests when requested. And we are available by cell phone all day long. Heaters are not provided by homeowners by their choice due to the high utility usage, but we do provide to guests who let us know of their concerns if we have any heaters available in our office. The brand new fire stove has provided ample heat for our past guests, so we're sorry you weren't able to enjoy the use of it. We do provide a 10$ repeat guest discount if you ever want to stay with us in any of our other homes.
