We really enjoyed our stay in the Ho'ola guest house. It is a beautiful home in a very peaceful, private lot. The many windows made it feel very open. It had everything we needed to make it feel homey and inviting.

Had a wonderful 3 night stay. Everything was neat and clean, and ready to go - even the fireplace was "match ready" with logs and kindling already in place! The guest house is completely surrounded by rain forest - you'll never know that there are neighbors. There are windows and skylights everywhere so you're bathed in natural light. The house is just minutes away from Volcano National Park - so a night time visit to the volcano is a must. There are several excellent restaurants nearby in the village of Volcano - a little pricey but hey this is a tourist location.

This home would have been a great place to stay in nice weather - but watch the forecast. During a cold, very wet March stay, we were not able to get warm inside the house. The fireplace did not draw well, so we spent one night coughing in a house full of smoke. There are some space heaters about, but they are not adequate to heat the entire space. Book this place in warmer parts of the year and you'll probably be fine.

We stayed five nights here and really enjoyed everything about it, the house, setting, location, etc were perfect for us. The furniture was nice and comfortable, everything in the home was spotless. We loved all the windows of the home so we could see the beautiful foliage and birds from every room.
There was a chill in the house when we returned from our hiking and exploring in the evenings but the fireplace took care of that.
We are not use to dehumidifiers, but we quickly figured out how to empty, you may want to leave instructions for them?
We truly loved our stay in Ho'ola, and this will be our choice when we return to the area. -

Ho'ola guest house was a wonderful base from which to visit Volcanoes National Park. Volcano village itself is tiny, so we were thrilled to have such a beautiful house to use as a base. The house is stunning inside and out and feels incredibly tranquil and relaxing. Firewood was provided, so we were able to build a fire in the evenings and the hdmi port on the tv gave us a great chance to watch some movies fireside after cooking up a feast in the massive kitchen. If you're looking for a well-equipped and beautiful property near to Kilauea then look no further.

Mandeville, LANice stay in Volcano
Left on 11/30/2012 for a stay in November 2012
The house was lovely with nice architechtural details in the handrails and balcony. The layout and space was good. I loved the laundry room and the well-stocked kitchen. The pretty, private rainforst location was convenient to Volcano Village and the National Park.
On the down side, the house smelled really musty when we first arrived. It was clean, but the smell was not good. It gets cold at night and it would have been nice to have central heat instead of baseboards. And we really did not like the rainhead showers. Also, the water is yellow (in the toilets and when you run a bath) which again feels a little unclean even though the house was clean.
I have never stayed in a guest house before, so I don't know the expectations, but I paid a $75 cleaning fee and then there was a note from the cleaning person asking for a tip as well. The note also asked that dishes be cleaned and the garbage taken out, which is reasonable, but then asked that the house be left in the same condition as when we arrived. I am not sure what that means. I did not have time to start washing sheets and towels, drying them and then making the beds.
Overall it was a nice house and I would recommend it.Response from Joey Gutierrez - 12/02/2012

Beautiful home in middle of fern forest right next to Volcano Nat'l Park. Lots of room for family of four. Luxurious accommodations. Great location - delicious Thai restaurant nearby. Arrangements were easy. Park was great to see. Go see akaka Falls. Wish we had had more time on the Big Island.

My wife and I try to get away from from everything once a year when possible on our anniversary. We like volcano because of its isolated feeling and the cool nights. We have stayed in different cottages over the years. We must say that of all the places we have stayed we enjoyed our stay at Ho'ola Guest House the best. You just have to be there to feel the place. It is clean bright and surrounded by the forest. I am not good at putting into words how we felt about this place. All I can say that if the place is open for us latter this year we will not seek any other we have found the best get away for us.
I Thank the owners for sharing this special place with others.

Beautiful place - very well maintained. The fireplace downstairs was perfect for those cool winter nights. The location is close to the volcano national park and the volcano village (both less than 3 min away by car).
This place is perfect for families, and with the pull-out bed/couch downstairs, has enough room for 6 people - although 2 beds are in a "loft" and not a room.

Mahalo for your review! Ho'ola Guest House is definitely one of our top homes so were pleased that you enjoyed your vacation with us.
Yes the 2 twin beds are at the top of the stairs on the second floor of the home, and there is plenty of beds to house actually up to 8 people, with the bed in the gazebo! We hope you come stay with us again in the future! -

We had a wonderful stay. The house was exceptionally well made and clean. The location was very private. The singing birds during the day and the crickets and frogs at night were very relaxing. It's a great location to stay while you visit the Volcano National Park. A few more utensils and basic spices would have been great in the kitchen because we did use the beatifully appointed kitchen. A very solid house...we would stay again!

This place is amazing. We are sitting here now at the dining room table surrounded by windows overlooking a dense beautiful jungle. The house itself is very updated, unique and warm (natural wood floor, custom carved balcony, slate flooring, travertine bath, rain showers, soaking whirlpool bath. We got here in pitch black darkness. We brought flashlights and found the cute little path to the house. As soon as he saw the home front patio, my son said "awesome." We opened the door and we all (family of 5) said awesome! Everything is comfortable and very clean. We made a fire in the slate fireplace and curled up on the pull out bed and fell asleep. There is also a king, 2 twins, a futon type mattress upstairs. And tonight my son and I are sleeping in the outdoor enclosed gazebo which is surrounded by windows and has a large overhead glass ceiling. It rains in the mornings and you wake up to a gentle patter on the leaves around you. There are so many windows but you really cannot see other houses as the jungle is so dense. Very convenient to Volcano National Park and local restaurants. We are definatly coming back and will recommend to friends.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay at one of our finest newest homes. It's personally my favorite because of the forest all around with the wraparound deck and natural wood look. The gazebo is a plus too! We hope to have you stay with us again soon!

Our family of two adults and two children (aged 8 & 10) stayed for 3 nights in May - the only negative was that we didn't stay longer. The house was private, exceptionally clean and incredibly comfortable. We spent the days exploring the Volcano National Park and looked forward to arriving "home" of an evening. We utilised the well equipped kitchen to eat in most nights.
We arrived late in the afternoon and we couldn't find the key where we were told it would be and had to make phone calls back to the manager to get in. This was not pleasant as it was wet, cold and we were tired after a long day touring. However, the problem was immediately rectified and we were told how to access the key. We were lucky we had a mobile phone with international roaming turned on or we would have had to go looking for a phone box.
We would recommend this house to any of our friends and we hope to come back if we ever return to the Big Island.Response from Joey Gutierrez - 07/07/2011
