Left on 04/10/2013 for a stay in April 2013
We stayed here with our daughter, her husband, 2 grandsons (4 & 6) and us two Grannies. From the moment we entered we were thrilled. Clean, beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, everything available we could want - flashlights and rain ponchos for volcano watching- comfy beds, a wood stove to beat the chill air. We will return on our next trip to Volcano.

Oxnard, CaliforniaBeautiful and Relaxing Country Retreat at Volcano Np's doorstep
Left on 03/18/2013 for a stay in February 2013
This is a beautiful rental cabin/cottage with a spacious upstairs master bedroom and 2 nice guest bedrooms downstairs. The kitchen and the entire cabin and bathrooms are so nice and very gorgeous. There are a couple bird feeders outside that provide relaxing entertainment. We saw many friendly country pheasants wandering around the house with many different beautiful song birds paying us visits through out the day. It was a very quiet and nice neighborhood and we very much enjoyed how close the cottage is to the Volcano National Park visitor's entrance. Very convenient for getting up early to go hiking just down the road at the park or for quick night drives to see the orange glowing Volcano steam/smoke/gasses at night from the Jagger Museum.
If you drive or walk around the neighborhood you might even see a couple wild turkey's. They like to hang out around a house down the loop road across from the main entrance road into the neighborhood.
The only draw back was it was a bit cold at night at the cottage in February and there was many days of rain, so be sure to pack proper rain gear and cold weather clothes in the winter. There were some nice space heaters in the closets that could be used if necessary but we never really needed them once we got under the covers which were plenty warm. There is also a stove heater that we didn't get around to testing out but it would probably be a nice way to keep warm at night if we were desperate. The cooler weather though was a blessing most of the time though when hiking around the volcano area and seeing the sights.
Compared to staying at a resort somewhere in Kuna or near Hilo we definitely would recommend this amazing Cottage near Volcano National Park instead. Especially if you're more into checking out the Volcano than going shopping and dining. Its a bit of a drive to Kuna or the North west parts of the island from the cottage though so expect a day trip if you want to go up north or to the west, but for getting to Hilo and that part of the island its a bit shorter and you can see a lot and get back before its too late at night from where its located.
We loved having a kitchen so we can get groceries and eat in and not eat out all the time. There also was a farmer's market down the road in Volcano that we were able to check out and get some local food from which was a nice bonus. The cottage was so very nice and clean and we definitely will recommend it to anyone looking for a nice place to stay in the southern part of Hawaii. The free Wifi access was a great bonus too. It was nice to feel away from the crowds and busy resort areas but still be able to access the internet and there was cable tv and a big assortment of Dvds in the house to watch if you wanted to stay indoors and couch surf instead of enjoy the awesome outdoors, but we really didn't take advantage of the tv or dvds much with so much to see and do.
Joan at Country Goose BB is so kind and delightful to talk with. She is also so sweet and generous, and she offered for us to come join her for breakfast anytime we wanted while we stayed at the Cottage. Unfortunately, our busy sightseeing schedule never got us over for one of her famous breakfasts but next time we'll have to try it out.
If we ever get lucky enough to visit Hawaii again we'll definitely try to stay at the Cottage again or at another of Joan's from Country Goose BB properties. We definitely recommend it as a nice country retreat with all the amenities.Response from MARGARET SMITH PIERCE - 03/20/2013

Right from the start, we knew this stay was going to be something special. Joan always returned my emails quickly, professionally and answered all my questions clearly. Booking with her was easy.
I stayed at Pukeawe Cottage with two girlfriends for just two nights so we could spend a full day exploring Volcanoes National Park, but we all wish we could have stayed longer. The cottage is in pristine condition, very clean and lots of extra directions are left in the house book (make sure you read it!) The weather was quite cool and rainy for our visit (we felt quite blessed by Pele) so we took full advantage of the wood stove and many space heaters. We were completely cozy and comfortable.
Also loved to take advantage of the delicious breakfast at Joan's house, just a few minutes up the road. She sure knows how to take care of you!! We felt like family and can't wait to come back!
Volcanoes National Park is just a few minutes up the road. The winery is practically in your backyard and definitely worth a visit at happy hour. -

Wow...I dont even know where to begin. This place is amazing!!! For the price you pay, its unbelievable! I am very very picky when it comes to finding a place to stay, and of of course our budget. I will spend weeks researching and spend lots of time looking at lots pictures to determine if its a clean place because Im very afraid of bugs. This place is spotless clean! Also the place is very big and homey. There's even a fireplace, a rare thing to find in Hawaii. Cold places in the Big Island would have only a heater, but this place has a heater in each room and a fireplace in the living room. Cant even think of anything this place doesn't have. It's just minutes away from the volcano national park, winery and a golf course. I would definitely recommend this place!

Left on 11/21/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Having this entire house at our disposal was fabulous! Well stocked with videos, kitchen supplies galore and wonderfully comfortable beds. It was so nice to be close to the Volcano Park in the evening and not have to drive and drive to see the volcano at night! Not to mention the amazing breakfast awaiting us in the morning. Great value happening here and you couldn't ask for better. Clear directions, easy to find and excellent location on top of the great accommodations and breakfast!

Calgary ABQuiet Country Escape near Volcano National Park
Left on 11/03/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Spacious cottage had everything we needed and more. Kitchen and pantry were stocked with lots of extra spices and condiments plus flashlights and umbrellas needed for trekking into Volcano Park. So close to the park and very convenient to go back to Jaggar Museum at night to view the volcano then.
It was decorated in such a way that it felt like coming home at the end of the day; well, maybe better than home because it was so clean! Beds were comfortable, couch was great for watching a movie, and the wood stove was used every evening. Outside space is great for either soaking in the sun on a quiet bench, eating at the picnic table, or taking a leisurely stroll.
Joan at Country Goose provided a delicious breakfast each morning. She was hospitable, funny, and a wealth of knowledge. Mahalo for a great experience! -

Toronto, CanadaCharming, clean, and fully stocked Pukeawe cottage with breakfas
Left on 10/25/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My family (elderly parents, husband, brother and his wife), all stayed recently at Pukeawe cottage. It was immaculate and well stocked. Not only was it spacious enough for three couples to have their privacy in their own rooms, it was well laid out so that we could gather in the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The kitchen was very handy as there are limited restaurant options and quite pricier than we see at home.
Our family is particularly discerning, but we found the cottage charming, thoughtfully stocked, very clean, with quality amenities. The property is well cared for and maintained. There was hardwood floors throughout the common area and low-pile carpets in the bedrooms. The plumbing all worked well, and provided plenty of flow, with an on-site water purifier.
There were many throws, blankets, towels, and quality sheets, but even with the chilly evenings, we didn't need to use the extras. The kitchen had quality appliances and utensils. The pantry was well stocked with things you wouldn't think of purchasing (like spices, soy sauce, dish washing soap, laundry soap etc.
There was a complete library of up-to-date Dvds (though after our full days, we were too bushed to watch any), travel guides, etc. We made use of the flashlights (for night volcano viewing), bandages (my father fell during an outing), and the oh-so-handy washing/drying machines.
Joan's daily breakfast was completely filling with fruit (usually apple banana and papaya), pancakes / french toast / waffles with whipped cream and homemade preserves, scrambled eggs, sausages.
The cottage is well situated close to the volcano (don't forget to go at night or before sunrise to see the red glow), coffee and macadamia plantations, gardens, black beach, turtles, etc.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it's a complete wonder that Joan has the energy to feed and host so many cottages at the country Goose.
We'd highly recommend this vacation rental. One thing I found a little disconcerting at other vacation rental places was that they expected a full deposit up front - which I don't like if I've never stayed there. Except for one night deposit - which I thought was reasonable, Joan treated the payment options like any reputable hotel would (ie credit card for one night deposit). She also accommodated an early morning check-in - which was very much appreciated, as the flights come in at 7am to Hilo.
Everyone enjoyed our stay, and it kicked off a marvelous 2 week trip to Hawaii. -

Our stay at the Pukeawe Cottage was wonderful. The cottage is beautifully decorated and comfortable. We enjoyed the breakfasts with Joan at the Country Goose. She was very warm and friendly and made a special meal each morning. Meeting folks who were staying nearby made the adventure even more fun. The location was very close to the Volcano National Park entrance and also close to the little village of Volcano.

HonoluluPeaceful vacation in an excellent cottage!
Left on 01/04/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My parents were visiting my husband and me in Honolulu, and we decided to take them to Volcano over New Year's weekend. We've stayed at another rental through Country Goose Inn before, so decided to rent Pukeawe Cottage through Joan at the Country Goose Inn.
The cottage was more beautiful than the pictures, beautifully decorated for christmas. It was very well equipped in terms of kitchen supplies- cooking utensils, plates, glasses, wine glasses, crockpot, blender, coffee maker, toaster, you name it. In addition, there were basic spices and oils, snacks, and teas/coffees/hot chocolate. There were two full bedrooms with 2 full baths, and another smaller bedroom with a day bed. Beds were so comfortable! The living and dining areas were large and comfortable, and we enjoyed the wood stove fires every night. Lots of games and Dvds also made the weekend so much fun.
The location was easy access to the Volcano Village and to the National Park. The Volcano Winery and a golf course were on the same street. The neighborhood is very peaceful, nice for walks.
Breakfasts at Country Goose Inn are amazing and come with the rental.
We would come back and bring more guests in the future!
