My family and I stayed here for 5 days and we were happy to find out that this condo unit is exactly as it looks in the pictures. It was clean, well stocked and just enough space for me and my family. We appreciated the conveniences of having wi-fi access and the free parking pass because finding parking around Waikiki can be quite difficult. We also liked the fact that the condo was in a great location in Waikiki. We were across the street from Starbucks, the aBC store, Mc Donalds, and a short walking distance to the International Marketplace, Duke's, the Royal Hawaiian Center and the beach! Also, the bus stop is right in front of the Royal Kuhio so a car isn't necessary. The only downside was that since it is in the heart of Waikiki, it can get a little noisy at night when you're trying to get some sleep. But the noise didn't bother us at all because the queen beds were comfortable. Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and would recommend this place to anyone! My family and I would definitely stay here again.

The Royal Kuhio is an older condo apartment, but is well maintained in a great location to Waikiki and the beach. This is one of the nicer one bedroom units that has very comfortable furnishings, a separate bedroom with two queens, plenty of closet space, air conditioning and a full kitchen, including dishwasher. Very secure building and parking lot. Everything worked well and was great. The air conditioner does a good job of masking the loud Saturday night/Sunday morning revelers partying at the bar next door. The free wifi and free parking is a real plus if you compare prices at other condos. Nice deck but only a city view. This was very reasonably priced including the cleaning fee and tax.
BUT this is Hawaii, so you will have cock roaches! This is a condo, so you will not have maid service of fresh linens replenished during your stay.! That's just a fact, but nice laundry facilities are available. Our one disappointment was that the pool was closed the entire nine days that we were there for refinishing. It looked clean, bright and inviting the day we left! Thank you for the comments. They help us in our continuing efforts to improve and meet or exceed guest satisfaction. The building has quarterly pest control services and we schedule professional services as needed between building services. However, we do recommend not leaving food on the tables, counters, etc. All our units are equipped with dishwashers, for which we supply detergent, so we recommend putting used dishes and utensils (after rinsing them) in the dishwasher and running it before leaving the apartment . I think probably the most important thing to keep in mind when you're booking a place in Waikiki is location, and this condo (at the Royal Kuhio) is right in the middle of Waikiki, a block from the International Marketplace. It's also near a bunch of great food places. Da Falafel King's food cart is only a block down and is a must try. But anyway, this is a review about the unit itself, so I will just say we were very pleased. This unit (10th floor corner) was very clean. The bedroom was large -- two queen beds with closets on both walls, plus a large dresser with a TV. The kitchen was very nice - new, updated, with four bar stools and a large countertop for eating or using a laptop. Now, the bathtub was a little blah, but the water pressure was terrific. The toilet (hey, it's a consideration) was fantastic. It even had a heated seat and bidet controls!
A big plus if you're traveling with kids is that this unit (on the corner) has a kitchen which directly overlooks the swimming pool. From the 10th floor, you can check on your kids. Kinda neat.
As for downsides, you have to pay for any maid service -- even towel washing. We declined. The wall air conditioners were meh. The one in the bedroom's pretty quiet, but the living room a/C unit is old and sputters water all over the balcony (which has two chairs and a table). Lastly, like most places on Waikiki, this unit has those shutter-style windows. A lot of road/people made it into the unit, even with the a/C units blasting. We're all heavy sleepers, so we were fine, but if you're prone to complain about noise, you'll need to book in a place with solid windows.
The parking space for this unit is on the top floor of the parking garage. This means it'll take at least 5 minutes for you to wind your way up/down. Annoying, but the garage is secure and gated.
Check-in and check-out were a breeze. Elevators were okay. Laundry area was huge. All in all, the price was a steal for a place this size.Response from Akiko Katakura Starts International Hawaii, Inc - 07/26/2011
