Just like home but with a view

Left on 08/23/2012 for a stay in August 2012

This review is being written by someone who has never rented a condo and quite frankly never wanted to rent a condo. When I go on vacation, I want to feel like it is a vacation, no cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. I should also mention that I have Diamond status with Hilton and Hyatt, so the hotel room we get is usually an upgrade. With that being said, this time I had to rent a condo because I was staying for over three weeks and I needed kitchen facilities. My daughter was attending classes all day and did not have restaurants close by, so bring her lunch was required. I will admit I was just a bit nervous renting a condo and hoping the photos were current and I was not in store for a let down when I arrived, you know, the old bait and switch. I did extensive research and settled on Four Paddle Unit #2405 that was offered by Captain Cook Vacation Rentals. I went by the photos and the one review that was over a year old. I was hesitant because there was only one old review, but I went with my gut and boy was I pleased. I chose this unit for several reasons: it had an ice maker in the refrigerator, it had a washer and dryer in the unit, it had an awesome view, it had a large flat panel tv, and the amenities from the photos seemed to meet our needs. Now for what I found when I arrived and stayed for 23 days.

I met Paul from Captain Cook in the lobby of the building upon my arrival. The process Captain Cook has in place worked great. I called Paul when we arrived and he promptly met us at the condo. My first thought at seeing the Four Paddle building left a huge know in my stomach. The lobby was a small space with 20+ year old white wicker furniture. This is what I dreaded. An underwhelming lobby could only mean the online photos of the unit were old and altered, right? Well, I have learned a valuable lesson and that you cannot judge a book by its cover. Unit 2405 was just as advertised and maybe even better. Upon entering, the blinds were open and what I saw was a dead on view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. This view is visible from the bedroom and main living area. The condo had every conceivable item you might need. Rice cooker, potato masher, can opener, pitcher for juice, nice selection of plastic containers to store food, large selection of pots and pans, barbeque utensils, silverware specifically for use at the barbeque, beach chairs, beach towels, a hand cart to bring up large items from the garage, and more plates, glasses, cups, and silverware than you could imagine. The beds were very comfortable. The bedroom had a queen bed that I was hesitant about as I have a king at home, but it was plenty large and very comfy. The sofa bed had a very comfortable and high quality air system mattress. It was kind of a pain to blow it up and deflate every day, but it only took seconds to do. Did I mention there was secure parking that wasn’t an additional charge? There is also ample storage in the bedroom in the dressers and the closet is stocked with hangers and a whole side that is full of shelves. The bathroom also has a ton of storage. I cannot explain the feeling when I saw what would be my home for the next 23 days. I felt so comfortable and so at home. What I have found out is that the owners of this unit actually use it, so that explains the reason for everything being so well thought out and stocked. We never ran out of plates or silverware. Imagine renting a place and having only four plates and glasses. Really, who does that? From the research I did, apparently there are a lot of rentals that do. We had a few problems getting the t.v. to work, the wireless internet was shaky the first day, but a call to Paul quickly resolved our problem. The only suggestion I have would be to make the wireless a secure connection. A simple password could be added that would make guests feel more secure. Not a huge deal, just a suggestion. Also, there are plenty of towels, but there are not really extra sheets.

The Four Paddle is about a 10 minute walk to the beach. Since it is centrally located, you have your choice of beach and all are about equidistant. We varied it and went to the beach by Dukes/Royal Hawaiian or the beach by the Hilton. The lawn chairs in the unit had carrying straps so that made it very easy to walk to the beach. The pool area is okay. A standard pool with plenty of chairs, nothing fancy, but very adequate. The barbeque area was great. There are three gas grills, plenty of tables, and there is even a refrigerator and microwave there. We used it and really enjoyed being able to sit outside and have dinner.

The only downside to renting this unit is that it must be rented in 30 day increments from Captain Cook. I was only there 23 days and lost a week on my rental, but it was still less expensive than renting for 23 days from some of the other popular buildings in Waikiki. I would highly recommend losing time on a rental if the cost is comparable or better at unit 2405. Also, during our stay, the Four Paddle building association had their annual meeting as notes were posted in the elevators. To my surprise, what do you think was on the agenda, lobby remodel. Yup, my biggest disappointment was the lobby and by the time we left, there were notes in the elevator indicating that the lobby remodel would be started in the coming weeks.

I cannot recommend this unit enough. The three of us hated to leave. I have been to Oahu many times and usually go a few times per year. My fears of condo rental have been completely removed thanks to unit 2405 in the Four Paddle. Having a kitchen and laundry available isn’t such a bad thing after all. I came home with all clean laundry and didn’t have the usual six loads of wash to do upon returning home. I have to admit, having a chair to sit in at night, not having to get ice down the hall in a bucket, coming home with tons of dirty clothes or worse yet, having to leave the room because housekeeping needs to get in are big plusses recognized by renting a condo. If I am fortunate enough to come back for an extended period of time, I will no doubt rent this unit. Thanks to the great folks at Captain Cook and to the owners of this unit. You made our inaugural stay in a condo a very positive experience.

Great Place to stay in Waikiki

Left on 08/02/2011 for a stay in July 2011

This was our first stay at the Four Paddle and loved the location and suite!
We tried to vacuum but the vacuum wasn't working properly. The suite was very well equipped and we found it only needed a pitcher for juice.
Overall this was one of the best places we've stayed and we would recommend it to anyone planning a vacation on Oahu.
We will definitely book this suite on our next trip.
