Carmel, INHale Hoku is wonderful!
Left on 04/10/2013 for a stay in April 2013
This was the second time we have stayed at Hale Hoku. You are just across the "street" from the beach (which most of the time you have entirely to yourself!). The neighborhood is quiet yet friendly. You can walk to Hanalei Colony, drive or walk (on beach or road) to Tunnels Beach (our favorite). And it is a short yet beautiful drive into Hanalei. The best feature of Hale Hoku, though is the huge lanai. You can see and hear the waves crashing on the beach in front of you, then look behind you for a breath-taking view of the mountains. I'm sure we'll be back soon!

We've stayed at Hale Hoku twice, in 2011 and 2013. When we stayed 2 years ago, I wrote a review listing some things that really needed to be improved. We were very happy this year to see that Na Pali Properties had addressed every single issue -- new knives, coolers, grill, citrus juicer, serving plates, etc. It even looked like the spider webs on the lanai were cleared before we got there! We like to cook when we're in Kauai and this house has everything one could want to make a feast. This is a comfortable house to stay in, with its fans, big sliding doors/windows, and large lanai. It has a beautiful lawn with lovely flowers and trees and it's only a few steps away from the beach. It's not a 'luxury' vacation rental (more Hawaiian-themed artwork on the walls would be a nice touch) but that's not what we're looking for. Na Pali Properties is easy to deal with -- when we found there were no grilling utensils, they let us buy some and will reimburse us when they return our deposit. I do wonder, though, why it takes them more time than other rental agents to return deposits. Not a big deal, but they could be quicker. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Hale Hoku. Loved discovering the hidden Meyer lemon tree this year.

great location on the north shore. the beach is steps away, and while it's not swimmable, if you turn left and walk about 5-10 minutes, the water opens up.
tunnels is our favorite beach spot and it's only a 5-minute drive from the house. you might need to rent snorkeling gear though, the house only had one set of fins. -

San FranciscoQuiet, Comfortable Retreat
Left on 12/08/2012 for a stay in November 2012
The home was excellent - clean and well appointed. We did a lot of cooking at home so very much enjoyed the BBQ, the well stocked kitchen (utensils, appliances, pots, pans, etc.). We were very thankful for all the fans (both ceiling and floor) since it could get hot in the afternoon. The house was only 5 miles from town - however, it took about 15 minutes to get to town (not a bad thing just something to be aware of). We couldn't figure out some of the light switches - either they weren't attached to something or didn't work. I also could not find a smoke detector which was a small concern. Na Pali Properties was very helpful and made it very easy to check in and check out. Overall a great experience.

Gilbert, AZHeavenly Hale Hoku
Left on 11/27/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This was our first visit to Kauai and Hale Hoku was our first "home" there. The house was beautiful - even more impressive than the pictures. The house is large and very convenient, stocked with everything we needed. We had been provided with instructions for check-in, directions to the house and the property management company, and all was simple and convenient. The Napali Properties Management employees were very friendly and helpful, quick to respond to any requests we had, answering questions and just overall very pleasant to deal with. The house is in a very peaceful setting, surrounded by tropical plants, flowers, and birds. The view from the house is beautiful, the large lanai great to sit and relax on, and it was a very short, easy walk to the Beach. (You can hear the surf and could see the ocean if it weren't for all the tropical plants in the way!!! :-). We stayed 8 days/nights, hated to have to leave, and would love to be able to stay here again. That North Shore area is just a very pleasant, relaxed, beautiful place. At the end of our month-long 2-island trip, our very favorite place was Hanalei and Hale Hoku!!!

House being on stilts gave us the feeling of being in treehouse among the many cardinals who visit daily.
House fully furnished with appliances and kitchen gadgets one does not usually get in a "Time Share" rental. Clean with updated applicances. Bed comfortable.
Books to read and floats and snorkle equipment. Great to have WiFi too. Could not fine the iron! Found the board but not the iron. -

Love staying at Hale Hoku, and will stay there again in the future. Great access to beach for sunrise and sunset, walking distance to Tunnels Beach for snorkeling. This property is in a quiet neighborhood with a great wrap around porch to relax on and listen to the waves.
Na Pali Properties was great to work with super friendly and no worries. The only thing I can think of that was missing is a griddle for my yummy banana macadamia nut pancakes. -

Left on 04/30/2012 for a stay in July 2011
After spending a couple of days in Haena, we knew the next year we wanted to stay there. We found this house and decided to share it with friends who were familiar with the area as well. The location is ideal, but the house was in disrepair. The price should have given us a clue, it was inexpensive for the area, and you get what you pay for. Screen doors fell off; cooking pans, glassware and utensils were of the worst quality; spiderwebs were in every crevice on the front deck which was covered in plastic roofing that was full of dirt. We were one row back so there was little in the ocean view department, but the walk to the beach down the path was gorgeous. The back deck would have been a great place to star gaze had there been furniture to do so. There was one plastic chair. The BBQ was a sad, sad, tiny charcoal grill. And there were no extra fun beach things. The good stuff - it was spacious, the washer/dryer worked, the grounds were beautiful and the beaches there are amazing. Honestly, with about $500-1000, the place could be so much better. Just needs some serious TLC.

Carmel, INParadise!
Left on 04/18/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Kauai is our favorite place in the world, especially the north shore and Hanalei! Hale Hoku was the perfect house in the perfect location for us: beautiful, quite, and remote. Plus, it is an amazing value only steps from the beach in one direction, and a jaw-dropping mountain view in the other. It is a great rental for families, with a large yard and spacious decks.
Service from Na Pali properties was very friendly and very good. It was convenient to stop by their office in Hanalei to pick up the keys.
We definitely will be back to Kauai and won't hesitate trying to book this property again. -

Whispering Pines, NCFour Weeks at Hale Hoku
Left on 03/15/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We had four interesting weeks at Hale Hoku with sun and clouds and then almost a solid week of rain. 42 inches in one 4 day period with roads closed repeatedly and power out for 36 hours. The house is comfortable, a little worn but would go there again. There were several things missing but the people at NaPali Realty were very responsive in correcting the situation.

With the beach just footsteps away down a beautiful path and a wraparound lanai that beckons you to relax and play ukelele... what could be not to like? The yard is enormous. The house is quiet and private and there were lots of extras provided by generous prior tenants...like new beach chairs and snorkel gear and beach mats. This remote stretch of Kauai is a slice of Heaven on Earth and Hale Hoku provided the space to refresh and re-energize. Mahalo Napali Properties for offering us this home away from home!

Tucson, AZA pleasing budget rental option.
Left on 10/21/2011 for a stay in September 2011
Hale Hoku isn't maintained to the highest level, but the budget rent makes up for most of the shortcomings. Unfortunate shortcomings included the non-fuctioning lighting on the exterior stairs (a definite hazard for my 94 year old mother) and window covering in the downstairs unit being corroded in the up position (no privacy whatsoever for downstairs occupants at night). On the plus side, one of the upstairs screen doors was damaged when we arrived, and Na Pali Properties arranged to have it replaced during our visit. Another plus, the kitchen is very well equiped - even an ice cream maker, which is a real treat when the lilikoi and strawberry guava are ripe and ready to pick. The master bed is comfy and affords a fine mountain view, the twin beds have about lived-out their utility. The beach is but a short walk on the beach access path across the residential street from the property. And it is quiet, being a couple blocks off the "highway". Nice garden and mountain views, even a sliver of ocean can be seen from the makai Lana'i. Despite the condition issues, Hale Hoku is the bargain compared to other properites in the Ha'ena area.

MontanaA Week at the Beach
Left on 04/16/2011 for a stay in March 2011
Hale Hoku was everything we'd hoped for, and even more. This property was a terrific value. Situated across the street from a public beach access, it was less than 5 minutes to Tunnels Beach, some of the best snorkeling on the island. We saved at least $1000 compared to other beachfront properties we'd looked at but we were close enough to see & hear the surf.
The property was clean, well-maintained and offered plenty of space and privacy for 2 couples and a teenager. When not out exploring the beach or trails we spent most of our time on the wonderful 2nd story deck. Coffee in the morning, a good book in the evening - we could glimpse the beach over the tree-tops and hear the surf pounding from the deck. The comfy patio furniture was all too inviting. The house is situated in a quiet neighborhood, a mix of other rental properties and private homes.
The kitchen was well-furnished and we cooked in most nights. Stock up at Costco when you arrive and there's great fish at the local market in Princeville.
A great space to call home for a week, whether your the type to be on-the-go as we were or lazing about and just relaxing! -

Anchorage, AlaskaGreat Location
Left on 03/03/2011 for a stay in February 2011
Overall, we had a really good experience at Hale Hoku. The house is in an ideal location (great neighborhood; quiet, peaceful) with excellent access to Kepuhi beach (just steps away). It has a very nice yard with flowers (love all the plumeria), the house is spacious, the lanais are large. My husband and I have some suggestions for improvement if you're open to listening to them:
-buy a new, better quality knife set (if people are renting a house, they want to cook a lot of their own meals. Even after sharpening those knives, I couldn't cut a pineapple. That large 'chef's' knife is flimsy and cheap)
-buy a few medium size serving platters larger than dinner plate size
-buy a few serving bowls and get rid of the heavy lead crystal bowls
-buy a vase or two (people buy flowers when they visit Hawaii)
-kitchen shears/scissors
-the grill is rusted at the vents and the legs and ash pan are falling apart -- really needs to be replaced
-buy a simple juicer for squeezing limes/lemons
-replace the small, soft cooler (the zippers don't work)
-buy a large cooler
-non-slip things for the bathtubs
-relocate all of the zipper spiders on the lanai (just kidding, but there are a lot of them)
I think that all rental companies should send one of their employees to live/cook meals on the property for 10-14 days. That way, you can see what you would like to have in a house if you were on vacation. We rent a house because we love to be off the beaten path and absolutely love Haena. We also love to cook our own meals and enjoy the local produce from the farmers' markets and fresh fish from the Dolphin Fish Market. Hale Hoku has a pretty well-appointed kitchen (blender, fairly new set of pots and pans, mixing bowls, plenty of plates and glasses, nice little rice cooker, salad spinner, etc.), but those knives are absolutely terrible (actually, quite dangerous because they are so dull).

Tokyogreat value lodge by the beach
Left on 01/28/2011 for a stay in December 2010
We stayed Dec 20-25, 5 adults and 2 kids (1.5 and 3 years old), occupying the whole lodge. What the picture can't show is how nice and flowery the garden is. Also the beach is less than 100 footsteps away, and we can peak at the sea from the balcony. The lodge was really well-equipped, we had dinners and barbecues on the balcony or round the big table by the island kitchen, loads of space inside and in the property for the kids to play around and for seniors (3 grandparents) to relax. Not a luxury property but definitely what i would like to have for that sort of stay with kids (they didn't break nor damage anything but you never know).

Left on 07/14/2010 for a stay in June 2010
The property management was friendly and helpful and the cleaning person was super nice. We rented the second floor and the breezes were great. Plenty of room and anemities. The place was clean but outdated. If you want new, don't stay here. I would definitely stay here again as it is private, quiet, spacious and super close to the beach. Great overall experience.
