Description from the manager

Unusual, intimate and a little wild [and quite unique], A River House is situated in the Wainiha Valley, two acres are still primal jungle and one acre is gardened to include the flower- rimmed pools and a fresh river plunge. There is a profusion of edible fruits: coconut, avocado, orange, lychee, banana, papaya, lime, tangerine, starfruit, mountain apple, longan and eggfruit. From the lanai of the main building, two watercourses are immediately evident: a stream cascading melodically into three pools and a wider rock-strewn river roiling its way down to the nearby ocean. The property has three available buildings that are not rented separat...Read more

      Beyond our greatest imaginings

Left on 10/08/2012 for a stay in September 2012

The turn-in to the driveway takes your breath away at first with its steepness, as you glide down into an ancient fertile valley that engulfs all your senses. Four of us (2 couples) shared the estate and it worked out great. Privacy, and wonderful communal space to hang out and make meals. A magical place that embraces with a special energy, tucked in the valley of Wainiha river that starts on Mt. Waialeale. Gorgeous grounds--more than 2 acres beautifully gardened, flowers and fruit abound. Beautifully appointed with views from every room and a fabulous deck with a grill. Light the citronella candles and bugs leave you alone. The rushing water soothes so much that we invited a local masseuse to make a house call for a girls' spa day. The guys loved the place too. Art and artifacts in the home are treasures to delight in--noticing different ones each day. Breezes flowing through all the sliding screen doors, moon rising over the mountain crest across the river, light changing minute by minute, hour by hour makes you reluctant to leave. Wi Fi works great if you need your computer. Cell phone service comes and goes, but house phone is great for local calls to make reservations. Neighbors are friendly, the local pigs, roosters, chickens, and goats are a hoot and yes, you hear them in the middle of the night, but get used to it quickly and it becomes a lullabye. ChuChee the resident kitty knows who likes kitties and if she chooses to become your fast friend, it's a blessing. Sweet beyond words, quiet as can be, clean to a fault. She snuggles up once she gets to know you. Leaving her was as hard as leaving the house. Off the beaten path and full of heart and soul. Close to the spectacular Limahuli Gardens, Hanalei, Ke'e Beach, Tunnels Beach, Bali Hai, great boat tours leaving from the North Shore, spectacular ziplining at Princeville Ranch. We hope to be back sooner rather than later to this special retreat.

      Beauty off the beaten path

Left on 09/26/2012 for a stay in September 2012

If you are interested in something other than a resort hotel experience for your stay on Kauai, A River House is something for you to consider. It sits about 3/4 mile off the main road just outside of beautiful Hanalei town. The compound consists of the main house and guest house with full baths, and smaller guest house with a half-bath only. The kitchen is well equipped for those who enjoy cooking. On the grounds are numerous fruit trees, and there is a stream that runs by close enough that you can hear it at night as you fall asleep. The main house has an interesting collection of books, Cd's and Dvd's to entertain you when you are not out and about, but what we liked best was sitting out on the deck, feeling the breeze blowing, and watching the sunlight play on the nearby hills. All in all, it was a beautiful home that I would not hesitate to recommend.

Beautiful house, paradise-like setting and a cat!

Left on 08/18/2012 for a stay in August 2012

It's like staying in a botanical garden. Every morning we'd walk the property and discover something new had bloomed. The grounds are simply breathtaking and so private & quiet.

The house was very comfortable (what are those sheets made of? So silky, but not in that cheesy rayon way.) It was always cool with excellent air circulation.
We loved sitting on the lanai having our morning coffee & watching the birds swoop among the treetops with the river roiling below.

      Things to be aware of:
      1) Don't plan to hang around the house on Fridays: the landscapers come & they make a lot of noise for about 4 hours. (Just from looking at the place, you know it's got to take a lot of manhours to keep it that nice.)
      2) Chu-Chee is a great cat, but he may drag something rather unpleasant up on the porch if you're late one night getting home to feed him.
      3) There are geckoes in the house. I don't mind them, but when you wake in the morning there will be gecko droppings everywhere. My son was driven from the bird's nest due to a family of 5 scampering across him nightly. I don't know how they get in (we never left the screens open), but I think they're just part of the experience of living in a tropical jungle. It's a small price to pay and it's probably true of any place in such a location. I mention so that you are not unduly dismayed thinking that they're rat droppings as I thought for the first 2 days (see note about Chu-Chee dragging unsavory things onto the porch, his previous night's dinner put the thought in my mind).
      4) You'll save yourself some hassle if you put the outdoor garbage can up in the back of the truck to secure it. We had dogs get into the cans twice during our week stay and awoke to a yard strewn with garbage. Not a fun way to start the day.

It's truly an amazing place and we really enjoyed our stay there. My 4-star rating for cleanliness relates to the floors and rugs. They could use a good cleaning. Everything else was in great shape!

      Great piece of property

Left on 08/08/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed at the Beach House for a portion of our honeymoon and had a wonderful time. There is ample yard space, plenty of room for large families and the scenery is unbelievable. The house is a short drive from Hanalei Bay as long as there is not too much traffic on the one lane bridges. We had a great time and recommend it highly. The only downsides were the mosquitoes which seemed to be worst between dusk and dawn, the blender was a bit warped and leaked like a sieve (also looked like the seal hadn't been washed in ages) and there was a bag of trash on the driveway and behind the house. Regarding the trash, I think the previous tenants put the trash in the back of a pick-up that lives on the property instead of taking it up to the top of the driveway. We saw a few goats roaming the road so I assumed some animal got to those bags. It was so beautiful and comfortable we could not rate the Beach House anything less than five stars.

      A relaxing retreat

Left on 07/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012

I really loved how relaxing it was to be at the river house. There were six of us, so each group of two had their own house and privacy. The kitchen has pretty much all the tools you need and was great for cooking every night. ChuChee the cat made the place feel more like home because it was like we had our own pet.

Location was a bit remote... so on the days we traveled to other parts of the island, we had to get up a bit early. However, on the plus side, there were very few tourists in the area and little to no real world distractions (most of us didn't have cell reception... I thought that was great). The house now has wifi, which was helpful for everyone.

There was also pretty much everything you needed for the beach in the fun closet. There were chairs, beach mats, a cooler, toys... we really didn't need to bring anything for the beach because it was all there.

We did have one issue with ants. We were religiously cleaning the counters; however, if you left a spec of food out there would be ants on the counter. Wiping down the counters again usually made them go away, but it is something to be aware of.

We stayed in July together with a friend and it was perfect because the guest house provided absolute privacy for our friend. We enjoyed the wonderful garden and peace of the place. The house provides everything you need for your holiday and the housekeeper as well as the people of Na Pali took good care of us. Thank you!

Yes, it is as beautiful as it looks in the pictures! The only negative was that we had to leave, eventually. A River House didn't feel like a guest house, it felt like a home; from the lovingly tended tropical gardens to the beautifully decorated interiors and even a resident cat who is happy to adopt newcomers. There was a temptation to spend all of our time on Kauai lounging around the house and its grounds, but if you do venture out there are some great things to do in the area...snorkelling at nearby beaches and some great hiking trails. It was a little drive to the nearest town and beaches (a car is a must) but I would happily sacrifice the convenience of the southern beaches to stay in a place like this again.

Amazing location, amazing landscaping, very open layout. It's on a residential street off the beaten path, which is exactly what we were looking for. The 3 houses are great to have to spread out. We had 8 people total, 4 adults and 4 kids. We were very comfortable. The property is just serene. Be ready for mosquitos at dawn and dusk. Other than that, no complaints. Oh, except we showed up at 3pm for check in, and it wasn't ready until 4pm. No big deal, just a heads up.

Left on 07/29/2011 for a stay in July 2011

The River House is an absolutely beautiful property with the huge yard and rivers. We felt like we were staying in a tropical garden! If you went outside, though, it was best to wear bug spray. At night, the kids would go out and look for geckos and toads. The houses slept 8 of us comfortably. My son and I especially liked the screened in room. Chu Chee was adorable and all the kids loved her. She slept with my daughter in the bedroom in the main house. We spent our days at Tunnels Beach, and eating shave ice in Hanalei. Thanks for sharing your home! :)

      Wonderful River House

Left on 07/21/2011 for a stay in July 2011

We visited Kauai for two weeks, staying at the River House the second week after a week on anini Beach. It was far and away the better of the two houses, and I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. The house is beautiful, open, airy and clean, with a kitchen meant for people who like to cook. The beautifully landscaped property is designed for peace and relaxation, and unless the neighbors are running machinery, that's just what you get. We enjoyed limes, papayas and mountain apples that were ripe the first week in July. The views of the jagged, cloud-swept mountains is dramatic and always changing. The house cat, Chu-chee, is very sweet, and has his routine down. NaPali Properties was very helpful, and the owners, who live in alaska, seem like very interesting people. Being that it was just the two of us, we didn't much use the other buildings. There is a nice desk set-up in the larger guest house, which came in handy as I had to work part of every day. The internet connection is solid and fast, which was great. The house is a little over a mile off the main road, but the location is great for quick trips to Tunnels and Ke'e beaches. I highly recommend the River House and look forward to a return visit. If only it wasn't so far from Vermont...

      Something like Eden

Left on 07/13/2011 for a stay in June 2011

This was an amazing place. We stayed for a week with our 5 teenage and older kids. It was a bit of a squeeze, but we loved it. The grounds are like Eden--beautiful, lush, splashing streams, flowers, fruit trees. A view of the mountains up the valley from your deck. Nice big open main area for hanging out as a family. Tunnels and Ke'e and Hanalei really close. Away from the crowds and resorts. Isolated but close enough to town to get groceries or go out to dinner. One of our favorite places ever. Only drawbacks--in an amazingly well furnished kitchen, there is no dishwasher, which gets tiring if you eat all meals in as we do. Screens and screen doors could use a bit of upkeep. But, these minor blemishes were overwhelmed with the beauty and tranquility of staying at this home.

      Amazing!

Left on 04/16/2011 for a stay in April 2011

We loved 'The River House'! We know amanda (have only met Rocky) and this house and property exuded her 'earth mama', mellow, beauty. The grounds were extraordinary, and the house itself airy, comfortable and beautiful. We loved Chu-Chee the cat! However, I don't remember being asked if anyone in our party was allergic to cats. We are not, and have a cat at home, so this made it even more homier! However, you might want to have that as a question to prospective renters. And you might! I just don't remember being asked. The stereo was fantastic, as was the music selection. Plus we were able to plug in our own music. I don't think there was one thing we didn't like. The view off the Lanai, the grounds, the river flowing just outside the house, everything was wonderful. It was a good place to relax and just enjoy the beauty of nature. We actually enjoyed the ride up Old PowerHouse Rd. It reminded us of being 'in the country', and off the beaten path, which we can relate to. The only downside was that we weren't there long enough! We hope to share this wonderful respite with our family (children & spouses) in the future. What we'd actually like, is to buy a piece of property just like this!!! We're are checking your website!! Thank you for a great visit.

The peaceful exhilaration of being comfortably on edge.

Left on 04/11/2011 for a stay in March 2011

You might be a character in an E.M. Foster novel -- so self-assured in the special security of your comfortable, privileged situation, and yet somehow feeling the need to be on the alert, not entirely certain, in these unfamiliar surroundings, of what to expect, again and again, in fact, surprised by unanticipated encounters and so kept suspended, always, in a slightly edgy state -- a state of obligatory heightened awareness. All here is manifestly arranged for your complete comfort and convenience. Everything is characterized by better quality; it works and it works well -- from the quiet overhead fans and the artfully aimed track lighting, to the well-fitting window screens and doors, the special soft bedsheets, the easy broadband connection, and the spotless outdoor washer/dryer. Everything you could possibly need has been thoughtfully -- tastefully -- provided. You want for nothing and so can at last simply sit back and listen to the astonishingly throaty sound of your river rushing by. But you have come a little further away from commerce and 'civilization' than you are accustomed to. The uphill road was longer and more enfolding with exotic foliage than you had expected. The night is darker, the moon and the stars are bigger, the sudden downpours are more violent, not all the birdcalls and the other forest sounds you hear are so readily identifiable, the fragrances of the flowers are headier, and the steep and jagged glistening green mountains up tight and all around you are wreathed in restless mists -- never content, it seems, to settle. Darting geckos compete to sun themselves on the warmest bolders in the garden and trees all around offer up prodigious quantities of fruits. You came for the peace and the quiet. But now you are at last alone here, and this is also an adventure.

The accommodations are so homey and comfortable, we couldn't wait to get back home after a day at the beach. Beautiful beaches and funky Hanalei town are nearby for some great food, shopping and fun. None of us were ready to leave...but we'll definitely be back!

      Surreal

Left on 10/22/2010 for a stay in October 2010

This being my 4th vacation to Kauai, I've rented many other properties and Bed/Breakfasts. This tops all of them! First, the north side of the Island beats any other side of the Island hands down, but this house and the 3 acre grounds is like being in your own private botanical gardens surrounded by mountains and streams. This is as real as Kauai gets. The location may not be suitable for everyone, as it's about as close you can get to the end of the road, away from it all, but if you're looking for real adventure and are truly appreciative of nature, this is a very spiritual place to spend your vacation. You can't go wrong staying here. It is absolutely beautiful and the property is very well cared for. We did not lack anything. And actually, the photos do not do it justice. I particularly loved the Ice Cream Bananas. Never heard or had them before. Puts all other bananas to shame. This place has so much to offer.

This was the best place we ever stayed. The house was very comfortable and well stocked. We mostly enjoyed coffee in the morning on the deck. The flowers in the yard were incredible and I was able to pick flowers for my daughter's wedding bouquet. She got married at the Hanelei Colony resort where they stayed for three nights and the remainder of the week she and her husband stayed in the darling guest house on the property. My only suggestion is to have the address at hte house more visable (the foilage is covering up the address which made it very difficult to find in the dark. And perhaps more info about the cat. We are not particularily cat lovers although we did end up liking the cat but were not prepared when she broke through a screen and jumped on the bed in the middle of the night. But the cat is a sweetheart and didn't seem to mind being put outside,
We asked NaPali properties about a crib rental-they hooked us up with a company who set up the bed before we got there and picked it up when scheduled..
I was a bit apprehensive about mosquitoes--they weren't bad and a citronella candle was sufficient.
We loved the jungle experience--we were initially looking for a beach property but we are very happy we chose the Jungle Riverhouse instead. It felt more like true Kauai at its very best,

We spent 7 wonderful days at the River House, enjoying all that the rain forest of Kauai had to offer: fresh fruit growing on the beautifully landscaped property, rivers and flowers all around the house, and native birds everywhere. As well, we made use of all of the elaborate amenities that this beautiful house had available: fully equipped gourmet kitchen, a variety of accommodations in out-buildings, optional outdoor shower, CD/DVD selection, beach/snorkel supplies, and much more. The breezes generally kept us cool enough, and we eventually got used to the roosters crowing in the mornings. Great neighbour next door, who provided much information about the area. And we were not far from the many beautiful beaches (we visited a new one each morning and afternoon). A very memorable vacation that we would highly recommend to others!

      Water heaven

Left on 05/05/2010 for a stay in April 2010

The property was better than I hoped. The river sounds were enchanting
We only left for a few hours each day to snorkel at Tunnels or hike the Na
Pali trail. We ate in every day. The rest of the time we sat on the porch
talking, reading and drinking tea. We called the little house the love shack.
No explanation needed as to why. The sleeping quarters were heavenly.
Going from a hectic mainland lifestyle to the soothing comfort of the
rushing water and illusion we had no neighbors was fabulous. The owners
did a great job balancing a rather rustic style with every amenity we
needed, including a cappaccino machine. The home was very inviting unlike
other places we've stayed that feel so sterile because there are no spices,
salt, or common household items. We felt like we were truly guests of the
owners and were compelled to leave things in the pantry for others. It was
      just a magical place.

My only complaint, and it's probably not something that can be fixed, is the
neighbors' kids got awfully noisy at times and there were lots of barking
dogs. We even watched a mother stroll her baby across the beautifully
manicured space between the rivers while walking her dog. At the same
time, the kids and dogs made us feel part of the neighborhood so I'm not
counting this as a big negative.

The neighbor from the top even came down to welcome us. I would go here
again for a romantic get away with my husband. I would not go here with
my kids as there is little to do unless you get in the car and drive to the
beaches. The place is so gorgeous we rarely left except to get fresh fish
from the back door of the Dolphin. We'll be back next year.
