      Peaceful and beautiful

Left on 05/23/2013 for a stay in April 2013

My husband and I spent a week at Nohonani. What a beautiful home! we loved the openness of the house, the lanai, and the amazing views of the mountains. The house was clean and the location was perfect - close to Hanalei, Tunnels Beach, and the Kalalau trail. The only thing that would make this place even more comfortable would be a new bed. The current bed is small and soft; it is like sleeping in a bowl and unfortunately it left my back a bit sore. Also we had dish soap in the bathroom instead of hand soap, but we could live with that. The dogs didn't bother me as much as they bothered my husband and chickens are everywhere in Kauai so we just had to accept the noises of nature :) Overall, an awesome experience and I'm very happy we stayed at this home.

Stunning views, great location, large one bedroom apartment

Left on 04/11/2013 for a stay in April 2013

My husband and I had a fab time staying at Nohonani. The views from the Lanai are just spectacular and it is in a great location in between Ke'e and Hanalei Beaches. It is a huge one bed property with loads of character and clearly lovingly looked after by its owners.

If you are in to being on your own, surrounded by nature and great views, into hiking and beach activities, this is the place for you!

      Breathtaking views!

Left on 03/14/2013 for a stay in February 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in February. It was a great location for exploring the north shore and very close to the Kalalau Trail head. The view from the screened lanai is absolutely breathtaking. We were, however, disappointed with the cleanliness of the home; it did not appear to have been cleaned since the previous tenants. Given the high cleaning fee included in the cost of the rental, we expected more.

      Exquisitely beautiful setting, extremely private

Left on 03/13/2013 for a stay in February 2013

The pictures don't lie! The views from the lanai are to die for. Green, lush mountains and valley. The only other things visible are the beautiful grounds and what must be another small building's roof on the same property. No neighbors are visible. You really feel like you are in the jungle. But, not so deep as to feel claustrophobic, the house is light and airy with high ceilings. Very comfortable. Great amenities... everything you need to cook with, good counter space to boot. We loved staying here. We did need to use earplugs at night, mostly for the bullfrogs and roosters. Heard the dogs barking, but only until 9 or so, didn't hear them past that. It can be kind of alarming when you do hear them, but supposedly it is a shelter nearby? Someone wrote in the guestbook that the worst was what seemed around feeding time, which makes sense. Didn't bother us. We loved being able to sit outside and play cards past dark, the screened in lanai prevented us from being attacked by mosquitos. The house was very clean. Only negatives: 1)The bed was quite soft and a little small, could use a new mattress, we are not heavy people and would roll into each other during the night. 2)There were great beach towels, but the beach chairs were breaking down (one was broken, had to use a stick to keep it up), and the snorkel gear needs replacing - only one complete mask, and then it leaked. Just check with the rental company to see if the masks have been replaced, otherwise just rent your own, pretty cheap for the week. We would definitely stay here again!

Aloha to our guests-We really appreciate your feedback and comments-If we were informed about the beach chairs we would have replaced them immediatly. I will also pass on the comments about the bed to the owners.
The dogs belong to the neighbors for hunting purposes and usually bark when they are hungry or when they are disturbed and think they need to defend their property-typical dog behavior-the owner does supply earplugs at the house just in case.
This spectacular location is a favorite among couples and we are happy to know that you enjoyed your stay-we hope to see you again-

A great place on the north shore!

Left on 03/13/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We stayed at Nohonani a few weeks ago and had an amazing time. This house is great for a couple who want a nice, relaxing, clean place to stay on the north shore of Kauai. The lanai is by far the best feature of the house. It is large, private, completely screened in, and has an amazing view of the mountains that make Kauai so unique. There is a huge dining table on the lanai as well as some lounge chairs and best of all a hammock! It was a little slice of paradise. The kitchen was well stocked and the entire house was clean. Plenty of towels and even some beach gear! There is an outdoor shower for rinsing after a day at the beach. Hanalei town is 10 minutes away and the Na Pali Coast is 10 minutes the other way. So great!

This is where you stay when you want to refresh your mind and replenish your soul. Kitchen has a good cooking set-up: use the rice cooker and the cast iron skillet for lovely curries. I would have liked a second larger cast iron skillet and a big stainless pasta cooking pot.

      Exceeded Expectations

Left on 12/27/2012 for a stay in December 2012

We wanted a homebase on the north shore for our vacation, close to the Napali coast and away from tourist meccas. What we got was a beautiful home in its own right. The layout is perfect and spacious with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains from every room. When we weren't out hiking or snorkeling or sightseeing, we were simply enjoying the weather and view out on the lanai. The kitchen had everything we needed to make meals and we used lemons and oranges from the yard. I was happy, however, to have been forewarned about the neighborhood dogs in other reviews. They made quite an unexpected amount of noise the first night we were there, but were otherwise an expected nuisance that could be tuned out. Overall, it was an amazing vacation home that I would not hesitate to return to.

      A peaceful and private retreat

Left on 10/04/2012 for a stay in September 2012

We stayed at Nohonani for the first 5 nights of our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for a better experience. I have stayed in vacation rentals for years and this was one of the most homey, private, and conveniently well-stocked places I have ever rented. If you are looking for a true retreat from the world then you couldn't do much better. The views of the valley from the lanai were fantastic and while the screened in porch dampened our photos slightly we were certainly grateful for the protection from the mosquitos. And the stunning gardens were a lovely surprise. We were also surprised to discover that we were expected to feed the outdoor cat, which I wish the rental company had informed us of in advance. It wasn't a problem, but it might be for others. On the whole I was thrilled with our stay and absolutely want to return for an anniversary trip!

Aloha and Congratulations on your recent wedding-We are very pleased that you chose Nohonani as your honeymoon location-as have many before you-a romantic and private retreat with jaw-dropping views-
We were unaware that an outdoor cat has chosen to take up residence there and certainly would have disclosed that to our guests had we known. We would never expect our guests to feed the cat and if you were to phone us we would have explained that. The island has alot of "homeless" : cats who are looking for food and a little love-thank you for making us aware of this.
We hope that you will return again and look forward to your next visit.

      Wonderful

Left on 09/03/2012 for a stay in August 2012

Nohonani exceeded our expectations for accommodations, comfort, views, and convenience to locations we planned to visit on the North Shore. Very private.

Ever-changing views of sunlight and fog playing on the mountains, exceptional art, beautiful grounds, and a ten-minute walk to a beach great for sunbathing.

Well-designed cottage with local flavor. Kitchen is well-equipped. Had no problem with ants or any other insects. Beach towels and snorkeling equipment were available in the cottage, though we always bring our own.

Even in august with daytime highs approaching the mid-80s, the cottage catches tropical breezes with doors and windows open, and ceiling fans are where you need them.

Barking dogs, crowing roosters, and a chorus of frogs seemed to be part of the local experience. We also enjoyed the soothing sound of gentle nightly rains.

Can't wait to return for another relaxing stay.

Amazing Views but not amazing sleep

Left on 08/16/2012 for a stay in July 2012

The views are even better than the pictures! It was so beautiful and the porch was wonderful. I loved that everything was screened in so we had absolutely no problem with mosquitoes. We did have a couple friends come visit us though, quite a few geckos on the ceilings and walls and one giant nasty bug. It wasn't much of a problem for us, but others may be more picky. Our biggest complaint was the noise at nighttime. We had read about dogs barking but we didn't realize that it would be so much. Between that and noisy neighbors, it was very hard for me and my husband to sleep well our entire 7 night stay. We also found that the rooster crowing was much worse on the north shore than the south. Bring earplugs!!! They start very early and don't stop. We also weren't to keen on the seclusion of the house. Next time we return we will be staying on tunnels beach no question! The beaches within walking distance aren't safe to swim in.

This was my first time in Hawaii. I wan't to experience "old school" Hawaii so asked my friends for suggestions where to go. They all said that I should go to Hanalai. We loved it! We loved the house and the grounds! It was extremely relaxing, which is what we needed after planning our wedding! I would stay there again without hesitation. It was perfect for us as we live in a rural environment and it was just our style.

This home is beautiful and a perfect retreat for any couple looking to reconnect and experience the beauty of north shore Kauai. Very close to the prettiest beaches on Kauai and near Hanalei Town, we couldn't have asked for more. I almost hate to share my love for this home in case it makes it harder for us to get our reservation next trip! Book Nohonani - it's an experience that will live in your heart forever.

The house provided us with a great jumping off point to many of the beautiful sights, beaches, and experiences on Kauai's North shore. Although the convenience of the location is just a bonus to the house's seclusive nature, with panoramic views of the valley that Nohonani is nestled in, little to no civilization is visible which gave us a great feeling of escape and relaxation.

Barking dogs, crowing roosters, croaking frogs

Left on 04/27/2012 for a stay in April 2012

It is a shame they can't do something about the neighbors' dogs, maybe sue the neighbors for nuisance. The dogs bark at various times throughout the night; one starts and then there are dogs barking in the front, back, and side of the house. With the dogs, roosters, and frogs, it was hard to get much sleep; we tried closing the bedroom windows but then it was hot because there is no air conditioning.
The WiFi was not working but ethernet was. They have an HD TV but don't subscribe to HD channels, and only get analog, so the picture was not very good. For some reason, they have removed all the smoke detectors and left electric wires dangling from the ceilings.
There were ants in the kitchen and small beetle like insects in the shower and crawling on the ceilings; this is probably hard to prevent in Hawaii.
It is a nice house with a nice view of the mountains and valley. Good location near the Na Pali hiking trail, and within walking distance of the ocean. Beautifully landscaped lot with koi pond. The big problem is the dogs.

We loved our time at Nohonani. The house is lovely and very comfortable. The views are outstanding and the property is gorgeous. We feel very grateful that this piece of paradise was shared with us and can't wait to return. The barking dogs were quite loud at times, but we found that the barking noise actually seemed to blend into the other "jungle" noises that abound (incl. roosters and songbirds) and it didn't bother us much at all.

Beautiful Views, Nice Place but Bring your Ear Plugs

Left on 12/21/2011 for a stay in December 2011

The place is located very conveniently to the cool beaches we wanted to explore and the Na Pali hiking trails. The views from the home are absolutely stunning! The home is nice for the price. The downside was the incredibly awful sounds of dogs being caged up all day and night from neighbors. I really wish I had known this before renting as I am very sensitive to it. They barked from the moment we arrived and then sometimes well into the night while trying to fall asleep. The roosters of course were also something we had a hard time getting used to but they are naturally occurring so we got over it. The dogs however were much harder for us considering we are dog lovers and are against caging dogs...that was a real bummer. The house had most of what we needed to cook as much as we like to. The view was definitely the highlight of the property.

Fabulous views in the wilds of the Kauai north shore

Left on 08/30/2011 for a stay in August 2011

The views from the living room and lanai are amazing. The lush mountains and gardens below make you feel like you are in a jungle paradise. This was a fantastic place to spend our week on Kauai with convenient access to Ke'e, Tunnels and Lumahai Beach. The furnishings and layout of the house are tastefully done. It was great to have snorkeling gear, beach towels, beach chairs and hats provided. We loved the hats so much we went and bought a pair for ourselves. It is a comfortable home-base for days of adventuring and relaxation.

However, you need to be prepared that you are in a "jungle" paradise on Kauai. Ants are a constant problem in the kitchen. The screens on the windows and doors have enough gaps that you will have dozens of flying insects on the ceilings and walls if you have the lights on in the house at night. Of course, if you step out on the lanai you will need to apply insect repellent and have mosquito coils burning to enjoy dinner and not become dinner. The ubiquitous Kauai roosters are present and are happy to announce that it is 2am and all is well. This is all part of the expected Kauai experience.

Some of the unexpected issues were mildly annoying. First, the advertised "queen" bed is a double with an overly soft pillow-top that attempts to mask a very tired mattress. Second, there were a few amenities that were missing. The BBQ is the way you will want to prepare most of your meals. Unfortunately, there are no tools or anything with which to clean the grill. The hair dryer is also non-functional, so bring your own it you need one. Finally, the neighbors across the road have a large number of hunting dogs (kept in rather inhumane circumstances) that have a wild barking fest from about 8:00 to 8:30pm every night. Fortunately, they rarely bark later than about 9pm.

Overall, would we stay here again? Yes! It is a beautiful setting and great location for doing what we love to do on the north shore of Kauai.

We were disapointed by the service received from Na Pali Properties agents, we contacted them a few times (on the phone and at the office) and each times we felt that we were disturbing them and the agent was not courteous.
There were lots of ants in the house... we can live with that. We were however surprised/dispointed to see the number of flying roaches at night time. This reduced the conformt at night time.

      Heavenly Views!

Left on 03/04/2011 for a stay in February 2011

Nohonani was a very nice accommodation. The views are absolutely breathtaking! The cottage is very spacious. The bedroom is large with a ceiling fan that you will need since there is no air conditioning. We are used to ac but slept comfortably with just the fan. The bed is super comfortable. Not a lot of curtains or window coverings in the house, but that is ok since it is secluded and the views are too amazing to cover up. The main bath is large. The only drawback I found with this is that there is a pedestal sink and I am used to spreading out my toiletries, but I was able to put things in the windowsill. The living room had nice furnishings and a good TV. The laundry room was very helpful because I didn't have to do a ton of laundry when we got home. :-) The lanai was spacious and the table on it is large enough for a group of 6-8. The only problem here was the mosquitoes. We didn't eat outside at all because of the bugs, even though there was bug spray there. The full kitchen was nice, but some things appeared dirty. I took a utensil out of the holder to use and there was caked on food on it. Not that big of a deal, I just used another one, but I was inspecting everything before I used it. The other problem was ants. There were many in the kitchen. We stored most of our stuff in the fridge so it wouldn't get full of ants. There was ant spray under the sink which I used plenty of. This cottage is located in a remote part of the island and it does take a while to drive to the south end. Overall, this place is a wonderful cottage and I would recommend it to anyone as long as they can overlook the minor inconveniences and don't expect perfection.

      Absolutely Wonderful

Left on 01/04/2011 for a stay in December 2010

From check-in to check-out our stay was peaceful and perfect. The lanai overlooking the serene garden was the perfect setting for our meals and evening relaxation. The location provides both solitude and comfort. We will definitely stay here again.

The place to escape to near Hanalei

Left on 11/25/2010 for a stay in November 2010

This house is in a gorgeous canyon with views of the pali and river -- well worth driving across many one-lane bridges to escape from the world and have easy access to the bes beaches. The house is generous, modern and easy to live in, with great breezes and ceiling fans, kitchen and lanai are the best. Lots of chickens at dawn (OK) mixed with crazed dog barking (not so great). A great alternative to being on the water.

      Cottage in Paradise...with one caveat

Left on 10/11/2010 for a stay in September 2010

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Nohonani. The house was everything we could wish for and more. Just the right size for two, with incredible views and gardens. And for two food-fanatics who love farmers markets and fresh cooked foods, the kitchen was ample and fairly well equipped , although there were only two pans that weren't teflon coated (note to the owners/property managers - throw away all that teflon, its toxic!). The rest of the house was a dream and for people looking to get away from the normal tourist routine, Wainiha is perfect. The only downside about this rural location being the "neighbors". Kaua'i is famous for chickens and dogs. Noisy chickens and noisier dogs (large packs apparently kept by hunters??). At least the dogs eventually went to sleep but the roosters apparently are all on different time zones! So next time I will be sure to bring along a good set of earplugs. Apart from the dogs and the chickens, we can't wait to go back!

Quiet location with a beautiful and tranquil view.

Left on 09/23/2010 for a stay in September 2010

Nohonani was a beautiful place to stay. The views were beautiful lending itself to a relaxing and calming stay. The neighborhood overall was quiet except for the excessive dogs barking; this was sometimes too much especially during the night. I would say this was a downfall to Nohonani. The place was very clean, spacious and all of the amenities were wonderful. The price was decent for the value-it is just getting at the top end of our budget. The price would just limit the number of nights we could stay. Overall, I would definitely recommend Nohonani to a friend. I never thought I would go to Hawaii and not stay by the beach, but Nohonani is so beautiful I would not think twice about staying there again.

      Magical Island Experience

Left on 05/24/2010 for a stay in April 2010

My wife and I stayed at Nohonani on our last visit
to Kauai and chose to return because we had such an
amazing experience the first time. If you are
looking for ocean views, this is not the place to
stay. But, if you are interested in seeing the
island in a way that you probably wouldn’t normally
see, this is the place to be. It would be hard to
find an accommodation with more amazing mountain
and jungle views anywhere. The house is raised and
secluded within a private botanical garden that is
filled with orchids, fruit trees, native flowers
and an amazing assortment of palm trees from around
the world. The elevation of the house affords
views from the deck and windows that go on for
miles up the Wainiha Canyon. It’s the views up the
canyon that provide the magic. The views are wild,
primal, and beautiful, like something straight out
of “Jurassic Parkâ€. Still, you are close enough to
the ocean to hear the waves crashing on the beach
and you are within easy reach of some of the best
beaches anywhere on Kauai. You are in a jungle
environment, which means the animal sounds are more
apparent at night and the bugs are a bit more of a
concern when outdoors (bring some mosquito
repellant). But, the house is clean and inviting.
The owner is a sculptor, as well as a botanist, and
his ceramic pieces, along with other pieces of
original art are everywhere. The house has
everything you need for cooking in the kitchen and
on the BBQ. As a bonus, you do not need to pack
beach towels. They are provided. All in all, this
is a magical island experience. What’s more, if it
rains, there will be waterfalls and rainbows
galore. Checking in and out with Na Pali
Properties couldn't have been easier and we know
they are there to help if needed. Mahalo nui loa

      Great place great price

Left on 01/28/2010 for a stay in January 2010

I really loved Nohonani. It is tucked away on a bluff with a beautiful view of the mountains. It is so peaceful to sit out on the lanai and just contemplate life. There are about 2 acres of grounds you can walk around, consisting of koi ponds and fruit trees. The owners have done a beautiful job of landscaping.

The house is perfect for a couple. All rooms open onto the lanai. I was there in January and slept every night with the doors open. One night it got a little cool. In summer it would be warmer and with the lack of a sea breeze in this valley, sleeping with the door open might be a requirement. All rooms have ceiling fans which helps out when you need a little breeze (no AC).

Be aware of the noises, however. There are nearby dogs and roosters and bullfrogs that like to practice their vocals all night. If you are a light sleeper, then you may have trouble falling asleep, especially with the doors open.

The location is almost to the end of the Kuhio highway, so you are about 10 minutes from Hanalei and of course much further from the rest of the island. (You are very close to Tunnels Beach and the start of the Kalalau Trail, however.) If you are looking for a private house where you can be alone, this is a great choice.

You are not on the beach and can't see the beach, but you can walk to the closest beach in 10 minutes and drive to it in 2. Lots of world-class beaches within a 10 minute drive. The good thing about not being on the beach is that it keeps the price of this place down. If this exact house and grounds were on the beach, it would rent for probably $2500 a week.

This is a unique property. I highly recommend it for what it is.

Very private and spacious -- a great escape from my city apartme

Left on 09/02/2009 for a stay in August 2009

I really enjoyed staying at Nohonani. It was very quiet (except for nature sounds -- those are OK) and private. The kitchen was surprisingly well-equipped. This is probably the first rental where I didn't have to buy something to be able to actually cook. The bed was really comfortable. There are a lot of fruit trees on the property. Unfortunately, nothing was ripe when we were there. This house is a short drive to nice beaches. The only negative was the insects, which is perhaps a given in Hawaii (this was my first time). Ants and some other type of small insect were ubiquitous inside the house and one must not go outdoors around the house without insect repellent due to the mosquitoes. Still, I would certainly stay here again. The views are beautiful and the house is comfortable.

Heaven, Eden, Whatever... This place is biblically beautiful!

Left on 01/16/2009 for a stay in October 2008

This was my 3rd visit to the north shore of Kauai and Haena
specifically, the first with my partner. I tried to book one of the
other spots I had stayed before (which was nice, too) but someone
beat me to it. Frankly, I was devastated. We found this Nohonani
on Craigslist and because we had not very much time until the trip
      we booked right away.

Well, someone was watching over us because this place is way
better than any of the other spots I have stayed previously. It is
incredibly romantic and the views are truly spectacular. The
lushness of the property creates a privacy that makes you feel like
      you're all alone out there.

You can't see the ocean, not even a little, but you won't miss it.
You're on the North Shore for a reason, the jungle, and it's all laid
      out before you.

If you're on the fence about this location, JUMP OFF. You will
      absolutely not regret it.

Left on 12/24/2008 for a stay in November 2008

Set back from the main coastal road, this property felt more secluded along the river valley. Yet it is only a 5 min walk to the nearest beach(not for swimming)or a short drive to tunnels beach (great snorkelling). The house feels bright and airy with plenty of space for two people to relax. The landscape through the patio windows was stunning. You can get woken quite early in the morning by the cockrels but that is probably true anywhere on the island.
If I was heading back to Kauai I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Nohonani.

Privacy, amazing views, an impressive collection of tropical plants and palms. The house was impeccably clean and completely equipped with anything and everything you could expect. You can tell that the owners have thought of everything to make it enjoyable. We ourselves are property managers in Costa Rica and appreciated all the attentions to details. Beyond your imagination

Left on 12/18/2008 for a stay in September 2008

All I have to say is thank God for craigslist. I have to admit I live in Maui, but my absolute favorite place in Hawaii is Haena. When I found no availability through the usual places I stay, my options were becoming more limited. I was so amazed to see Nohonani available. I was familiar with it's location and always had a curiosity about what was up "power house rd." First I have to say the pictures do not do justice to what you will experience when you stay here. The fact that you wake up to the most majestic un-obstructed view you can imagine is the absolute best way to start your day off while in Haena. It inspired me to cook( I have to admit I don't cook so that speaks volumes) and want to spend more time enjoying the serenity, beauty, and absolute extravagence of this perfect place. I will always stay here upon my return to Kauai. It's easy to walk to my favorite beach "Tunnels", yet I was close enough to Hanalei to pick up any needed supplies or a go out on the town. I'm a concierge and have to make recommendations for a job and for a vacation I chose to go to Haena and enjoy the peace that overwhelms you when your in Kauai. Personally, there is no other place I will stay. Nohonani encompasses everything that is Kauai.

      A Wonderful Surprise!

Left on 12/15/2008 for a stay in June 2008

We stayed at Nohonani last June and absolutely loved it! It is tucked away off the main road and hidden amongst the gorgeous vegetation and animal life. The views are spectacular.

The place was spotless upon arrival and there were plenty of fresh towels. Location is wonderful because it is located in the center between the town of Haena and the Napali Trail head.

My only complaint is that the owners showed up twice unexpected and unannounced and it surprised us. It felt invasive, given that we had booked the place for that period. Don't let this deter you from selecting wonderful spot... I just suggest that you speak with the rental company beforehand to make sure you don't have this occur.
