House was perfect. All that anyone would need for a relaxing time in Hanalei. Finally a rental that had all the little amenities that you actually use on vacation. No need to go buy $100 worth of bug spray, toilet paper, laundry detergent, or any other misc. items that you will only use one time. They were all there for your use. Clean, comfortable, and private. I will be back.

The setting of Kuraoka Cottage, also known as the artist's Cottage is spectacular; it's surrounded by fruit trees, exotic vegetation, and magnificent palms with a view of mountains and a waterfall, and the sound of birds and a rushing river below. The house has absolutely everything one might need, from a rocking chair and cooling breezes, to laundry soap and comfortable beds, not to mention walls of glass and a fabulous screened porch. The cottage was spotless when we arrived and the interior is filled with art and sculpture, much of which was created by the cottage's owners. The handyman lives next door, though we never needed his help. It is wonderfully secluded, but five minutes to the beach and ten minutes to the charming town of Hanalei. It rained literally the entire week we were there, and we had to abort two helicopter rides that would have shown us Kuaui's main natural sights. Nevertheless I would not have traded the time at this house on the North Shore for any less rainy part of Kuaui or any other kind of accomodations. If you want to immerse yourself in Kuaui, this is the place to be. I liked best the natural beauty of the surroundings and the comfort and artistic flair inside the home. I should say that what I liked least was the persistent rain, but I actually loved that as well. It is difficult if not impossible to find anything to dislike about Kuraoka Cottage!

Simple, cozy accomodations with all the basics covered. Great location
in relation to the Na Pali coastline. Beautiful and serene mountain views within the foothills which (during July/August) brought a little more light precipitation in the early mornings in particular. Plenty of beaches of varying crowd range and remoteness to choose from. -

The cottage and owner's pottery is delightful. The location was difficult because it is in the rainiest place on earth and it poured rain much of the time we were there and we had very little light and sunlight. When the sun shone, it was nice, but one must love near mountains. There were two centipedes because of the rain and that was scary. The rental property owners were not warm and fuzzy, but were somewhat helpful. the owners seem like terrific people. We had the amenities. It is in the jungle so perfect for someone seeking that dense feeling. Crickets so thick there is no rhythm to them just a constant sound. And at night you can hear the far off waterfall. Pretty place. secluded. too remote for us. terrible roadways and four one lane bridges to traverse twice a day in the rain.

It's unfortunate that this guest gave the house a poor review score, when actually it appears they didn't like Kauai. The cottage is "delighful", at night you "can hear the far off waterfall", "pretty place", "secluded". Yes, this is a rainy part of the world, and yes there are a lot of single lane bridges. The guest called to complain about the centipedes, we don't blame her - they freak us out, too. But when we volunteered to have the pest control company come to treat the house, she declined - then asked for a refund, which we declined. She then asked for a senior discount, which we also declined. So I guess we weren't very nice to her. We apologize.

Apart from the nice views of mountains and a distant waterfall, this house had a really good feeling to it (also had amazing dreams at night), great set up, everthing you need in the kitchen, best loungey relaxo chairs. If you want to feel like you live in Kauai and are not just in another boring form of hotel, resort or hostel this is the place. The power went out for about 2 hours, but ive left some candles there for next time, and people next door said this is a pretty rare occurrence.

I was looking for solitude, a place to kick back and be away from work, interference, obligations, friends and family. A chance to read or sleep or eat or wander or just be with no time schedule or thought of being in the 21st century. The cottage created this environment for me. Just retro enough to be in old Hawaii, but modern enough for comfort. Washer/dryer if I needed it. Modern kitchen if I wanted it. WiFi, TV, books and beach gear. Quiet(!) beach half a mile away. Remote surf sounds at night and a slow awakening in the morning(except for the occasional rooster). One lamp needed a halogen bulb...got a whole new lamp! Hanalei was a few miles distant for cafes, shops, groceries. No chain restaurants or shops...local people. Friendly area. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

San FranciscoA tropical paradise for nature-lovers, artists and writers
Left on 02/15/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My wife and I spent a week writing, reading, painting and exploring nature in this wonderful cottage, owned by a potter/sculptor who is a Hawaiian treasured artist. His works, and the works he admires, frame the incredible vistas out of every window, overlooking the mountains and valleys of northern Kauai. One night there was a torrential rain storm, the electricity went out, and the road out was flooded; and all my wife and I hoped for was that it would continue for weeks, and isolate us in this paradise forever. In the tiny village, the Dolphin Fish Market is the resource for the best fresh fish in the world, as well as other foodstuffs. And Farmer's markets happen 2 or 3 days a week carrying all the local produce. The cottage is fully equipped, beautifully furnished, and has a screened in porch/aerie
high among the tree tops. This is a very rare spot on the earth to spend some wonderful hours. -

Left on 02/10/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We really enjoyed our stay in Kuroaka Cottage and felt completely at home there. The cottage is very attractive with generous windows throughout looking into lush green foliage and hills. It is also suprisingly spacious with a large living area and main bedroom. (The second bedroom was locked, so I cant comment on that.) It is very comfortable and includes a very well-equipped kitchen and small but adequate bathroom. Shampoo and conditioner were not included, which was rather surprising. We had all our meals in the generous screened lanai just off the living area. We particularly enjoyed the extensive and eclectic contemporary art on all the walls. Readers should know that the photo of the cottage is taken from below the cottage--a view you never see as that area is off limits. The cottage entrance is actually about 20-25' down a steepish paved driveway. As others have noted, your car should be left by the side of the road at the top of the driveway, but this really means no real hardship, just a slightly more difficult loading an unloading process. There are all kinds of nice extras like snorkeling equipment, a picnic cooler, an outside shower for sand-removal after the beach, not t mention two beautiful flower arrangements. And the location is very convenient to any number of beautiful north shore beaches. The only negative from our point of view was that there was no accessible garden or patio available. As we had no problems, we cannot comment on Na Pali Properties, though they were pleasant to deal with when making the reservations.

Oakland, CAGreat house, great location, terrible neighbors.
Left on 11/02/2011 for a stay in October 2011
7 years ago, for our honeymoon, we stayed in the "bigger" Kuraoka house near the front of the road and loved it. It was not available during our vacation dates, so we decided to give the Cottage a try. We like the idea of spending a little less and being tucked back in the peaceful valley in a more "local" environment, so that is great. Also, we are young artists, and it's nice being in a home with some tasteful contemporary decor, as the owner is a ceramic artist.
We were there for 8 days.
Twice during our stay the neighbors (to the north) had a party which very loudly went past midnight. We weren't comfortable telling the locals to shut up, so we suffered through it. One night it went till 4:30am!! Two nights later it went till 2:30am. The first night, when it went till 4:30am, we were waking up the next morning at 5:30am to go on a big day hike we had planned for months. Ruined our sleep for that day. We were so upset.
Read: girls and guys outside our window, yelling so loudly as if no one around them existed. Finally the groundskeeper guy below told them to shut up and they did (at 2:30am) on the second night. This experience alone would bring my rating down to one star, but I really like the house.
Second complaint: you can't park in the driveway. So you are either unloading from the street above, or the lower level of the property below. Not a big deal, but we were not aware of this.
A few minor complaints:
There were used shower amenities in the bathroom. The "bigger" house had a nice basket with fresh ones. Small detail, but very appreciated.
The fridge works great, but it ain't pretty. Does nothing for the otherwise nice kitchen.
Pros:
Beautiful, lush setting!
Screened porch!
Decor!
Beach gear!
Airy and relaxing!
A great house, an overall great experience. But I can't recommend this cottage to a friend out of the concern that they won't get any sleep. -

I enjoyed my stay in the cottage. It is located close enough to the beach, yet away from tourist crowds. It was well cleaned and well lit, with large windows looking out. Although you could see a couple houses from the window, and there was a "groundskeeper" down below the house in another building, it was mostly private and very quiet.

We loved our two week stay in this North Shore cottage. We experienced the tropical rainforest all around us in the beautiful Wainiha Valley from its large windows in every room. We enjoyed cooking in the charming and well equipped kitchen, then eating in the screened dining porch. It's a modest but very clean and comfortable lodging. And it's just a short drive to several fantastic beaches and Na Pali coast hiking. We spent very little time in the car by shopping in Hannalei at the natural foods store and the Saturday Farmer's Market.

The pleasures for us were the comfortable cottage with
a good library, excellent kitchen, superlative views of
a valley and high mountain peaks with minimal human
impact. The location was perfect as we were less than
2 miles from tunnels beach for snorkeling, a beautiful
drive at 20 miles an hour into Haneli. We were able to cook excellent meals at home, yet have some of
the best available restaurants nearby. In all it was like
being in a real home away from the hub-bub of a more chaotic city or community. We felt like we were
in a non-tourist environment and that this was really
our home (didn't we wish)

Left on 05/12/2011 for a stay in April 2011
We really really loved our cottage near the North Shore of Kauai. The location ended up being wonderful although our first impression was "unsure" - the steep driveway, and being "off the beaten path" a bit in an area where the locals live - but we soon felt at home and realized it was perfect for us - close to our favorite beaches - Tunnels and Ke'e and relatively close to Hanalei - our favorite Kauai town (small, quaint and full of hawaiian energy, laid back bars and restaurants, and just great people and activities. The bed was nice and comfy and the windows provided nice views of the mountains and foliage around us. My biggest complaint is the grill - it's a mess - barely functioning. They are not that expensive and this one is way beyond it's last leg. We cooked on it but it kind of put a damper on our "cook at home" efforts. Everything else was great - chairs and beach towels and a little cooler to use, plenty of closet space and hangers, the bureau was old and the bottom drawer is broken but it functioned. Loved having a washer and dryer available - a great asset!!! Loved the rocking chair - you need two - it was the seat of choice!! So despite a few little things we have come home and raved about our cottage to everyone and really loved the place. I would definitely come back and rent it again. If you like being a bit off the beaten path - with a warm at home feeling - this is the place for you!! To get more of a feel - we are not resort type people - we love adventure and to hike and snorkel and be away from the crowds and amenities of a hotel atmosphere - this is close to Kalalau Trail and the best snorkeling beach (Tunnels) - and close to the activities in Hanalei and you have privacy and comfort!!

Of the four cottages I stayed in, this was by far the best: spotless, beautifully furnished and decorated, comfortable and quiet, set on a lush hillside in a rural neighborhood with glorious views out over the river valley and up into lush mountains. As a cook, I appreciated the high-quality equipment and utensils, and as an artist, I reveled in the numerous original paintings and pottery collections that the owners have entrusted to guests' care. The cottage is near the end of the road on the North Shore, so is minutes from some of the island's best beaches and close to the bustling little town of Hanalei, but seems a world away because of its lofty, bucolic setting. I stayed there for a week this year, and have already booked two weeks for spring 2012.

we just came back from Kaua'i and our stay at the Kuraoka cottage. The location of the property is perfect for any North Shore activities, and of course anything on the island is within driving distance. The cottage has everything you need to make it your home away from home. I would absolutely stay there again. Note: park on the street, not the driveway, it's steep! Also bring a flashlight for the walk at night. It's dark... but don't forget to look up at the millions of stars! It was amazing!

Thank you for a wonderful stay at the Kuraoka Cottage. We loved it!! Clean, beautiful views, superb lanai, comfy bed, this was more than we expected. Na Pali properties was very easy to deal with--they were friendly, flexible and very professional. We had to change the dates of our stay at the last minute due to the closure of the Kalalau Trail and luckily were still able to still stay at the Kuraoka Cottage. Our only feedback would be that the home would be completely wonderful with more comfortable seating! The couch in the living room was not comfortable for 2 people and we would have relaxed more there in the evening if we had a better place to sit. Otherwise, superb. Other reviews do discuss that this home is in a neighborhood and there are occasionally dogs barking (but we had roosters crowing at the Marriott so this was no difference to us), There is a residence under the upper living space where we stayed and there was a resident there during our stay although he (? she?) was exceptionally quiet and unobtrusive so we weren't really aware there was someone else around. Highly recommended. Thank you!

The cottage was spacious, well-equipped, and convenient to the North Shore beaches. The decor was a bit dated. The adjoining properties are trashy...not the nicest neighborhood. Although the valey is beautiful, the photo of the waterfall on the web site is a bit misleading--only viewable from a corner of the cottage and very far away.
Although tidy, the bathroom has a significant mildew problem. -

Brooklyn, NYLovely Private Retreat - Fantastic Kitchen and Supplies!
Left on 08/26/2010 for a stay in July 2010
We were very happy when we opened the door to our private home away from home - full kitchen with gas-burning stove and a sink with a view, pots/pans/olive oil - even a couple beers in the fridge. The bedroom was spacious and had sliding doors to the outdoor very narrow deck. The TV and internet worked and there was a stereo with an ipod connector. There were ample coolers, beach towels, snorkel gear, water shoes, sunscreen etc.
The 2 main drawbacks were - not comfy couches in the living room, and the porch didn't have much sun - the view was obscured by trees, and the furniture wasn't comfortable. The gas grill didn't have any gas. The house is up a road with locals living there but it didn't seem crowded and was very quiet.
We liked living so far down the north shore - we didn't think we'd like being so isolated but turns out we loved it. We spent 3 nights here and 4 nights in Kilauea and preferred it here. Beaches are so lovely and the farmers market Tuesday in Wainiha was perfect.
We walked the first 2 miles of the trail at the end of the road - it was muddy - we walked barefoot and it felt amazing. It rained a lot by the house (about 5 times before 10am!) but what do you expect, it's a rainforest? It was lovely. As soon as you get 5 mins down the road to the beach it stopped raining. -

We very much enjoyed our stay. Check in was a breeze, directions were good. I felt that the location was ideal. I would recommend parking on the side of the road rather than down the steep driveway. The cottage has a very good energy. The views were amazing. We spent most of our time outside, watching the rain pass & listening to the soothing sounds of nature. A Bose stereo is provided with a cord that you can plug into your I-pod or laptop. Plenty of linens were provided. The bed was very comfortable & we had the good fortune of a little gecko hanging out with us inside for a while. Lots of nice artwork. We didn’t use the grill because I don’t eat meat (other than fish) & it looked like the last people didn’t clean it after using it. A bit of a bummer I guess but the worse part about our stay was having to leave. We will be back for sure.

The cottage was true to the way we imagined it from the pictures and descriptions, in that it was private, bright with great views and lots of fresh air. The kitchen is amply stocked with cookware, but you'll want to bring your own staples. Comfortable bed, no window coverings in the bedroom, so good luck if you're planning on sleeping in. Going back to the cottage after a sun-drenched day at the beach was a perfect ending to an otherwise perfect tropical island vacation. We would definitely stay a Kuraoka Cottage again.

The opposite of a Princeville condo, Kuraoka Cottage has character and privacy in a stunning jungle setting. While it's decorated with an interesting mix of kitschy Hawaiian cast ceramics and David Kuraoka's accomplished pottery it can be difficult to divert your gaze from the luscious valley and multiple waterfalls visible through huge windows and from the large patio.
The location is great, just a short drive to hiking, snorkeling, surfing, groceries and restaurants.
There were lots of bugs outside after dark and we did get an afternoon visit from a giant Cane spider on the deck, but supposedly he's helpful around the yard. That's jungle style.
Thanks Carol and David for leaving banana and avocado treats for us! We'll bring another couple to share the place with us next time. -

Lovely place. Beautiful views and vista's. Very private - no one can see in. Comfortable all around, and good cooking/eating space.
It is in a "neighborhood", so you are subject to the usual neighborhood sounds of neighbors, barking dogs, etc., but the road traffic is very light and you're 1/2 mile away from the main road.
Window treatment is minimal, so expect to get the morning light.
The Na Pali rental folks are very nice and responsive, so you'll be in good hands.
We especially enjoyed the "wi-fi" in the house, which made our iPhone work exceptionally well for light internet searches, weather checks, etc. There was adequate AT&T coverage for phone calls. -

Kuraoka cottage is a charming little house that is bright and airy with excellent views of lush green mountains and tropical foliage. The house has hard wood floors, hawaiiana decor and lots of cool pottery within. A covered lanai has an outside eating or relaxing area and the propane BBQ was easy to use - we used it often with fish from the Hanalei Dolphin fish market - ono! The washer and dryer were a godsend, even if the washer was a little clunky sounding. The house was pretty quiet, although there are neighbors kind of close to one side. It still feels private, though. The road the house is on is a nice place to walk with great views. The one potential downside is that you really can't walk to any good beaches, but that's probably why the price is so nice!
