A delightful barn conversion in a lovely setting,We spent 4 nights here and couldn't have wished for anything more. Its only a thirty minute drive from Bath and after an exhausting day at Longleat it only took 5 minutes to get home :)
There are many pubs in the local area to visit for food and the owners of The Old Stable are extremely friendly and helpful. We would recommend this to all couples looking for a peaceful break. -

We found this to be the perfect location & indeed a fantastic Cottage for relaxing & exploring this area of Wiltshire. The cottage is very comfortable & well equiped for two people & two dogs(with owner's permssion). Totally enclosed garden area for dogs to roam without supervision, unless they can clear a 4ft fence. Beautiful views over meadows & forest in distance.

We both loved our stay here-wish we'd booked it for whole week! The view from patio is stunning, we really enjoyed our breakfasts in the back garden (and so did the owners dogs, who'd venture over every morning to say hello!). The inside is very cosy and comfortable (especially with the logburner going!), furnished to a high standard with everything you could need. Loved the area, so much to do and the cottage was so close we hardly dented our petrol budget! Would definitely stay again if in the area.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Old Stable for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday.
It was perfect! The barn has been renovated as if it was their own home, not a holiday let. This is evident from the tasteful decor to the abundance of plug sockets!
There was such attention to detail, that made our stay so comfortable.
Fresh bread, scones and milk awaited us on arrival as well as wood for the fire. The bed is the most comfortable I have ever slept in!
It is in a great location, we visited Longleat, Bath and Cheddar Gorge. We also went for a lovely country walk and saw lots of deer!
One of highlights has to be the owners two Labradors, they were very friendly and playful.
We would definitely recommend this wonderful cottage and we hope to return! -

My two Labradors and I spent four days at the lovely Old Stable, and can heartily recommend it. The owners, Chris and Enid, are wonderfully welcoming, the surroundings are peaceful and the cottage itself is well-equipped, comfortable and stylish. The conversion from stable to cottage has been imaginatively done, with soaring vaulted ceilings and beautiful Travertine floors giving the place a spacious and luxurious feel. Although I am local to the area, I would love to return some day.

We and found the cottage to be charming and light. It has a lovely view and the local village pub (probably less than a mile away) makes really good food. There are also two lovely dogs who came to visit us in the mornings - we had fun playing with them.
We were a little disappointed that there were a few tiny things missing in the cottage which we would have expected to find (we do a lot of weekend breaks to cottages around the country and so have a good idea of what cottages in this price bracket are usually equipped with). Just little things like tea towels and dish cloths, perhaps some olive oil and then fire lighters and kindling for our first night - the kind of thing you realise is missing only at the point at which you need it and then don't really want to set off to the shops for. These are inexpensive things, but do make a difference to the overall experience. Oh and the shower (although it is a lovely shower) ran out of water after one not particularly long shower on the first morning, so one of us went without. This might have just been an anomaly, but we rationed ourselves by not switching it on full the next morning and both had showers - however, it is not something which you expect to have to think about on a romantic break. On the other hand - the broadband did actually work, which is unusual!
In terms of the area - there are lovely walks to be had and nice farm shops to stock up from, particularly the Ginger Piggery, so it made a nice base for a weekend.
Overall, it was nice - I don't want to appear too critical - it could just do with those final little touches to make it great.
In terms of my ratings below - a three seater sofa would have earned this cottage another comfort star. This seems to be a common thing,so not a particular criticism, but where there is room for a sofa that two people can comfortably relax on together, I think it always worth putting one in. And the touches above would have added another star to the service bit.Response from Christopher and Enid Richmond - 04/20/2013
Owner
Thank you and we are glad Anna found the cottage 'charming and light' with a 'lovely view'. The hot water tank is sufficient for two normal showers and no one else else has had a problem in two years. Tea towels are provided and a dish brush instead of a cloth. Logs are supplied and the fire laid on arrival in winter. We do not think olive oil is necessary in self-catering. There are two large double sofas which is generous for two people. No comments were made at the time.

We enjoyed three nights at The Old Stable. The cottage was so comfortable and peaceful. It was really well equipped and very warm! We especially enjoyed using the log burner! The owners could not have been more helpful and welcoming. There was milk in the fridge and delicious home made bread and flapjacks. On leaving our car would not start and again the owners were so helpful, giving us the keys so we could wait in the cottage for the RaC. We will definitely return!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Old Stable for a 4 night break in February. It was excellent, The Host Chris was warm and welcoming and we had freshly baked scones and bread left for us on our arrival. The facilities were second to none. The bed was one of the most comfortable that i've ever slept on. On our last day, we even considered barricading ourselves in and living off our supplies for as long as we could so we didn't have to leave. Perfect, romantic getaway, in an ideal location with loads to do in the nearby area. Cant wait to return.

The Old Stable at Crockerton was very comfortable, warm and pleasantly laid out. All the facilities were modern and the building itself was light and airy. In particular the open plan layout of the property with it's ceiling open to the full pitch height of the building gave an impression of space. The view from the property was particularly fine looking down across fields to the river valley in the distance and the forest rising up beyond.
The owner was particularly welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Delicious home made Christmas cake and bread were awaiting us on arrival.
Visits to the nearby Shearwater lake, Longleat forest, Westbury White Horse and the National Trust property at Stourhead were all extremely enjoyable.
All in all a very enjoyable week over the New Year holiday.

No other way to describe our week at The Old Stable. The property, the owners, the welcome and even the weather, were all on our side. I took my wife to Bath for the first time, revisited Longleat from our childhood,we dined out very well and we stayed in with the fire and a good book a couple of times. To top it all Tracys comment about the picture on the website of the stable with snow and we would not see it, well we did, stupidly enough it snowed on the Sunday. It ticked all of our boxes and we would confidently say it should tick most other peoples too. This is one of the easiest reviews to do and one of the easiest recommendations to make, try it you will love it.

After staying up at the B&B; we moved down to the Old Stable for the weekend and fell in love with it as soon as we entered. The decor was simple and bright yet kept traditional , along with some of the original features of the stables still being on show.
Enid had left us some milk in the fridge, some warm freshly-made bread and a small plate of fruit cake slices.
All we did do whilst we stayed there was to completely wind down and totally relax after visiting Longleat and Bournemouth earlier in the week.
Additional highlights from this stay included the fabulous views on waking, of waiting for some horses coming into the near field and the daily visits from the owner's dogs who were so friendly.
I am sure we will visit again! -

After our long-awaited Spain holiday fell through, we needed to find a place that would 'make do' in as nice a way as possible as a substitute. The Old Stable was the perfect find!
It is so beautifully decorated (contemporary country) and in such a beautiful immediate location that we wish we could have stayed longer.
It's perfect for dog-friendly stays with a living area that opens onto a gated courtyard and beyond that, fields (with horses) to view. It was immaculate and the hosts are helpful and lovely (providing the most complete visitors guide I have ever seen!). Try the local pub-friendly, good food and dog-friendly also.
Will definitely remember this place for a future holiday. It really was stunning, quiet, restful (the most comfortable bed ever-what is that brand Chris?)> Thank you.

Left on 08/12/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We have just returned from a fantastic weeks stay at The Old Stable. The cottage is modern whilst retainining it's character, beautifully decorated and well equipped for a comfortable stay. With it being set so far back from the road and to the rear of Crockerton House you will struggle to hear any traffic at all, it feels like you are out in the countryside with fabulous views to match.
The location of the cottage was perfect for our break as many places of interest (Longleat, Shearwater, Stourhead and Wells) were only a few miles away.
We cant wait to book up and return.

I cannot recommend the Old Stable highly enough. We had a wonderful time here and cannot fault it in any way. The cottage itself is very modern and beautifully decorated whilst still retainig its charm and romantic feel. It has a lovely private and enclosed garden which opens out onto a lovely view of open countryside. It is set in the immaculate grounds of the main house giving you a very secluded feel. There is plenty to do in the local area. Longleat Safari park is only five minutes away, and nearby is Stourhead Gardens, a bison farm where you can buy bison meat for the bbq, Clarks discount retail park( some real bargins to be had), Cley Hill if you fancy a short walk up a big hill, just to mention a few.
The owners Christopher and Enid are wonderful people, always on hand to help and suggest ideas or just to chat.
Enid and Christopher have two labradors of their own, but dont worry if your not a dog lover they are kept under complete control and dont bother anyone unless like us you have your very own labrador who loved playing with them. You can walk virtually straight out of the property and into woods for a nice walk and the local pub is only 2 minutes away.
I could go on and on about this place, but in short it is well worth the visit for dog and non dog owners and we will definately be heading back.

This was a suprise weekend away for my partner and i she was very impressed with my choice! Chris gave us the little tour when we first arrived and presented us with our complimentary home baked bread and chocolate cake which was a nice touch.
The Old Stable itself is lovely and very secluded the refurbishment of the building has been completed to a great standard and was very comfortable and homely.
The location is fantastic for exploring a truly great part of the country and is right on the doorstep of Longleat House/Safari park.
We are planning to return again and hopefully find the weather kinder to us.
If i was forced to pick a negative it would be the 4pm check in and 10am check out not that you find things much different elsewhere and i'm sure the time is put to good use as the stable was imaculately clean when we arrived. -

The accommodation was very pleasing, and that's coming from someone who is particularly hard to please. The hosts, Chris and Enid, have been particularly generous in stocking the cottage with excellent quality equipment, from furnishing to cooking utensils and place mats! Everything was fresh and clean. My partner and I are not the most outgoing of people and so their non-intrusive approach suited us perfectly, while at the same time they were very approachable. The grounds of the cottage and the views were beautiful and the location was in easy reach of tourist attractions including Bath, Stone Henge and Salisbury, which we visited.

From start to finish our long weekend away at The Old Stable in Crockerton was nothing but perfect! The stable itself has been renovated to a very high standard and we both felt instantly at home and comfortable, helped by the fact that owners Chris and Enid supplied us with scones, cream and freshly baked granary bread on arrival...perfect for bacon sandwiches the following morning! Crockerton itself is in an ideal location, with Bath, Salisbury, Shaftsbury and Stone Henge which we visited, no more than 30-45 minutes away by car. Our dog Hugo enjoyed it too with great walks, a lake and forests all nearby. There's some shops down the road for essentials but we drove just 5 minutes up the road to the newly built Waitrose in Warmister as we stayed in and cooked every night although there are several pubs serving food in the area. All in all, we couldn't fault it and it's more than likely we'll visit again next year if not later on this year...maybe near Christmas time! Highly recommended! Guy & Jenny

we stayed here between the 16th and 18th March. The location is excellent with access to local amenities and close to numerous attractions (Longleat, Bath, Stonehenge). The stable is an excellent conversion and is very well presented. It's very cosy sat in front of the log burning stove on a night. The kitchen comes equipped with all the mod cons that you would need. Enid made us a cake and a loaf of bread which were both lovely. When we arrived we were greeted by Chris, he explained everything that we would need to know about the property, they were great hosts. They have put together a great little guide on the local area with distances to local attractions, restaurants etc.
All in all couldnt have asked for a better stay, already planning our return visit. -

Left on 03/15/2012 for a stay in March 2012
As soon as we entered the old stable we could tell we were going to enjoy our weekend stay. It was clean and tidy, modern whilst still retaining all of its charm thanks to a thoughtful and careful restoration. We particularly enjoyed the complimentary homemade bread, butter, jam and scones provided for our arrival and the pint of milk was much appreciated too.
The view from the old stable is fantastic and one that could never be tired of.
The grounds are immaculate and it is obvious to see that a lot of time and effort is spent on them.
We took a day trip out to the coast, although it is definitely not necessary to travel as far out as we did as there is plenty to do nearby. We walked to the nearby Shear Water. We really enjoyed our walk spotting deer, geese, horses and squirrels along the way and the lake and woods are a lovely setting.
We had a lovely stay and were made to feel welcome, we would happily return. -

Wilmington, Delaware, USAA Wonderful Week in West Wilts!
Left on 02/07/2012 for a stay in January 2012
The Old Stable is an ideal place for a week (or more) in one of England's loveliest areas. The house has every convenience: clothes washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, broadband access, great wood stove, larger screen TV and DVD player. For visiting americans it is especially attractive as it is midway between the cities of Salisbury (with one of the finest cathedrals in all England) and Bath (with its Roman ruins and Jane austin affiliations. If one is driving, the a36 will take you to Park & Ride facilities for both cities. Or both can be reached by rail from nearby Warminster or Westbury. Also, the Dorset south coast is a pleasant day trip. Stonehenge and avebury are nearby.
While I visited in winter, I was warm and toasty thanks to excellent central heating and duvet covers, I really wanted to sit outside in the garden at the table and chairs with a glass of wine... The view is of endless fields and pastures and a pony or two came by to check me out! This cottage is close to grocery shopping and newspapers in nearby Warminster. There is excellent train service to London and Bristol from Westbury for that day in town. Despite the ease of getting to town, the Old Stable is quiet with no road noise and the there is an great pub nearby, the Bath arms, for lunches and dinner - very reasonable. Your hosts, Chris and Enid, are only "up the path" should you need anything or have any questions. The Old Stable is a wonderful place for a short break or a weeks+ holiday! -

The Old Stable is tucked away behind Crockerton House and feels nice and private with beautiful views. We enjoyed trips into Bath and other local attractions with lots to do in the area. The list of local pubs/restaurants with postcodes and distances was very useful as was the wi-fi for planning trips. The TV with DVD came in handy while enjoying the wood burning stove as the weather was typical of December! Chris and Enid were very welcoming, even making us delicious bread and cake for our arrival. The cottage is beautiful and secluded, located near to the main attractions such as Longleat and Stourhead. Everything was perfect and we would definitely stay again.

The cottage was beautifully decorated and clean, and was very quiet despite being relatively close to a busy road. Very handy for Longleat and Stourhead, with plenty of places to eat locally. Large wood within walking distance if you want to wander without a car. We had a lovely few days and even ate breakfast outside in the private garden. However, we're used to warm carpets at home and the floor here is stone - bring your slippers!

We made a last minute booking at The Old Stable to spend a weekend visiting Longleat and this led to a perfect break. We were made very welcome by Chris , his wife and their pet dogs and cat.Everything was clean and comfortable and it was lovely to relax with a glass of wine at the end of the day and take in the view over the fields.Would we visit again ? You bet.

Fantastic location and property, the Old Stable is tastefully decorated, with a large checklist of amenities such as microwave, over/hob, washing machine and dishwasher, great for self-catering as you will want for nothing. The grounds are secluded with amazing views, horses in the next field make sure you feel away from the city... just what is needed. high standard of service and good value for money. The only area which would have made 5 stars (instead of 4) was the hot water, as it seems to be shared with the main house (which is also a b&b;) it can tend to run out if you decide to enjoy a lazy start to the day and wake up late. Would recommend and definitely would consider returning.

We are sorry he had a problem with the hot water. This is the first time and unfortunately he did not say anything so we could help. The hot water runs independently from the main house which is 50 metres away. We think he may not have realised there is a safety switch which needs to be activated. The hot water tank is quite large and comfortably allows for normal usage. We are glad his general impressions were good and he would recommend and definitely consider returning.

The Old Stable was a total delight! Set in picturesque surroundings, it is a little haven, beautifully designed and decorated and with every care taken to ensure it was welcoming and stylishly comfortable. Much time and thought had obviously been given to a visitors practical needs which were covered in abundance aswell as lovely welcoming touches which were totally endearing and much appreciated. A wonderfully luxurious and charming place to escape to!

Warm and attentive welcome and conducted explanation of high quality amenities. The accompodation was ideal for a secluded "time out" weekend break. The location was convenient for local small towns and good local pub food. Really enjoyed cosy evenbings by the log-burner. Turning the car in the parking area was a challenge!

A very warm and friendly welcome with milk, fresh homemade bread and cakes after a long journey!
The place was lovely. Finished to a very high standard. All essentials present.
A very peaceful location in which to chill out but close enought to a variety of things to do.
I would definitely recommend this place to others. -

We were warmly welcomed and given keys to the most perfect hideaway cottage, with private entrance, parking and garden. The cottage itself was cosy, quaint and immaculate, with every design detail thought of. Enid had made us a loaf of bread and slices of cake which we washed down with our afternoon tea on arrival! Location wise - ideal for venturing out in and around Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire. I hope to visit again and look forward to meeting Christopher and Enid on our next trip!
