Charming Waterfront Cottage 2 hours from Boston

Highly-rated by past guests, our waterfront, fully updated, 4 season cottage sits on a "hidden gem" lake in Southern Maine. Decorated in comfortable and classic Pottery Barn Maine cottage style, it has a romantic antique pineapple four-poster double bed with linens and quilts in the master bedroom, a second bedroom with two captain's twin beds also with quilts, a sleeper couch for two and sleeps 4-6 comfortably.

The sun porch overlooks the lake from all sides and the wrap-around deck is perfect for morning coffee or afternoon drinks with a 180 view of the water through the pines.

Stay includes use of canoe, two kayaks (with child... and adult life preservers), two adult bikes, water noodles, floating chairs, gas grill, fire pit and 100ft waterfront with great swimming, good fishing, a private dock and a shallow wade in beachy area.

Many year round activities from swimming, boating, biking, hiking, snowmobiling, ice skating, cross country skiing and ice fishing are at your doorstep.

Amazingly for Maine - perhaps because we have so many dragonflies and the cottage is up on a hill overlooking the lake, we don't seem to get many mosquitos, nor any black flies nor any poison ivy on the property. We also don't have many or any ticks thanks to a free range neighborhood posse comprised of a testosterone laden rooster and his harem of waddling hens who come over every morning to eat all the ticks.

We know from experience that a wonderful getaways include good food, good drink, comfortable surroundings, good music, and good entertainment for rainy days so we have tried to make sure the cabin has just about everything you would need from the fully equipped kitchen with bread maker, french press, wine glasses/openers and baking spices to the library of cook books, bird books and binoculars.

We don’t have internet. We actually did that on purpose because we wanted Dragonfly Hill Cottage to be a place to unplug and swim, fish, hike, bike, boat, read, cook, play games and reconnect with each other - the way vacations used to be. We do have a DVD, VCR on two TVs and a good selection of movies, games, puzzles, books and speakers for an Ipod for rainy days.

Of course, many of our renters bring their own hot spots or cell phones with internet and there are many places in town that have internet...

Located on a quiet, dead-end rustic dirt road with miles of hiking and biking trails to explore steps away, Dragonfly Hill is a perfect getaway for solo travelers, couples and families - just two hours from Boston. Renters must be over 25.

"We found the cottage to be as peaceful and comfortable as the picture and even more open and the views more captivating. Set back comfortably on a quiet dead end road, access into the house is shaded, flat and easy to unpack (especially all the winter gear we brought). The mud room provided ample space to store gear to keep the cottage uncluttered. Multiple use tables let us prepare food, have puzzles going, and dine comfortably. The beds were comfortable and the entire feel was casual and comfortable with a Pottery Barn and April Cornell feel. The recommendations for Harris Farm xc skiing and Cherry Knoll for local gourmet items were perfect. We felt like treasured old friends. Thank you for sharing!"

The cottage is centrally located evenly between the coast and ocean in the summer and the mountains for skiing in the winter, making it a perfect base for day trips all around.

It is 30 miles from Kennebunkport, 35 miles from Portland, 30 miles from Old Orchard Beach, and 35 miles from Wolfeboro, NH. Very near York, Biddeford and 45 miles from Kittery and Portsmouth, NH.

The area around Lake Sherburne is pastoral with rolling hills and vistas, local farms, bakeries, restaurants, antiques, quaint towns and other lakes. The Nature Conservancy's Waterboro Barrens are nearby with miles of protected trails to explore.

Cherry Knoll Farm is just up the road from the cottage and a favorite with all our renters who have stopped by. Ray and Carol sell fresh organic produce, eggs, cheese and meats, home made breads as well as lobsters and delicious crab cakes right from their farm Maine kitchen.

Oak Street Bistro in Alfred is nice year round restaurant with a stone fireplace, a martini bar and live music on the weekends.

Willowbrook 19th Century Village nearby has lots of events, an old-fashioned penny candy store, a merry-go-round, great restaurant and farmers markets on the weekends though October.

Shaker Pond Ice cream is a local pride and open all year round.

$300 refundable security damage deposit with each stay. $80 cleaning fee. Cancellation policy outlined in agreement. Primary renters must be over 25.

Pets allowed on a per case basis with the following: $100 per pet fee for 4 nights or more rentals $50 per pet fee for 2-3 night rentals and $100 refundable pet damage deposit.

  I arrived with my two boys ages 11, 14 after a quick morning drive from Boston. The cottage is adorable, and walking in to see the view of the lake brought big smiles to the boys. We walked down to the lake and enjoyed the tall trees, green and quiet. The cottage has everything you need. We hung out on the porch, had meals and played games. Went kayacking and canoeing in the lake to explore. went for a swim too. Went to places nearby for local food and produce (yum!) did some antiquing too. Wonderful place to read, catch up with family and friends and play in the lake. All in all its two thumbs up, we will definitely be back!
