Additional Location Information
Denby Dale is known as the 'Pie Village' The famous Denby Dale Pies are a 220 year old village tradition; usually baked to celebrate national special occasions and events. These are not your normal run-of-the-mill pies – these are monster meat, and sometimes potato, pies that have been registered in the Guinness Book of Records in past years!
(Normal size 'Denby Dale Pies' can be bought in the local shops, however)
One of the things that will strike you in Denby Dale is the amount of locally owed specialist shops. These are in abundance in the village and give it its unique character. From the old-fashioned butcher, to the independent book store, gift shops, craft store, furniture shops, shoe shop, clothes shops, there is sure to be something to please everyone. In addition there are several eateries in the village from traditional tea rooms, a very good Indian Restaurant, Thai Restaurant and traditional Pub Grub too. There's also a Pizza and Chinese Takeaway that are within walking distance. A family-friendly Italian Restaurant and a Mediterranean-style Restaurant are also within 5 minutes drive, and you simply HAVE to visit Dearne Lea Tea Rooms, for the BEST home-made ice-cream EVER!
Denby Dale has its own train station on the Penistone Line which links Sheffield to Huddersfield. The impressive viaduct cuts across the valley
This is a great location to be based in. Here's a taster of just some of the attractions close by: Cannon Hall Open Farm and Adventure Playground, The National Coal Mining Museum, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Holmfirth, heart of 'Summer Wine Country', the National Film & Photography Museum in Bradford, Elsecar Heritage Museum, Pugney's Watersports lake and miniature railway, Sandal Castle, Kirklees Light Railway, & Eureka Children's Museum & the Piece Hall in Halifax, Tolson, and Colne Valley Museums in Huddersfield
Other activities nearby include golf, watersports, tennis & swimming.
You are also in great rambling countryside, with a host of public footpaths and bridleways, through woodland and across fields. We leave lots of information in the cottage about the various footpaths in the area.
If you prefer a more lively destination, you are only 15 minutes from the towns of Huddersfield and Wakefield which have great shopping and places of local interest, and for the bigger city lights, you can head towards Leeds and Sheffield, just 30 minutes away. 50 minutes will take you to the not-to-be-missed historic city of York, or why not visit Haworth of the Bronte Sisters' fame?

We stayed at Cuckstool cottage in april 2013 and very much enjoyed our stay. The cottage is very comfortable and has a very homely feel. In our party there were 4 adults, 2 kids and a baby and the cottage was big enough for us all. The kitchen is spacious, modern and well equipped and the large sofas in the living room meant we could stretch out and relax in the evenings.
Denby Dale was a great base for our trips to Holmfirth, Manchester and Leeds.
With the facilities and comfort at Cuckstool we were always happy to get back at the end of the day, put our feet up and relax.
The owner was very quick to respond and understanding when we had to inform them that our little one had damage an ornament. This wasn't a problem.
We would certainly recommend Cuckstool cottage to our friends and family. -

This property sounded great. We first heard about it last year as we make frequent trips to the area to visit family in a nearby village. Denby Dale is convenient for us as we always use public transport and can get there from London in reasonable time by train. We understood that it was being refurbished when we first enquired about it so perhaps our expectations were too high. The kitchen was clearly quite new and reasonably well equipped although the oven was a bit hard to work out as some of the numbers on the controls had worn off ( in fairness there was an explanatory note about this ).A teapot would have been handy and also a large pan...no wonder there were lots of packets of pasta and rice left in the cupboards.
The rest of the house had a tired look about it .It was comfortable enough, but in the way that an old pair of shoes are...you wouldn't want to wear them if you were going out. There seemed to be an awful lot of extension leads in the living room...even one extension connected to another. The bathroom was adequate however there was no bin in there. The only bin was in the kitchen so we ended up putting a plastic bag behind the door. Although this may seem petty it is a basic facility and takes very little effort to find a cheap bin for hygiene and convenience. The towels were also just about adequate.
However the most annoying thing about the property was a hole under the carpet right outside the bathroom door at the top of the stairs. We made note of this in the visitor's comment book and later received something of a reprimand from the owner for not contacting her about it during our stay .We had assumed that the cleaner/agent would have been responsible for reporting this but were later told that a handyman was meant to fix it before our arrival but had apparantly been unable to due to an accident.I'm not sure how we were supposed to know this but the owner clearly thought that it was our responsiblity to contact her (she told us she was abroad at the time). The hole did not greatly affect our stay but not once during subsequent e-mails with the owner have we had any expression of regret at any possible inconvenience.
We've stayed in many places in this area and although this was one of the most conveniently situated it falls well below the general standard of the other places in all other respects.Response from Allan & Philippa Lyall - 04/21/2013

We take feedback from our guests very seriously and I am sorry you felt Cuckstool Cottage fell below par for your stay. This is comfortable, affordable accommodation and we have had very positive feedback from all past guests. I am obviously sorry about the inconvenience you suffered due to the broken board on the landing. This WAS due to be fixed before your arrival and as I told you, the handyman apparently had an accident and didn't turn up. I was unaware of this. We do leave our mobile number clearly displayed for guests. I can report the board is now fixed- took all of 20 minutes! In respect of the other comments, I have now added a teapot, pasta pan, & bathroom bin. We had already engaged an electrician regarding extra sockets to the living room- he came on 15th April so there are now no extension leads. We take our responsibilities as holiday home owners seriously and have always been praised for our customer care. I believe the fact that you thought we'd simply 'left' the broken board/hole on the landing for you to cope with, and that was the 'most annoying thing about the property' has coloured your overall view of the cottage. I certainly did not email you a reprimand. I said I was gutted that you hadn't let me know there was an issue as we would have fixed it immediately, and in spite of the problem I hoped you had had a pleasant stay.

Perfectly placed to explore area big cities and picture perfect scenery. Cant imagine a season this cottage wouldnt be suitable to stay in- cosy in autumn lovely walks and city shopping and we would love to stay in summer sat in garden with amazing views over bowling green and cricket ground literally over the road! Rural but with mod cons. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay- shame it wasnt for longer!

Pleased you enjoyed your stay, and just to update you we have now added a coal effect fire into the living room. It is electric but has a great flame effect which adds a warm ambience to the room. Thank you for your suggestion.

Excellent cottage with all mod cons located within easy commuting distance of a variety of places, whether you like shopping, the outdoors or sightseeing. The cootage has a view of the bowls and cricket green. Its set in a small village which has more than enough amenties, local shops, butchers, bakers and takeaways.
There is a railway station 10 mins walk away which allows cheap and easy access to Leeds city centre, we can definately recommend the Traditional and German markets.
All in all a great stay no matter what you have planned, we will definately return. -

Enjoyed our stay in Cuckstool Cottage and found it in easy reach of many nearby towns including Holmsworth [Last of the summer wine] and Wakefield. Lots of good places to eat and drink and shops and buses close at hand. People very friendly esp. in the Pie Hall. Cottage has lovely outlook opposite the cricket and bowling green. Lovely surrounding countryside .

We got ourselves a great value stay at this Denby Dale. Cottage was clean and well equipped. Only 2 in our party plus our dog so we had loads of room, but would've easily accommodated a large family. Denby Dale village has everything you need and if you like walking you can just park the car up for the week and enjoy the hills and views. Bus service seemed regular too.
We ate out at aagrah an Indian restaurant a short walk away which did a buffett night on a Sunday and Monday which was good value, had great service and friendly staff. Plenty of pubs nearby and takeaways in the village. The National Coal Mining is not too far away and is well worth a visit, entrance is free and a tour down the mine is only £2, great value as it's over an hour below ground.
Cottage has loads of walking books, maps and attraction information so you don't even need to visit a tourist office.
Cottage was warm and welcoming, with heating set to come on twice a day(plenty of hot water too) and quality duvets-which was needed as our week here was very foggy, wet and chilly. Would love to go back in the summer and enjoy the views more. Livestock around area was mainly cows although there were some sheep and alpacas! Plenty of countryside left to let the dog off and not cause havoc!
Road noise did not affect us, only single room on back was near road. Drive is steep and quite concealed so you have to have your wits about you!
Bottle of wine was a very welcomed gift. No problem with security deposit being refunded, very happy with stay. Thank you -

We have just returned from a lovely half term holiday from what I could only call a home from home. Really well kitted out cottage and as for position great for strolls ( or walks if you are the fitter type!!) go position for local attractions within 30 minutes ( but keep away from Magna Science attraction, waste of time and money!!) My boys were so impressed that the cottage had wifi...!!!
Nice looking out over the bowling green we will be returning again. The thing that also made things feel so good was the contact given from the owner who kept us well informed both before hand by email and also by the information pack in the cottage -

This is a lovely three-bed cottage in the picturesque and friendly village of Denby Dale. The living area and kitchen are very spacious and there's a fantastic view over the local cricket pitch and bowls green.
The area is great for walking, cycling etc, there's a convenience store a couple of minutes away and a really good Indian restaurant, The aagrah, a five min walk away. There are other shops in the village, including fish and chips. It's a short drive from Cannon Hall and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, both definitely worth a visit.
