Situated in wild and beautiful countryside on the west coast of Ireland, Kilgallán is a former Church of Ireland chapel, built in 1836. Kilgallán is now converted into a romantic, comfortable and atmospheric holiday home, ready to welcome you for a relaxing and uplifting experience in a very special place.

It stands on a large site, surrounded by rolling Mayo hills, near the Atlantic Ocean. While little is recorded about its history, we do know that in 1901 the belltower was struck by lightning causing significant damage and precluding its use as a place of worship. The church languished, unused, for almost a hundred years. During th...is time what was left of the roof was removed for tax reasons, leaving little more than a shell, soon taken over by animals and vegetation.

Built of limestone, with bags of character, it featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs, and was described by Kevin McCloud as 'the best Church conversion I have ever seen'. Kilgallán is close to Clew Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, with stunning beaches, sailing & sea fishing nearby. The lively heritage town of Westport is only 5k away and Fitzgeralds country pub is just a short walk away.

Suitable for a party of 8-10, Kilgallán has four bedrooms, (three doubles and a kids' room with four bunk beds) a shower room, two en-suites with cast-iron rolltop baths, living room, library, dining hall and kitchen, and an acre (4000 m2) of garden.

With underfloor heating throughout, an open fire in the triple height living room, and a wood burning stove under the altar windows in the dining hall, it's lofty but very cosy. There is a well-equipped kitchen & utility room, a BBQ & a large garden.

Decoration is contemporary within the old limestone walls and there is amazing light through the roof lights and large gothic windows. The property is furnished to a high standard, successfully blending the old and new to create an elegant and comfortable home.

Additional Location Information

The surrounding area of Co Mayo is a haven of breathtaking views of Atlantic coastlines, mountains, lakes, rivers and beaches, all within minutes of the property. Kilgallán is only a short drive to the lively, picture postcard town of Westport. Also nearby is the town of Newport and slightly further away, but well worth a visit are Achill Island, Lough Corrib, and the Burren. The Ceide Fields visitor centre and the National Museum of Ireland: Museum of Country Life are less than one hour's drive away. The local landmark of Croagh Patrick is an exhilarating (walking) climb with stunning views of Clew Bay from the top. The drive around the bay to Louisburg and on to Doolough, past Delphi Lodge, to Killary Harbour, Ireland's only fjord, through Leenane (stop at Hamilton's Pub) and back to Westport is not to be missed.
