Moose Bluff, like a house in a fairy tale, sits perched among the aspens on the edge of a high bluff. Far below, the Snake River curves along the valley floor, and the great Tetons rise in the distance. The home itself is unusual among Jackson Hole luxury vacation rentals – classical and restrained, with a gracious, almost Southern feel. Over 50 acres of private land and the pale spires of an ancient aspen grove surround the house, and a stone path meanders through the trees to the front door.
A wide fireplace warms the formal living room, fine art hangs upon th...e walls. A flat screen TV is nicely hidden away in a built-in cupboard. Doors open to the terrace and the lovely woods. The round dining table stands in an alcove of tall windows at the end of the living room. Eight to ten people can dine comfortably, with a backdrop of forest, river and towering peaks. A small, natural pool and waterfall are just below the windows, and the harmonies of water and birds fill the room in summer and fall.
The sunny, family-sized kitchen is just off the living and dining room. A big center island provides more seating, a place to set out cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and lots of counter space for food prep. Bay windows behind the breakfast table provide thrilling inspiration for the day ahead. Just beside the stove is a door to the stone-floored dining terrace and grill. Steps lead down from the terrace and away into the lawn and forest; a small path wanders off to a guest cabin.
Double doors in the living room lead to the master bedroom wing at the north end of the house. A four-poster bed is covered in snowy white linens; bookshelves are lined with books and a long window seat, an armchair and ottoman make a serene place to read or take a nap. Windows frame the Grand Tetons.
Two connected master bathrooms and a spa make up the bath suite. The “lady’s” bathroom has a deep soaking tub, a large shower, a vanity and a water closet; the “gentleman’s” bathroom has a walk-in shower, a vanity, a water closet, and a door to the spa with a luxurious wood-lined sauna and a large, jetted hot tub. Just off the master bedroom, a quiet, carpeted study with gorgeous built-in cabinetry in the huge walk-in closet and a pull-out sofa can serve equally well as a nursery, an extra bedroom or a private office. A generous antique desk offers plenty of room to work.
The south wing of Moose Bluff holds the guest wing. Here, two bedrooms have access to the three-car garage, the laundry, butler’s pantry and kitchen. The first guest bedroom is light-filled and pretty, with a private bathroom and two twin beds facing an upholstered window seat. The second guest room also has two twin beds and doubles as a children’s playroom, with lots of books and space to play, and French doors that open to the terrace.
Downstairs is the wood-paneled game room. This is a large festive gathering spot where everyone heads in the evenings for games, movies and drinks by the fire. Thick bison-hide rugs and a wood-burning fireplace create a cabin-in-the-woods feeling. There is a big TV built into the wall, a full size pool table, and a banquet table. A sofa in front of the fire can pull out into a bed, if needed. Stairs on one side of the game room lead up to the living room, and on the other, to the guest wing.
Moose Bluff has two free-standing guest residences on the property, each is a short distance from the main house. The first – and smaller - is a true log cabin with a rocking chair porch, perched on the very rim of the bluff, with a dramatic view over the mighty Snake River to the Tetons. Inside is an airy living/sleeping space, and a compact, well-designed kitchen. Thick logs span the ceiling inside, and a wood stove crackles merrily. From the king size bed in the corner, both the mountains and the TV can be seen.
The second, a cottage, stands to the north of the main house, completely embraced by aspens and firs, with a breath-catching panorama spread out before it. In the living and dining area, an adobe fireplace faces the couch, which can pull out to a full-size bed, if required. The cottage has a small but fully-equipped kitchen, and a roomy wood deck with an outdoor dining area. Two separate bedrooms – one with a queen bed, one with two matching twins – each with a closet and small bathroom. The cabin, cottage and main house link together on wooden pathways.
Explore the little trails crisscrossing the property, and you’ll come upon a magical spot: a twenty-foot high tipi hidden in the aspens near a small campfire clearing. Say the word, and we will outfit the tipi with feather beds, lanterns and everything you need to roast s’mores or hot dogs. A few steps from the tipi, there is a picnic table and a stone-ringed campfire, where great logs serve as benches. This is perhaps the best picnic spot in all of Wyoming. From here, you can see everything; the world is yours.Read more
