golden, coBeautiful but hurting for tourists
Left on 08/04/2011 for a stay in July 2011
Let me begin by saying that I have been to the Bahamas several times. Been to the tourists traps and I've been fortunate to have been to most Out Islands. The Out Islands are the only way to go if you want to enjoy endless beaches and no crowds. As of august 1st 2011, there is little or no tourism on Eleuthera. It's difficult to find any restaurant that is open or has fresh fish. You can get conch anywhere as it is an island staple. The Queens Highway which runs the length of the island is deteriorating and most roads off the highway are limestone or sand. Unemployment is the norm and yet the locals are extremely friendly. In fact, the locals have always been helpful and friendly through good times and bad.
As for the house, it sits on a quiet bay on the atlantic side. Constant on shore breezes where wonderful and bugs became only a problem at dawn and dusk. View from the house were fantastic. There were tiny bugs all over the kitchen and the kitchen is dated but serves it's purpose. The bed room are comfortable. One thing not mentioned is the fact the the third bedroom is connected the the house, but you must leave the main house and enter the third bedroom through external doors. Columbus Carey is the care taker and a great guy. He and his wife own Berts for the Best and basically run Tarpum Bay. Lilly the housekeeper did a great job keeping the house clean. She is a sweetheart and we will miss our conversations with her. The house is aging and the beach around the bay is covered with flotsam and jetsam as a huge Italian resort went out of business years ago. A long haired Italian fellow is the "caretaker" of the closed resort which is completed dilapidated and should be bulldozed. Overall, the family had a great time exploring the island and it's many wonders. Those renting a car from columbus must be made aware that you can't rent a car to a couple of days. You must rent a car for your entire stay. At 80$ a day for 10 days that adds up. As taxi, Columbus will pick you up for a fee. We could only fly into North Eleuthera airport from Denver and that cost us $120 one way. Food on the island is super expensive. A gallon of milk is $9,50 and gas was $5.00 a gallon.
The island is beautiful. The people are wonderful. Take lots of cash and buy plenty of water s there is no source of drinking water other than bottled.
If you are looking for night life and great restaurants this is not for you. If you are looking for exploration, great diving, fishing and relaxation, this is the place for you. -

Polson, MTSpectacular!

The location and accomodations exceeded our expectations. The House and Beach are absolutely lovely. This is an increditble get away and Columbus and Lily treat you like kings and queens, they couldn't do enough for us. Our one recommendation would be to bring less clothing since there is a washer and dryer. We would pack food. Food is expensive so the next time we'll bring tuna, nuts, spices etc. and we are planning a next time.

Beautiful setting on a white sand beach. Great snorkeling, fishing, walks on the beach, exploring. Very private and secluded. We saw no one on the beach all week. Nice furnishings with great fully equiped kitchen. Large tub in master bath. Short drive to town and restaurants. Best family vacation we have ever had

Santa Rosa, CABeautiful relaxing vacation
Left on 07/22/2010 for a stay in May 2008
We were 3 couples who stayed for a week and enjoyed the serenity and quiet surroundings. The house is lovely and situated in an almost private cove with maybe a dozen other homes on this white sandy beach. We chose to read, relax and drink and eat to our hearts content. Every other day we went sightseeing and it was fun exploying the island. There are restaurants nearby, however, I enjoy cooking so we usually ate in. There's a good market and liquor store near the airport and when the guys went fishing, we ended up with fresh fish for 2 days, even gave some away. We enjoyed our stay immensely and would love to return.

This winding bay on Eleuthera Island is actually better than this pictures. Its just difficult to capture the scene on a camera. I didn't realize how relaxed I would become on this trip. Its defintely remote but we could explore every part of the island by car when we wanted to. There is nothing commercial or contrive at winding bay. Its the real paradise. The water was so brilliant and inviting and having daily cooking and cleaning made us feel like royalty. I am very lucky that a freind turned us on to High Tide!

I have stayed at High Tide several times over the past 10 years and each visit only seems to get better! High Tide has been remodeled and is not only beautiful but has everything to make you feel at home - satellite tv, internet, beautiful views, privacy, books, games, a wonderful housekeeper and a fabulous property manager that do all that they can to make sure your vacation is as relaxing or exciting as you would like it to be. High Tide is sheltered by Winding Bay so the waters are calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling. This is the perfect vacation home for a genuine vacation in paradise!

Had a wonderful time. Great accomodations, perfect location and excellent water. I can't say enough about going there. What a beautiful part of the world, great side trips on the Island, good restaurants and nice place to stay. You can do anything or nothing at all. I spent most of the time in the water, fishing and diving. Just hated to come home! You will relax!
