Description from the manager
B&B; Suite nel Castello is a breakfast suite of superior quality located in a medieval caste. A precious jewel set in a legendary landscape - might yet be the most appropriate definition of this estate, a wine estate which lies just south of Padua and on the borders of a National Park, within easy reach of such cultural meccas as Venice, Vicenza, Verona, Ferrara, Mantua and Rovigo. Padua is 15 km away, Venice as much again. The closest village - Selvazzano - is at a distance of 3 km. The next railway station is in Montegrotto Terme (15 km), and from there you can each quickly and easily Padua. Your busy schedule hunting down the works of famo...us artists and architects needs to be punctuated by memorable meals at local trattorias, for the best of Italian cooking.
Adjacent to the estate lies a golf club which has a pool and a restaurant which was given a Michelin star in November 2008. The large 25 x 10 m pool (2-3 minutes from the cottages) is open to guests 6 days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday.
The wine from the estate has increasingly been winning accolades from leading wine critics all over the world, an added attraction for our guests who can freely taste and discuss the production in the estate's wine shop. The estate is a medieval hamlet which grows lively at the time of harvest. Guests of the estate are granted a 20% on the high quality wines produced on the estate.
In the thousand years and more of its existence the castle has again and again been enlarged, renewed and renovated. It has retained the appearance of a stronghold, but this by no means excludes ornamentation such as the curved double stairway and the laurel hedges and borders of hydrangeas. Crossing the gravel courtyard and climbing up the little hill, one arrives at the Castello dominated by its massive keep. Flanked by pine trees, its ancient walls are covered with Virginia creeper and wisteria. One wing of the castle has been tastefully adapted into a spacious 70 m2 bed & breakfast suite. The suite is located on the 1st upper floor and is composed of a large living room with open fireplace where breakfast is served, a spacious bedroom with king size bed, a dressing room and a bathroom with bathtub. The furnishings are as historical as possible and as modern as necessary (bathrooms, upholstery).
Excursions in the neighbourhood
The Veneto villas: Venetia is steeped in history and culture, towns like Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Mantua, Ferrara and, of course, Venice are within easy distance. The numerous Veneto villas, the Villeggiatura, are a real must. Now a brief history of how this came about. When Venetian maritime trade declined in the course of the 16th century, Patrician families felt compelled to rethink their old principle of "coltivar il mare, lasciar stare la terra" (cultivating the sea, letting the land be) and remembered the hitherto neglected hinterland, the Terraferma. By reclaiming the alluvial land and starting agricultural production, they had a second string to their bow, as it were. But they would not have been the Venetians, had they not as a matter of course transferred their customary civilized lifestyle to the country. This in turn meant that they had magnificent villas built in the style of their urban palaces, but situated in the midst of their agricultural estates. The most famous of these - La Badoera, La Malcontenta, La Rotonda and the Villa Cornaro Rush, for instance - were designed by Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) who combined the classical proportions of antiquity with the ground plans of the traditional Venetian palaces. Seventeen are the work of Palladio, but on the Brenta Canal north of Padua alone there are 125 villas, many of which evoke his vocabulary. The most outstanding among them are the Contarini Simes and Pisani Villas - both more princely residences than villas in the strict sense - and La Malcontenta. The villas are all easily accessible from the here offered estate. Many of them are open, at least in part.
The Spa Abano Terme: Abano Terme was known for its curative waters in Roman days, its mineral-rich water comes subterraneously from the Alps and shoots to the surface at a temperature of 70-80 degrees. One of the best spa hotels in Abano Terme, the Hotel Ritz Terme, specialises in therapeutic (fango, galvanotherapy, lymphatic draining, massages, hot baths and more) as well as wellness and beauty treatments (sauna, steambath, solarium, facials and more). For more information and prices their website is www.ritz.it.
The golf course: Immediately adjoining the estate, designed by Tom Macaulay, chairman of the British Association of Golf Course Architects, the site comprises an 18-hole course (par 72 / SSS 73, length 6.318 m) and a 9-hole course (par 36 / SSS 36, length 3,012 m) and covers over 200 acres. Attached to the course are the clubhouse - a converted tobacco warehouse - the excellent Restaurant Relais Golf, a bar, a pro-shop and the swimming pool. For our guests there are 30% reductions on the green fee.Read more
