ColomboGreat first day in australia close to nature
Left on 04/25/2013 for a stay in January 2013
I and my husband visited australia at the end of January and decided to unwind for the first day in the Yarra valley and found the Wombat's Burrow on the internet and contacted them. Sue replied straight away and in a few minutes the booking was made. We arrived there after flying into Tullamarine airport and it was an easy journey. When arrived we were overwhelmed with the nature of the place, all the animals and the plants where fantastic. Our room, consisting of a large living room a kitchenette and a very well appointed bedroom was perfect. The large outdoor area allowed to observed the bird live including some beautiful cockatoos and parrots.
On top of that Sue could recommend to us a few activities to do during our stay in Victoria, such as the penguin parade and a wildlife tour (very private) to see Kangaroos and Koalas in the wild.
Overall we had a fantastic stay and would probably have benefited of a second night.
I would recommend it to anyone that would like to observe nature in peace in the heart of the wine country.

Ania and Michele, thank you for taking the time in your very busy life to provide your review of The Burrow, and your stay here. We loved having you, it was very special for us too .. and a pleasure to show you some of the aspects of the Yarra Valley that make it our much loved home. We also are delighted that you enjoyed so much your visit to see the Penguins (aren't they amazing?) and also connect with Echidna Walkabout Tours for a taste of other wild life close to Melbourne. It was a pleasure to have you stay and we wish you much happiness in your new place of living. You are indeed world travellers! cheers, Sue & Bill

Left on 04/01/2013 for a stay in March 2013
We attended a wedding in the Yarra Valley, and we were looking for something more than just a hotel room. We found a real little treasure B&B; at the Burrow Wombat Bend. Separate to the main residence, it has a good size living room with a well stocked kitchen. Good size bedroom and ensuite. The cabin has a wonderful porch overlooking the billabong, great for observing the many birds that have made it their home. In the kitchen, the refrigerator had every ingredient for a gourmet breakfast, including farm fresh eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, juice, etc. Crusty bread together with local jams and marmalades rounds off a great meal. The hosts Sue and Bill, made us very welcome on arrival, but then left us to enjoy the privacy of our own cabin. There were lot's of little extras including a bottle of port and some chocolates for when we got back there that night.
Sue and Bill have a fantastic feel for the environment and really care about their little slice of heaven. If you are looking for a special place to stay in the Yarra Valley, look no further!Response from Sue Forrester - 04/04/2013

Jennifer and David, it was such a pleasure meeting you and having you to stay in The Burrow. We always enjoy 'new friends', as that is how you felt to us ... friends we just hadn't got around to meeting until this weekend. We hope that there will be a future occasion when you need some R&R and we can look after you again. Cheers! Sue & Bill and all the wildlife of Wombat Bend.

Left on 03/31/2013 for a stay in March 2013
Hands down the best b&b; we found during our cycling honeymoon in the Yarra Valley. The spacious 1 bedroom self-contained cottage is tucked away in an exquisite pocket of bushland. As there is the one cottage you have the grounds to yourself- including the charming billabong full of ducks & water fowls. We awoke to the sounds of birds & nature. The kitchen was stocked with locally-sourced produce for breaky & herbs from the garden- a welcome sight after our tiring ride from Lilydale! Everything we needed was there- it was very hard to leave after one night, but we'll definitely be back. Sue & Bill were great hosts too- they made us feel so welcome & were really informative. Thanks again! Kim & Zeke

Sue and Bill welcomed us for the fourth time to the beautiful space that is The Burrow. The pantry and fridge is full of delightful extras and the cottage is easy to relax in and enjoy the self-catering. The absolute peace of twilight when the moorhens and cockatoos come to the billabong is soul-food indeed. Sitting on the verandah and watching the glistening water is just the best. A comfy bed and all the comforts at home make this bnb one of the best. We love it and so will you!

An outstanding natural rural experience yet so close to the CBD. Sue and Bill made us so welcome. It really was a home away from home. All the little extras were thoughtfully provided and the cottage was so comfortable. One day was 40 degrees and the next only 15! Yet the abode was comfortable whatever the elements. Abundant flora and fauna right up to the verandah. The birdlife on the billabong was breath taking. It really was the perfect foil to busy suburban life. We left happy that we had met people such as Bill and Sue and with the knowledge that their comfortable rural respite will be available to us again

Dear Donna and David,
It was such a pleasure to have you stay in The Burrow, and we are delighted that you enjoyed your couple of days so much. We really do look forward to welcoming you again when you feel the need for some instant R&R..... one of the nicest 'rewards' for us is when guests arrive tired and stressed, but depart with their shoulders relaxed and a spring in their step. Providing some respite from the outside world is what we love to do. Cheers, Sue & Bill and the Airedales & wombats & birds. -

What a relaxing place to stay. Bird life was amazing and Bill and Sue have done a great job in creating a wildlife sanctuary. The location was great for exploring the local area and our hosts were able to point us in the right directions with things to do each day.Our house was real homely (with an incredible book case) and the frig was full of breakfast food. Sue pampered us !, but at the same time gave us privacy

hello Jim and Barb, thanks for your lovely comments. You would be as excited as we are tonight... the Phascogale family has arrived, Mum has brought out her three babies. Reading one of the reference books again, there's a comment that they like to feed on mice ~ fabulous! we've had no mice in the pantry the past few months. Now we know why. The wildlife at Wombat Bend is getting wilder !

It is a privilege to be given an opportunity to comment on our recent stay at The Burrow, a B&B; at Dixon's Creek. The level of comfort in the cottage and the serenity of the surrounding bushland and lake stand out in our memories. We both commented on the restful and relaxing "night song". Not since our respective childhoods have we been lulled to sleep by the soft croaking of frogs.
Especially, we thank Sue and Bill for being such excellent hosts. They have a talent for anticipating any replenishment of the generously stocked stores of food and drink in the cottage. We intend to recommend The Burrow to our friends and we will certainly be making a return visit on our next trip south.
To close, it needs to be said that Dixon's Creek is quite central to the Yarra Valley wine district and all the other good things that north-east Victoria has to offer.
Brett & Jacquie Connolly.

My fiancee and I had a wonderful 3 night stay at The Burrow at Wombat Bend last weekend. We were greeted by Sue and Bill who gave us a tour around the accommodation. The property is amazing - lots of wildlife! Our stay was like staying at a home away from home - Bill and Sue made our stay very relaxing and were very hospitable. The weather wasn't the best which made it an even more relaxing weekend as we were able to stay warm inside and read books. We will miss the friendly airedales!!
Our stay is just what the doctor ordered - great to be able to put the feet up.
The location of the Burrow at Wombat Bend meant we could stay an extra night and drive back into Melbourne in time for work on the Monday!
Thank you Sue and Bill (and the airedales) - we look forward to our next visit in the future -

Sue and Bill are wonderful hosts, providing the right blend of friendly hospitality and a secluded couple's retreat. We have stayed there twice and hope to return.

Left on 06/18/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We arrived to a warm, quiet cottage overlooking a billabong where the only noise was that of the ducks and rosellas. For us, the natural bushland setting is the best way to relax, and with close access to some marvellous walks, it was a great way to reconnect with where we live, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The cottage was thoughtfully set up, with everything you could want to be self sufficient, and a few extras to make it a special stay. The bed was perfect, and I am happy to say I had the best nights sleep I have had in years. The room was as quiet and comfortable as a cocoon, and the bed was divine. Our hosts were happy to spend time talking about their place, and offer suggestions of where to eat and what to do in the area. We left feeling like a weekend away at The Burrow was exactly what we were looking for. The only possible improvement would be the addition of a fireplace.

If you like five star megawatt luxury, all mod-cons, king-size bed and Vogue-Living minimalist chic, then this place is not for you. If you like relaxed, comfy, welcoming, early settler style, down-to-earth real-home comforts with breathtaking views and tranquility like you've never experienced, then make your booking now! The opportunity to get 'up close and personal' with the bird life was just magical, and a highlight of our stay. The queen-size bed was super comfortable and the electric blankets were put to good use. It felt like we were staying at a distant relative's place, not at a commercial property, which we loved. It was so relaxed and unpretentious, we both settled in immediately. The nights were very cold when we stayed there, and better insulation and heating would have been appreciated, but once we were in bed we were both sound asleep. The bathroom was a bit tired; it could do with modernising, and freezing, but the water was hot and plentiful, and the organic liquid soap Sue supplied was divine. Sue and Bill were lovely, really welcoming and ready for a chat, which made our experience more like a family visit than two days in the country. It was just what we needed. We are hoping to go back in the spring for another dose of birds and complete relaxation.

Clean and comfortable bed, quality linen. We had lunch in one of the many excellent Yarra Valley's restaurants and there were enough local breads, cheeses, fruit and dairy breakfast provisions to provide supper as well as breakfast. Loved watching the many species of birds on the lake. Not more than half an hour away from most of the Yarra Valley wineries and attractions such as Tarrawarra Museum.

From the first phone call from Sue to confirm our booking through to the time we had to leave, our two night stay at The Burrows was perfect. Sue and Bill have set up a warm and friendly getaway for people who love the bush environment and tranquillity of nature. The mud brick cottage is really comfortable, with loads of books, magazines, music, comfy bed and great views of the billabong and bush. Sue and Bill provided an amazing brekky - so much fresh and healthy food that we hardly needed anything else to eat for the day! You can't beat sitting on the verandah in the sun eating gorgeous yoghurt, muesli, free range eggs with bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes, followed by fresh coffee :) Also loved feeding the birds, talking to the airedales (sooo friendly) and engaging in long chats with Sue about her background and current interests. Thank you both for sharing your beautiful place with us.

'The Burrow at Wombat Bend' combines country-style cottage comfort with the rejuvenating elements of superb natural surroundings and peacefulness. It was such bliss to be able to wake late, alarm-free, to the gentle sounds of the bush and birds in the wetlands just beyond the back verandah. The provisions, mostly sourced locally, were delicious, fresh and abundant - much more than just a hearty breakfast. Talking to Sue and Bill was an education - about airedale Terriers, the development of their wetland haven, the variety of birds it has attracted, even inviting us to view nocturnal creatures such as a sugar glider and a phascogale (a carnivorous australian marsupial unknown to us before). Such a picturesque setting to wander around and photograph - who could ask for more in a retreat just an hour from home? We will definitely be back!

A delightful and generous-sized retreat near the owner's house and overlooking (the now full) billabong teeming with birdlife. The house is homely and filled with momentos and dozens of books, many about wildllife. The large wrap around verandahs are ideal for sitting outside and watching the local wildlife. The breakfast provisions are very generous and the location superb with both Yarra Glen and Healesville only a short drive away. The owners are helpful, very committed to the preservation of wildlife and concerned that your stay be an enjoyable one. We arrived tired and stressed but thanks to The Burrow left relaxed and rejuvenated.

As a couple who enjoy peace and tranquility away from traffic noise when travelling, we found the "Burrow to be idyllic. This bushland retreat is on the edge of a tree lined billabong which is home to a wonderful array of birdlife. It was not difficult to let the hours drift by on balmy afternoons on the verandah looking out upon the billabong observing wildlife interact whilst enjoying a glass or two.
The open plan mudbrick and timber B&B; has a wonderful quirky nature which in itself, is a little adventure. Our hosts are very much dedicated to wildlife preservation and eco sustainability. This is reflected in their love and care of the local habitat at Wombat Bend and in the many books on the subject found within. Indeed a feature of the accommodation is the abundance of books and music for guests to enjoy.
The kitchen has all the necessaries for a self catering B&B.; The pantry is well stocked with basics so any shopping would be supplementary. Top marks for the "arrival package". Not enough space here to elaborate but of note was best home made raspberry jam ever. It made a great start to our week at "The Burrow".
The furnishings have a contemporary feel and whilst ideal for the better half, I found the lounge seating too low to the floor for my large stature. Again, for myself, the dated television set(as a dedicated after dark TV junkie) had no headphone socket for after hours use so as not to disturb those who had gone to bed. I make the point only because we had five nights rather than just overnight. The bed itself was clean and comfortable.
Sue and Bill were lovely hosts extending a warm welcome. When asked, they obliged with the history of the location. Both were attentive to our needs without being intrusive. Our stay lived up to expectations. To quote Micahel Caton from the movie 'The Castle'..."Ahhh,the serenity", and indeed, it was just that.

This was the best B & B that we have ever stayed at. It was wonderful of Sue & Bill to share their piece of paradise with us. The rustic cottage was filled with little treasures, books and magazines which gave it a real homely feel. From the time we entered the front gate the stress in our lives just melted away. We live in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges and Bill asked us why would we come just around the corner to a B & B. Our answer was very simple, we needed a break from the everyday hustle and bustle. This ticked all the boxes for us and we will be back.

Left on 01/07/2012 for a stay in December 2011
Nestled in amongst vineyards and beside its own lake complete with assorted water fowl, the Burrow is within easy reach of tourist towns in the Yarra Valley, allowing for memorable day tripping with time leftover to just "sit" and absorb the tranquil surroundings, or perhaps one of the books from the extensive living room library.
The interior of the cottage was clean and comfortable, with the rustic charm of an old country farmhouse. The kitchen came complete with fresh local produce, complemented by Sue's own home-baked fresh crusty bread delivered warm to us straight from her oven.
It was good to sit lakeside and quietly watch the sun go down at the end of the day; but I also loved the side view from the kitchen window. And in the morning I had to laugh when, as I stretched across still half-asleep to open the bedroom curtain, I was greeted by two cockatoos partaking of their breakfast from the feeder outside our window.
Sue and Bill's hospitality couldn't be faulted and our only disappointment was that we didn't stay a fourth night.
