It's a great location for "just popping out to the sights or the shops", the vast majority of which are within five to fifteen minutes walk, but easily returning for a restorative cup of tea...
We love staying here.

UKFantastic location, plenty of space but a mixed bag
Left on 11/13/2012 for a stay in November 2012
Firstly I must say that the location of the property for visiting York is exceptional, the views of the minster are fantastic and there is plenty of space for the 5 people it can accomodate. Also the kitchen is well equiped. But from there on - its your choice. The photos on the webb site are out of date - first impressions of the hall way with a carpet that is worn through to the stairs underneath was not good. Their claim that it had been furnished sympathetically for the period of the house - yes in the kitchen - in the rest of the house one has to use ones imagination . In the sitting room/lounge - the gas fire (one of the features we liked and were looking forward to) is labelled with a warning - not to be used because it is dangerous (it looks like it has been like this for some time). The cushion on the rocking chair is stained and there were cobwebs in the fireplace. In the kitchen the table cloth had tea stains on it and all the chair/bench seats were badly stained and very worn - very off putting. Upstairs the main bedroom - is spacious but the bed linen was stained and the mattress very uncomfortable and sagged in the middle. In fact all linen provided was very poor - had we known we would have brought our own with us. The noise from the road below was so bad it prevented you from sleeping especially when the ambulances/police cars come through at all hours of the night. If you are a light sleeper do not chose this room. The bath room door does not shut or lock (we had to whistle) and the lighting is very poor. I object to being asked to take the rubbish out and put it in a public bin, and also to strip the beds on leaving. We have rented properties all over the world and this has to be the poorest condition we have ever experienced. I think the owners did up the property in 2008 and haven't touched it since - it was disappointing to read the visitors book - many who have mentioned the outages listed above - but they have not been corrected. Such a shame with a little care and attention - it could have been delightful.

186338Lovely period property in central location
Left on 03/10/2012 for a stay in February 2012
Minster View is a lovely property full of character, which is within walking distance of everything of interest in York. We had a fantastic stay there and felt like we had lots of space - even though it's above a shop it's basically a three-bedroomed house with a great-sized lounge.
It was all clean and well-cared for. The couple who manage the property were helpful. There's a nice new big TV and a squashy sofa. Our son loved the attic room tucked away at the top of its own staircase.
Gillygate is a fairly busy road in York terms, but still a narrow street. We had no problem sleeping there and I am a light sleeper - the new double-glazed window clearly cuts out a lot of noise and the kebab shop mentioned by a previous reviewer seems to be a pizza place now. I would not have thought to mention noise if it had not been brought up by the reviewer who stayed there two years ago.
So, all in all, a lovely stay. -

BucksMinster View - city centre gem
Left on 02/22/2012 for a stay in May 2011
We were sceptical about the minster view before we arrived, but lo and behold, the city walls are at the end of the garden and the Minster is just behind! The house is so convenient for the city centre and it was a joy not to have to use the car for days. Our youngest was almost 5 when we stayed here, so we were beyond the days of pushchairs and the steep stairs to the attic rooms were not a problem - smaller children (or much older adults!) might find it a problem.
We loved people watching from the first floor living room, waving to people walking on the walls as we ate in the kitchen and just generally being so close to the city centre.
York is great and we loved it so much we're off again in a few weeks. -

ScotlandGreat position but sleepless nights

This accommodation is in a great location for a visit to central York. You are within walking distance of all the major attractions and it has the added bonus of a secure car park so you do not need to worry about getting a space if you venture further afield.
The property has a nice kitchen/diner and spacious lounge with picture window looking out across Gillygate. To the rear of the property you can see the city walls and the Minster beyond (when we visited the property went by the name of Minster View, same owners).
On first arrival we thought the place was ideal for us, it wasn’t until we went to bed that evening that we changed our mind. We hadn’t realised that Gillygate was a main route for ambulances from the nearby station, and that a Kebab shop over the road was open to the early hours of the morning with a lively and loud clientele. This really shouldn’t have been a problem had there been some decent double glazed windows fitted to deaden the sound. However, the old traditional single pane windows in the front bedroom did very little to help the noise.
To summarise, a great location, with decent accommodation, but if you want to feel rested after your holiday, only go if you can sleep through anything (or at least check and see if the main bedroom glazing has been improved).Response from Anna Ward - 02/23/2012

This review was for a holiday taken in 2010. We felt that it was important to react to this and a small number of similar concerns by installing double-glazing in the main bedroom, which we did in January 2011. Several returning guests have since said that this has made a great difference.
