“Amazing experience!” We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Actually sleeping in a tree, wow! But with all the comforts. It made for a special expereince that my husband and daughter enjoyed as much as I. Waking up in the morning the the sound of howler monkeys and a sloth actually came and visited us, as he or she was passing through the trees. Its very close to the beach, a 2 minute walk at tops. There were 2 great restaurants around the corner, on the beach. Good local food like coconut chicken. With bicicyles we road into the village of Cahuita to visit the National Park and do a little shopping. There are 2 mini supermarkets with everything you need, a bank and a drugstore, plus lots of little artisnal shops. We had a great time and can recommend this place absolutely, a must, if you are looking for a tree house experience!

About Province of Limon

Warm, clear waters and pristine white sands lined with coconut trees… no wonder Limon is regularly referred to as 'the ultimate tropical paradise.'

A Caribbean island with lush green mangrove wetlands overshadowed by the impressive Cordillera de Talamanca mountain range, Limon pretty much comes with everything in terms of scenic beauty.

Find your perfect vacation rental in the heart of it all with FlipKey. It's the best way to experience Limon.

About the Province of Limon

A stopping-off point for the explorer Christopher Columbus back in 1502—with many modern cruise ships still dropping off passengers here toda—Limon nestles between Nicaragua and Panama in the Caribbean Lowlands. It's beautiful, quiet beaches stretch for around 125 miles, while its noisy and bustling capital takes its name from the island itself, Puerto Limon.

Less of a tourist trap than other Caribbean spots, it's less developed than other islands. Nevertheless, this Afro-Caribbean island does have a culture it likes to show off to visitors via museums, national attractions and unusual architecture.

The island takes care to protect endangered species and has both a Turtle and a Sloth Sanctuary. The latter involves a canoe trip to watch the sloths in their natural habitat, while the turtles can be spotted nesting on the beach at Tortuguero National Park in the north of the island.

What to do in Limon, Costa Rica

You might be lucky enough to see a sloth hanging from a palm tree in Parque Vargas in Puerto Limon. Certainly you will spot a statue of the town's 'founding father' Christopher Columbus.

If you fancy a boogie while in Puerto Limon, then head for the nightclub at Ninja's Bar or the top floor of the Hotel Acon for some reggae and salsa action. Beforehand, try out some local Caribbean dishes such as a meat, rice, beans and plantain offering called Casados, or Sopa de Mondongo (tripe soup and vegetables).

The most popular beaches on the island—and where you'll find restaurants and bars shading under palm trees—are at Manzanillo, Puerto Viejo and Playa Bonita.

Go for a swing down the Rainforest Ariel Tramway at the Port in Puerto Limon. You'll get a fantastic bird's eye view of the Braulio Carrillo National Park and its wildlife.

Top travel tips for Limon, Costa Rica

Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose is the nearest airport to Puerto Limon. Take a half-hour taxi ride to the Caribe Bus terminal in San Jose for around $19, or catch a red and white bus to San Jose domestic bus terminal at the airport for just $1 (it's then a five-minute taxi ride to the Caribe terminal for $2).

Visit during the second week in October and you'll hit the annual festival 'Carnaval'. This means plenty of food, dancing and music—10 days’ worth, in fact!

Also, it's a good idea to carry a rain lightweight poncho—even in the dry season.

Limon is a beautiful island that offers the quiet wonder of nature in its tropical forests and white sandy beaches, yet also boasts the color and vibrancy of a bustling town in its capital city. Be sure to visit before the secret gets out and developers arrive!

Angler's Lair--A little slice of heaven
I can't stop thinking about this place

My girlfriend and I picked Angler's Lair based on the recommendation of a friend that stayed there a couple years ago. It is the most peaceful and serene house one could ever hope to luck up on the jungle. Clean, quiet (but for the "music" from the amazing wildlife) and relaxing. Janet and Nick are so down to earth and genuinely kind people and they did a great job of balancing how often they came around to check to see if we needed anything and giving us privacy. Nick even gave us an "orientation bike ride" around the area to make sure we'd know where to find the best beach spots and the closest places to grab food. Oh! They also have the sweetest dog that drops in every so often to hear about your adventures! This is absolutely a great place to stay and it gives you the full experience of the jungle and the beach.see more

La Casita Idyllic Garden Getaway
Peace, sloths, and floating in the sea

Just back from La Casita in Cocles, south of Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. I highly recommend this sweet, thatched jungle cottage near the sea. The house is open-air for the living area and kitchen, with blue morpho butterflies fluttering through. The setting is gorgeous jungle by the river with torch ginger, carambola and other fruit trees, and a ylang ylang tree for night fragrance. There are two additional houses for rent on this property, Casita Grande and Casita Nuevo; all have an artsy feel. I enjoyed waking each morning to the roar of the howler monkeys nearby, walking the path to the beach, picking up shells at the tideline, and taking a refreshing swim. The hammock on the porch beckons for reading next. Within walking distance are a gourmet grocery store, internet café, wood-fired pizza place, bread bakery, and a number of "sodas" or small restaurants offering fresh ceviche and Costa Rican specialties. The bustling town of Puerto Viejo is a bike ride away, with live music at night, craft stalls, a bank with aTM, fish market, bars and restaurants. I recommend the chocolate brownies at Bread & Chocolate, the gazpacho at EZ Times, the local crafts at Lulu Berlu, and organic chocolate at the Saturday morning farmer's market. At Pure Jungle Spa, get a chocolate body wrap, then a massage with cocoa butter. You can kayak up river; see turtles nesting on a night tour to Gandoca; bike to Manzanillo for kayaking and fish lunch at Maxis; take the bus to the Sloth Sanctuary with a stop to hike at Cahuita National Park. My best memory is floating in a calm, crystal clear sea, gazing at the most stunning coastline you'll ever see, not a building in sight, only coconut palms and jungle coming right to the sand's edge. Two weeks at La Casita slips away too fast. p.s. Did I mention we had a sloth in a tree in the garden one day?see more

A Jungle-Beach Tree-House In Cahuita
Paradise Found!

My Husband and I enjoyed a wonderful 3 week vacation to Costa Rica. This was our second visit to the Beautiful country, however our first time traveling to the carribean vicinity. Topo's Treehouse was a major highlight of our trip. We stayed Sept.28th-Oct.3rd. The Treehouse has a very unique, welcoming ambiance, set in a peaceful enviroment. within just a quick walk to the beach,Bridgettes Cafe,The Reggage Bar,and a small convenient store. A little further is the cute town area of Cahuita. But we mostly just enjoyed relaxing around the Treehouse. We saw more up close wildlife, than any other location that we have ever stayed. On arrival we were welcomed by Howler Monkeys, and a Three toed Mama Sloth, just outside the Tree window/opening,within 3-4 feet distance! My husband had the luck of capturing photos of the baby, when it was out from being tucked under Mama. Later in the week saw a Two Toed Sloth climbing by the window.Truly an amazing experience! Also there is a beautiful fish/frog pond...saw green dart frogs,Red Treefrogs and more! Many great photo opportunities. Topo's Hospitality was Wonderful! He is very friendly and helpful. The first day we were tired from traveling. He helped us to order a very good pizza to be delivered(which we had more than once during our stay). Also reccommended the Restaurant Sobre Las Olas. Dined there our final night, the food was Delicious, and the location by the beach is Beautiful! We feel very fortunate to have found this Tree house paradise...and know where we will stay when we return. ... ~ Pura Vida ~ Kerin & John Haueisen Navarre Fl.see more
